The Rogerer 02-24-2016 05:39 AM

I heard it was impossible to be attracted to unreal women.

Week One Field Report:

This is the most I've ever grown in Street Fighter. I've now Dunning Krugered my way to know I've only started.

COMBOS
"What's a combo?" Me before last week. I knew what combos where, but never really thought to apply them. Time in training mode with Dummy set to 'Block after first attack' is all I needed to get started. Went on with Chun Li

I originally started with stuff like cr.lk,st.lp just to get the rhythm of combos.
Early on I discovered cr.mk, legs
and then realised I could cancel the legs into the CA, so that was the first time I had a viable option for my special beyond prayer and wild hope.

Since then I had a brief experiment/look around and have been drilling:
cr.lp, st.mp, cr.mk, HK legs
b.hp, HK legs

I found the 4 part one above pretty hard to get the timing on, I found I could do it very reliably if I paid attention to the hits happening on the screen. That sounds obvious, but when you're first practicing these things it's very easy to zone out. I'm just on the earliest stages of being able to hit confirm with these things.

ONLINE

I break up my training sessions with online matches because you just need the experience. I've largely taken my ego out of it, to not be defined by wins and losses - I caught it creeping back in at times, when I have 2 wins in ranked I start thinking about the 3 consecutive wins trophy and it goes. I tried to have one more win before I finished and it gets you stressed going into a match. My win rate is somewhere just below 50% at the moment, but that should be irrelevant.

WHEN I WIN
I wouldn't say I have too clear of a strategy at the moment. My blocking and punishing is getting there (from non-existent to existent), but my punish will just reflex to a sweep. I know I have to get there with my combos. I can get my CA combo out sometimes but at the moment I've a little too much on my plate to hitconfirm that. I can usually see that the other player doesn't have an effective punish and is generally a bit panicky. Some people just don't know how to follow up at all. Very frequently I'll see Ryu's give up the fireball game when I counter the first with my own. Then they stand and shit themselves while I walk in behind a lp fireball. It's alright, I won't know what to do with you when I get there.

I would say I lose to:
- Good players
- Good old solid Ryu players
- Sometimes very bad players who jump in a lot because they'll just get enough heavies in that I'm not punishing frequently enough and my block/response is off. I see my old self in them.
- Jumping in. Not all the time! I can block it, I think Chun Li's back HK seems very situational and will be tricky to learn to AA with. I wonder if her standard HK is any good for this with it's massive reach. I'm making fast progress with this though.
- Sweeps. I am blocking, but I will reflexively come out with a sweep that gets countered by their sweep (esp. Nash and Cammy). I know I have to work out the timings on these, and the sweep is a reflexive bad habit.
- Zangief: Players frequently have a good arsenal of combos that seem to have massive range and I haven't worked out his hurtboxes yet, so I'm in trouble.

Not that you see that many. Mostly Ryu, a lot of Cammys as of yesterday, some Nashes.

I can see the appeal of Cammy but she's a little too fancy. I know Chun Li is possibly the best, but I like that she's built around just core SF competency and that's what I need.

Chun-Li likes crepes

Fignuts 02-24-2016 06:25 PM

Chun's standing lk is a really good anti air as well. Less situational than back hk, but less damage.

Kalyx triaD 02-25-2016 08:29 AM

I'd dig that for an alt. Love what she wears now tho.

Kalyx triaD 02-25-2016 08:30 AM

Cammy is not 'too fancy'.

The Rogerer 02-25-2016 08:38 AM

What I mean is that her diverse range of specials would encourage me to try out different stuff when I'm trying just to learn normals and combos. I don't have an easy answer for a string of fireballs with Chun Li so I have to deal with them the hard way. She seems like a hell of a lot of fun to play with though.

Kalyx triaD 02-25-2016 04:14 PM

Block or jump over fireballs.

Fignuts 02-25-2016 07:11 PM

Her v skill is built to wreck projectile zoners from across the screen. Granted, it's too slow to use on reaction to a fireball, but if they're throwing them willy nilly it should be easy to predict, and you can hit them with a big combo.

Fignuts 02-25-2016 08:41 PM

Think I'm going to try the hori fight commander. Hate the ps4 controller. Share button too close to the d-pad. Occasionaly slip and go to the ps4 menu whilst my opponent lays into me. Also find the d-pad itself awkward, with it being four buttons instead of one solid piece.

