Even with a complete unknown in the main event, ratings for Saturday afternoon's UFC on Fuel 9 seem to indicate more and more fan familiarity with the station.

The show, headlined by former Strikeforce champion Gegard Mousasi's UFC debut, facing late replacement Ilir Latifi, averaged 236,000 viewers for the three-hour telecast. It was the fourth most-watched program in the station's history, and the largest ever for a non-prime time broadcast.

It should be noted that all four of those shows have been UFC broadcasts that have aired over the last three months. The previous live show, airing in prime time with a stronger marquee card from Japan and headlined by Wanderlei Silva vs. Brian Stann on March 2, averaged 485,000 viewers and blew away all station records. The pre-fight show for Silva vs. Stann did 250,000 viewers. Also finishing ahead of Saturday's show were prelims from a Jan. 19 FX show from Brazil, that did 255,000 viewers. Fuel is currently available in 37 million homes, a number that hasn't varied significantly since UFC started on the station.

What made this number impressive is the show aired starting at 2 p.m. on the East Coast and 11 a.m. on the West Coast. During those hours, Fuel was the highest rated ad-supported cable station in the Male 18-34 and Male 18-49 demographic, something unheard of for the station. In Males 18-49, it was the second-highest rated show in station history.

Also notable is a major shift in viewership habits when it comes to live vs. prime time.

Historically, when UFC would run afternoon shows from Europe, they would draw higher numbers on tape in prime time for replay showings than live. That has changed of late. On Saturday, the 7 p.m. Eastern time slot did 98,000 viewers and the third airing, for West Coast prime time, did 92,000 viewers, meaning 426,000 total viewers.
The three airings also led Fuel to its second most-watched day in its history, trailing only March 2.

Viewership was up 20 percent from the 197,000 viewers for the first UFC show from Stockholm, on April 14, 2012, in a similar time slot at the same time of the year. With Alexander Gustafsson vs. Thiago Silva as the main event, that was a stronger marquee match to the public. The most recent live UFC show out of prime time, on Feb. 16, from London, England, headlined by interim bantamweight champion Renan Barao retaining the title over Michael McDonald, did 195,000 viewers. The non-prime time record had been 215,000 viewers on March 15 for the Georges St-Pierre vs. Nick Diaz weigh-ins.

While Mousasi has some name from Strikeforce, Latifi was a complete unknown, who took the fight four days ahead of time after Gustafsson was not allowed to fight, due to a head cut suffered days earlier.

Ellenberger vs that faggut Rory Macdonald on the Fox 8 card.

Saffendine vs Robbie Lawler also.

Hoping for Condit/Maia too. Weltermania.

Next Big Thing 04-11-2013 04:11 PM

After the way he acted against an already beaten BJ Penn, I can't stand Rory MacDonald. Part of me would like to see him get knocked the fuck out. At the same time, the kid is talented as hell and could be the next GSP and another young star so there's a part of me that would like to see him successful for those reasons.

Two days after his 19-second knockout win over Philip De Fries, UFC heavyweight Matt Mitrione has had his contract suspended by the promotion.

In a Monday appearance on "The MMA Hour," Mitrione called Fox a "lying, sick, sociopathic, disgusting freak."

In response, the UFC issued a statement saying the "TUF 10" veteran's contract has been suspended and he will be investigated.

"The UFC was appalled by the transphobic comments made by heavyweight Matt Mitrione today in an interview on 'The MMA Hour,'" the statement read. "The organization finds Mr. Mitrione’s comments offensive and wholly unacceptable and – as a direct result of this significant breach of the UFC’s code of conduct – Mr. Mitrione's UFC contract has been suspended and the incident is being investigated. The UFC is a friend and ally of the (Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual and Transgender) community, and expects and requires all 450 of its athletes to treat others with dignity and respect."

The UFC in January announced a code of conduct for its fighters under contract.

Fox has been a near-permanent fixture in MMA news for the better part of the past month after SI.com reported that Fox, 37, had gender reassignment surgery in 2006 along with supplemental hormonal therapy.

Fox holds a 5-0 combined record as a professional and amateur fighter with all five wins coming in the first round. But the controversy has been centered around her potential opponents and whether they're entering into fair fights with her.

Peggy Morgan recently told MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) she wasn't convinced that Fox didn't hold a physical advantage over other women in the cage, despite the fact that "socially, yes, she is a woman."

