Of course it is. It's not that Capcom want people to take an interest to start shouting about how they want it so they identify with the game and feel proud that they helped it come out in the West.

I'd gamble a house on it coming out here.

The Pope 10-20-2010 12:06 PM

They should make it so that it has apps/channels. So I can add netflix

#BROKEN Hasney 10-20-2010 12:12 PM

Much like the DSi, it has apps.

For some reason I thought the screen would be bigger.

As it is, the screen is too small.

Nintendo has contracted the production of its Nintendo 3DS cartridges to Taiwan-based solid-state maker Macronix. And apparently, those cartridges offer enormous memory space.

According to Taiwanese-site Gamrade, the 3DS cartridge is able to hold up to 8GB, but it's rumored Nintendo will be enforcing some kind of 2GB limit on 3DS games (details are few and far between in the report), with 1GB the supposed very least required. So don't hold your breath for 8GB Nintendo 3DS games any time soon; however, that may change over the course of the console's life.

Still, this shows just how much of an improvement the 3DS is considering the biggest cartridges for the Nintendo DS are only 512MB.

Remember that this is unconfirmed, and Kotaku is following up with Nintendo. This post will be updated should the company comment.

This is more exciting than Kinect, Move, or PS3's 3D campaign.

#BROKEN Hasney 12-28-2010 12:55 PM

For sure. No-ones missing out on this gravy train like they did the early days of the DS.

Most of them seem joypad controlled rather than touchscreen/accelerometer as well

Kalyx triaD 12-28-2010 03:27 PM

Like most elaborate gimmicks, things like that shine best when they support traditional set-ups rather than run the show. That game lineup above pretty much stands on its own on a handheld.

#BROKEN Hasney 12-28-2010 03:51 PM

Yeah exactly. The gimmick of most of these will be 3D, that you can even turn off. The fact that 3D is the gimmick is a blessing in disguise, no tilting or touching, just an awesome handheld experience like a lot of the DS still is.

Funky Fly 12-29-2010 02:09 AM

Fucking hell, they're giving us Tales of the Abyss which already available in English speaking markets. How about any of the 234623465 Jap only Tales of titles?

Kalyx triaD 01-05-2011 06:39 PM

It's real, but a dev-kit version. Still, fairly close to final I think.

Miotch 01-05-2011 06:51 PM

Looks a lot like a DS to me...

#BROKEN Hasney 01-05-2011 06:53 PM

If you've got the best selling console of all time, why change it?

Drakul 01-05-2011 06:57 PM

If they moved the power button to below the left speaker, they would have room for a second control stick/nub.
It would come in handy for camera control.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-05-2011 07:06 PM

Nah, the controls are fine. Pad, an actual usable looking stick (unlike the PSP) and touchscreen is great. Just make devs do a different job to the consoles and tailor the experiences to the console instead of half-award ports (looking at the early days of the PSP).

Drakul 01-08-2011 04:14 AM

A load of 3DS news.

You'll Get 3-8 Hours Out Of A Nintendo 3DS Battery
As part of its big Nintendo World event being held in Tokyo at the moment, Nintendo has released a chart outlining the final hardware specifications for the 3DS. Most importantly, that includes details on the handheld's battery life.

It takes 3.5 hours for a 3DS battery to fully charge, which is pretty good. As for how fast that battery drains, Nintendo has only provided a select number of figures, all based on the presumption you're using the handheld on a lower screen brightness level.

With the screen's backlighting turned down (but not off), you'll get 3-5 hours of battery life while playing a 3DS game. That number extends to 5-8 hours if you're playing an older DS game on the handheld.

Of course, the more you increase the screen's brightness, the bigger the hit the 3DS' battery life will take. While people will be upset that these numbers seem low for a Nintendo handheld, they're not that far off what you'd expect from a DSi, and considering the 3DS is a much more powerful device, all that extra grunt takes its toll on a battery.

If you're after definitive battery life tests on a unit under all kinds of circumstances, we'll have to wait until people can use one without Nintendo employees standing over their shoulders

The Japanese site Inside Games puts the price of 3DS games at 5800 Yen, compared to the common 4800 Yen price for regular DS games, according to a translation of the story on website Andriasang.. That would make a 3DS game cost the equivalent of $70 US compared to $58 US for DS games.

Nintendo hasn't revealed game prices in America or Japan, but the Inside Games report signals that software may cost more on the 3DS than on the DS. In the U.S., top DS games often go for about $30-$35.

(In Japan, the 3DS will sell for 25,000 Yen or about $300 US; there's no hardware price confirmed for the U.S. yet.)