Still considering a stick down the line, but this will do for now.

Kalyx triaD 02-25-2016 10:39 PM

Never touched the Share button. Plant the upper center of your thumb slightly below the dpad center.

The Rogerer 02-26-2016 03:24 AM

I've never hit the share button, are you using the ball of your thumb on the dpad?

My dark secret is that I've been using the analogue stick. It's been alright actually, and the d pad seems okay but my old urges were to press too hard. I usually practice between both and might go back to pad depending on how I feel.

The best advice is to find a way to relax what you're doing with your thumb. I won't talk anyone out of buying a pad, but sometimes it can be like wanting to spend your way out of a problem.

Also I cope with fireballs alright. Nobody goes hard on them anyway

Fignuts 02-26-2016 06:23 AM

Nah I still plain don't like that style of dpad. Plus, I like having all six buttons on the front of the controller, and ppp and kkk on the right trigger.

The Rogerer 02-26-2016 08:13 AM

It's not ideal but you can thank nintendo.

Tell me about your travelling thumb though

Fignuts 02-26-2016 06:59 PM

Honestly has a lot to do with my awkwardNess on that dpad. Dunno.

The Rogerer 02-28-2016 09:02 AM

Think it's 500LP for every division and no, it's Ryus all the way up.

Rarely ever fight a Cammy even when I get a gold league mis-match. It's all Ryu, Karin, Bison and Nash.

Heisenberg 03-02-2016 01:26 AM

Is there a YouTube of the storyline like Mortal Kombat did with their 360/PS3/PC game? Plus MKX. I would like to view that, but also try and catch a warning if it's super good or bad

Kalyx triaD 03-02-2016 02:14 AM

Story isn't out yet. The prologue stuff with just voice over art is on youtube tho.

You do raise a point about how pointless it is going all out for a story mode in a fighting game when people can just youtube it. Big cinematic story modes just don't work for a fighting game unless you go the arksys model. DoA5 story mode even had a decent presentation but we're talking about a mode with little to no replay value. That to me makes it a waste of funds.

The Rogerer 03-02-2016 03:29 AM

All visual entertainment is then pointless. Actually, this would come the closest tbf.

People want arcade mode because they do. Survival mode is such a slog.

Kalyx triaD 03-02-2016 07:15 AM

That does not invalidate visual entertainment lol. This is a point predicated on the subject being a fighting game. I don't say youtube halo or uncharted cutscenes. There's a reason.

The Rogerer 03-02-2016 08:22 AM

Heisenberg doesn't want to play the game but he wants to watch the story mode, so there's an intrinsic value to it. Your point seemed to be that if it was watchable on youtube it was a waste of money. Hence all visual art, which can be youtubed. Even if it doesn't have replay value, a cool story mode works for the brand.

Halo's story is fantastically unremarkable but yet people buy wholesale into the sacred lore of The Master Chief and read 50 books for some reason.

Kalyx triaD 03-02-2016 09:17 AM

The story of halo manifest almost directly thru gameplay. Fighting games by design can't do this because fighting games by design were not meant for that. It would be adding cgi cutscenes to tetris. Pointless.

Sakurai addressed exactly this when he seen all his brilliant Smash 3 cutscenes get youtube'd. He very specifically said he wouldn't waste time on such a thing again. And he didn't. And Smash 4 still has tons of shit for single player.

Heisenberg 03-02-2016 09:20 AM

I will purchase Street Fighter down the line, but I'd get an earful if I bought a $60 game when my newly built PC made it possible to play the 140+ games in my Steam library. I just didn't want to wait to watch it, big fan of the series and their backgrounds.

The Smash 3 cutscenes were awful, as was that mode. That's neither here nor there.

It's not pointless though. I know you're not into isolated story but that doesn't make it worthless. Pretty much all games do this anyway.

Street Fighter can have cool cutscenes in it. You can put them at the end of an arcade mode.

You can't watch them on Youtube if they don't exist.

They did this back with SF II as well. Blanka being "Jimmy" and being reunited with his mother. Chun Li visiting her fathers grave after avenging his death by defeating Bison, etc.

It'd be a neat feature for those who aren't obsessed with online or stick to online only.