In the interview, Mitrione repeated referred to Fox as "he" and "him" and said he was "appalled" by Fox fighting other women.

"It's an embarrassment to us as fighters, as a sport, and we all should protest that," Mitrione said. "The woman that's fighting him, props to you. I hope you beat his ass, and I hope he gets blackballed and never fights again because that's disgusting and I'm appalled by that."

Mitrione (6-2 MMA, 6-2 UFC) on Saturday snapped a two-fight losing skid at UFC on FUEL TV 9 when he stopped De Fries quickly in the first round in Sweden. How quickly, if at all, he'll be allowed back in the octagon to go after a second straight win remains to be seen.

Mitrione did not immediately return a request for comment.
Did not know Mitrione was suspended. Although the language he used was ignorant and disrespectful, I agree with his take on Fallon Fox. Although Fox has had gender reassignment surgery, she still went through puberty and has the bone density and muscle structure of a man. I don't think she should be allowed to fight women for this reason. Other female fighters like Rousey and Tate agree.

Kris P Lettus 04-14-2013 10:28 AM

McCorkle, who just got suspended for saying dumb shit, helped Mitrione write the "jokes" he told on MMA Hour..

I like Mitrione, but he def lives up to the "Meathead" moniker that Rashad gave him..

i didn't know they had resigned him again until the articlew about him helping write the "jokes" for Meathead and how it was dumb for Mitrione to follow someone who just got cut for the same shit

Of the 300 hopefuls who showed up at The Ultimate Fighter 18 tryouts in Las Vegas Monday, for the first time, there were women, too - 50 of them. Shayna Baszler, Kim Couture, Jessamyn Duke, Tonya Evinger, Tara LaRosa, and Roxanne Modafferi were among the hopefulls.

"It was absolutely a historic day to have the women here for the first The Ultimate Fighter tryout," said UFC president Dana White. "This is basically like the first season of The Ultimate Fighter to me."

"There are lots of girls out there that have taken taekwondo, judo, wrestling or mixed martial arts, and now they've got the opportunity to become a professional athlete and potentially make millions of dollars. I knew there was going to be a great turnout, and every season we do, the turnouts will get bigger and bigger."

UFC fighter Julie Kedzie was there in support of several Jackson-Winkeljohn teammates.

"They're always going to be remembered for this season, the girls that make it on the show, for being pioneers," said Kedzie. "I think it's incredible. This is going to spark, I think, hundreds of thousands of girls to start training. Look what happened after the first season of The Ultimate Fighter."

"It's cool to see this as a fresh start and a new beginning for the UFC. Some of these women have been doing this for a decade. This is going to be their chance to shine, and I'm excited to see them finally get the recognition they deserve."

Josh Rosenthal: MMA Referee & Your Pusher (Rosenthal Pleads Guilty to Conspiracy to Distribute $6 Million in Marijuana)

Quote:

Big news regarding one of MMA's most notable referees. Josh Rosenthal pled guilty to conspiracy to manufacture and distribute marijuana, a charge first brought up last year in his hometown of Oakland, CA. MMA Junkie has the big details:

One year ago, federal agents raided an Oakland, Calif., warehouse owned by Rosenthal and an associate that contained 1,356 marijuana plants, according to a copy of the agreement, which MMAjunkie.com (www.mmajunkie.com) obtained from the U.S. District Attorney's office in Oakland.

The drug's street value was estimated at more than $6 million.

Rosenthal is due in U.S. District Court on May 17. The government is recommending 37 months in jail, fines and five years of probation, during which he would be subject to random searches, according to the agreement. Without a deal, he faced 10 years to life in prison, a $10 million fine and a minimum of five years' probation.

Rosenthal is perhaps best known for two fights: The decision not to stop Shane Carwin vs. Brock Lesnar in the 1st round at UFC 116 when Lesnar was close to a TKO loss, and the bizarre late stoppage of Chris Weidman vs. Mark Munoz at UFC on Fuel 4 last July. Rosenthal even admitted to having a slow reaction time for that bout. He hadn't refereed a UFC event since October in Minneapolis. He was still a visible figure as early as last week, when our own Eugene Robinson interviewed him at a Jiu-Jitsu tournament in California.

You really don't need me to tell you that this is a huge deal. If you hadn't seen him in a UFC cage recently you definitely won't be seeing him for a while. Bloody Elbow will update this story when Rosenthal is sentenced next month.

Kris P Lettus 04-17-2013 04:28 PM

rosenthal is legit
