Kalyx triaD 07-10-2009 12:29 AM

Bored as shit so I'm gonna discuss myself for a bit.

I'm what most observational people would call a defensive player. The first thing I do in most matches is see what you do first. You do something (not necessarily offensive) and I gauge your reasoning, aggression levels, play style, 'combat IQ', etc. After your move I react, and we make what I call a 'turn'. A turn is basically action-reaction events from a neutral stance. After the 4th or 5th turn I'm conclusive about how to treat the fight and maintain from there.

Some of you have experienced me acting in ways that seem aggressive and bulldog-ish. Even then I'm merely being defensive. I understand if this seems subject to... subjectivity (am I attacking you in offense or hitting you before you hit me? Hmm...). In any case I will play the clock and look at you the entire time if it keeps me in a safe place (that is: a position that yields the least surprises). Me playing another defensive player is hilarious.

Know that fighting me, everything that happens is your fault.

I'm actually shit when my anger gets into the mix, so if I'm beating you it means I'm calm. If I'm calm I'm not scared. If I'm not scared you're playing my game and not yours. I take impulse and expectations into account, and I feel I do well against my direct opposites. More importantly, I know my characters well - yours, too. I know the EX immunities and the ranges. This of course is stuff you need to know just to play at a certain level, but combined with my patience I think it helps me greatly.

That's it for now.

Khuntry 07-10-2009 12:48 AM

Interesting.....

Kalyx triaD 07-10-2009 12:57 AM

Hardly a code to my gameplay but if it helps let it swim in your head for a bit.

Also, my Cammy is probably the 'purest' translation of my fighting style - of all fighting games, I mean. And for trivia, I'd say my Nightmare (SC4) is closest to me playing in an aggressive, 'mean' way.

Super V 07-10-2009 01:00 AM

I've never thought I played any sort of style. I just go to it.

Super V 07-10-2009 01:02 AM

RoXer's Akuma's and Fei Long's Kung-Fu are quite good, he was narrowly defeated.

Kalyx triaD 07-10-2009 01:05 AM

His HDRemix Akuma is far more difficult. Fei Long... I don't know... I go into FL matches with gleeful confidence.

RoXer 07-10-2009 01:05 AM

I have a feeling Super V was going easy on me and come tourney time he's going all out.

Khuntry 07-10-2009 01:06 AM

I've learned a great deal from Kalyx in the last recent months and its always a pleasure facing him in battle (not only in SFIV). I used solely rely on offense to win games but after going against Kalyx my defense and metagame shot up.

Just had a session with him last month btw. Although I felt that he wasn't at his best (I've face a more punishing Kalyx earlier) his sakura is something to look out for in the future.

Need to get back in the groove.

Khuntry 07-10-2009 01:10 AM

BLAZBLUE + DRAGONFORCE = ECSTASY
just had to put that out there

Super V 07-10-2009 01:12 AM

Where is everyone anywayz?

Kalyx triaD 07-10-2009 01:15 AM

I still think it's funny how my Sakura just... came out of nowhere and stepped into Cammy and Vega's circle. Equally funny is me dropping Ken just as fast (fucking hippie).

I can say Khuntri's Ryu taught me to watch out for that gay-ass DP juggle. RoXy's Akuma taught me to consider projectile speed at greater priority. Can't tell you how many times I jump into a fireball. The slow ones, too.

Am I the only one that thinks Guile looks hardcore racist?

Super V 07-10-2009 02:01 AM

Boomer's pretty damn ruthless. I'd say our session was inconclusive. Needed more matches.

Kalyx triaD 07-10-2009 02:01 AM

My friend's sister said Guile reminded her of John Cena.

Super V 07-10-2009 02:03 AM

I dunno man I could see him sittin in a bar with his army buddies talkin about "darkies" and all that.

"Darky tried to use some kickboxing max out crap. I sonic boomed his ass."

Boomer 07-10-2009 02:09 AM

I had fun Super V. Sorry about the constant Bison, but he's currently my only credible tourney character. The practice was well needed, and helped me work on switching up my game, albeit in small bits. Dan was the only character you pulled that I felt like I was lost against.

I would prefer to get a few simple combos into my game, but I feel pretty good about not making many rookie mistakes. I really really really want to cut all those stupid early Ultras out of my game completely. Hate it when its an obvious block situation. Want to work in the focus and pressuring attacks too.

