The system update is as slow as everybody says too...

Maybe the Wii U was shipped seperately from the game with the idea being Amazon are supposed to place them in the packs themselves? No idea how it works.

The slow update can be done in the background if you decline the update or something weird. You decline but it still updates as you do other stuff. Cant remember the exact details. It's online, somewhere. Kotaku, probably.

#BROKEN Hasney 11-29-2012 04:12 PM

No point without the update though. I have no games until I get on the eShop.

#BROKEN Hasney 11-29-2012 05:19 PM

My Mii is dancing on the screen like a pillock as I use the browser.

He's in the bottom corner of the gamepad too.

#BROKEN Hasney 11-29-2012 05:23 PM

Oh, the bottom left pillock is for bookmarks. The dancing Mii vanishes if you go TV Screen browsing.

HTML5 video sites are teriffic. You can send the video to the tv and carry on browsing on the pad.

Nintendo want £50 per digital game.

Wow.

#BROKEN Hasney 11-30-2012 03:49 AM

Finally, some good news:

Was in GAME this morning before work, bought Smash Bros Brawl (Because it's Smash Bros AND because it enables Wii mode homebrew) and after talking some about how I had the Wii U and nothing to play on it yet because of the Nintendo Land farce, the manager let me have Tekken Tag Tournament 2 for £25. It's £25 when bought with a console usually or £45 normally, so happy with that.

Drakul 11-30-2012 07:56 AM

Wii U just arrived and everything is there, including Nintendoland.

There does seem to be an odd rattle to the gamepad, though. I thought it was the stylus so I took it out and it still rattled. I held down buttons and it still rattles. Not sure if it's supposed to.

Drakul 11-30-2012 09:11 AM

Just found out what the rattling was. The speaker on the right side of the pad has just gone. If I rattle it, it comes back for a second but its gone again. Not sure if I contact Amazon or Nintendo about it. I'm thinking Amazon.

#BROKEN Hasney 11-30-2012 09:14 AM

I'd say Amazon in the first instance, because it was probably damaged in transit. Was going to say I didn't remember mine rattling last night, but as I don't have it to hand in work...

Drakul 11-30-2012 09:20 AM

I went to Amazon and the FAQ said to contact the manufacturer, so that's what I did.

The Wii U takes a while to set up. I can't seem to get it to connect to the internet, even though the Wii has no problem with it wirelessly. Also not sure how to stop "overscanning", I think it's called when the tv cuts off the end of the image. It's just the edge, but it still cuts off half of the button in the bottom right of the main menu screen.

#BROKEN Hasney 11-30-2012 09:22 AM

You can't stop overscanning if your TV doesn't support it. There's not an option in the Wii. Mine does it too.

Nintendo are still "investigating" getting my Wii VC purchases back. They're not quick.

The Rogerer 11-30-2012 10:16 AM

Everyone is just acting like overscanning is this normal thing. I've never heard anyone talk about it as a problem before the Wii U, unless you're connecting a PC through DVI to some weird cheap TV or something.

My old 40" Smasung overscans everything through HDMI and it's a pain in the arse. You can't fix it via TV settings.

360 and PS3 can correct this via settings although it wasn't present in the 360 at launch (which isn't surprising, it doesn't seem to be an issue via component and HDMI wasn't available at launch).

Drakul 11-30-2012 10:41 AM

It's an issue for me with the Wii U and the 360. Wii U is much worse, though. It's down to me using an old school tv. If I hadn't gotten a Wii U, I could have caught up with everyone else and gotten an HDTV. Wishing I had.

Feeling let down by the Wii U right now, to be honest. It wont detect a wi-fi connection, even though there is one, the overscan is bad enough that, playing Balloon Fight Breeze, I can actually fly right off the screen, my pad speaker broke and Nintendoland is actually pretty crappy in general. Using the stylus for the Yoshi game, it feels weird, as if I'm scratching the screen too hard, when I'm really not putting much force on the screen at all. Holding the pad like an iPad and using it as a steering wheel feels awkward.
I'm also finding it a bit hard to go between the TV and the gamepad. I instinctively want to look at the pad the entire time because that's where the controls are and my brain tells me "Screen and controls in your hand = handheld = look at that screen the entire time."

Massive Nintendo fan and even I feel blah about the console right now. I wasn't expecting to be in tears of joy or anything but I did expect to enjoy myself.

