'Member when they tried to get people behind The Ryback again by having him come out and do a promo about The Secret?

XL 06-01-2020 09:29 AM

That was his idea, I think.

#1-norm-fan 06-01-2020 09:40 AM

‘Member when they turned him face again and made him a focal point of the build to Survivor Series by having him turn on The Authority and join Team Cena... only to have him be the first elimination.

#1-norm-fan 06-01-2020 09:40 AM

The damage had already been done long ago. But still. Such a fucking waste.

Evil Vito 06-01-2020 10:20 AM

In an alternate universe, The Ryback is a multi-time World Heavyweight Champion and future Hall of Famer.

Evil Vito 06-01-2020 10:26 AM

Remember when they brought Goldberg back basically as soon as they let Ryback go? Ugh.

Lol Ryback leaving is what caused me to stop watching current watching and start watching old stuff. I was so mad when he lost to fucking Mark Henry at Wrestlemania.

Evil Vito 06-01-2020 10:44 AM

lol I was at that Mania and everyone in the crowd were absolutely baffled at Henry going over

Big Show 100% should've been WHW champion going into Mania and Ryback could've Shell Shocked him to win the belt.

Evil Vito 06-01-2020 10:49 AM

In hindsight it shouldn’t have been that big of a surprise. It’s been a trend in the last decade or so to make sure everybody loses their first Mania match and I think it’s by design to make The Streak look even more impressive over time.

Bad News Gertner 06-01-2020 11:29 AM

He had lost every PPV match building up to that match. Icing on the horseshit cake.

Bad News Gertner 06-01-2020 11:36 AM

Started with HIAC

Lost to CM Punk

Lost to CM Punk and Cena in a Triple Threat match at Survivor Series

Lost to the Shield at TLC

Made it to the end at the Royal Rumble, eliminated by Cena

Lost at EC to the Shield

Lost to Mark Henry in the 3rd match at WrestleMania

Turned heel

No Contest with Cena at Extreme Rules

Lost vs Cena at Payback

Finally won at MITB against Jericho

and that's how they completely killed Ryback dead

People can say what they want about Ryback, but there's no question that he was over and the company did little to capitalize

And then they gave him the title shot program against Cena the next night

Bad News Gertner 06-01-2020 12:08 PM

Lol like how does that make sense.

#1-norm-fan 06-01-2020 01:42 PM

That ending of Raw where CM Punk attacked Mick Foley backstage and then looked up in horror before the camera showed Ryback standing there...

And then when he finally got his hands on Punk and the crowd went fucking attitude era-level bezerk.

They built him up perfectly and got the exact reaction they wanted. It’s insane that they didn’t follow up on it.

Par for the course. They rarely capitalize on people getting over. Based on what we heard from Arn Anderson, most of the time it's intentional and Ryback may have been a victim of that.

From a ruthless business perspective, it makes sense. Why risk creating another Austin or Rock that becomes bigger than the WWE and harder and more costly to control, when you're already making the highest profits the company has ever seen? You don't need that big crossover star.

Sure sucks for the fans though.

Nailed it!

I’d forgotten about that Mark Henry vs Ryback match at Mania. Has to be up there on the list of “Wrong Guy Went Over”.

Right, but you have to understand you’re still making the money you’re making BECAUSE of the stars that have been made. Hogan, Austin, Rock and even Cena are indirectly responsible for the money WWE has been making over recent years. It sure as fuck isn’t Seth Rollins or Roman Reigns or Drew McIntyre.

The smart thing to do is to just keep finding and building stars. If they become “too big” for wrestling, cool. You’ve just infiltrated the mainstream with another guy you can bring back once in a while as a special attraction. Maybe eventually you’ll have enough of those guys and you won’t have to get non-wrestlers like Gronk to come in because you’ve spent years killing your mainstream appeal.

I’m gonna go ahead and just make the claim.

It’s #1. Fight me.

Bad News Gertner 06-01-2020 09:00 PM

And another thing! Why the fuck did they take Percy Watson's gimmick from him when he came back to NXT!!!!!

Don't forget, not only did he job to Henry, that was the Mania Jericho wanted to work with, and put Ryback over. He went from beating Jericho at Mania, to losing to Mark Henry.

At least Vince got what he wanted, Fandango got to win his Mania debut lol.

See my previous post. Vince made some good money on his theme music though

#1-norm-fan 06-01-2020 10:00 PM

Fandango absolutely should have beaten Jericho and it should have been the start of a huge push. Fandango is a great athlete, good in the ring, looks like a movie star and is insanely charismatic. Him and Ryback are my 1 & 2 on the list of WWE’s recent dropped balls.

Fair, at the time Ryback losing was more baffling. That said, hindsight says it's crazy that an all time great like Jericho took a loss at the biggest show to Fandango.

At least Mark Henry is a former World Champ and Hall of Famer.

Evil Vito 06-02-2020 08:19 AM

Fandango should've never been Fandango because Johnny Curtis should've been given a push well before that.

Evil Vito 06-02-2020 08:34 AM

Johnny Curtis' real breakout was when NXT Redemption abandoned the game show format and just embraced that it was Superstars with storylines. Basically everyone that couldn't get booked on Raw or SmackDown was doing fun stuff on NXT.

Lock Jaw 06-02-2020 09:12 AM

Yeah, Johnny Curtis and Maxine coulda been huge

XL 06-02-2020 03:51 PM

I think we’re in the timeline where we never get Johnny Curtis bonafide superstar. #DarkestTimeline
