Because Shearer needs someone like Owen to run for him, he's 36 now and practically carrying an injury prone team all by himself.His performances when owen was playing were far different from when he's playing wiht Ameobi.I think Ameobi will improve once sheraer retires, because he knows he's not going to get in the team while Shearer and Owen are there, so that's going to affect his confidence quite a bit.
