the Jets will probably be around 8-8 with a shot at a wildcard, but they probably could have been that without Favre.

Dunoo, if you're good at drafting, just can't see a 3rd round pick on a 38yr old QB that ain't going to be the difference between going deep in the playoffs and not.

There was talk today that Mangini and (whoever the GM is) felt that had to do something to keep their jobs, but others think the ownership loves Mangini and he could go 1-15 and be fine.

Jets fans? which is closer to the truth?

Nervous Ferret 08-07-2008 06:14 PM

After MANGENIOUS made the playoffs 2 years ago there was a huge media splooge all over him and Tennanbaum(GM), and anything could have happened last year (and it did) and he would be fine.

The Jets were 4-12 last year, BUT, they had some completely ridiculous injuries, worst I can ever remember for the JEts injury-wise. Also there were at least 5 or 6 games that the Jets could have easily won if they had caught a few breaks, and probably 2-3 that they DEFINITELY should have won but blew it because they are the Jetd and that is my life. (I'm sure every team could say something like that though)

I thought the JEts were probably going to have between 7 and 9 wins THIS season based on the volume of their offseason moves and the fact that they really were not that bad last year, but with Favre instead of Chad I think 10 wins & a wild card is more than realistic.

But to answer your question, if the Jets went 1-15, pretty sure Mangini would be out. I don't think anybody could really survive two afwul seasons in a row in New York, especially if they were to have less wins then the prior season after spending 100+ million this offseason...

As Favre arrives, Jets cut ties with Pennington
Associated Press

NEW YORK -- Chad Pennington quickly became the odd man out once Brett Favre joined the New York Jets.

Pennington was released Thursday, ending the quarterback's eight-year, injury-plagued career with the Jets. He was expected to find a new home soon: the Minnesota Vikings and Miami Dolphins were mentioned as possible destinations.

"It's a bittersweet moment for us," general manager Mike Tannenbaum said early Thursday when announcing the trade for Favre.

"I have all the respect in the world for Chad as a person and a player," he said. "He gave his heart and soul to this organization for a long, long time. I really appreciate everything he has done."

A first-round pick in the 2000 NFL Draft, Pennington became the popular face of the franchise for several seasons and arrived in training camp competing with Kellen Clemens for the starting job.

The Jets jettisoned Pennington to clear salary cap space once they acquired Favre from Green Bay for a conditional draft pick.

The 32-year-old Pennington had three years, plus a team option year, remaining on his contract. He was due $4.8 million this season and his salary cap figure is $7.8 million.

Pennington ranks first in NFL history among quarterbacks with at least 1,500 attempts with a 65.6 completion percentage. He was often recognized as being a true leader in the huddle and an intelligent field general, but was dogged throughout his time in New York for his lack of arm strength.

Big things were expected from Pennington, who had a brilliant college career at Marshall. He beat out popular veteran Vinny Testaverde in 2002 and led the Jets to the playoffs, including a stunning 41-0 victory over Indianapolis.

The injuries began the following season, when he broke his left wrist in a preseason game against the Giants. He returned the following year and led the Jets within a game of the AFC Championship, but then underwent two rotator cuff operations in eight months.

Pennington's career was in doubt, but he bounced back and was the NFL Comeback Player of the Year after beating out Clemens, Brooks Bollinger and Patrick Ramsey for the starting job in 2006. He had his best all-around season, throwing for a career-high 3,352 yards while again leading the Jets to the playoffs and starting every game for the first time.

Coach Eric Mangini anointed him the starter the following offseason, but Pennington struggled mightily before being benched in favor of Clemens after Week 8.

Pennington was 1-7 as the starter last season, and Clemens went 3-5, but the veteran actually had the better season statistically. He threw for 1,765 yards and 10 touchdowns and nine interceptions; Clemens had 1,529 yards, five TDs and 10 interceptions in 10 fewer pass attempts.

Pennington had done a bit better than Clemens early in training camp, and was considered the favorite to open the season as the starter at Miami. Clemens, entering his third season, will now be the backup to Favre.

Triple A 08-07-2008 06:42 PM

Also I love Mangini and I think even if somehow the Jets went like 4-12 this year he still would get at least another year. I don't see how they would go 4-12 though unless they are riddled with injuries, which is then an excuse on its own for keeping him.

SammyG 08-07-2008 06:46 PM

Look. I don't think the Jets will go 10-6, despite their easy schedule. Who does Favre have to throw to? Cotchery? Coles?

