That would have been the way to do it, but if they were going to do it rught, they’d have done it right. It wasn’t in their wheelhouse to be sensible with what they had.

I feel like they went on vacation after WCW died. Like, they were doing well and had completely destroyed their competition and all there was needed now was a by the numbers show from there on out.

Well without competition they are the only "wrestling" option. There are other options, but those are other pass-times, genres, etc. And they've lost a lot of ground. Their ratings share is the lowest it's ever been. They can push whatever agenda they want. John Cena, Roman Reigns, Charlotte Flair, etc., and there's no WCW for people to switch over and prefer.

If Steve Austin were coming up today, he'd never get the chance to be Stone Cold. He might not have been the Ringmaster forever, but they'd have no obligation to change him. That's his roof. Austin got a chance because he was something that was getting over and they wanted to beat "Turner." If there was a viable and direct alternative, as perceived by the media or just themselves, they'd have turned Roman Reigns after the 2015 Royal Rumble. No question. But they don't feel that pressure.

And why would Vince change? If you put effort in and things get really good, then why would set standards high? That just gives you a scaffold to fall off. To be able to get hundreds of millions of dollars for a sterilized product is the dream. McDonald's doesn't want to push out genuine gourmet burgers. They want people to eat the gentrified trash an entry-level employee can produce.
