You're blind and insane. My personal opinion, one based on years of experience, Halo weapons take more skill than most shooters. And nothing in these videos show a dumbing down of the weapons. I have no idea what you're actually looking at.
|
lol at citing your 'years of experience' as if a dozen other people who post on here haven't been gamers their whole lives.
Yes, Halo weapons typically do take more skill than most shooters. That is why I feel like the weapons in that video don't showcase that at all. All the weapons they showed in that, look like a simple point and shoot weapon. Their reticles weren't small and focused like any of the ones in the former games. In fact, they added recoil to these which makes the sight larger and even more unfocused. At no point in that video did I see anything even remotely reminiscent of the skill used with Battle Rifling, or Pistoling (halo 1). All I saw were power weapons, and shitty weapons. The DMR - All anyone in that video does is aim in the general area of the head. The reticle, even when zoomed in later in that video, is rather large. Basing it off single-shot takes a lot away from what made the BR so skill-based. Some bullets could miss if you didn't stay with them as they moved. (single shot may seem MORE skill-based, but not when your actual aiming doesn't need to be as precise) That Covenant Focus Rifle... come on, really? Did we really need a 'better' sentinel beam? Looks overpowered as fuck. The needle rifle is basically a DMR that explodes when it hits someone now. (if you can see any difference between the two guns, you obviously have worse sight than me. Some rose colored sight, methinks) That Plasma Launcher looks overpowered as fuck. The grenade launcher... ugh.. Grenades were one of the things that were great in Halo 3, IMO. Game didn't need a grenade launcher. The brute launcher was a great, non-overpowered gun. It didn't insta-kill anyone. The fact that it richochets off walls like nuts before exploding gives way too much chance. Honestly hate the idea of a grenade launcher in virtually any game. Plasma Repeater... again, where's the skill in that gun? I agree that Halo typically took more skill than other shooters. There was a noticeable skill gap. Nothing about the majority of what they showed in that video appears very skill-oriented though. The other Halo's had a decent enough balance between the power weapons and normal weapons.. but christ, those power weapons look overpowered as fuck. |
We agree on the power of the plasma grenade launcher, everything else is balanced - and I explain each. I won't because that sort of thing gets people touchy when I do that.
But I will say this a damn beta, and whatever exploits discovered will be addressed anyway, although I say again your analysis is off to me. |
Also: Do you read Bungie's dev blogs? They address just about all of your observations.
|
Overpowered weapons are nothing new in Halo, remember the Pistol of god in Halo 1?
|
lol Yeah that was crazy. I like it's new place in the sandbox now, it's essentially an alternate to the assault rifle now. It has a scope but the kill potential is still gimped at a certain range (it will lose to the DMR/Needle Rifle). It's a five-shot kill at medium/short range and will make for a great support weapon in bind (like last time).

H1 pistol was way easier to use though, making it overpowered. The reward was too high and the maps didn't compensate the way they do now [as of Halo 3].