Triple A 08-07-2008 06:48 PM

I GUARANTEE IT!!!!!!

Nervous Ferret 08-07-2008 06:53 PM

Who did he ever have to throw to in Green Bay? Are you going to tell me that Donald Driver is SO much better than Coles? Cotchery is tremendous anyway, plus Brad SMith will act as the Greg Jennings type home run hitter.

SammyG 08-07-2008 06:55 PM

lol what NerF, the Packers had sweet receivers. Jennings, Driver, Martin, and Jones are all awesome.

Plus Ryan Grant caught some balls, is Thomas Jones really a receiving threat?

Tranny 08-07-2008 06:55 PM

I'm happy for the Jets. I like the team, and I hope this benefits them, and it sounds like it may. On the other hand, I'm waiting for him to retire again before the season even starts. Fuck Brett Favre and I hope the people of New York tear him apart.

You shouldn't really speak of what you don't know. Remember the '07 Packers had Favre and the '07 Jets had Pennington/Clemens.

Coles (missed 4 games with injury): 55 rec 646 yards 6TDs
Cotchery (missed 1 game): 82 catches, 1130 yards 2 TDs
Brad Smith: 32 catches 325 yards 2 TDs (ot to mention all the trick plays they run with him at QB and reverses and the like)
Thomas Jones: 28 catches 217 yards 1 TD (plus 1,100+ rushing yards)
Leon Washington: 36 catches, 317 yards (+400 rushing yards. Ultimate 3rd down screen back)
Chris Baker: 41 catches, 409 yards 3TDs

The Jets also vastly improved their O-Line and drafted Dustin Keller from Purdue to eventually become their new TE. They are really high on him

2007 Packers:
Driver (missed 1 game): 82 catches, 1048 yards, 2 TDs (SOOO much better than Cotchery right?)
Jennings (missed 3 games): 53 catches, 920 yards, 12 TDs
Lee: 48-575-6
Martin: 16-42-4
Jones: 47-676-2
Grant: 30-145-0

I mean yeah a little better for the Packers but really not much. Aside from the TD numbers pretty much the sameish and I think the Jets did win 9 less games so holla

Cooler Tom Schuler 08-07-2008 08:58 PM

SammyG 08-07-2008 10:36 PM

I really like that rookie Arizona running back.

U-Warrior 08-07-2008 10:45 PM

I see the Jets improving with Favre, but this 10-6 talk is stretching it, in my opinion. Quite a few teams in the AFC caught bad breaks, and could have gotten a better record last season, so that's not really a factor.

And I think a lot of people are underestimating their schedule.

and this one needs to be called pre-season then have another week 1.

went to the Pats game tonight, was gonna bring the camera, but was supposed to rain so I left it home and it didn't rain...

it's amazing what the Krafts are doing with the whole patriot place... heck even the pro-shop you can buy autographed helmets and shit...

anyway, wouldn't be shocked to see Cassell cut, he looks like shit tonight and hasn't impressed anyone, word is even in 7-on-7 drills he's always throwing picks.

Guitierez looked decent and the rookie QB (forgot him name) looked good, see him being groomed as the backup or maybe used as trade bait in a year or two (like the Packers always used to do).

Mayo looks good, strong solo takles, break through, sheding blocks... was gonna get a Wilfork jersey this year, but might get Mayo instead... gonna wait a bit (Katenmoyer looked good his first few games also..).

Triple A 08-08-2008 01:32 AM

It is a deal.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 08-08-2008 01:37 AM

Really can't believe still try to predict (and then bet on it) the NFL, it is impossible.

Did anyone really think last year that the Superbowl would be the 18-0 Patriots facing a Giants team that was regarded (by a few people on TPWW) as one of the misleading 10 win teams ever? Then the Giants beat the Patriots? Come on

Also pretty sure everyone had the Panthers as the "pick" in the NFC last year.

Triple A 08-08-2008 01:49 AM

It's not "impossible". NFL is mad unpredictable yeah, but it is a pretty "educated guess" I think. Jets were 10-6 2 years ago and were destroyed by injuries last year, and I think the team this year is better than the team 2 years ago. And with the seemingly easy schedule I dont' see how it is such a crazy prediction.

U-Warrior 08-08-2008 03:02 AM

Yeah, but the Jets aren't the only team that's been improving. The Bills, Titans, Bengals, and Ravens have all been steadily improving as well. Hell even the Dolphins are looking like they won't be nearly as terrible as last year.

D Mac 08-08-2008 03:55 AM

Chiefs should go after Pennington.