Kalyx triaD 07-10-2009 02:48 AM

Some Audacious Tips:
  • 'Toe games', or the concept of rapid crouch weak kicks (or punches), pushes your opponent away until mid kicks are needed and so on. On defense, after you block three (sometimes four) toe kicks, absorb the ensuing mid-kick with a quick FA and dash out into defense. A quick FA will not stun your enemy, but they will be freaked out into doing a bigger move out of retaliation. This is why you dash out from FA recovery into neutral position, so you can defend their response (usually some anti-air attack). Practice this against Guiles: wait for their toe game to lead to the inevitable 2x Sweep. Block the first sweep and FA the second, dash out into defense to block their Flash Kick (90% swear to God). Make them pay on their recovery.
  • Stop jumping. Develop new ways to transport yourself safely across the stage. Dash more often and use moves that travel just for movement and not attacking (though landing a hit isn't so bad). Jumping is fucking dangerous in this game, so the meta-game is staying grounded. I promise you will see players for what they are after you lessen your dependency of jumping like a blind rabbit and half their strategy fades away.
  • So when do you jump? I'm still trying to crack that code myself! But I like to think of jumping as a counter move rather than a mode of travel. Jump in such a way that somebody wishes they seen it coming, and no - jumping forward over projectiles does not count (people prey on that reaction). Jumping forward is great if there's enough space between you and your opponent that you can land safely and defend. Ryus, Akumas, and Sagats (more like Fagats, amirite?) try to abuse their fireball (non)recovery all the time. You jump over their fireball and they're already good for an attack. Play against this. Let them throw fireballs and just jump over them. Don't retaliate. Only retaliate attacks, not baiting. Believe me, those fireballs are baiting.
  • This leads me to Cross-Ups. I don't like Cross-Ups, personally. I find them to be a long standing bug tournyfags would kill themselves if Capcom ever 'fixed' it. But it's here, and this is how I deal with them (trivia: it just so happens my top characters have poor cross-up moves, so I play against them more often than use them). Cross-ups work at a certain range that you can train yourself to see before they jump. It's just inside sweep range, or optimum fierce range if you will. You can fix this by using a traveling move as they jump over, taking you to safety (Fierce Hurricane Kick, Abel's roll). You can also merely be mindful of this range and stay close or far depending on your current strategy.
  • Also: If your opponent is in the corner and he Cross-ups you, shame on you. If they're in the corner, let them breathe more often than not. Punish their attempts to leave the corner.

That's all for now.

Funky Fly 07-10-2009 04:12 AM

When I try to think all this out, I do terrible. I try to commit new moves and tactics permanently to memory and just let reflexes and instinct take over (you don't think about breathing, do you?). The less I'm trying to deduce while playing (beyond a given feeling out period), te more likely I am to enter "The Zone" and just play well.

Kalyx triaD 07-10-2009 04:26 AM

I certainly understand 'The Zone', but I think it's more than impulse. In fact, I'd argue impulse accounts for most mistakes. If your instinct is based on outdated tactics and rigid combat structure, than your reflex will output bad decisions - however quickly they come out.

I like to think my best matches are driven by a number of micro-theories and executions than 'autopilot'. I do like your mentioning of instinct, anyway, because I believe that is very important in competitive gaming.

There's things I do in Halo 3 that I don't think about - it just happens, but only after having a theory, testing it, seeing it work, and executing until it goes into the instinct file.

Kalyx triaD 07-10-2009 04:29 AM

Essentially relying on reflex and autonomous execution should be based on practiced actions that worked for you in the past - and consistently. Conversely, actions that gave you shit should be rinsed out from your 'reflex list' (just making up terms here). And the only way to do that is to not do whatever it is you have a habit doing. You can't just stop, you have to practice playing without it. So to have good habits and reflexes that promote good decisions they must be practiced first.

Isn't that just I just said?

I learn it, test it, let it happen naturally and never think about it again.

Kalyx triaD 07-10-2009 08:37 PM

Shut up and let me wax technical.

RoXer 07-11-2009 12:26 AM

Gunna be up all night tonight so "holler at me"

Funky Fly 07-11-2009 05:54 AM

Roxer, was that you the first couple of fights, tonight? Didn't seem like it was you till it was your Cammy and my Zangief.

RoXer 07-11-2009 06:46 AM

Yeah was dickin around. Still looking for a solid 3rd/4th character

Funky Fly 07-11-2009 04:39 PM

Just thought of something: should we use headsets for the tourney?

Kalyx triaD 07-11-2009 05:16 PM

Why?

G 07-11-2009 06:13 PM

To hear my bitching and moaning

Super V 07-11-2009 06:39 PM

Yeah no one I've faced has really used em.

Funky Fly 07-11-2009 07:07 PM

I wanna use mine, but none of you fucks ever use them. Anyway, I'm gonna be unavailable for today for practice. I'll be on Live probably, but I'll be at my buddy's place probably busting out some drunken Rock Band before we bounce to go see UFC 100 and then hit up a house party. Stacked Saturday night.

