I've heard enough reviewers I trust say it actually plays far better than its predecessor, that the controls take some getting used to but it makes matches feel way more natural and fluid.

Still sounds like the game lacks depth though, Universe Mode untouched etc. So I suspect we might hear about people being bored within a month.

General consensus so far is that this is a definite improvement over 2k20. Still a lot of things they can improve on, but a step in the right direction.

I get why they do it (because people will buy those packs) but damn I miss the days of unlocking rasslers in-game.

I think there should be a sweet spot in the middle. Sure DLC is fine but throw me some secret unlockable characters in there too man because I miss that as well.

Supposedly there are characters in Career mode that aren’t in the actual game but they’re different versions of people already in the game. Like you face Dominik Dijakovic in NXT. Like, if they bothered to have a model and tron for him why not throw him in as a playable character? Instead of just having shitty ass TBAR.

In 2k18 you had to "buy" certain people with in-game tokens you earned by winning matches. That was kinda neat. I don't think there were nearly as many people behind the paywall.

I'm seeing all the positive press for the game and I wish it success, but I dunno, I can't help but to feel relieved that I went with my gut and pre-ordered that other 2K game due out this month, Tiny Tina'sWonderlands.

Amusing reading stories of people who popped the game in for the first time, didn’t bother with the tutorial, and instead set up a squash to get used to the controls like Brock vs Ariya Daivari and end up getting their ass kicked.

Well, I wanted to wait it out but enough friends have bought it and enjoyed it where I just decided what the fuck.

Gotta say, I dont regret my purchase. It definitely feels more fun to play, though there are still improvements that could be made. The rey showcase is kind of neat. Its almost like interactive documentary. Throughout the match it transitions seanlessly between gameplay and real footage while rey narrates. Havent tried the other modes yet.

Big mistake. The tutorial is great. Drew Gulak narrates it. He chastises you for doing high flying moves and even breaks out a graph chart at one point.

Glad I went for the season pass version with all that DLC.

I didn't bother much with Showcase in the last game I played, which I guess would be 3 or 4 years ago now....the way they've done it now sounds a lot cooler.

Hahaha, that is kickass. 205 Live was honestly a really fun watch the first year, year and a half or so it was on. Drew Gulak's PowerPoint presentation gimmick definitely popped me.

Started a MyGM game. Not sure about it yet. Seems the aim of the game is to book the same match repeatedly until it hits a Level 4 rivalry. So pretty accurate to real life. A lot of my favourites are “Specialist” wrestlers who don’t seem to achieve a decent match rating with anyone you pair them with as they sit outside of the brawler vs. fighter/cruiser vs. giant paradigm.

MyFaction is different to what I expected. Could be quite interesting in terms of having matches with guys I wouldn’t necessarily play as/against.

Showcase I’m not really taken with. For me there’s too much “cinematics” and real life footage. Don’t feel like I’m getting to play enough of the match myself.

I turned heel somehow in MyRise and I'm in a feud with Elias. We're both getting booed. This tracks.

Yeah there are some real good CAWs out there already. Downloaded a great Malakai Black and Sting.

Complete a full season of MyGM. I really got into it in the end, but it is limited. I get the paradigm they've created with the different classes but it can be a bit stifling. Being able to run Specialist vs. Specialist matches that garner a decent match rating would be a start, otherwise what's the point of having the role? Being limited in not really being able to book Cruiser vs. Cruiser felt limiting too, I'm sure Mysterio vs. Santos Escobar could have been a decent bout, or Ricochet vs. Mysterio for that matter.

Nearly dropped a bollock booking to Mania; all other PPVs have a 4 match card so I built up 4 feuds to be paid off only to discover Mania is a 5 match card. Luckily managed to throw Mysterio vs. WALTER in a TLC Match on the card and got a decent rating from it.

I might come back around to it in time, I'm yet to start Universe or MyRise yet (always been put off by having to build a CAW from scratch) so will probably give them a play through before going back to MyGM.

MyRise is fun so far. Lots of paths to take via different people offering challenges.

Also I love that you can go through Universe mode as just one person. Started a run through NXT with WALTER on stream yesterday.

Two things I'm wondering: I don't know how to earn more tokens (or whatever they are) to unlock/purchase rasslers and arenas. Maybe it's a grind on purpose.

And I definitely downloaded a bunch of arenas that don't show up anywhere for me to play in. V confused.