Nervous Ferret 08-08-2008 03:56 AM

yeah reuinte with Herm. Would be lovely for them

D Mac 08-08-2008 03:57 AM

Did Chad and Herm not get along?

Nervous Ferret 08-08-2008 03:59 AM

Not to my knowledge. Herm was always Chad's biggest supporter when NY was calling for Chad's head. He is a good QB. He is nothing special, but he is def an NFL starting QB.

Titans are going backwards if anything. Bengals keep losing players to suspensions or crippling injuries. Ravens just lost one of the best left tackles of all time and age is starting to catch up to guys like Lewis and McAlister. Only team that is really getting better is the Bills, and they lost a lotta guys to injury last year too.

personally, I prefer when betting on nfl games, betting on over/under rather then picking the spread.

dunno, I can only think of 2 maybe 3 teams Chad would be considered for a starter on..

KC, Mia and maybe Chicago...

There was talk around here of bringing him in to backup brady... I think Miami would be a great fit for him, plus a chance to beat the jets 2x a year.

Did Parcells draft him?

dunno, this is looking more and more like a nightmare for the Jets cause let's face it, this is a 1 or 2yr deal... if the Jets don't win it all in the next 1 or 2yrs, Favre probably won't still be around.

Triple A 08-08-2008 11:38 AM

In the press conference, it was like the Jets were dating this new chick who was definitely not over her old boyfriend and kept talking about him all the time and was just using you as a rebound. But whatever I Love Brett Favre.

Kris P Lettus 08-08-2008 12:54 PM

Saints looked pretty good last night.. 1st string offense way awesome even without Deuce, Shockey, and Colston.. Second string line looked horrid.. Defense looked OK.. Not as mush pressure on their QB as I'd like but whatever.. Stecker is a beast.. Palko needs to calm down.. I hope we keep all our WR even though I don't see how it'll happen.. With Meach and Arrington looking so solid, I'd think Copper and Henderson are gone.. Specially with how good Skyler Green is gonna be on KRs..

Who Dat??

DrA 08-08-2008 01:01 PM

The NFL isn't that hard to predict. I usually can tell how about 20 teams are going to do correctly before the season even starts. It's those shaky teams like Tampa Bay or Minnesota that you can never tell how they are going to do.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 08-08-2008 02:10 PM

Lets see your 20 team prediction then, we will compare after wards

Evil Vito 08-08-2008 02:21 PM

<font color=goldenrod>I once had a dream that every team in the league went 0-0-16 and somehow all managed to score the exact same amount of points and touchdowns and all that. So the entire playoffs had to be determined my coin flip (the final tiebreaker).

Would be the best chance some teams would have.</font> :o

Alright. I haven't paid attention to anything in the offseason this year. But that makes it better, you get jaded when you look at teams in a player by player manner.

NFC West:

1. Seattle Seahawks I guess.
2. St. Louis Rams. Is Marc Bulger still their quarterback? They'll probably be 8-8 or so.
3. Arizona Cardinals. I don't think they will ever go above 500.
4. San Francisco 49ers. Isn't JT O'Sullivan going to be their starting quarterback this year? I know Frank Gore has been good and they have a couple of good linebackers, but this is a team that never seems to get things together.

NFC South:

1. Atlanta Falcons. The team that always finishes last the year before always finishes first. Knowing this division it will probably happen again.
2. New Orleans Saints. 9-7 team looking at a chance to be a wild card.
3. Carolina Panthers. Generic 6-10, 7-9 team.
4. Tampa Bay Buccaneers. They are always good one year and shit the next. This is their year to be shit.

NFC East:

1. Dallas Cowboys. Yup.
2. New York Giants. They will be one of those teams that look awful in the first half of the season but win like five games in a row and make the playoffs with a 9-7 or 8-8 record.
3. Philadelphia Eagles. Will be like 3-0 like they always are then 5-8 for the rest of the season.
4. Washington Redskins. Even though they have that quarterback that is doing well they will still find a way to suck.

NFC North:

1. Chicago Bears. One of those "surprise teams" I suppose.
2. Green Bay Packers. I doubt they will make the playoffs.
3. Minnesota Vikings. One of those teams that get hyped but don't live up to it.
4. Detroit Lions. Need I say more?

AFC West:

1. Denver Broncos. They seem like they could be pretty good this year.
2. Oakland Raiders. They've got some players.
3. San Diego Chargers. Norv Turner.
4. Kansas City Chiefs. Kansas City Chiefs.