I trust that with a response like that, none of you actually played the multiplayer of Halo 1. The pistol was not easy to be good with. Easy to use, sure. You could hit someone. But how many of you could 3-shot a person every time? I know for a fact that it was harder to use than either of you are making it out to be. And I know people who COULD 3-shot a person.. every.. single.. time.. I know someone who was a sniping fiend too. 10 sensitivity, sniping FIEND. But that's another story/weapon.
This is one area where I would cite experience, as the people I played Halo 1 with, were quite literally some of 'the best'. People who regularly played with "the greats" of MLG Halo. Several of who WERE MLG. These people lived on Xbox Connect, and people drove from all over the midwest just for the Halo parties they held religiously. (I was not that big of a player, but I was decent enough to be able to keep up with them somewhat) I can guarantee any of the people I played with would have wiped the floor with whatever 'easy pistol skills' you think you had. Which is why I think you underestimate how much skill the pistol (and other weapons) took. H1 still had an incredible skill gap. People who didn't play it competitively probably never SAW that skill gap. Because come on.. with the lack of XBL, how many of you actually played Halo 1 with more than just your friends? The good people I know, would dash to pieces any claims that weapons were 'easy to use'. Hell, those people would probably use the lesser weapons AGAINST your pistol and still beat you. I know someone who could kill you with a plasma pistol before you could kill him with a pistol. The pistol was the Battle Rifle of the game. The only difference is that it took one less shot to kill someone. Pistol = 3 headshots. BR = 3 shots to kill the shield, and 1 headshot to kill. I would say the pistol is more powerful, sure. The weapons definitely weren't balanced. But it wasn't a bad thing. They played the exact same, and neither was 'easy' to be good with. The DMR just looks... ugh. Frustrating. |
I'm sorry dude but the pistol was the go to weapon for everyone. Even noobies, once they're broken into the game, will get with the program and use the pistol. 3 shot kills aren't that impressive (me and my gang did them), especially once you find your ideal sensitivity and get accustomed to the general motion of the game.
H1 pistol was the go-2 weapon for all encounters in a game that was not built for this outcome, and not released in a time when post-release patching was normal. There was in using it in a meta-game sort of way - when you're playing against people using it and skill-gaps are discovered within players using them, but it was generally fairly easy. And fucking LOL at the idea that we haven't actually played Halo 1 multiplayer because we believe it's not nearly as complicated as you're making it sound. I suppose this is where me or LoDown claim that we'll 'eat you alive' or whatever if we ever threw down in H1 to prove the point, but we can't - and it wouldn't prove shit anyway. In summary; H1 pistol took some skill, but it wasn't difficult. Calling it H1's BR works only if you consider many people gravitated toward it, but there are factors between H1 and H2/3 that hurt such a comparison. |
Seriously though.
All those power weapons, combined with the sorry excuses they have for regular weapons... Ugh. Just the power weapons alone are going to be frustrating. |
It's not they litter the map with them. You should know Bungie regulates this sort of thing pretty well. Controlling the power weapons is something to keep in mind anyway.
Unless of course you have some issue with the general concept with power weapons, than you should move on. |
I played tons of Halo 1 system link with 16 people...I know exactly how overpowered and easy it was to pick off SNIPERS on Blood Gulch with the fucking pistol
|
Quote:
Also, to clarify.. didn't mean you hadn't played the game. But I meant that you never PLAYED the shit out of it, with people who knew what they were doing. Because if you had, you wouldn't think the pistol was easy, because you obviously never had anyone wipe the floor with your face in that game. You never know how good you are at a game until someone better than you comes along. And when those people are so drastically better than you that several of them together could toy with you in an objective game while still completing the objective... well, I hope you get the point by now. And if you missed it... The point is that the pistol was easy to use. But there is a skill gap with it just the same as the BR had. People who were good with it, were godly with it. I suppose the same will probably be said about the DMR eventually. But it just doesn't look like a fun weapon to try to be good with. It looks like a very frustrating weapon. As do all of those weapons. They're far too focused on power. Hell, they've even tried to make everything seem beefier in this game. Just the sounds and the recoil from every shot a gun makes are very un-Halolike. They've changed the way weapons in the game feel completely. I'll leave on this note - If what they showed in that video looks fun to you, then by all means.. play it. To me though, there looks to be far too much emphasis on power weapons, and the mere addition of a couple has me reminded of the tubefest known as Modern Warfare 2, and how much I loathe power weapons in shooters. The non-power weapons they showed look weak and easy to use. The needle rifle especially. Part of the greatness of the needler was the ability to dodge it. I still say if you think that needle rifle is any different in essence than the DMR, you must be blind. |
Yeah, we played "the shit" out of it. Gotta go play SSF4 now. I'll be back to this.
|
Honestly, I don't think I could emphasize how much better I know these people were than you, WITHOUT sounding like a dick. I am not trying to say it to one-up you in any way. I am saying it because these people were the real deal. Some were MLG pros, and the others were there because they were good enough to play WITH those MLG guys. Some were better.
You would call me a liar if I told you some of the things I witnessed them do in the game. It's the stuff epic montages are made of. |
They were better than me, and though I don't know how good you were at the game, I would guess that from what I know about you and shooters you would be around the same skill level as myself. And I consider myself a decent to good FPS player. I'm not the best, and I have off days, but I typically do good when playing shooters.
These people, however, did not lose unless they played eachother. |

TV spots for this started running yesterday (at least, first I'd seen them)
Crazy that they're marketing a Beta. Don't remember if they did that for 3, don't think they did. Re: the above I'm pretty certain at least some of the weapons will be nerfed once the beta is done. Kind of the whole point of it, no? |

Lol some fans just haven't let go of halo 2 yet... |
Never went back to H2 after H3 dropped. Had some great memories but H3 was superior in every way imaginable.

