475k for Rampage. Glad to see people tuned in for the CM Punk announcement and what MJF would do next.

But yes, 1.48 million — a whole million more than this — is a record low.

Not at all, but noting a record low for their product is something "to note" to those who care

Also of note would be if they were to set all time highs.

939,000 for Dynamite.
|
It’s lower? But how? They shot that hot angle last week. At least it isn’t in as bad shape as Raw.
|
I thought for sure the return of megastar cultural icon Wheeler Yuta's return woukd have pulled in at least 14 million, what happened?

Maybe Vince paid another $3 million to Neilson to have AEW's numbers lowered

I think, realistically, to judge this cross-promotion, you’ve got to wait until the numbers are doing what I want them to do.
|
This was a special episode too, wasn’t it?

Oof.
What were they up against this week? |

Tony Khan does have a lot in common with the Desperate Housewives, beyond leading with their emotions. They’re at the same level as bookers and none of them can properly blink their eyes.

Tony has alot in common with the Real Housewives actually. They all like to spend other people's money.

331,000 for Rampage

This crossover thing has not been working for AEW. I don’t know if it’s helping New Japan any. It didn’t help Impact. But this is hurting AEW even if you considered their meek numbers impressive for whatever reason. The handling of Punk’s injury versus the handling of Cody’s is also very exposing. Bryan has been off. The risky thing with bringing in stars, even if you misuse them, is that fans get used to them and miss them when they’re gone. I don’t think anyone could argue that the product is getting either hotter or better. |

the show oversaturated itself. the roster doesnt have the depth for 2 shows and neither does the booker

To be fair, Vince hit-shotted himself on to TV, might have been almost 2 hours before Rampage started but the TV audience was clearly spent after that emotional and impassioned speech. Can’t blame them for not being able to catch a third hour of wrestling on the night.
|
AEW is the premier brand of wrestling in the world. It’s the hot thing no matter how popular it is.
|
AEW is like your art house/independent movies; objectively great, critically acclaimed, unable to break through commercially.
|
WWE is like your Michael Bay movies; style over substance but will make bank.
|
Lol, nice try.
AEW is like Battlefield Earth. |
The latest thing is for AEW fans to defend the lack of depth to the New Japan crossover with telling people to Google someone if they don’t understand them or their motivations. I don’t think they understand that this sort of dense presentation hurts the accessibility of the product though — which is part of what you’re seeing impact the ratings. They’re labelling the fans who don’t bite into this product with a lack of story as “casuals” and CM Punk has given them permission to say that casuals don’t exist and aren’t desirable.
You have AEW defenders literally saying things like “Fuck the casuals.” It’s insane levels of gatekeeping and a great way to be left with a base that isn’t going to be able to justify your product having a platform. Hardcore AEW fanboys are increasingly leaning on metrics they think make them look good — for example, ticket sales for shows like Forbidden Door. The evidence definitely suggests that these shows are scooped up by scalpers and possibly AEW themselves and the sellout doesn’t measure genuine interest. Forbidden Door tickets are listed on the secondary market for as little as $15. |

1.95 million for the 20 year Cena celebration ep of RAW

It mustn’t have been mentioned in here. Makes sense that people only want to talk about WWE’s “low numbers” versus AEW’s greatest achievements. Holy shit at WWE getting back to 2 million for Raw. Meanwhile AEW struggles to reach 900k without a third hour.
|
It wasn’t mentioned here so you just assumed it was up 300k?
Is that what was reported on the smart people forum? |
Quote:
It’s their 4th best rating of the year (albeit not quite 2 million). Wait til Dynamite gets that third hour! 3 mil a week guaranteed. |
Quote:
I wonder just how disastrous a third hour would be for Dynamite? I kind of facetiously point out that Rampage is in that third hour slot, but it’s on a different night. A third hour with Dynamite as its own lead-in would be interesting to see. On one hand, they’ve got that hardcore audience that could will themselves through. But on the other hand — let’s be honest, it’s death. |
Back over a million post NJPW
<blockquote class="twitter-tweet"><p lang="en" dir="ltr">AEW Dynamite on TBS last night:<br>1,023,000 viewers<br>P18-49 rating: 0.36<br><br> <a href="https://t.co/1SscdBCpr8">https://t.co/1SscdBCpr8</a> <a href="https://t.co/iw5oD0FSJF">pic.twitter.com/iw5oD0FSJF</a></p>— Brandon Thurston (@BrandonThurston) <a href="https://twitter.com/BrandonThurston/status/1542601639206469639?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw">June 30, 2022</a></blockquote> <script async src="https://platform.twitter.com/widgets.js" charset="utf-8"></script> |
I’m genuinely surprised they managed to get over that magic 1 million number. I mean, it’s a pitiful number in context, but a boost is a boost, right? Onwards and upwards for the most popular wrestling in the world!
|
Makes sense. The build to forbidden door stunk and they didn’t get the biggest name till the go home show.
|
Ugh, the coverage is irritating. You’ve got Thurston pointing out that they were #1 in 18-49 for original programming according to Showbuzz. This ignores a whole bunch of stuff on cable, like The Big Bang Theory before it, which destroys it. But he has to go further than that and group it in with network television, and point out that it was #6 if you count that. So it basically got beaten by NBC, ABC, CBS and FOX? Why smudge that in there? So much effort to make something unimpressive sound impressive. I’m glad more and more people are starting to see through this shit.

Hey man I'd recommend you watch a 3 hour episode of WWE raw if you like to see very safe matches with absolutely no blading and very few bumps!
|
Don’t forget about watching the same guys wrestle each other every week and trading wins!
|
theres an art to putting on a compelling matches with minimal bumps. i dont concede that the greater the bump count the better the match. if thats true then the bucks should be drawing trillions
|
Yeah that rating has nothing to do with NJPW and everything to do with the B&G match, which isn’t sustainable. Whether they did a good enough job with the show to get people to come back next week will be interesting but I’d expect them to be back below the million next Wednesday.
Probably a similar story for Raw. A boost from everything going on with McMahon (was his appearance announced?) and from Cena’s rerun but I’d be surprised if they deliver 1.9m next week, though it is MITB this weekend so if they deliver something compelling off the back of that, maybe. |

Predictably, AEW is back under 1 million.

Haven’t even seen the rating but the fact that Noid didn’t bother to mention it and could only spin it as “back under a million” makes me think it was actually a pretty small drop from Blood and Guts.

AEW got fewer viewers than a hot dog eating contest on at 4 in the afternoon. |
To be fair to AEW though, the hot dog eating contest was only an hour. Ratings may have dropped if it had gone into the second hour with an extra sauerkraut round.