#BROKEN Hasney 11-30-2012 10:45 AM

I enjoyed myself just on the web browser.

Cannot wait for tonight now. Play some Tekken, think I should go warm up in bed so I should stop playing... BUT I DON'T HAVE TO! BAM, it's in my hands while I lie down too.

Bored of playing games now though... KERPOW, TV remote and YouTube where I navigate the sky guide or choose between watching YouTube videos on the pad or TV.

All while NSMBU downloads in the background. Then it all begins again.

#BROKEN Hasney 11-30-2012 10:46 AM

Could never see me being a massive fan of Nintendo Land to be honest. Might get rid while it has some trade-in value and get one of the sexy headsets I saw in GAME this morning.

#BROKEN Hasney 11-30-2012 01:20 PM

Alright, being able to go to the eShop, buy and start downloading Mario, then Miiverse and finally the web browser to post this all while Tekken is pause is nothing short of brilliant.

Drakul 11-30-2012 03:02 PM

Still can't get it to find a wi-fi spot, even right next to the router thing. I can't remember security password exactly but I must be putting it in right because it goes to the connection test yet it still fails to find anything. Anyone know if there is a default password like 0000 or 1234 that wi-fi things all have?

#BROKEN Hasney 11-30-2012 03:18 PM

Amazon just sent me a download code for Nintendo Land from the eShop. Bit disappointed as I wanted to trade it when I was done, but the faster load times will be nice.

#BROKEN Hasney 11-30-2012 04:29 PM

How the fuck does Mario take 15 mins to install after the download? Seems stupidly inefficient.

The Rogerer 11-30-2012 04:40 PM

Boss of Nintendo, Satoru Iwata, apologizes for all the issues people are having with the system's launch with the initial patch difficulties as the main source for the apology.

The scanning and NFC features which was teased as a potential gameplay feature for Rayman Legends may not end up being in the final version. Ubisoft is having some difficulties getting it finished beyond the "prototype" stage.

Love Miiverse so much. On Mario, it's like "You achieved something great on that level. Would you like to draw a commemorative picture as you brag to the internet?"

Fuck I wish I could draw.

Drakul 12-01-2012 03:45 AM

Ok, I managed to get the Wii U to connect to my wireless connection but now it can't connect to the internet. The Wii can do it, the upstairs PC can do. Any help at all? I even have the Wii U right next to where the wireless connection is coming from.

#BROKEN Hasney 12-01-2012 04:11 AM

Who setup your Wii? I can't imagine the settings being different. I'd go to your Wii settings and copy them to your Wii U exactly.

Have you done the Wii to Wii U transfer? Not sure if that transfers settings like wireless.

OssMan 12-01-2012 04:15 AM

If I get the Wii U there's no way I'm transferring all my data from the Wii to it

forget that

#BROKEN Hasney 12-01-2012 04:17 AM

Try this Drakul. Wish I could help more, but there's not a lot of help out there yet with it being so new and I didn't have any issues connecting to my router or using my phone as a router.

I'm doing it, then I get my Wii games in upscaled HD and use my Wii as a GameCube. Good times.

I set up the Wii myself. I have already done the thing you linked me to, this morning and it got the Wii U connected to the wireless signal but then the wireless signal wont get an internet connection. It's not that the router isnt working or anything.

I need an internet connection to get the update to transfer my Wii stuff.

#BROKEN Hasney 12-01-2012 06:42 AM

Turn the firewall off the router and see if that works. If it does, either leave it disabled (your PC should have it's own firewalls anyway) or add the Wii U to the DMZ.

Purgatory 12-01-2012 08:11 AM

try www.routerlogin.net. use 'admin' and 'password' to login, if that's the correct way to do it. I have a Netgear router and that's the site I use to play with the settings.

Purgatory 12-01-2012 08:13 AM

the password will be under "Wireless Settings"

Drakul 12-01-2012 03:21 PM

My router is weird. I can't access any kind of control panel for some reason, probably the way someone installed it. So I can't edit any settings.

That site you linked me to, Purgatory, doesn't seem to exsist.

Purgatory 12-01-2012 11:10 PM

works for me, though. What kind of router is it?

Purgatory 12-01-2012 11:17 PM

another idea. In your browser, type in http://000.000.000.000, except type in your IP address instead of the zeros. This was how I had to do it when I was using the Netgear router that my ISP gave me.