Are you sure they’re “arenas” and not “shows”?

And yeah, I seem to have earned enough to unlock about 6 superstars but earning more seems a little harder now, albeit I’ve not done anything with universe or MyRise and barely anything with MyRise.

How is Superstar Mode? How does it differ?

This is amazing but he’s used parts from Vince and Nash who I’ve not unlocked yet. Can’t see what he’s used from Nash but it looks like he’s used Vince’s elbow pad. Surely those parts can’t have been that important?

I will check on Monday but I thought they were arenas. Maybe I did it wrong.

You don't have to watch any other matches. It simulates the show before and after your thing. There's also a "curation menu" that pops up where you can do things like challenge for a title, disband your team, and have a certain kind of match.

Funny thing about that is that it doesn't replace your scheduled match. So I won the NXT title in the opener, then had another singles match on the show.

Just thought about this: I wonder if I'll have to do that my faction thing to earn more tokens. Ugh. No interest in that.

Despite this still not being what I want in a wrestling game, this is easily the best combat system they ever made.

Hit a couple of bugs so far;

1) seems to happen fairly often when you choose to play a match in MyGM the game freezes and restarts
2) weird bug in Create A Championship where if you use the default material the belt/part appears completely black

Think I read somewhere on myrise that some of the arenas you unlock can’t be used in other modes on the game.

Seems to be a theme going through. Certain characters on my faction that don’t appear on other modes and same with myrise ( DD , Gargano with an older entrance etc).

I downloaded them in community creations but when I go to select an arena, nothing shows under the custom tab.

As far as I can tell, unlocking wrestlers is definitely a grind. A few editions ago when I last played, you could at least do stuff like Rumbles and earn some serious points each time since they’d always end up getting 5 star ratings.

Now it sounds like you barely earn fuck all with matches, like they’re basically just compelling you to spend 5 bucks to unlock everything.

Yeah it seems like you have to hit each one of your moves in every [singles] match to get 5 stars and even that doesn't get a lot of tokens.

I could also be doing something wrong, I don't know. It was definitely easier to earn these points in 2k18.

I also haven't done anything in showcase, MyGM, or faction yet though.

Looked this up and learned that you have to create a show using the custom arena before you can use them other places.

Did MyGM for the first time. Completed the first PPV and I don't know that I made any real headway in the rankings. There's a lot to track, it seems.

Yeah it’s fairly in-depth.

Some tips that might be useful:

Fill your rosters with “pairs”, by which I mean if you have a face cruiser, you need a heel giant to pair them with. I think I often doubled up so that I had 2 cruisers and 2 giants on whatever face/heel side, e.g. Mysterio (Face Cruiser), Escobar (Heel Crusier), Keith Lee (Face Giant), WALTER (Heel Giant). That let’s you do Mysterio vs. WALTER and Escobar vs. Lee, and Mysterio & Lee vs. Escobar & WALTER. Then turn Escobar face and Lee heel and you can do Mysterio vs Lee, Escobar vs WALTER, and Mysterio & Escobar vs Lee & WALTER. That’s 6 feuds from 4 guys without the game getting “bored” of the feud.

Variety is key. You need a mix of genders, classes, and match types to make an interesting card. Doing this will elevate your rating.

Be cautious of running tag matches to try and progress singles feuds as this doesn't work, it just starts a new tag feud.

Buy Spa cards when you get the chance as these help with stamina.

On that note, promos use less stamina than matches and can be used to start/elevate feuds. There is no stamina hit for being the one that is “called out” so if you’ve got 2 guys in a feud and one is real low on stamina, use the other guy to cut the promo. I’ve not tried getting a feud to level 4 through promos alone, might try that next time.

You need to be building 4 feuds at a time really (except for Mania where you get a 5 match card), aiming for them to land on PPV at a level 4 rivalry, this will end the feud and you’ll get a boost to the rating. You can end feuds on TV but you don’t get the bonus. It can pay off to end Level 4 rivalries on TV to get a good rating for that show however. I’ve not tried this but in theory, if you have a big enough roster, you could be working on 8 rivalries to pay off at alternate PPVs in order to conserve stamina, but I think managing the popularity of at least 16 stars could be tricky.

You can “rest” a feud for a week or so which keeps it at the level it’s at. So if you’ve got the feud to Level 4 too early you can rest both guys/the feud for a week, this helps with stamina/injuries.

