SHAD KHAN STATEMENT ON AEW, Tuesday, January 8, 2019

I am the lead investor, a supporter and a backer of All Elite Wrestling, and I anticipate great things today and into the future for AEW and everyone who has worked passionately on this week’s launch. I know AEW will be welcomed by wrestling fans here in the U.S. and throughout the world who are ready for something new and authentic. AEW will work hard to deliver on that promise.

As important, I am the father – the proud father – of Tony Khan, who will serve in a leadership role at AEW during the 2019 launch and in the years ahead. Tony will assemble a great team to take AEW over the top, for the benefit of everyone who loves the wrestling industry, while continuing to serve in his current capacities with the Jaguars and Fulham.

AEW will operate as an organization completely independently from my other interests. It will not deter attention or divert resources from any of my businesses, teams, projects or investments. At the same time, AEW will enjoy the same full commitment I given to everything and everyone in my life – my family and friends, my business and, in recent years, to sports, hospitality and now entertainment.

TONY KHAN STATEMENT ON AEW, Tuesday, January 8, 2019

Wrestling fans are a community unlike most others. I’ve been a part of this community since I was 7 years old, and I can tell you that wresting fans see the world every day through a special lens. We see wrestling in Hollywood films and tv shows, we see elements of wrestling in the presentation of sports and in the marketing of grandiose star athletes, and we certainly see wrestling in politics.

The wrestling community is a constant; its members are diverse, we are physically located on all corners of the planet, yet we are constantly connected. Recently, a new family has formed, bonded by love and respect for wresting but armed with a vision and resources that have never before been available to the wrestling community. Our objective is to connect our community closer than ever before through All Elite Wrestling, or AEW.

AEW does not mean any less of a continued commitment to existing obligations and duties that I have, or my family has, to our business and sports interests. That will never be the case. What’s important is that every individual decision we make as family, whether it’s ownership or investment in a team or property, is 100 percent beneficial to those specific interests. I will always welcome that accountability and responsibility, as nothing is more important than serving our supporters and friends.

AEW will launch with a roster of the top wrestlers in the world. While they’ll clash in what will be some of the most intense and fast-paced contests ever sanctioned in the squared circle, they’ll also share a common goal: to make this the true golden age, to make this the greatest time ever to be a wrestling fan. Likewise, as a business, by treating our wrestlers with respect and warmth, we also seek to make this the golden age for the performers themselves.

I urge everyone who believes in what we’re doing, or wants to believe in dreams coming true, to support AEW by spreading the word and passing the wrestling bug onto someone else. My message: Get in on the ground floor with AEW today and help lead our movement to grow the wrestling community and ensure that the voices of the wrestling fans, their creative minds and their remarkable ideas, will always be heard.

Some are hit-and-miss, very meta to someone not on the track, let me tell ya something, BroJaw, things are looking up for wrestling as Tatanka v.s Lex Luger is being advertised for March. Don't know how, but maybe they will stand in the ring and tell everyone about 1993

Dude as I've said before you really don't understand the wrestling landscape. The GWN has probably 10-15 promotions alone that air on it. Those are successful partnerships. Then you have the major partnership with AAA which has been good to both. They did 3 actual PPVs last year plus their One Night Only PPVs and Twitch specials that were usually done with other promotions.

I don't know why you say they're not doing well with live crowds. Obviously it's because you haven't seen what they are doing. Every PPV and taping had a sold paying crowd. That's alot different than letting everyone in for free at Universal.

Jericho and crew will come eventually. They are not going for a fast rebuild. They've went back to the basics and its been successful, I never thought Jericho would show up last year. That was mostly alot of internet hype from a Jericho interview.

You’re such a muppet.

You can say I don’t understand something as much as you like. It doesn’t make it true or false. You don’t understand general human empathy. See how easy that is?

I’ve been on the internet following wrestling for years and have barely heard of GWN. How many people actually have it? If you get five people here that do, I would be pretty surprised. Lol, getting a deal with AAA seems pretty foregone when all the good promotions go with CMLL. Sorry, I rephrase my question: How many PPVs did TNA run last year? Like, three?