#BROKEN Hasney 12-02-2012 01:14 AM

Functionality wise, I am in love with the console.

I went to bed playing Tekken and I woke up feeling pretty ill. The gamepad was next to my bed though so I booted up Nintendo Land and played some crash course, checked up on some Miiverse things and then finally New Super Mario, all without turning on the TV.

Miiverse is fucking addictive. I was shocked.

#BROKEN Hasney 12-02-2012 01:18 AM

I'll go as far to say that as long as it continues to get good ports, I'll take the Wii U version of a game above any other format if it is completely playable on the gamepad.

I tried that before and all I get is "Bing cannot find this site" or something.
I use TP-Link for my wirelessness.

I feel like I got your Wii U launch period and you got mine.

Drakul 12-02-2012 04:25 AM

This is what I use for wireless internet.

I can get the Wii U to connect to that but that wont then connect to the internet through the Wii U. Upstairs PC etc still all get internet through it.

#BROKEN Hasney 12-02-2012 05:15 AM

Nah, that's the wireless adaptor that plugs into your PC, surely.

Drakul 12-02-2012 05:23 AM

It is. The actual thing has TL-WR641G on it.

I'm totally clueless with anything remotely technical when it comes to PCs.

Purgatory 12-02-2012 05:16 PM

http://192.168.1.1 type this into your browser (Internet Explorer or Firefox). Then a prompt will come up asking you to enter the login and password.

This is right from the manual for the TP Link TL-WR641G.

Purgatory 12-02-2012 05:17 PM

or just click on it.

"This forum requires that you wait 20 seconds between posts. Please try again in 2 seconds. Spilchuk is a shithead"

LOL

Drakul 12-03-2012 01:46 AM

When I was typing it in, it didn't work but it works when I click the link. Now I just need to find the username. It was set up by someone else about 2 or 3 years ago. Thanks, though.

Purgatory 12-03-2012 05:19 AM

Ok, we got ya that far. Now, try "admin" for the username and "password" for the password. Those are the default and I don't know if those can be changed. I know I didn't change mine. If your ISP set it up for you, they wouldn't have changed it without your permission. Try it out and we'll go from there.

#BROKEN Hasney 12-03-2012 05:28 AM

Apparently, the default for these routers is admin for the username and admin for the password too.

#BROKEN Hasney 12-03-2012 05:49 AM

Going to go all digital where I can on this. Just having all your games selectable from the pad when you're in another room without fannying around with discs is worth the extra premium.

Nintendo's site lists a Buffalo and a Toshiba drive as "recommended" and they're pretty cheap actually. Going with the Buffalo. Was only going to get a 1TB but it's only £20 for 2Tb so may as well partake.

Yeah this one usually works, and it is typically no username and admin as the password. Usually default passwords are always a combination of admin and password in some kind of arrangement.

Also, find the reset button on your router and hold it down for like 30 seconds; this should cause a factory reset on the router in the event the password has been changed for some reason.

Also, in the rare event that 192.168.1.1 does not do anything for you, try 10.0.0.1. Some routers, especially ones given out by ISPs, will use that address for access instead. Happens alot with comcast equipment.

Purgatory 12-03-2012 05:28 PM

comcast, I tell ya...Had to deal with their equipment while visiting my family in Burlington, Mass

"oh sweet new posts in the Wii U thread...oh it's just posts about getting online still"

good luck though.

Drakul 12-04-2012 03:32 AM

I think I'm going to have to do a "hard reset" of the TP-Link. I've asked everyone that could have possibly set up the thing for me and no one remembers the user name and any possibly default username doesn't work.
Only problem is my brother, who is living with me for now, doesn't want me to reset it because he'll have to set stuff up for his PC again.

The site says to back up the settings before reseting but I think I need to get into the thing to do that, which I can't do until I reset it. Nothing but the Wii U has been this difficult to get online. Wii, 360, DS, PC.

Feel like I'm missing out on the best stuff of the Wii U until I get it online :(.

Really and truly, all your brother will have to do is change his password to access the wifi to whatever the new setting is after you update it....in all actuality, this will have to be done for every device connected wirelessly on your network. I've done it, it's not that bad.

Sold over 400k in the US so far but only 40k in the UK launch weekend.

There are stock shortages, but they're being replenished through the week. Not sure if that UK number is the best Nintendo could hope for with the stock, or utterly shit.