On popularity, the more “over” your stars are the better rating they will get, so pairing 2 popular stars gets the best payoff. A quick boost to popularity can be achieved by putting the title on someone. For example, I needed to feud my womens champion with someone new but the only person that matched from a class pov was very low on popularity. Setup a title match, played through and made the less popular heel the champ. This has a hit on your now former champ but they should still be at like 60+ popularity and your new champ is now boosted up so you have 2 60+ stars in a rivalry rather than a 70+ vs a 40+.

Keep an eye on those popularity levels. I brought in a legend to feud with my champ, they became champ themselves then dropped the title before their contract ended but then I noticed they were by far my most popular star in the division so I ended up keeping them around.

Money doesn’t matter. Spend wisely so that you can run consistently good shows but the aim of the game is to get fans, not make money.

Only do commissioner tasks if it’s worth it. If you need or want the card then do it but if it ruins your plans, don’t.

Remember the promises you’ve made. On a few occasions I made promises to talent and then forgot to deliver. This affects how happy they are and can lead to them leaving the brand. Use the “notes” section to double check your promises every week.

Apparently the Starrcade 1996 arena is in the game because Rey vs. Jushin Liger was meant to be in the game for Showcase mode, and then Liger had to get pulled out for whatever reason.

They at least left Liger's mask in the creation suite for easy CAW making but damn.

The company that owns the license to the character has been stingy on giving it out in the past.

Big update to GM Mode. Added tag titles, extra match slots, etc.

They keep adding in all these secret things that will prob end up on myfaction.

New DLC was decent, Umaga is fun to play as.

I really hate the run mechanic. Been bad since HCTP. Smackdown and KYR had it right and just needed adjustments in momentum.

Finally won the ratings war in MyGM. Only one week so I've a ways to go for the achievement but it's progress!

Got v close to the 5-star match too.

MyGM is an extra level of tough if you try and book Tag titles for men and women, you need a big roster to help manage stamina and have enough parts to play with. It’s also tricky as you can only build tag rivalries via matches as you can’t do call outs, and run-ins cause a 1v1 rivalry instead of a tag one. Of course, you don’t need to have tag titles.

And tbf, I do tend to “handicap” myself by trying to have a realistic roster (I.E. only pick up legends that could plausibly still appear).

lol this mode is hard enough without an extra element.

That's dumb as fuck

I've been getting a graphics card error a lot. Happened every ~25 minutes - mid-match, on a menu, loading after I finished a match (meaning I had to redothe match) - whenever. Didn't happen yesterday so maybe I'm good now?

From what I can tell from a quick YouTube search (2K support barely useful), it happens when you book back-to-back Call Out promos with the same characters on the same show (E.g. Brock calls out Reigns, then Reigns calls out Brock).

Started again, again.

Just played through a full year without the game crashing so I think the above is likely to be the issue.

Won the season finishing on 3.5m fans. Managed to book 8 4/4 rivalries heading into Mania :lol: having experienced a show where the AI blocked me from using 2 of my guys/feuds.

Had to cut Goldberg vs Miz, Lesnar vs. Rollins, and Shotzi/Morgan vs. Tamina/Gonzalez for the Womens Tag titles. Also should have had Big E/Kofi vs. WALTER/Aichner for the tag titles but I accidentally paid that off at Fastlane.

Managed to veto one of their champs, their most popular star, and a random other. Also had power cards for Hell In A Cell, Extreme Rules, and TLC matches. It all came together in a nice crescendo.

Raw’s card ended up being really poor with their main event being the highest rated match at 3.5 stars. They still gained 200,000+ fans though.

I found that the crew and arena bonuses really help because I put on kind of a lackluster show and still won by like 500 fans.

Yeah I amassed a prettty decent roster tbf. Couldn’t even find a spot for Cena, brought Trish Status in but couldn’t fit her in anywhere. I think I was originally trying to get to Phoenix vs. Charlotte at Mania but the feud just wouldn’t start and I already had Phonenix/Nox at Level 3 as it didn’t pay off at Fastlane for some reason.

I’d previously run DX vs The Shield in the tag division. That was fun.

Yeah they’re all in there. Suffering from a lot of crashes at the minute. Crashed trying to download an image from community creations, crashed trying to create a belt, crashed trying to assign a picture to an alt attire. Frustrating.

Didn't have any crashes today (only played for like a half hour) but movements were either really slow or guys stopped moving entirely during matches.

Almost bought this, as it was "on sale".
