Corporate CockSnogger 03-29-2022 05:37 AM

Rampage is usually very skippable and formulaic.

I was expecting this to happen when it started given it’s over-saturation from AEW, exactly what happened with WWE. Dynamite is usually really enjoyable 9 times out of 10. But 3 hours of wrestling per week is too much. I think 1 and a half hours is the sweet spot. I usually torrent dynamite so get it without adverts which usually comes in about an 1h45 mins which is okay.

Mr. Nerfect 03-29-2022 07:10 AM

Rampage always had that stink of Thunder. It is too much content. That detracts from everything you do. And the show is predictable and formulaic, as you said. Predictable doesn’t have to be bad, but when you’re advertising Bryan Danielson vs. Pineapple Pete or whatever, there is just no drama.

I love Rampage as a quick hit, fast forward the ad breaks, matches are normally pretty good and I watch it with one eye while I’m working on my laptop.

I wouldn’t mind the odd segment in it to change things up though. Although as a WCW watcher Thunder segments used to infuriate me because I didn’t get Thunder in NZ.

screech 03-31-2022 04:45 PM

I'm a fan of Rampage because weekly rasslin shows should be an hour. Just get right to the stuff.

IT does seem like AEW viewership has dipped since the WAR IN UKRAINE? Is it true, yes it is... possibly because AEW smart fans are watching MSNBC and CNN now? Think on it, and when you do go ahead and slap your money on the table because you can bank on it.

Sting Fan 04-08-2022 01:02 AM

Another strong number for Dynamite!

xrodmuc316 04-08-2022 01:50 AM

I wonder how Tony is going to spin losing 1/6th of his audience from last year next week. They have been eating off of that "look how we grew our audience from last year" after NXT moved for 52 weeks now. That is now over, CAN'T WAIT to hear how unopposed by NXT his awesome booking LOST 200,000 viewers from April 14th, 2021.

Agreed. Very embarrassing that a money mark nerd with Asperger’s books a better weekly wrestling show than Vince McMahon.

Bad News Gertner 04-09-2022 12:54 AM

Not true. Vince gets better ratings, therefore it's better.

#1-norm-fan 04-09-2022 10:06 AM

In all seriousness if ratings directly reflected quality, Raw would have somehow managed to hit 0 viewers at some point. It is shockingly bad television.

Bad News Gertner 04-09-2022 01:19 PM

That's just opinion. Ratings are facts. Therefore Raw and Smackdown are the two best wrestling shows on t.v.

#1-norm-fan 04-09-2022 01:28 PM

You’re forgetting the fact that my opinion matters 3 million times more than the goobers who watch and enjoy bad television.

#1-norm-fan 04-09-2022 01:30 PM

Guaranteed the majority of the audience who watches and enjoys Raw nowadays does so while eating TV dinners and boogers.

I only do one of those things.

XL 04-09-2022 02:15 PM

The thing is, independent studies have shown that most of Raw and SmackDown’s audience is bots.

Studies would suggest at the very least 25% of Raw and Smackdown's audience is also half of AEW's audience.

XL 04-09-2022 02:36 PM

Obviously that’s the 25% that are real (barely functioning) people.

But by default, everytime they complain about WWE Fans, do they not realize they are also mocking half of their own audience?

XL 04-09-2022 02:48 PM

Sorry again for my ignorance, but who’s complaining about the WWE fans?

Mr. Nerfect 04-09-2022 06:45 PM

AEW needs WWE so bad. They need its shadow to play in. They need something to throw rocks at. They need a culture to respond to. And if the WWE somehow gets better than it currently is, AEW is dead. It’s not notably different enough to thrive even now.

It's totally true. There are a lot of spineless people that love pro wrestling because it "kicks ass" and they don't. When I was at AEW live it was like being apart of a constant "wave" (like at a real sports event) But not a physical wave, a vocal one. Everyone wanting to become one voice to become one "character" affecting the show. Sure within that sea of voices you have a couple hundred frenzied fans who are able to steer the ship, but generally speaking it's kind of cult like to be apart of that.

It feels different at AEW than it was at ECW or WWE or TNA. It's a little more "soft" which I guess makes sense because our society is really fucking soft.

A lot of people with healthier relationships to it have been run off too. And I fully put myself in there too. I’m obsessed with wrestling. But the people who just want to watch a film without going into the DVD Extras or reading up about each actor’s entire personal life and just enjoy the content on that readily accessible level has been run off over the years. Now you go to shows with crowds that think they know.

Hmm...maybe it's like a comfort argument. Like how Walter Mathau and Jack Lemon sort of needed the other's antagonism in Grumpy Old Men.

Many things in life will change, but wrestling ratings-based arguments will always be here, arms wide open.

The ratings discussions are great. The Meltzer side take the numbers too literally, but it’s more interesting than the actual wrestling.

Ol Dirty Dastard 04-12-2022 10:05 PM

It really isn't great. I find wrestling fans like to talk about ratings to sound smart. Typically, it has the opposite effect. The fuck does it even matter? As long as my fave shows aren't getting canceled, I don't fucking care about the ratings.

Will never get why rasslin fans seem to care so much about ratings. If I enjoy the show, I'll watch. If I don't, I won't. I have no stake in "the numbers" (as I'm sure most fans do) so it's pointless to drone on about it.

Ol Dirty Dastard 04-13-2022 10:31 AM

I don't hate Meltzer because I appreciate his love of wrestling. But hearing him discuss ratings and demos literally saps all the life out of me. It honestly sounds like he does it to legitimize himself. And as we've discussed (and he's acknowledged), the promoters will use the ratings to tell whatever story they wish. It's basically "juking the stats."

He wants to add the "business" element to his journalistic pursuits. And much like wrestling fans, he just sounds like a blithering moron when he talks about the numbers. Moreover, just like the promoters, he uses them to tell the story he wants.

We'd all be better off looking at the numbers at a distance and talking about what's happening on-screen, as fans of most television do.

Television nerds definitely talk about how shows work. In a wrestling context, ratings have just been center of that discussion for so long due to Meltzer and the reporting on the Monday Night Wars. Wrestling fans are the only ones who seem to not understand that they don’t work as power levels. But again, that’s probably down to Meltzer.

Wrestling being a live form of entertainment fuels the discussion too. The goal is to draw crowds. Therefore people are going to talk about the crowds.

Okay…then don’t participate in ratings discussion? Some people do care about the numbers. If there’s no show for you to watch, there’s no show for you enjoy.

It’s a stat that doesn’t read well, sure. Put up against April-May 2021 it beats their rating 10 out of the next 13 weeks. I think this was the period they were moved for a few weeks, just makes the comparison difficult.

Neither the scope nor the growth of this company is impressive.

SmackDown: 2.142 million viewers

Rampage: 482k

AEW got less than a quarter of SmackDown’s audience.

AEW's growth is impressive, Tony is such a good booker!