Inside Games also reports that the 3DS will launch in Japan with 10 games. Nintendo is showing more than that during their Tokyo event this weekend, a sign that the glasses-free 3D successor to the DS is still getting a lot of support from game creators.

The 3DS is scheduled to launch on February 26 in Japan. It'll be out in America in March, though we don't have an exact date or price (presumably to be revealed at a 3DS press event in New York City on Jan 19).

A spokesperson for Nintendo of America was unable to comment on these details which, it should be clear, were not announced by Nintendo in Japan.

Nintendo's 3DS event in Japan — Nintendo World 2011 — kicks off in just a few hours. We'll be keeping an eye on it and letting you know the latest about the games and news coming out of it.

Note these are the Japanese launch titles, and that the US and European lineup will likely differ.

The lineup, and prices (in yen) are:

Quote:

Nintendogs & Cats ¥4,800

Winning Eleven Soccer 3D ¥5,800

Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition ¥4,800

Samurai Warriors: Chronicle ¥6,090

Puzzle Bobble 3D ¥4,980

Ridge Racer 3D ¥6,090

Battle of the Giants: Dinosaurs 3D ¥5,040

Professor Layton and the Mask of Miracle ¥5,980
Roughly speaking, half of these titles (the more expensive ones) are priced around the region of a PSP game in Japan, the other half around that of a regular DS title.

2006-2007 was kinda rocky.

Fignuts 01-08-2011 10:59 PM

Looking at the handheld, I don't see any modern fighter being comfortable to play. Especially not something like blazblue.

Funky Fly 01-08-2011 11:05 PM

Actually, I lied in the street fighter thread. Tekken 5: DR is great on the PSP. Other than that, I do not really enjoy handheld fighters.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-09-2011 06:10 AM

Dunno, I found the DS and PSP just as comfortable to play fighting games as using the standard joypad on a console.

Mercs looks horrid but Revelations is boner-worthy.

Not only that, but Capcom are promising a lot more from the game, including more characters than just Jill and Chris.

Drakul 01-10-2011 12:30 AM

Merceneries looks like something they should have just stuck on to Revelations as an unlockable extra game, like they usually do with those types of R.E.

Does anyone know if the games are going to be the same size as original DS games, or did they change that again?

Drakul 01-11-2011 09:42 PM

If you mean size as in memory, they can hold up to 8gb but Nintendo has imposed a limit of 2gb per game.
I'm guessing this is so they can gradually allow more and more memory to be used to keep things fresh.

If you mean size as in dimension of the cartridge, it's about the same as a regular DS game.

Emperor Smeat 01-12-2011 01:19 AM

The size is also to decrease costs for both Nintendo and publishers since its a bit expensive to be cranking out millions of 8 GB cards and to keep initial 3DS development costs down.

When Sony introduced UMDs, it was a bit expensive to make due to how Sony designed the discs and the need to make the PSP appear like a portable PS2. It meant pretty expensive development costs for launch games (PS2 range) compared to N64-level costs for making a DS game.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-12-2011 08:27 AM

I bet before the console is dead, it'll even go up to 16gb.

Not that I can see why, MGS3 can fit on a 2gb card, 3D cinematics and all.

Mike the Metal Ed 01-15-2011 03:54 PM

So apparently it's region-locked... bugger. :(

http://www.neogaf.com/forum/showthread.php?t=418359

Funky Fly 01-15-2011 06:59 PM

Well gay.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-15-2011 07:02 PM

The region locking is possibly a dealbreaker for a pre-price cut purchase. Might have to wait until Resident Evil or MGS3 is out at the very least now I think.

I'll see what the launch price is when they announce it on the 19th.

Drakul 01-18-2011 12:16 PM

I think I may have found the release date for the 3DS in the UK. GAME has 3DS games up for preorder and they all say March this year. One game has a specific date in March.

Ridge Racer is due out on the 25th of March. So that's possibly the release date of the 3DS but, if it's not, at least we know it's before then, at least.

The 3DS European relase date will be revealed on Wednesday by Jonathan Ross, according to his Twitter.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-18-2011 12:21 PM

Well Wednesday is when Nintendo are announcing all their launch details.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-18-2011 12:23 PM

But fuck my life, my bonus comes through on the 26th April when none will be left.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-18-2011 12:54 PM

3DS will defo be region locked, but it will be like a 360 type deal where it's on a per game deal.

Funky Fly 01-18-2011 03:11 PM

Still, why?

I don't get region locking at all (except places like China and Australia where censorship is the norm).