But weren't you pro-story for Mortal Kombat? Haven't you also told people to youtube things? Just trying to understand. This isn't a "gotcha" thing or whatever, just think that by NOT including a singleplayer element like "arcade" in an arcade fighter is really dumb and you alienate a portion of your consumers, regardless of how big or small.

Kalyx triaD 03-02-2016 06:47 PM

Don't care about that mess. We need modes with mileage.

Kalyx triaD 03-02-2016 06:47 PM

And I never cared about MK's story mode. You maybe thinking Rev. And I don't recall saying anything about arcade mode. Quote me if I'm wrong. I only spoke about the wastefulness of a fighting game story mode with cutscenes and all that jazz.

Fignuts 03-03-2016 01:13 PM

I think a good compromise is including a story mode where you don't advance by just winning fights but by meeting specific requirements that help train you in the game'a mechanics and more advanced techniques.

Fignuts 03-03-2016 01:22 PM

Dhalsim probably my worst match up atm. In large part because people so rarely pick him, so when I do come up against someone who knows what they are doing, I have no answer for their offense.

Should just play with him in battle lounge for a week, so I can get a handle on what to expect.

Kalyx triaD 03-03-2016 01:25 PM

Haven't met one yet online. But I very rarely play.

thecc 03-03-2016 07:54 PM

Yeah, Dhalsim is a mother fucker to fight. I've had success using Laura against him though. Her v skill is pretty clutch against him.

Fignuts 03-03-2016 09:00 PM

Holy fuck just made an epic comeback. I was Laura, guy had a pretty good Ken. Had no life. Lifebar was literally empty. Managed to block all his combos and mix ups, while chipping away at his health which was at about almost half. No meter either.

We ran it back in battle lounge and had a bunch of good matches.

Emperor Smeat 03-04-2016 06:21 PM

Capcom announced they have finished work on a penalty system for those who constantly rage quit or try to cheat the rankings system in the game.

So far at least 30 players have been semi-punished from the video system and were offered one more chance as a warning before the real punishments happen.

Also working on a more severe punishment for those beyond any hope of ever following good sportsmanship rules.

Quote:

"We will be punishing players on a weekly basis who have extremely high disconnect rates coupled with unrealistic win rates," Capcom said.

The developer also assured players that it will only punish the "worst offenders." If your Internet connection dropped because the power went out or something, you won't face any penalty. Capcom considers someone a "rage-quitter" if they have an 80-90 percent disconnect rate.

So what's the penalty for quitters? Pretty severe, it turns out. Capcom said it will reset a player's League Points for rage-quitting behavior.

"Moving forward, we will be making a sweep each week based on accounts in our system that have abnormally high disconnect rates (particularly at the end of the match) and will reset their League Points," it explained.
http://www.gamespot.com/articles/str.../1100-6435379/

The Rogerer 03-04-2016 06:56 PM

I got disconnected in only 1 match so far, and it would totally have looked like a ragequit to the other player... Necalli's ultra just hit in the final round.

The Rogerer 03-05-2016 03:02 PM

i know I was crazy for using the stick anyway, but I moved onto the d-pad when I took Cammy for a spin through survival mode. I was able to quickly get the knack of the difference between her cr.mk to cannon spike or spiral arrow on the pad. I could manage it on the analogue but there is just too much thumb movement required on DP movement, which I wasn't using with Chun Li.

Kalyx triaD 03-05-2016 06:41 PM

I used to play SF4 entirely on thumbstick. Still play KI on it. But SFV and other 2D fighters is straight pad play. It really depends on input assistance and the overall speed of the game.

The Rogerer 03-05-2016 06:49 PM

It was a bit of a necessity with that flipping 360 d-pad. I think the PS4 one is better than the previous Sony ones anyway.

Playing while I was starting out with the thumbstick was better, as I'd actually panic and press too hard on the d-pad so I'd tire my thumb out quickly. Now I've been practicing a few weeks I appreciate the shorter travel and can restrain myself

The stick is still viable I think, the trouble is that the shortcuts can make it more likely to accidently fire out your critical art with the DP. Like I could do what I said above with Cammy, just more shakey.

Please sort out survival mode. The hardest part is waking your brain up at round 27.

Emperor Smeat 03-10-2016 07:14 PM

Capcom revealed the list of tweaks and stuff arriving with the next patch of the game. Challange Mode with better tutorials and a new Online Rematch Mode were some of the stuff revealed in the list.

