Kotaku have a rumor up that MS might cancel Scalebound later this week. That'll be nuts.

Kalyx triaD 01-09-2017 03:26 PM

Wooooow

#BROKEN Hasney 01-09-2017 03:35 PM

Man, it sucks right now and I have no idea what MS are doing if this turns out to be true. Sure, Forza, Halo and Gears will continue as normal, but then what? Crackdown has been in limbo for years along with Scale bound, Phantom Dust got cancelled and restarted with a new dev (I think it's just a remake now?), Fable was shitcanned which leaves all hope riding on Sea of Thieves.

Surely MS have some stuff ready for E3 though. Although it's not a whole new console generation, they can't have Scorpio sent out without a big showcase for it.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-09-2017 03:39 PM

Well shit, it's official.

ClockShot 01-09-2017 04:40 PM

Yikes. That's a nice kick in the balls for Microsoft.

Guys at Sony must be laughing right now.

Kalyx triaD 01-09-2017 05:42 PM

Or cutting a deal with Kamiya.

Emperor Smeat 01-09-2017 05:56 PM

Feel bad for Platinum Games since Microsoft was asking way too much from Platinum Games than they could handle. Especially with how different Scalebound was going to be compared to their dev strengths. Doesn't seem like Microsoft bothered to lend teams or enough of them to help on the project unlike Nintendo and Star Fox Zero for recent games.

Ms cancels yet another game I would have bought. Great. Straight up I have never regretted buying a console more than I have the one.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-10-2017 01:39 AM

It's so bizarre to me in thenfscr of The Last Guardian coming out this year. Yes, I know its a business and all that, but Sony had work on that game on and off for 8 years. They couldn't get the frame rate above 15fps on the PS3 and there are accounts of Naughty Dog and Sony San Diego being sent in in to try and fix the performance in that time before the PS4 version.

And for what? A Ueda game that is amazing but flawed and they never sell that well? Scalebound may never have been good, but I had faith in it. Fable Legends was actually good and they still pulled the plug on that. Re-Core was sent out to die with 1/5th of its content missing because it wasn't allowed to miss that deadline.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-10-2017 01:53 AM

Goddamn. Someone compiled the list of MS cancellations with details. Phantom Dust:

Quote:

Microsoft wanted a longer single-player campaign; they wanted various features added and changed; they wanted Darkside to help contribute card art to the accompanying mobile game Microsoft had planned. “This kind of focus change happened on a nearly monthly basis,” said a person who worked on the game.

“They asked for things pretty quickly,” said a second person close to the studio. “We kept telling them, ‘We cannot make this game for the budget you want.’”

In the fall of last year, another obstacle popped up: one of Microsoft’s creative directors, who Darkside sources described as integral to Phantom Dust’s success, left the company. His role was never re-filled, which hurt Darkside a lot—producers at the studio had to communicate with Microsoft’s creative team on a daily basis, and he had been one of their most important connections in Redmond.
One particularly strange moment for Darkside happened around then, when Microsoft’s Ken Lobb said on a podcast that Phantom Dust would be “about a 30-hour JRPG.” The developers were baffled. That was never part of their plan. “Nobody knew he was gonna say that,” said one Darkside staffer. “We were told by people at Microsoft that Ken just does things like that.”
Obsidian's Stormlands, which was cancelled after seven months of development, leaving Obsidian in a state of near ruin, at which point they had to lay off 30 people, go to Kickstarter, start work on a f2p game, and turn the remnants of that game into Tyranny.

Then we have Scalebound, which according to several sources involved Microsoft setting very high milestones and withholding pay

http://i.imgur.com/j6LFpLX.jpg

And as a result a significant portion of Platinum workers are without a task, Kamiya on mental health leave, and the studio bereft of payment for a month of work.

Nioh looks sick. Next 6 weeks are epic for me in terms of game releases. Tales of berseria, for honor, nioh, horizon zero dawn, nier automata...really strong lineup of games this year.

Be prepared to go through TVs and controllers with Nioh. Soooooooooooooooo hard, you're likely to break a controller or television out of sheer anger.............multiple times.

Nope. The couple demos they had out were enough to know the game is legit.

Sweet. I hear there's a final beta going on starting the 21st so I'm going to try and get in on that demo and check it out. Really hoping it's similar to bloodborne in the sense of difficult game with fast paced action. I like that approach better than the dark souls method of if you get hit you die...

I consider buying video games an investment.

Does that count me as one of Kojima's "investors"? Or do I fall under the category of "gamer"?

Emperor Smeat 01-26-2017 06:39 PM

Gamer.

The investors stuff is Kojima mainly being upset at how much Konami kept pushing into the mobile and pachinko route at the cost of everything else which caused the split to happen. Neither route has really helped Konami and they picked a bad time to enter the pachinko market since it started its decline shortly afterwards.

Konami was getting pissed at how long MGS V was taking to develop and the amount of money being spent since they wanted to use the extra funds for pachinko related stuff instead. On one hand, they were right to be upset since Kojima wasn't getting any closer to finishing and the project was getting too expensive to continue while on the other hand, them clashing with developmental decisions is why the game starts to fall apart near the end.
