can't really argue otherwise though.

Wengerland 05-17-2004 04:28 PM

Ronaldo should probably be in the alternatives at least, maybe not the starting side.:$

Cactus Sid 05-17-2004 06:00 PM

Mackem :( ({)

Was a foul on the keeper, but I'm glad they scored, for 2 reasons

1) Extra time will be good to watch

2) Jason McAteer is, and always has been, a twat

Interesting also that Tim Howard was in the PFA team but didn't make any of the BBC alternatives, let alone the starting position.

Yeah the fact that a midfielder starts at right back shows the lack of right back talent in this country. Cos I would probably take him over any right back.

packt up 05-17-2004 06:26 PM

And yeah Ronaldo and Tim Howard should probs be amongst the replacements but not in the starting line up.

Cactus Sid 05-17-2004 06:58 PM

Mackem :(

Mind you, McAteer deserved to miss, and Whitley.... LOL what a cock. In that circumstance, the fact Vaesen was a mile off his line is irrelevant.

Feel sorry for Mart Poom though.

The Mackem 05-17-2004 07:11 PM

Just a bit y'know at the moment.

Cactus Sid 05-17-2004 07:18 PM

The bad thing is next season's gonna be even tougher

The Mackem 05-17-2004 07:32 PM

It's never an easy league to get out of.

Dazz 05-17-2004 07:43 PM

yeah that BBC team is probably the best one, much better then the joke of a team which was on the Sports Personality thing.

Nevermind 05-17-2004 07:49 PM

I hope Kevin Kyle is pleased with himself, though. Letting defenders and kids go up to take the penalties when they shouldn't have been. It shows how much bottle he has. Whitley should've known better than that, though.

McCarthy's reactions says it all really...

The Mackem 05-17-2004 07:55 PM

Kyle was the youngest (Sunderland) player on the pitch at that point I think.

He's given 100% all season and it wouldn't have gotten down to penalties if it wasn't for his goals so I don't hold anything against him. Plus those defenders took suprisingly good penalties.

Dazz 05-17-2004 08:03 PM

 looks like Wengerland, Hardkore, MMM and the Mackem will be setting up a 'Division one talk' thread next season.

also MMM, I always said that you would finish bottom,.

Nevermind 05-17-2004 08:06 PM

To be honest, I'm not too clued up on Sunderland, but I just feel that if you're a forward, you should put yourself forward to take a penalty before a defender. You're a forward, that's what you do. Your job is to score goals, and as a forward, you're meant to practice penalties. In front of that goal, a forward would have a much better mindset than a defender. I agree with you that those defenders took surprisingly good penalties, and I know you can't fault Kyle if he's been outstanding all season, but Whitley's inexperience infront of goal (I think he's a defender, right?) has played a big part in costing you a trip to Cardiff.

You're right not to hold anything against him, as it's all very unfortunate, but you have to question Kyle in not taking a penalty. Even if he'd missed, I doubt he would've wasted it like Whitley did. I think that's why McCarthy was so angry, due to the way the penalty was missed.

Penalties are an awful thing, though. You're always going to have your heroes and villians, but at the end of the day, it's all very unfortunate. I'm sure you don't need me adding to the disappointment of tonight, though, so I'll shush. :D

The Mackem 05-17-2004 08:08 PM

Well, it could be worse.

Nevermind 05-17-2004 08:11 PM

True, you could be Leeds, millions of pounds in debt, all of your best players leaving, etc., etc. Sunderland are a very good side, and they'll be back next year, no doubt about that. You've still had a good year, though, in terms of the FA Cup especially.

The Mackem 05-17-2004 08:14 PM

Maybe the FA Cup run took it out of usbut I could list 100 ifs and buts right about now. It will feel better in the morning.

Dazz 05-17-2004 08:23 PM

IF they didn't score in extra time is the main one I suppose. and If Norwich and WBA weren't in the league this season...

;).

The Mackem 05-17-2004 08:28 PM

I guess they would be 65 and 79

Dazz 05-17-2004 08:29 PM

Whats number one?

The Mackem 05-17-2004 08:42 PM

1) What if we never got relegated in the first place

Dazz 05-17-2004 08:44 PM

Oh yeah. Is number two if you realised sooner that relying on Phillips is not the way to go?

The Mackem 05-17-2004 08:52 PM

There's other basic stuff as well.