G 07-11-2009 07:13 PM

My Stacked Saturday Night consists of a bubble bath, glass of wine and the newest Danielle Steel novel.

Super V 07-11-2009 08:20 PM

Opportunities to fight a drunk Chiszmo tonight around 11PM-ish.

Boomer 07-13-2009 12:13 PM

I'm again coming to a small realization that my stick probably needs some better parts if I ever want to execute links and such any better. Plus it would give me a fun project to work on.

Funky Fly 07-13-2009 07:41 PM

So that's why you're so accurate, you've got a stick.

I played Boomer earlier, but our connection was fucked. His Bison is pretty good but I think he's actually better with Balrog. Kept trapping me with distance. His Guile isn't bad either. Anyone who's played probably knows my 4 guys already, but I'm working on having more available for variety and specific character stoppers. Now all I need is a way to shut down Roxer's Akuma and I'm good.

Boomer 07-13-2009 08:32 PM

You were giving me some tough matchups with Bison...and you might be better at him than me. Didn't have enough of a sample size to really tell. I would have had fun playing a few more because I've always had trouble in a mirror match. And I really have trouble with Sagat-Bison matchups. I can't efficiently do pokes, and pretty much have to resort to pressuring when I am most frequently a defensive player.

With Guile, I just don't feel like he has weapons. I mean two moves and whatever combos you can muster is basically it. I still have a lot of fun with him, especially since his sonic boom can change speeds so drastically, but I definitely have a long way to go with him.

And Balrog is pretty damn new for me. I mean I've watched a lot of people play him, so thats just what I've picked up. That's a fun v. Bison matchup always.

I still wish my stick were better, but it obviously works better than a controller. Since its a square-gated joystick, charge characters are a lot easier for me to play. Cammy is about the only non-charge character I ever play.

So Funky is definitely better than me, but if I faced him some more I'm sure I could make it close.

Funky Fly 07-13-2009 09:11 PM

Hasney, I'm calling you out, man. Dunno how you stack up in this, as you are seeded above me and below Fig, but I gotta know. I say this cuz I am real close to Fignuts in terms of skill, so I feel like I should be fighting for that #4 slot.

So yeah, bring it sucka!

Funky Fly 07-13-2009 09:11 PM

Roxy Takes akuma mad serious. I win a round and he makes sure to absolutely slaughter me the next.

Also, your jumping nonsense will be swiftly taken care of come tourney time.

Funky Fly 07-14-2009 01:54 AM

So what's up with that 6th seed? Cuz I don't see how I'm 6th when Hasney's probably not even gonna show and I'm def on par with Figburt.

Also, played Khuntry tonight. Really good control of distance and excellent poking. Never failed so many throw escapes in my life, though.

Fignuts 07-14-2009 02:39 AM

Just played funky again. Went 3-3.

Last match was my ryu vs his ken, and it went to the 5th. Should have come out with it, but I got ahead and got overconfident. Stopped playing smart and funky didn't waste the oppurtunity.

So I think jeanpunchfest is still up in the air, to determine which of us is higher up in seeding. Will have to play eachother more during the week.

But both me and funky need to play hasney, to get him out of that spot.

Fignuts 07-14-2009 02:40 AM

Also, would love to get a perfect on roxer's akuma. He must have had an off day if you could manage that.

I did get a perfect on his fei long, but that's not as tough.

RoXer 07-14-2009 03:29 AM

Hasney is better than both of you. The two of you should battle for the 5 spot.

I'm also kinda giving him the oppurtunity to get internets in order too seeing as the first 4 get a bye. He deserves it.

If he can't get it done by then then oh well.

And besides, just win your matches and everything should be hunky dorey. I kinda like how the seedings are.

Funky Fly 07-14-2009 05:04 AM

We will see...

Fignuts 07-14-2009 06:36 AM

Dunno, Roxer. Unless the gap between us and him is huge, it's not always that black and white.

Sometimes people match up with eachother differently.

Also, don't forget we went almost match for match, last time we fought. So if you're comparing him to yourself first, remember I'm not THAT far behind you.

Super V 07-14-2009 07:29 AM

RoXer and thecc, apologies for the sudden exit. Now thoughts on my fights with thecc:

He is good. Damn good IMO. But I think he gets too comfortable when he's dominating someone, either that or my clutch is just way better than I ever imagined (even I marked out for myself when I got that awesome comeback on our first fight). Also plays a unique hit & run atyle (you'd know what I meant if you ever played him.)