#BROKEN Hasney 01-18-2011 03:50 PM

They're saying for the region locking to work, it needs to be done due to the different rating boards in Japan, US and Europe.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-19-2011 09:14 AM

And are in talks with Sky for Sky 3D content.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-19-2011 09:16 AM

Streetpass is the name for your 3DS always being "on" and when you pass people in the street, their Mii's will be on your plaza and you can see what they have been playing.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-19-2011 09:25 AM

Capcom now. They have been using Streetpass tech in developping Super Street Fighter IV 3D Edition. Ono-san is taking to the stage.

"Hello everyone," he says via a translator. Excellent hair.

He wants us to all raise our hands and sai Haiduken. I can't do that and live blog, Ono-san. THINK THESE THINGS THROUGH FIRST

#BROKEN Hasney 01-19-2011 09:27 AM

"Today I'm here to present Virtual Boy 2 - er - 3DS!" Ross says he has one "and the headaches to prove it".

#BROKEN Hasney 01-19-2011 09:31 AM

in SSF4, you can leave the system on and it will battle people based on your skill level as you pass them in the street and if you're good at local/online gaming, you'll beat them.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-19-2011 09:34 AM

If people are playing local multiplayer SSF4 in front of you, you can link your 3DS in and watch so you're not that annoying guy over peoples shoulders.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-19-2011 09:36 AM

3DS can act as a pedometer. Earn Play Coins & trade them in for new content in compatible games and applications.

The US conference is over and was pretty much to the point. EU one still rambling on.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-19-2011 09:49 AM

List of games that will be in the "launch window" which is before E3. Should be 30 games out by then, including:

  • Pilotwings Resort
  • Nintendogs + Cats
  • Steeldiver
  • Dead or Alive
  • Pro Evolution Soccer 2011 3D
  • Madden NFL
  • Super Street Fighter IV 3D
  • Asphalt 3D
  • Combat of Giants: Dinosaurs 3D
  • Ridge Racer 3D
  • Resident Evil: The Mercenaries
  • LEGO Star Wars III: The Clone Wars

#BROKEN Hasney 01-19-2011 09:50 AM

PES 3D has a behind the player camera for Be A Legend mode, which should be awesome for 3D.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-19-2011 09:54 AM

They're still waffling and I need a meeting, so when the Euro launch details are announced: FILL ME IN

Drakul 01-19-2011 10:11 AM

Europe release date: 25th March.

GAME leaked it after all.

Friend Code info:
Quote:

The Friend Code, the bane of every modern Nintendo gamer's existence, is getting a major overhaul with the release of the 3DS, allowing friends to find friends with little to none of the hair-pulling frustration that is currently involved.

Gamers who try to play online with others using the DS or the Nintendo Wii currently have to exchange a set of 16-digit numbers to connect. Sometimes they have to do so twice, depending on the game they play. And often the game doesn't remember those codes, turning an online session of gaming into something more akin to math than fun.

But the 3DS fixes some of that when it hits Japan in February and the U.S and Europe in March. The new Friend Code system will now be tied directly to the 3DS you own and there will only be one for each system, so no more secondary Friend Codes for games.

The system, Nintendo tells us, will also be able to remember the codes you put in for your Friends and track whether they are currently online or not. If they're online, one of the lights in the top right corner of the portable will glow orange to alert you.

The 3DS will have an app that tracks and can give you the current status of your friends at any given time.

And finding and becoming friends sounds like it will sometimes be easier as well. While we don't yet know if they Friend Code will be a 16-digit number, or even a number at all, we do know that you will have to exchange them just once with your friend to offer and accept a friendship on the 3DS.

But if you're connected with another friend via local wireless, you won't even have to do that. Instead you can push a button to accept or send friend requests and the 3DS will take down the number automatically and remember it.

While this new system still isn't as effortless as being able to create easy-to-remember user names and connect them with a message from anywhere, a system that both the PS3 and Xbox 360 use, it's much better than the intricacies and extra numbers of the current Wii and DS Friend Code system.

What we don't yet know, what no one at the event could yet answer for us: What format will the Friend Codes be in? Numbers or names and how long are they. And is there a cap for your friends list.

Really hope it turns out to be some kind of name rather than a number.

Kalyx triaD 01-19-2011 02:00 PM

So basically gamer IDs as we know them? Might as well get rid of 'codes' and have names. Though with how people tried to be 'clever' with their names on consoles, it may still use a coded system (and nicknames will be private).

Wonder if the Wii will adopt this.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-19-2011 02:39 PM

It's a 12 digit number. It's already present in SSF4.

I'm fine, your name will still be there, just can't ad people with it.