Despite not being world beaters, people put 11 players behind the ball. Of course not being the greatest we couldn't deal with this and couldn't break teams down. The most extreme example of this was WBA at home.

Then there's the usual stuff like injuries to key players like Healy, Arca, Wright, Breen, Piper to an already depleted squad.

I could probably list about 100 things that went against us over the play off games but in the end we just didn't do enough. No mistake about it we would have probably came back down but I'm more bothered about fiannacial security than humiliation at this point. It's possible we could be losing the best of an already not too good team :(

The Mackem 05-17-2004 08:52 PM

It was more a reliance on Quinn :-\

Dazz 05-17-2004 08:53 PM

Yeah the finance is a bummer for any team.

Well, except Chelsea at the moment,

The Mackem 05-17-2004 08:58 PM

Give it time, Sunderland looked financially secure (I know not on the same scale as the big teams in Europe or anything) for a good time. Things change though. One moment you're on top of the world next you're almost f*cked. Leeds being the best example at the moment.

The Mackem 05-17-2004 09:04 PM

Oh yeah and if I was being picky about tonight, I would have went along the lines of...

If only we held on for a few more minutes

If only the ref had blown for a foul on Poom for their goal

If only the ref had seen some infraction by the opposition goalie

If only Oster's penalty went in off the post

If only the referee had shown some consistency and booked the main person who celebrated in the crowd (Powell)

If only we could make our man advantage pay off

If only Whitley had scored when he was almost clean through on goal

If only the away goal rule was still used in the play offs

Those were the first few that came to mind anyway :-\

That's football though.

Dazz 05-17-2004 09:08 PM

Yeah they are some pretty good reasons. I think it was a foul, but the keeper did go over easy and I don't think he had it. Regardless to this, I still think it was a foul.

The Mackem 05-17-2004 09:14 PM

At the time I was definite, then I saw it again and thought there was contact but maybe not too much, then the next time I saw what Shipperly done with his feet. I remember Sol Campbell playing for England getting a goal disallowed when Shearer fouled the keeper.

I dunno maybe the ref didn't dare disallow it or something. It was his last game btw umm cheers.

Ogen 05-17-2004 09:16 PM

Fúck sake Mackem I just made you a thread to cry in then I come in here and find you've been galavanting about the Premiership thread.

The Mackem 05-17-2004 09:24 PM

Dazz 05-17-2004 09:25 PM

Yeah when England played the Argies is 98.

Cactus Sid 05-18-2004 06:44 AM

Heskey's gone

Kind of a mixed reaction to it, on one side we have sold the most inconsistent lump of a footballer for most of the season for a fee, although lower than what we paid for him, isn't bad in today's market. However, when he plays well, he plays well, and I worry that Houllier wont replace him (i.e the Cisse deal goes tits up)

But hey, apparently our board have accepted the Thai PM's offer, which means more cash. Not in favour of it by any stretch of the imagination, but if it helps build the squad, so be it.

The Mask 05-18-2004 07:09 AM

i liked that morgan guys quote about houllier "six years into a five-year plan" haha

You've had a good season and have just been unlucky ({)

The Mask 05-18-2004 01:00 PM

who the f</>uck would want walker in their team?

Dazz 05-18-2004 02:01 PM

A promoted team might, not Norwich though, their keeper is quality.

Heskey going still seems strange, especially not to another good team, looks like a step down for him, which IMO is what he deserves as he is not good enough, point is I didn't think he would want to take a step down, especially now Liverpool have qualified for the Champions League.

Yeah I agree. I just wanted to take the piss out of the teams not in the premiership.

Also, when threads get too big do they get deleted off the server? because if so, surely someone should make a new thread.

Dazz 05-18-2004 03:48 PM

Oh and United have had bids of 3.55 and 5.5 million rejected by Leeds. How unsuprising, United trying to get players on the cheap, he is worth at least 7 million.

The Mask 05-18-2004 04:01 PM

I probably wouldn't have made another thread, its just that if i edit the title to something like 'English football talk' or something and there's so many pages people like Ricky would have missed loads.I dunno, maybe there should just be a new thread made for everything and just archive this or something.

Actually you never gave Leeds the £30million, you gave them something like £24million. Because they were desperate to get some of the money owed early, and United said they would give them part of it as it wasnt due, and Keeds agreed to it.

Dazz 05-18-2004 05:25 PM

why does this need to be archived? Like any of us are going to read through it again.