RoXer 07-14-2009 09:05 AM

Fignuts and Funky are not better than me seeing as how I was testing characters for my 3rd and 4ths most of the time.

I believe the gap is big enough for Hasney to be ranked higher than both of you. But if he hasn't been practicing, I dunno.

I'm not giving in to the thecc hype. He might get 5th seed. Not 4th though.

I WILL RESEED LATER TONIGHT FOR THE LAST TIME. PRobably after I play a few matches tonight. ANd then I'll even post brackets and we can get moving.

G 07-14-2009 09:06 AM

I take it that when it's time to actually fight, no one is gonna stop playing and tell me how to do moves and shit.

I had that soundtrack on cassette. :D

Fignuts 07-14-2009 11:12 AM

Just practiced my ryu against roxer. Shoulda started with him earlier, cause there's no way he's gonna be ready in time. Maybe next tourney.

As it is, I know I'm using Abel. But I have no idea who else. E.Honda, Vega, and Ken are the likely candidates, but everyone here has probably played so many kens online, that I'm not going to be able to bring anything new up against them.

Kalyx triaD 07-14-2009 11:14 AM

My four (in order of lethality):

Cammy
Sakura
Vega
Ken

G 07-14-2009 11:17 AM

I don't think I even know the moves for 4 people.

Fignuts 07-14-2009 11:24 AM

Also, still having technical difficulties with sweep blocking. Like, I could already be blocking low, and then the person goes for the sweep andhits it, despite my finger not even budging.

At least it only happens 50% of the time, instead of the 80% it was before, but still. Gave up a lot of hits that shouldn't have happened.

Yes, but there's this thing called motivation which I don't have.

Funky Fly 07-14-2009 06:02 PM

There's achievement points and extra colours and taunts for doing it.

G 07-14-2009 06:07 PM

I know, but I'm on a "Wii high" right now with all my downloaded games.

Boomer 07-14-2009 07:39 PM

Your downloaded games will last forever, pending Nintendo trying to do any temporary blocking with firmware updates.

Our love of you will not last forever, sadly.

Funky Fly 07-14-2009 08:19 PM

Get on Live and let's do this, G. You don't really even need specials to win if you know what you're doing.

RoXer 07-14-2009 08:45 PM

Played Fignuts this morning when I got home. My eyes started to water and I wasn't pressing buttons after a while. Then I shut it off and fell asleep right on the floor for like 4 hours. Didn't even make it to the bed.

BUT HEY I'm well rested for tomight so hit me up.

Funky Fly 07-14-2009 08:50 PM

Will do.

Super V 07-14-2009 09:50 PM

I'm on tonight. Brushin up the ole skills. Tbh I still don't know the rules regarding the 4 characters. Is it 1 per round in tournament?

Funky Fly 07-14-2009 10:01 PM

Well, best of 7 matches and it's possible to beat a person with only 2 guys... so I'm guessing it's 2 rounds to a character.

RoXer 07-14-2009 10:30 PM

Yes. You can only use a character twice.

Blitz 07-14-2009 11:45 PM

Just finished a nice sesh with Funky. Got my ass kicked of course (I think it was like 10-4 or something), but I surprised myself with how well I did with Ken, and Cammy is getting there. Still trying to decide on 3 and 4. I liked Gouken, but I didn't do so well with him tonight. Maybe Fei.

RoXer 07-15-2009 12:39 AM

Final seedings are up. Will make for interesting mathcups. G might get into the next round. So will Blitz I bet. Funky/Fignuts for round 2?!?!?!?

Kinda makes me wanna post the brackets and just start the damn thing.

Zangief
Dan

and leaning towards Sakura but I'm not entirely sure just yet.

I'm test driving most of the characters today to see who I would be best with for a fourth.
I'm aware my team is laughable.

2 questions: How often can someone do a move before it's considered spamming and what happens if someone gets disconnected in the tournament?

The spamming question isn't just for the tournement but for online in general.

and leaning towards Sakura but I'm not entirely sure just yet.

Spam all you want, don't even worry about it. I don't suspect any moves that can really trap you, and if so non of us are that good to keep up such a chain in battle. So don't worry about it. After some training you'll prefer people to spam shit.

As far as DC goes, I think we should try a rematch afterward. If we can't connect perhaps we should allow others to place us?

Just got a couple of pms about this, lol. Been really ill the last week and I went on XBL today to dl the new monkey island

When is this shit going down for definite? Just so I know what day/time I have to be available for, as i'm only unavailable for like 5 hours sat and sun night when i'm working the next 2 weeks.

Also has the amount of characters/rounds etc been decided for definite?