I say they’re not doing good with live attendance because I just saw a photo of about 30 people in a building with a report saying the lights go out and people were leaving. Getting a crowd of any description to pay any amount of money does not a successful live audience make.

We’ll see. I never said I thought you thought Jericho was coming in last year. I just knew he wouldn’t, because even though his best friend runs it, it is toxic to star power. They might try to change that with AEW to get any attention they can, but I think it is a bad idea, because TNA fucking sucks. I know I’ll be out if TNA is in. If Kenny Omega went there, people would stop caring about him in a month. He has to know that.

Getting Janela is pretty great for AEW just from a management perspective.

Has a proven track record of being very good as a booker and having a good eye for talent based on his themed shows and making stars from irrelevance in the indies.

With Jericho jumping, you have a HUGE signal to just about anyone anywhere that this is a legit option. Whether or not that's true, it's a HUGE sign of belief in it.

Can't be understated how big of a deal that is for them.

Dark One 01-08-2019 05:52 PM

Also yet another interesting bargaining chip in getting NJPW to play ball, in tandem with Omega surprising them by going "Ehhhh... I'm good man. Gonna go play with my friends." (Presumably)

Dark One 01-08-2019 05:52 PM

Not terribly surprising that Jericho jumped. He didn't make a secret of how much he loved the Being the Elite shit and his cruise and doing his own thing again. Probably an easy choice for him once he was away from WWE long enough.

Lock Jaw 01-08-2019 05:54 PM

Fignuts 01-08-2019 05:56 PM

Dark One 01-08-2019 05:56 PM

PAC vs Page will be a hell of a match for Double or Nothing, Jericho will draw a lot of fan attention that may not already be hooked into The Elite.

SCU, The Elite guys, Page, PAC, Jericho, and even MJF is a hell of a foundation for a company starting out, and that's just a start. Production values on the press conference were kind of shit, but it's their first solo production and it was in a parking lot in Jacksonville.

Fignuts 01-08-2019 05:59 PM

Fuck if they can get Pentagon and Fenix as well, that’s gonna be an amazing roster. Hope they don’t go to impact

Dark One 01-08-2019 05:59 PM

Jericho moved the needle relatively hard for NJPW World last year, if I recall, so him being part of Double or Nothing is pretty huge.

Also, assuming Kenny does indeed go to play with his friends, we could potentially get Omega vs Jericho 2 at Double or Nothing which would be incredible.

Simple Fan 01-08-2019 06:00 PM

Yes I hope so too. Double hoping for Jericho and Pentagon to face off at Double or Nothing. Was hoping for that at Impact last year.

They had a good presser, big announcements with Pac and Jericho, and Joey Janella was a good get. Was really waiting for Kenny but time will tell. I hope that is where he ends up.

OWE is a very lucha style in general, the head trainers are mostly former luchadors. Pro Rasslin hasn't ever been real popular in China so there weren't any Chinese pro wrestlers of notoriety to choose from so the billionaire who started OWE hired Luchadors to bring pro wrestling to China.

xrodmuc316 01-08-2019 08:13 PM

Not impressed with Jericho going there, only because he ran his mouth patting himself on the back for YEARS about how he would never work for anybody but Vince.

Just don't brag about something like that and I would be fine with him signing there, but as it is him signing there just means he is full of shit and nothing he says means anything.

Evil Vito 01-08-2019 08:22 PM

WWE seem to be pissed off about it.

Apparently he was still listed as being part of the SmackDown roster all the way up until this morning. And he got moved to the Alumni second almost instantly after the announcement.

Oh I'm sure Jericho will have a successful run, dude is as close to a sure bet there is in pro wrestling.

That said, it does hurt his credibility.

Neville signing does nothing for me. He is just a rehash character of what he was in WWE, with the addition of WWE held me back. That is the same gimmick every new Impact wrestler had from like 2005-2014.