Me and my bro will be on the Beta once I get home from class tonight. If any of you are heterosexual enough you can join in. Pretty much playing this and SSF4 all week.
|
Downloaded it...Ive yet to play it cause everytime I try to it says the Reach server is down...but while it says that for me my friends are all playing it.

Tried downloading it, but was freaking stuck on 1% for 15 minutes so I cancelled it.

Anyway, Beta analysis: General: The interface is slick, but I can't help but believe H3's interface was better. Reach has some nice and convenient slides for the UI but it feels like how Vista feels after you used XP for so long. Seems to have unnecessary functions. Post game stats seem to be a chore to explore now that for some reason Bungie feels I wanna see the player's Spartan model while checking out his individual stats. The medals should return to it's grid view instead of a list. The Active Roster is pretty cool, tracking your friends automatically and keeping you updated. Like H2's Party System, this has to be standard eventually, though the Party System still isn't standard so... In Game: There is a significant change in movement speed (for Spartan), in that they seem slower than I remember. A lot of guys on B.net are complaining about this but it's not really that bad. They spouted BS like how it's harder to dodge grenades (no it isn't) and the game's slower (Hell no). In fact the action is more deliberate, and the general mood of the game seems to value those who think first and on their feet. I also think it makes the new Sprinting move something worth using. The button layout will take a game or two to get used. Well... maybe more, because I still press RB trying to pick up weapons. It is, however, not a mess like some have said. The transition is akin to going from H2 to H3. The Abilities activation being on LB felt natural almost instantly, though. Not being able to jump as high will affect your game if you're used to the past Halo's low gravity. I still try to jump on ledges I felt like I should. Perhaps Bungie should lighten up there... just a little. Sprint jumping feels great, though. Armor Abilities: The big addition to the series, shockingly, doesn't really change the dynamic very much. The flow is still 'Halo', but there is a strategic element. Like Battlefield BC2, it seems to reward thinking on your feet - and moxie. Although it's a team oriented game, certain lone wolves who like to pull stunts have interesting tools this time. Jet-Pack: Yeah... the infamous Ability is popular amongst fools and sensationalists alike lol. You can tell who'll be cannon fodder by whoever Loads Out with the Jet Pack first. Nobody seems to use it right and all I've seen were guys flying in the air and shooting guns that do not complement the increased range. And even if you took to the skies with the wonderful DMR or Needle Rifle, there's too much motion to trust your own accuracy. The Jet Pack is good for taking vertical shortcuts, setting up tricky flanks, and relocating to a higher position with a well ranged weapon. I highly advise not actually fighting while hovering in the air, by my observation you'd be giving the team kills. Shield: Aside from the cool pose you do when you power this baby up, it's quite useful at attracting the opposing team. It may save you in a pinch, but most players are already hip to just waiting it out and raping you after you power out. Some players even still don't know that the shockwave after the power out zaps their shield, so free kills if they stray too close (the wave can even kill weak players). It's best to use it and let your team know what's going on, while you attract people like moths to a flame, your team can clean up house or toil away at the objective (if you're not playing Slayer). One of my go-to Abilities. Sprint: About as useful as all the other games that have it. It gets you out of grenade range and danger real nice. And against those players that seem to throw grenades on reaction, you could dash ahead and whack 'em, finishing them off easily. Another go-to Ability for me, lots of conventional uses. Cloak: Cloak has this paradox that you're never really stealthy since the radar jamming will tip off the other team. While you can't as sneaky as before, it does cause a bit of panic when you come around, and that can be useful in itself. Not as useful overall as you might think. Weapons: First off, regarding Req's observations, the weapons aren't 'easy to use'. They're about as skill based as H3's package if not more so. No weapon is universally useful (even the DMR), and you will have to use the right tool for the right moments. The reticule is not a problem, everything's balanced, I have very few issues here. The Plasma Launcher isn't as overpowered as I thought it would. It has kick, but you'll rarely find a good time to use it. There's nothing I could say for each weapon that hasn't already been said, though. Other than me assuring everything's well balanced and skill-based. Game Modes: Headhunter is tough as Hell, I wonder how people land so many skulls without being hunted down. Oddball is oddball, still with morons shooting you and not the leader. Stockpile is meh, a pretty chaotic mode that I'm not terribly interested in. CTF is made interesting with the Abilities, and the super shield move is great for flag defense, sprinting great for offense. You cannot use your abilities while holding a flag, and I agree. Be on later today. |

