I'm not an MK fan, but it seems to be progressively getting worse as time goes on. Perhaps it was good for its time, but simply can't grow with ongoing generations of consoles.

Midway Selling Mortal Kombat

UK, March 2, 2009 - Midway is selling off the Mortal Kombat franchise, ending a long-running association with the series as it tries to save itself from financial meltdown.

Having debuted in 1992 with the seminal arcade hit, the franchise spawned some 17 games during its time under Midway, the most recent of which, Mortal Kombat vs DC Universe, launched to a generally warm response towards the end of last year.

Midway filed for bankruptcy last month, and recently handed publishing duties for forthcoming title The Wheelman over to Ubisoft. Now Mortal Kombat is being put out to tender, with the successful sale of the franchise imperative to rescuing the Chicago based developer – as well as acting as a milestone that would tie in with significant bonus payouts for "officers, management-level employees and other non-insider key employees," as reported on netDockets.

These bonus payouts – amounting to some $3,755,000 – would come against the backdrop of laid off staff having promised monies withheld, as reported by Kotaku.

Any potential home for the Mortal Kombat series remains a source for speculation.

Aw well. Here's hoping a company that gives a shit will pick it up. Mortal Kombat is still powerful name to bank off (evident from that joke of a crossover actually selling), and I think it would be a decent purchase - provided you have ideas and a team ready to bring the series into the new gen.

Actually, Capcom picking it up wouldn't be so bad as long as the only time they interact with Capcom characters is in a Marvel vs ___ or Darkstalkers vs Mortal Kombat.

why not just go for the ineveitable Street Fighter vs Mortal Kombat game.

Have M. Bison accidentally open up a portal to MK or something. Boom.

And for every improvement he makes, there's always some little thing that prevent it from being up there with other great fighters. He really might want to sell MK to a Japanese developer and have himself as part of the package. They get to make the games and he comes along to write the story.

Mortal Kombat has never been a great fighting game. Better than all the street fighter knock offs at the time, but not great. If it weren't for the gore, it never would have reached the heights it did.