Neville didn't move the needle as NXT champ, he didn't move the needle upon his WWE callup, and he only moved the needle as a cruiserweight because he actually had a character instead of being a spot monkey guy from the CWC.

If I am being honest, if they want to do something interesting, they need to sign some people that werent already "All In". Otherwise just say off the bat its gonna be the same people and move on.

xrodmuc316 01-08-2019 08:53 PM

Ehhh maybe I'm just cynical from years of WWE being lazy and even more years of Impact being absolute garbage.

Most importantly, these guys are basically all the same to me. Workrate and superkicks. I can see those guys in WWE with Ziggler and Rollins and the Usos and a few others. I am gonna want more then the "hey we are all friends and we believed in ourselves enough to make this happen and yay".

Loose Cannon 01-08-2019 08:58 PM

Jericho signing is definitely a big deal for them. To me it says the top level talent are trusting Cody to do a good job. Jericho wouldn't just sign with anyone is he felt the gig would suck.

It gets people talking at least. hopefully they can continue building on the momentum they have right now.

Most importantly, these guys are basically all the same to me. Workrate and superkicks. I can see those guys in WWE with Ziggler and Rollins and the Usos and a few others. I am gonna want more then the "hey we are all friends and we believed in ourselves enough to make this happen and yay".

The slow dissolution of the bullet Club followed by the reconciliation and creation of the elite was a good story that brought lots of eyes to NJPW and BTE. So they have the potential to have entertaining stories. That said creating a storyline and juggling numerous storylines for an entire promotion are two different things, so we’ll see.

They need Bruce Campbell as an on air personality. I don't give a shit if he knows a lick about the business.

It gets people talking at least. hopefully they can continue building on the momentum they have right now.

It really doesn't mean any of that. It doesn't mean anything more then Jericho agreed to be affiliated and have a few matches in exchange for talent getting booked for his booze cruise once or twice a year.

He can be a ring announcer. He has experience in that. :shifty:

I gotta say, I’m way on board for the teases Hangman/PAC feud. I fuckin loved what I saw out of Hangman in the G1 last year and I think he can be a star. I adored PAC’s 205 run. Could be an interesting dynamic with some killer matches.

Oh, man. I forgot about his Spiderman cameos.

I've been watching the AEW rally off and on. the fuq is with Neville interrupting with wrestling gear on? lol fucks sake, man.

Damn...the pyro and fireworks for the rally probably equaled a year of WWE's.

Vegas is about four hours away.

Party time.

Oddly enough, Jericho's appearance made me think of Terry Funk; in that I would imagine he will be with AEW in a similar capacity to how Funk was in ECW - spreading knowledge, adding name rub, and putting over future stars. But that's just a guess.

So, let's piss off the fans who likely watch *everything* for being spoiled for choice anymore and actively punish them by not letting them pay you money to see your show? This is a bit different than shitcanning Jimmy Jacobs for taking a selfie over something their company did almost two decades previously... this is way more petty. And it is a petty that tangibly can bite them in the ass.

It also feeds the trolls who will now be trying to "sneak in" signs and shirts to specifically get on TV with. If they continue down this road, they will do nothing but give them more pub than they did with the "cease & desist" business over "Suck It". AEW shirts will go from being just a shirt in the crowd that fans have like actual Bullet Club shirts to a statement of anti-WWE that WWE will themselves stoke the flames for.

Streisand Effect divided by self-fulfilling prophecy with a remainder of that time WWE event staff moved a row of cosplayers off camera and The Rock got them on TV anyway.

xrodmuc316 01-09-2019 12:03 AM

Man that rally was cringe as all hell.

