Saw it a couple nights ago. Loved it.

Jeritron 05-07-2009 10:02 PM

Just saw it. Loved it.

mitchables 05-08-2009 01:00 AM

I thought the cast were perfect. Chris Pine fucking owned that role, and other than Zachary Quinto, probably had the biggest legacy to live up to.

Karl Urban and Simon Pegg were both magnificent.

Jeritron 05-08-2009 01:26 AM

I basically loved everything about it except for two brief parts I thought the movie was above

mitchables 05-08-2009 11:46 AM

Which were?

#BROKEN Hasney 05-08-2009 12:12 PM

I fucking hate Star Trek, utterly despise it.

Until this afternoon. My boss is a major Trekkie and let us out early if we went to Star Trek with him and he'd pay so I thought AT WORST I could piss about with my phone.

Loved pretty much every second. Casting and pacing were perfect. Defo gonna get it on Blu-Ray when it's out.

SPOILER: show
1. the use of Beastie Boys. I love the Beastie Boys, but it just kinda seemed hokey to use modern music in a space epic. I'm glad it was the only instance.
2. The puffy hands. I enjoyed that whole sequence, and thought it was fun. I liked the idea of him being snuck aboard with a sickness. I just thought they looked/seemed like something from a kid's comedy or Will Smith in Hitch.

But those were literally a matter of seconds. They really aren't complaints, rather than things I rolled my eyes at.
Other than that it was an incredibly good movie.

Jeritron 05-08-2009 02:55 PM

Casting was indeed amazing.

Spock was incredible. I knew he looked the part but I couldn't believe how well he played it.

Captain Kirk was the man. I was shocked by how good an actor he was.

Tb1 05-08-2009 03:14 PM

Yeah, I can't say enough good things. Absolutely amazing. It hurts a bit to say this, but better than both FC and WOK.

Jeritron 05-08-2009 03:31 PM

I have the urge to check out some Star Trek movies now. I have seen a few over the course of my life, but never sat down and really properly watched any.

Tb1 05-08-2009 03:50 PM

Watch Wrath of Khan. As I told my friend last night who had never seen Star Trek, if you watch an older movie you will likely be disappointed. Not because they're bad movies, but because they are very different from this one.

Jeritron 05-08-2009 03:58 PM

I appreciate good movies of all shapes and sizes though. I'm not just looking for action and adrenaline. If it's good I'll like it.

I enjoyed the action in the new one, but characters and dialogue are what makes a movie for me.

Mooияakeя™ 05-08-2009 04:01 PM

I agree with TB1. I think due to the 'failure' of Enterprise, the studio are completely starting again. They know they have a damn powerful franchise, but needed it to reach more mainstream audience. This new film by far has done it.

If people gave up the stereotype "geek" thing with Star Trek and just watch it. They will find it's humorous, intelligent, developed, interesting and above all entertaining. It's not at all difficult to follow. it's a well known fact that treknobabble is just made up anyway to make it sound advanced. ( http://hyotynen.kapsi.fi/trekfailure )

I know I'm not going to fly across galaxies, so this is my way of living it out and I think Star Trek is an awesome outlet for the minds more adventurous side, in a TV sense anyway (compared to Sunset Beach et al).

Check these out...

Star Trek II: Wrath of Khan
Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country
Star Trek: First Contact

Lock Jaw 05-08-2009 04:20 PM

I like Star Trek II, III, IV, and VI. Don't bother with the first one or the fifth one.

Of the TNG movies, I'd only recommend Generations and First Contact.

Mooияakeя™ 05-08-2009 04:36 PM

I'd like to urge people to watch a few TNG episodes called:

The Inner Light
The Best of Both Worlds (2 parter)
The Measure of a Man

All are beautifully written, excellently executed and in some parts deal with many issues and questions in life. They're masterpieces in TV, not just Star Trek.

Jeritron 05-08-2009 04:47 PM

Seems like this movie is doing wonders for the awareness and appreciaton of Star Trek movies/episodes.

I can testify personally, that I have always been very aware of the Star Trek movies (I know all the names and stuff), but I've never followed it or been interested.
This new movie was the first time I've ever been interested in Trek, let alone pumped.
So yea, definitely going to try to watch some of the good stuff.

I hope they make more sequels with this cast and JJ Abrams.

As I said earlier, they're defo signed on for 2 more. Writing the script for ST12 started in March 2009 and it's around summer 2011 when it'll come out. If all goes to plan etc. etc. J.J. Abrams and Bryan Burk will produce, but Abrams hasn't signed on to direct it. Yet anyway.

If it's as good as everyone (can't believe I'm writing that word here) is saying, then lets hope! I won't see the film till Weds next week at earliest so can't comment yet.

Nowhere Man 05-08-2009 10:50 PM

Just got back from the movie, and enjoyed the hell out of it. Though I couldn't help but notice something eerily familiar about the plot structure...

A ruthless villain with an unstoppable planet-destroying superweapon? A troubled farm-boy who never knew his heroic father? A mysterious old hermit letting said farm-boy in on a secret that will be his call to greatness?

So that's how they made Star Trek a blockbuster again--they pulled the plot from the first Star Wars! :p

Seriously, though, it's a damn fun movie. Great cast, phenomenal effects, and writing that doesn't suck, so thumbs up.

Triple Naitch 05-08-2009 11:16 PM

Prob going to see it on Sunday. Not Trek fan at all. I've never even seen an episode or movie, but this looks good.

These are just the plot points of "The Hero's Journey." You also forgot the "Belly of the Beast" moment, which was his adventure with Chickenasaurus Rex on that ice planet.

You can find the same plot points in many, many movies, including Lord of the Rings and Batman.

As am amateur filmmaker myself, I wanted to see if anyone else noticed JJ Abrams' use of lens flares throughout the film (when the camera turns and you can see the light spectral circles of the lenses). There were more lens flares in this film than perhaps I have ever seen in a 2 hour film, and they almost became a part of the storytelling in the way they were used.

Amazing movie. Gearing up to go see it again here in a few minutes.

Great episodes. I'd also suggest "The Drumhead".

Nice reccomendations. Those are pretty much what I've always heard are "the good ones"

I watched First Contact tonight and enjoyed it quite a bit, even though I was playing catch up for the first half hour or so. Pretty awesome once it clicked though.

I'm going to try to get my hands on the other two this week.

D Mac 05-10-2009 05:20 PM

All I can say is Awesome. I'll be pre ordering this on Blu Ray disc for sure.

There is a quip amongst trekkies that the even ones are the good ones and the odd ones are the shit ones. I think that's the right way around anyway. Of course it's not extended to all films, but just a general joke.

KYR 05-10-2009 07:19 PM

Saw it yesterday and loved it.

Only have two criticisms...

SPOILER: show
  1. I thought the Bridge 'looked' too Hi-Tech and too 'Sterile-White' when taken into context with the Original Series.
  2. I didn't like the romantic side-line story between Spock and Uhura - didn't click with me as being 'in character' for Spock.

D Mac 05-10-2009 08:31 PM

Did anyone stay after the credits? Was there anything after them?

Theo Dious 05-10-2009 08:45 PM

Yeah, William Shatner comes on and sings a song. ................................................ :shifty:

KYR 05-10-2009 09:47 PM

Rocket Man?

Haze 05-10-2009 10:08 PM

saw it, loved it, can't wait for the next one.

Boondock Saint 05-10-2009 10:57 PM

Just got back. Very good. Might be my favorite Trek, actually.

Tb1 05-10-2009 11:01 PM

Going to see it for the 4th time tonight. :shifty:

Saw it last night, really good movie. But one problem. Tyler Perry? Is that really necessary?