Probably bullsh</>it, but we might get lucky.

ALSO, looks like the Thai PM is pulling out of the deal.

I do have a feeling that Parry or Moores has done a deal with Morgan, hence the speculation about Houllier, and the problem with the Thai Guy.

Wengerland 05-19-2004 06:33 PM

I heard the problem with the Thai PM was concerning the number of seats they'd get on the board, dunno how true that is.

Everton have apparantely bid somewhere in the region of £7 million for Alan Smith, don't think he'll join them but good to see some oportunism from them, they're also after Joe Cole on loan.

Chelsea have been linked with a Peruvian forward, called something like Jefferson Farfan, who they would immediately loan to PSV.I haven't heard of him.:$

Dazz 05-20-2004 02:07 PM

Nor have I, I bet ECG has, he seems to have heard of everyone. PSV are our link up club, we get first refusal on their players when they wanna sell them, and we loan them players till they get English permits .

Wengerland 05-20-2004 02:42 PM

Incidently the charges have been dropped against the Leicester three.

The links about Ranieri going seemed to have calmed down also, which is good news.

Dazz 05-20-2004 02:46 PM

have they fu</>ck, he was linked with Roma today.

P.S I always said the Leicester trio were innocent and that Dickov wouldn't do something like that.

Wengerland 05-20-2004 02:54 PM

I dunno, just haven't seen anything on teletext but thats all i've checked.I'd like to see him stay at Chelsea or if not go to another premiership club,Spurs or Liverpool maybe.

Dazz 05-20-2004 03:01 PM

Nah, if he leaves us I want him to go back to Italy, or Spain. I don't want another Premiership club having him.

Mr. Monday Morning 05-20-2004 03:23 PM

I read something today that apparently Houllier gave the Liverpool board an ultimatum that he didn't want to wait until next week for a meeting on his future/next season and it might've backfired on him..

Yas! Lovely buy from O'Leary to buy Laurson who only lost his place in the Milan team due to Nesta which theres not exactly much shame in. 3 million well spent now but another right back and a midfielder and I'll be happy

Ogen 05-21-2004 11:50 AM

Also supposed to be revealing another new player later today believed to Mark Van Bommel or Morton Gamst Pederson

Wengerland 05-21-2004 12:38 PM

Gamst Pederson would be a quality signing.I take it you mean for Villa, though i think i saw that he was also linked with Man Utd,but i just saw his name and was reading about United being linked with Heinze from PSG.Smith is close to signing for them too.

I bet Jason McAteer ends up here after being released by Sunderland.:(

According to a few people I know who are usually right about this sort of thing Gamst Pederson for 2 million is almost a done deal and we're currently negotiating a fee with Chelsea to get Huth on a year long loan

If he stays, I'm almost certain we'll come straight back. If he goes...well, Cort and Miller could still prove to be a very good partnership. We'll have to see.

Brum have bid for Gronkjaer (don't know how much)

Walter Samuel has signed for Real Madrid for roughly £15m...*exactly* what they needed, if they can find another half decent centre back they will be extremely dangerous next year (personally I don't think Helguera is too bad but he'd be better playing as the midfield anchorman ahead of Cambiasso who is way too inexperienced at the moment)

Zenden has been one of your best players I think, the guy is completley different to how he was at Chelsea, I would welcome him back here. How can Forssell even be linked withyou, you can have Geremi, Melchiot, Gronkjaer and Gudjohsen because they are shit. I hope you don't get Smertin, I'd like him to stay at Pompey as they need him more. Same with Yakubu, I really want him to stay there too. Lot of Celtic rejects their too, and believe me, you do not want Chris Sutton. Also, you know as well as everyone else, there aint no way Morientes will go anywhere near you.

Huth is apparently going on loan to Villa, I heard that too, I'd assume it is only once we sign a world class centre back. Personally, I hope that Huth and Terry play centre back for us next season, and Gallas plays right back.

I heard that in the Mail too, what the fu</>ck are they playing at if it isn't ture (as has been the case so far) and to honest I think that Liverpool fans should be majorly pissed off. Boro guy.

Zenden was one of the few players from your team to come out with any credibility after the match at Fratton Park, and whenever ive seen him he's been awesome.

You wont get Smertin because he says he wants to come back to us and the only reason that may be a problem is because his wife wants to move to London, so Middlesbrough is out of the question really :p

and Yakubu...nah, just...nah