Pretty much agree with most of that Kalyx. Postgame medals are annoying although not quite as annoying as I first thought.
Jetpack is pretty much essential for crazy king but not much else. I love the needle rifle. Not sure about the tracking on the needler, it does seem a bit too easy. Love headhunter, frustrating but in a good way. Lost count of the number of times I've been KOd like a centimetre away from the goal. Stockpile is ok but I'm tired of it on Swordbase, don't mind on Powerhouse. Not sure about Covy slayer - not enjoying it as much as regular for some reason, can't put my thumb on it. Maybe the relative lack of loudouts, I don't know. |

- Sword + Sprint = "Grim Rapist" - Seen some nifty set-ups with the overshield Ability, it's proving to be very versatile. - SWAT plays better here than in any other Halo. - Fairly close to denouncing Cloak as useless, more annoying than anything. |

The whole shild lock thing I find a little worthless.... Ive maybe used it one or two times successfully and the only thing I saw cool was a guy get blown up with his own rocket after it shot back off his shield.
But sadly this seams to be what happens most of the time. Guy A is chasing Guy B.....Guy A does the shield lock...Guy B steps back a little bit and waits patiently and right before the shield drops throws a couple grenades....Shield drops... Guy A takes damage and gets finished off by a gun or melee kill from B. |
lol
|
There's a tactic going around where somebody runs at someone throws a grenade and then shields.
|
lol Yeah I seen that. Also using it as a 'forward block' on CTF is perfect. I'll put up some files for you later of a great CTF game where I use it that way.

Also, Halo 3's playlist updates will slow down once Reach comes around, just as Halo 2 did when Halo 3 dropped:
1. Playlists are going to be combined, modified, or removed, based on how we predict they will perform once Reach is released. Ultimately the number of playlists will be reduced from its current number. 2. No new playlists will be added from this point onward. 3. Playlists will progressively become DLC required, leaving Social Slayer and Lone Wolves as the only DLC-optional playlists once again. 4. Double EXP weekends will come to an end on 9/13. But not before we throw them a little going away party. 5. 7 on 7th will live on, but beyond the release of Reach no further updates are planned for Halo 3 Matchmaking. |

Hopefully the expansion of the map doesn't ruin it...

Or you can stay in the valley.

Or maybe it'll be bigger for invasion game modes, and smaller for just slayer

That's more likely, Bungie's very good at using map space for games and wouldn't have this remake big for nothing. I'm thinking it's connected to Valhalla for some reason.

CQC Holdoff The Hill The Box Star Wars* All of my Forge maps (and unfinished ones*) are coming back in a spectacular way. Can't wait to see what I put together this time. |
I hope my friends leave modern warfare for this...
|
Forge World Details:
- Armor Abilities can be placed on the map for players to pick up. Like normal weapons, your discarded for others to pick up. - You can use soft or hard kill zones to keep players within bounds in the huge map. - Or... you can use the entire map. - The budget (Forge's allegory for memory use) will be very generous. - Still no undo button, but mistakes will be few due to new placement mechanics. - Map is clear by default, no hour of deleting or looking for canvas maps. - That odd limitation where you couldn't use certain weapons as starting weapons in gametype edit is gone. - You can earn credits spending time in Forge World, and the game will know the difference between idle, repetition, and actually editing. |
Firefight 2.0, Firefight Vs, Forge 2.0, Arena, new mp modes (I could not stop playing Headhunter during the Beta) - campaign as well - man if they upgrade the theater to allow you to edit and work with clips better I don't think the disc is ever going to leave the 360.
|
Yeah the feature set is crazy right now.

Forge World was originally five Forge-ready environments in the vein of Foundry/Sandbox (a rock spire, a cliff, a gulch, a small canyon, and a room). The main designer, in a 'why not' revelation, decided to include them all in one map.