RoXer 07-15-2009 11:03 PM

Round 1 is underway.

RULES:

- Higher seed fights on the RIGHT side of the screen. (Meaning, if you are the lower seed, you must create the lobby and send the invite to your opponent. Example: #16 is on the left, #1 is on the right)

- Time Limit: 99, Rounds: 5

- Best of 7

- 4 character minimum OR you can only use the same character twice. However you want to describe it.

TIPS:

- Clean up your connection. Do what you can, at least. Stop downloading porn/movies/whatever. Tell your MOM to get off the computer, you're playing in a fighting video game tournament for an internet wrestling message board. I think the only one who had an iffy connection anyway was Drakul and I think it's because he lives in wherever he lives. We shouldn't have too much of a problem connecting to each other. I don't think.

- Bust out the legal pad and crayon. The only way we can get your results is by your first hand account. So after a match, try to do your best to dramatically recreate what just happened. Don't concentrate so hard on your summary that it distracts you from the game, but a little effort would be appreciated. Sure you could say "I lost 4-2" and be done with it, but a little drama would be appreciated. It also helps to keep track of who you used, who they used and what happened.

- Take a break between matches. Like 2-6 minutes or so. Take a breather.

BRACKETS:

Round 1 Bye:

1. Super V - Chiszmo (0-0)
2. Gaylx - Kalyx triaD 360 (0-0)
3. RoXer - RoXer1 (0-0)
4. Fignuts - Fignuts82 (0-0)

These 4 don't have to fight this round. Awesome.

Here are the real combatants:

5. Funky Fly - Busted Funk (0-0)
vs.
12. Ant - TonyRomoASL (0-0)

- I thought this was going to be a first round walkthrough by FF since Ant was MIA but now that he has posted and is, presumably, alive who knows what will happen.

6. Hasney - Hasney (0-0)

vs.
11. G - sgand (0-0)

- Can G get to the next round on a technicality? Will Hasney's ISP continue to fuck him over? What a shame if it does. He could have been the dark horse.

7. thecc - falloftheage (0-0)
vs.
10. Drakul - Drakulbites (0-0)

- 7/10 matchups are always fun. Can Drakul pull of the upset? Or can the cc jump around him?

8. Boomer - jtboomer2 (0-0)

vs.
9. Blitz - Luneknight (0-0)

- Very even match. If blitz is able to keep up his morale after Bommer's Bisons, I think he'll be able to advance to the next round! (To fight the #1 seed. But her, one step at a time.)

So there it is. Get to it. Try to be done by Monday. PM your opponent or talk to him in this thread and set up a time between you two.

FUCK YEAH RIDE SOME WHALES!!!!

RoXer 07-16-2009 01:02 AM

Damnit. You know, It hought that was the actual picture of Blanka riding the whale in his ending in the ga,e. But now that I can see it clearly on my phone, it's a fake. Not even photoshopped. Just MS painted.

What a shame :nono:

Funky Fly 07-16-2009 03:18 AM

When does the next round after this one happen?

RoXer 07-16-2009 04:14 AM

The moment this one finishes.

TPWW is full of procrastonators so I gave them the entire weekend.

G 07-16-2009 08:22 AM

I sent the friend request. So how long do I give him to respond.

#BROKEN Hasney 07-16-2009 08:48 AM

I can accept it right now on xbox.com but still no connection.

Luckily my ISP is in my apartment complex so I can go "kick-off". They don't work weekends so I can let you know by about 8pm BST tomorrow about if you have a free ride or not.

Me and RoXer had fun timez. Getting some practice in with other charaterz.

thecc 07-16-2009 04:56 PM

Me and Drakul had our fights earlier and boy were there a few barn burners.

first fight was his Zangief against my Ryu and I just got decimated. Drak was pulling suplexes and piledrivers like nobodies business. he took this one 3-0

Second fight I pulled out Cammy to take on Seth. I played much more fluidly and took this one 3 rounds to 1

In the Third Fight his Ken Dragon punched my Akuma to hell and took this fight 3-1

Here is where things started to get interesting. As my Sakura and his Dan pulled out several close rounds. In the end I took it narrowly 3-2

In the Fifth fight it seemed like I found Zangief's Kryptonite in the form of E. Honda, as I swept 3-0

At this point Drak had some rallying to do as we pulled a Ken mirror match. I took the first two rounds and it looked like that this series would be mine. In the third Drakul put the massive ass whupping on me. As it came to the fourth round things became incredibly close. We gave everything but in the end I was able to pull out the clutch with a super dragonpunch.

It was an incredibly fun series of fights and for whoever plays him next round watch out for Zangief.