AFC South:

1. Indianapolis Colts. I don't see this team losing the division, at least not this year.
2. Tennessee Titans. Why not?
3. Jacksonville Jaguars. Random shuffling.
4. Houston Texans. They are just "one of those teams".

AFC East:

1. New England. No one in that divison really has a chance.
2. New York Jets. Them and the Jets will be equally as bland.
3. Buffalo Bills. Them and the Bills will be equally as bland.
4. Miami Dolphins. 4-12.

NFC North:

1. Pittsburgh Steelers. 11-5.
2. Baltimore Ravens. They will make the playoffs for some reason.
3. Cincinnati Bengals. Eh.
4. Cleveland Browns. I kinda feel sorry for them, but this franchise just has loser written all over it.

Jesus Shuttlesworth 08-08-2008 05:15 PM

<font color=goldenrod>I guess so...but they aren't exactly in a position to win anytime soon. I'm guessing we'll be seeing a Beck/Henne battle to see who gets to be the #2 QB and take over once the Dolphins fall out of it</font> :o

Jesus Shuttlesworth 08-09-2008 02:20 PM

Well I don't know if they exactly expect either Beck or Henne to be the "QBs of the future" anyway...if they where that confident with Beck in the first place they wouldn't have used a 2nd rounder on Henne

DrA 08-09-2008 02:22 PM

I wouldn't be surprised if most of my predictions were wrong this year. What I'm trying to say is that, though you really never know what is going to happen, you pretty much know how about 60% of teams are going to do. You just never know which 60% it's going to be.

The thing that everyone does is base what they think is going to happen this year on what happened last year. "The Browns (or some team) were good last year, and they got some good new players. I think they are going to be better this year." There's too much of that type of thinking involved, and it tends to be false usually.

Triple A 08-09-2008 03:24 PM

I don't think it tends to be false. It is a pretty logical way of thinking about it. There are usually like 2 or 3 teams that are completely surprising but for the most part it's an accurate way to look at it I think.

SammyG 08-09-2008 10:35 PM

Bulger 3/9, 29 yds, 1 INT.

NIIIIIIIIICE. GO RAMS.

FUCKERS.

lol @ Brock Berlin doing good.

Triple A 08-10-2008 12:47 AM

Def gonna go check out Jets training camp one day this week, see Favre and whatnot.

Gonzo 08-10-2008 12:50 AM

Triple A do you like the NY Giants? I don't recall. I know the Jets are your #1 but do you holla respect at the GMen?

Triple A 08-10-2008 12:53 AM

Yeah. I watch pretty much every Giants game too and "root for them". Like doesn't break my heart if they lose but I grew up watching them too so why would I root for like the Cowboys against them or some shit. I know a lot of people in NY hate the "other" NY team but I dunno, not a huge fan of that, besides baseball actually. Really kinda hate the Mets because Mets fans are giant dickheads.

OssMan 08-10-2008 01:01 AM

Every Jets fan hates the Giants but it's not the other way around. Also how can a YANKEES fan say Mets fans are dickheads. You are a fan of the biggest dickhead team in the world besides Duke

Triple A 08-10-2008 01:04 AM

I am not saying Yankees fans aren't dickheads b/c they def are, but Mets fans, I want to kill them. Mad obnoxious. Like any time the Mets win a game against the Yankees they are mad happy and have to like try to rub it in your face, and they think they are so cool for living in NY and not liking the Yankees and prefering the #2 team instead.

Gonzo 08-10-2008 01:07 AM

Oh Triple A that is ice cold.

Nervous Ferret 08-10-2008 01:07 AM

Camp ends here Tuesday.. When does Jets camp end??

Jesus Shuttlesworth 08-10-2008 01:34 PM

Patriots came ends Monday I believe, I was gonna go but its at like 8:30 in the morning...would have to leave my house by like 7:45 or earlier (depending on traffic) so I don't think I'll be making it

Triple A 08-10-2008 11:10 PM

Jets still have training camp Monday, Wed, and Thurs of this week.

Tomorrow and Thurs are at 1:30, that sounds like the best idea.

Wed is 8:45 AM and 5:45 PM, pshh

Kris P Lettus 08-10-2008 11:15 PM

Going back for the last time tomorrow..

:(

Triple A 08-10-2008 11:17 PM

I am afraid it is gonna be even crazier than it was the other day when I go. They had 10,500 people and that got a ton of coverage everywhere so I feel like even more people are gonna go next time, which is tomorrow.

SammyG 08-11-2008 03:04 AM

Take some pix.