The GAME in Dundee seems to have a lot in stock. Saw one guy walking down the street with one but, walking past GAME, they had a few stacked up for people to buy and likely more in the back.

#BROKEN Hasney 12-04-2012 07:55 AM

They've been restocked a couple of times already, suggestion it would be an artificial shortage anyway. Those numbers are for the weekend only.

They're back in on Amazon now too after selling out there.

Drakul 12-04-2012 08:33 AM

I do think Wii U will have a hard time matching Wii for popularity. The U makes it seem like a remodel or something, like DSi or PSX.

For the sake of non-gamers, they really should have given it a whole new name or gone with Wii 2 or Super Wii with a colour scheme based on the SNES or something that clearly signalled it was a whole new thing.

#BROKEN Hasney 12-04-2012 10:06 AM

There's another Nintendo Direct happening tomorrow at 12pm EST with some Wii U and 3DS news.

Drakul 12-04-2012 02:11 PM

Finally got the Wii U online and it's currently updating.

#BROKEN Hasney 12-04-2012 02:13 PM

Sweet. Grab some popcorn and wait an hour.

Drakul 12-04-2012 02:18 PM

Hoping it doesn't freeze and need replacing. I hear that's a "thing" with the Wii U and this update.

Drakul 12-04-2012 03:38 PM

Stiiiiiiill updating. Thinking it's stuck at 85%.

My internet isn't lightning fast but it's not slow, either. Still takes a while to update.

Drakul 12-04-2012 04:17 PM

Yeah, either stick scrolls in Miiverse. It's all good.

Drakul 12-04-2012 05:16 PM

Realised I can scroll with the stylus anyway, so no need for sticks.

Miiverse is cool. Following 4 people I enjoy from YouTube on Miiverse, Twitter style, but only one of them seems to actually be using Miiverse.

Did a search for "Hasney" because that's the only name I knew would be there from TPWW. What was the post you made that was removed?

Emperor Smeat 12-04-2012 05:29 PM

According to Nintendo, all Wii U units released by Spring 2013 will no longer have to deal with the mandatory firmware patch since it will be built-in by then.

Only reason it was huge to begin with was Nintendo unable to get everything done in time but wasn't severe enough to delay the launch itself.

Looks pretty hot too. Can't wait.

Pikmin 3 being shown, but only with a date of "Spring". GAH.

So pretty though. May be the prettiest game I've ever seen.

EDIT: Those dark levels with the glowing mushrooms and the fire effects... Holy crap. Not sure if it's the Wii U being more powerful or just Nintendos art direction.

Never heard of anyone playing Dragon Quest game

Does anyone care about Ninja Gaiden 3 Razor's Edge

I want Dragon Quest. Ended up loving DQIX on the DS.

Fuck Ninja Gaiden though.

I got modded on Miiverse for no reason.

I made a post a day or so ago asking if people blew or pressed X in DKCC to move the fan platforms, with a little doodle of a fan platform.
The only replies I got were from people that pressed X, so I wrote "Does anyone blow?" with a doodle of a guys head blowing wind out his mouth. That somehow got modded.

I disputed the modding and they "reviewed it" but said it was a violation of the code of conduct. Made a wordy post instead.

I need to check this out in the UK (Drak, if you're at home, please check this), but apparently in Europe, you cannot buy 18 rated content from the eShop apart from in the hours 11pm - 4am.

What in the absolute fuck?

The Rogerer 12-07-2012 04:39 AM

Surely not

I tried it for you. I went to the eShop and tried to purchase ZombiU which is an 18 and got an error page and taken to the Wii U main menu. I then tried to purchase NSMBU which is a 3+ and it took me to a payment confirmation page, which I then backed out of. So, yeah, no buying 18 games during the day.

It happens in Germany where some batshit insane law exists that they have to do this, but I've seen an Italian, a Spaniard complain and someone from Luxembourg (Luxembourgian? Chrome thinks it's a word anyway) too.

Probably a Europe wide thing because of Germany. The same way the PAL version of No Mercy had no blood just because Germany didn't allow it.

lo fucking l.

Yeah, this seems to happen for everyone. No warning about why the error occurs or anything and the only way we know about this restriction is because someone emailed Nintendo Italy.

According to Wikipedia, "Luxembourger" is the official demonym, but "Luxembourgian" and "Luxembourgish" are also used.

So, a kid can access "mature" content just by staying up late? How is this supposed to do anything?
