Nah, he's just been a monster in the bullpen. Consistently 95-96 on the gun.

Although I'd still rather have him as the 5th starter right now.

Hanso Amore 07-18-2009 12:57 AM

Honestly, joba should have never left the pen

Dragon 07-18-2009 01:53 AM

I dunno, I'm still on the Joba+Hughes in the rotation side of things.

8.5 games out now :-\ Hate to say it but they basically need to be sellers now...not that they really have anything to sell. They just can't make a trade now though. It would be irresponsible to trade any prospects at this point, just like 2004.

Castillo and Perez' contracts won't be touched by any teams with a 10 foot pole. Sheffield will probably gain interest from someone since the Tigers are paying his entire salary. Delgado probably WOULD have been a prime trade candidate but nobody is gonna give up anything notable for him since he hasn't played since May and isn't due back until August.

I would take a long, hard look at dealing one of the core guys this offseason if the deal is right. I remember earlier in the year a Red Sox beat writer proposed a trade for Reyes that saw the Mets getting an absolute haul (Buccholz, Ellsbury, Lowrie, and someone else) which honestly, as much as I love Reyes, that would be a hard deal to pass up. But now there's no way Boston would give all of that up after Reyes is missing half the season with a hamstring injury.

And despite all of this, Omar and Jerry will both keep their jobs because they will blame the injuries. Omar has given the team nothing in the minor leagues to work with to compensate for the injuries (not that they could have stayed afloat with ALL of the injuries, but still...there have been no decent additions to the roster to compensate).
I really liked Jerry when he first started but his decisions lately have been pretty mind boggling. If they field a healthy team in 2010 and fail to make the post-season, they will both be out. I'd love to just see them get some young guys, bring back Bobby V., and let him work with it and build it back...but I don't think that's gonna happen.

What a lost season.

Evil Vito 07-18-2009 12:23 PM

Oh yeah and by far the biggest change they need this offseason - Firing their entire medical staff. They have been a huge joke this year. Players have been injured and taken cortisone shots and played through it only to need to go on the DL (Putz). Jose Reyes was dragged around for two weeks, giving the team a 24 man roster before needing to get surgery anyway. Fernando Martinez was said to only have to miss one game, then ended up getting surgery. Carlos Beltran played through pain under the advice of team doctors and now has the slowest healing bone bruise of all time. This could only happen to the Mets.

Last time I checked it was Melky Cabrera.

SammyG 07-18-2009 07:02 PM

Dodgers losing 2 in a row is pretty unusual. Hopefully not three, after tonight

Evil Vito 07-19-2009 01:22 AM

Time for Johan to start his annual 2nd half domination.

I'm getting Extra Innings as a free trial right now. It's pretty grand

Evil Vito 07-19-2009 07:37 PM

Fernando Nieve stretchered off.

God hates the Mets.

Innovator 07-19-2009 07:47 PM

And you thought Wagner was taking his sweet time now, he'll go it more

Evil Vito 07-19-2009 07:51 PM

Actually, when Wagner first got hurt last September, he was expected to miss 12 months...meaning if he was gonna pitch it'd be in September 09 and if the Mets weren't this banged up and were right in the hunt, they probably wouldn't have played him.

But then in spring he made progress and he's hoping to be back mid-August. Not sure how much they'll use him, but he wants to pitch in 2010 since he didn't want his career to end this way...so he at least has some incentive. I'm sure a team will take a flyer on the guy next year.

But yeah...the Mets' DL has more talent on it right now than most teams have on their entire active rosters. :o

Sweet. 1 game out. Thank you, Dr. Halladay.

Yeah what makes that even worse is they only show 78 games per season out of 162, so it must have been much less in recent years before last year's A.L. pennant they won.

Droford 07-20-2009 02:08 PM

The Os got Cla Meredith from the Padres for Oscar Salazar, should help out the bullpen a decent amount and Salazar was doing nothing but rotting on the bench as an occasional PH.

The Pope 07-20-2009 03:25 PM

any Brewer fans? They just got the laziest defensive and laziest baserunning .300 hitting 2nd basemen Felipe Lopez from my sucky ass Diamondbacks... I'm happy he's gone

I know! With every passing game I love Halladay more and more. I don't know who's gonna get the privledge to get this guy from Toronto but whoever it is will be a pretty lucky SOB.

ClockShot 07-20-2009 09:25 PM

Wow. The Mets rejected a trade that could have gotten them Roy Halladay. All they had to do was give up Fernando Martinez, Bobby Parnell, Jon Niese and Ruben Tejada.

Hey Vito, I know your boys are hurting (no pun intended) right now, but would you go for it?

Are you serious? That's all it took and they rejected it? It's kinda hilarious that Halladay could have been gotten for that . When we would have had to pay Joba/Hughes +++.

Innovator 07-20-2009 09:55 PM

Honestly, I wouldn't. The Mets have barely any prospects to speak of as it is...they really can't afford to gut the system any more. If they were healthy and right in the hunt, I would make the deal with eyes on making the playoffs/WS this year and in 2010...but right now I can't in good conscience do it.

Hardkore Kidd J 07-21-2009 04:30 AM

Hmmmm.... I just heard that this was a fake rumor. Omar Minanya was on Wfan saying this offer was never made.

Everytime I write off Matsui is has a game winning home run and earns back his spot...mother fucker. He annoys me so much, but the dude wins games.

WHOO

ClockShot 07-22-2009 04:52 PM

The Brothers LaRoche are no longer together in Pittsburgh.

Red Sox aquire Adam LaRoche from the Pirates for Double-A shortstop Argenis Diaz and Class A right-hander Hunter Strickland, an 18th-round draft pick two years ago.

So I guees we can all say that the Pittsburgh Pirates is MLB's AAAA farm team. Since everybody seems to loot from them.

Todd Helton hit his 500th double and the winning home run today

Red Sox managed to trade Julio Lugo to the Cardinals for Chris Duncan.

Jesus. We take over 1st place in the AL East and in less than 24 hours they gotta go grab reinforcements and mount a counterattack.

I wonder if Theo is going a bit lulu up in Boston?

Jesus Shuttlesworth 07-22-2009 08:24 PM

Or he was DFA and they where going to lose him for nothing anyway

The big bad Yankees are in back the picture though, watch out!

Skippord 07-22-2009 08:54 PM

how the hell do you trade Chris Duncan for Julio Lugo

seems like a stupid trade

Gertner 07-22-2009 09:36 PM

Blue Jays have 4 hits tonight through 5 innnings. All for home runs.

Evil Vito 07-22-2009 10:43 PM

Mets drop 2 out of the 3 to the Nationals...

10 games out of the division now, and 6.5 out of the Wild Card going into the night, probably going to lose ground to some teams there too.

They are just gonna stand pat at the trade deadline, hope the injured guys can come back and rape, and spur them to a late surge like the Rockies in 2007. I'm not optimistic though.

If nothing comes of this season, it's gonna be time to just rebuild for 2010. It's become pretty clear that this core's chance to win it all was 2006.

Hardkore Kidd J 07-22-2009 11:30 PM

It was kinda amazing Chris Duncan went to the Red Sox for Julio Logo. Ever since Julio got DFA'D I was almost 100 percent positive he'd end up a Met.

SammyG 07-23-2009 03:07 PM

Manny Ramirez.

I'm sure if the Mets offered anything he could have. Red Sox where paying his full salary with or without a trade, so they basically just got a body for him. Duncan isn't even gonna be on the major league roster unless a few guys down with injuries.

lol @ Manny though, he couldn't play because of his hand then comes in and hits a grand slam on the first pitch