1. Jericho coming out was supposed to be a big surprise, Conrad even acting like it was unknown who it could be. Except dude came out to who own music. Who the fuck else would be coming out to Fozzy?? Lol
2. So their first show is May 25th, 4 and a half months away. Why the fuck is Neville wearing his gear already?. The match is 4 and a fucking half months away!
3. Since everybody has dual roles, does that mean Britt Baker is the official fentist?
4. Christopher Daniels is way to old to be acting "funny giddy cool"
5. Can the Khans not afford microphones that don't pick up the hard P? Sounded like garbage.
6. Can they also not afford a sound stabilizer of any kind? Went from dead silence to normal to could barely hear to trying to blow out my speakers
7. Maybe next time they should get a podium short enough that the young bucks don't look like kids at.
8. Jericho wants to change the Universe!!! They were so close to getting through the rally without going full TNA and alluding to WWE. Oh well
9. Oh no, WWE didn't let in anybody who went to the rally. All 200 of them couldn't be jackasses on WWE TV WAAAHHHHHH.

That's the thing. By simply assuming that 200 people were going to "act like jackasses" and denying them entry, they've ensured more people will do exactly that in the future in an intentional act of trolling. That's some wrestling 101 shit; tell the fans not to do something, and that makes them do it harder. If WWE would have no-sold this rally, they remove the potential to make it a thing. Like when they tried to quell CM Punk chants by saying he was a quitter instead of just letting it run its course.Fans prolonged that shit do to spite that they brought upon themselves because, by addressing it, they made it seem like what was happening was a work and leading to some grandiose return - and if it was, in fact, the shoot it ended up being, just cast the company in a super petty light that, once again, the fans can rebel against.

Fignuts 01-09-2019 12:39 AM

You seem like you want this to fail.

That last one could be an potential ominous sign for World of Sport's future considering she was one of the talents signed there and its on even shakier ground than Lucha Underground has been the past few years.

Fignuts 01-09-2019 12:53 AM

Well WWE already got Kairi and Sharai. AEW might as well try for Iwatani before WWE gets her too.

Emperor Smeat 01-09-2019 01:09 AM

Newest rumor going around the net hints at AEW being very close to getting a tv deal signed and in the range of around $100 million in value.

Tom Guycott 01-09-2019 01:15 AM

If nothing else, AEW will hopefully help poke a hole in WWE's "toy collecting". WWE can't sign everybody just to not use them and only push their own Vince-made stars.

Emperor Smeat 01-09-2019 01:23 AM

Also rumored is Impact being worried of a mass exodus occurring in March since that is when the next batch of contracts expire. Rumored to be trying to get a partnership done beforehand so they can keep some potential access to whoever leaves for AEW.

Those two posts are right on the money. This is an amazing sign of faith from Jericho (since Vince is now going to be heartbroken), and it’s a huge “look at how serious we are”. Great bargaining chip for negotiating with New Japan too. Kenny Omega and Kota Ibushi will also provide that if they sign.

Just don't brag about something like that and I would be fine with him signing there, but as it is him signing there just means he is full of shit and nothing he says means anything.

1. Jericho is a worker.

2. I don’t know if that’s “bragging.”

3. It might have been true at the time.

4. This says how big his move is

What do you mean “move the needle”? That seems an odd expression to use for a dude in NXT and on 205 Live when receiving his pushes. Also, he wasn’t “All In”, and they got him. More will come.

$100 million is about as high as I thought they could possibly go. Good on them if that is the case. I wouldn’t even want to go as high as Vince, because I think it’s a more effective strategy to make his product overpriced so networks come down on him. That’s going to hurt him (if “hurt” is the right word) way more than anything else.

Ultra Mantis 01-09-2019 06:58 PM

I wouldn't put any stock on Ibushi signing a contract for anybody, especially a foreign company. He doesn't speak any English and is notorious for having constant travel nightmares whenever he goes to the US, including getting on the wrong flight and ending up on the opposite side of the country, locking himself out of the hotel, forgetting which hotel he checked in at, losing his phone and wallet, generally not having a good time. If he's going to be working for AEW it would most likely be freelance.

Mr. Nerfect 01-09-2019 08:35 PM

We’ll see.

Franco Vazquez 01-09-2019 08:39 PM

This Shad and Tony Khan are really shady. They wanted to buy Wembley as well but couldn't. The year he bought Fulham, they got relegated for 5 years so this guy has got that bad luck charm attached to him