Quote:

Coming this month is the Challenge Mode, which will include something many new or more casual fans have been asked for: better tutorials.

According to the Capcom Unity blog, here’s what the game will be getting in that regard:

Beginner Tutorials: 12 lessons covering, movement, normal attacks, special attacks, V-System, throws, counter hits, chip/recoverable damage, etc.
Intermediate Tutorials: 11 lessons covering projectiles, invincibility frames, armor and armor break, recovery, cross-up attacks, anti-air options, etc.
Advanced Tutorials: 4 lessons covering back dashing, frame advantage/disadvantage, combo potential, button priority, etc.
Character Tutorials: 16 lessons covering each individual character.

Challenge Mode will also offer up Trials, which will task you with performing a serious of combos that range from “basic to pro” that’ll earn you Fight Money if completed.

When it comes to hopping online against opponents, the long-awaited upgrade to Battle Lounges will be coming as well, allowing for up to eight participants per lobby (with those players not active in a fight able to watch it as a spectator). The other neat addition—and something I wasn’t expecting—is a new Online Rematch Option. Now, after a Ranked Match is over, you’ll be able to challenge your opponent to a rematch—and if they accept, you’ll be switched to a best 2 out of 3 set instead.

Outside of the previously known Challenge mode, general improvements gleaned from both fans and internal testing constitute a new rematch option in matchmaking, where both players can agree to settle their feud in a best of three. Battle lounge improvements and a few bug fixes will come packaged with the first March update.

On March 30th, Alex arrives and you’ll get to buy him, as well as other character’s outfits, through the activated In-Game Shop. As a precaution, however, Capcom has decided to delay the launch of Zenny, the game’s exchange currency for real money, until they feel confident enough in their sometimes buggy servers to keep data secure. As a token for waiting, Alex will be available for free to all players as a trial period before the Zenny system is activated, meaning those short on in-game Fight Money can still play as the DLC character. Once Zenny is activated, Alex will no longer be free to those without a Season Pass and will have to be earned or purchased through the original means.

Speaking of Season Pass holders, they’ll be the only ones able to access the premium DLC costumes during the free trial period, and as an apology, a new free stage at a later date.

The first round of the Street Fighter V March update, which includes Challenge mode, launches March 28th. Alex and the in-game store unlocks on March 30th. The free DLC trial period is indefinite until further notice.

In terms of prices, Guile will be free to play till the in-game Zenny shop opens, the stage itself costs 70,000 Fight Money, and Season Pass owners are already covered for both.

As for quitters, Capcom is planning to roll out a system to "identify players who have high disconnect rates during matches," notify them via in-game message, and "lock them out of matchmaking for a period of time." Previously, the company penalized bad apples who had an "80-90% disconnect rate."

Fignuts 04-21-2016 01:08 AM

I want to play as him if only to figure the match up out. No idea what moves are unsafe. All of them look unsafe, but when I try to counter attack he blocks.

Fignuts 04-21-2016 05:57 AM

Guy in battle lounge getting tricky with bison. Got a few wins over my laura. Resolve that I am not leaving the room til I take this mother fucker down. Adapt to all his patterns. Go beast mode and take his ass down hard in 2 rounds.

Finally get the w and guy fucks off and calls me "trash"

Fucking FGC.

Kalyx triaD 04-21-2016 07:51 AM

Not the most gracious losers.

Fignuts 04-21-2016 07:56 AM

Sucks cause we had some great matches. Even the ones I lost were down to the wire. Could have played more together and gotten better, but NOPE. Dude needs to play scrubs to make himself feel good.

Also, wtf at the zenny shop getting delayed again. I want MMA Laura god damn it.

Kalyx triaD 04-21-2016 06:41 PM

I have no clue but free Alex and Guile until then.

Kalyx triaD 05-04-2016 01:30 PM

Noticed too late Figgy sent an invite but I was having offline skirmishes anyway. But it reminds me...

Shall TPdub have a tourny on this? Online is good, it's on one console, it's the most accessible and easy to understand SF since Alpha. We should set something up for the summer. We missed AE and Ultra.

Fignuts 05-04-2016 07:22 PM

Is there a way to invite people from your friend's list, or is it just players you've faved?

Gonna need everyone to post their fighter id if it's the latter.

Kalyx triaD 05-05-2016 01:10 PM

Yeah it's really dumb.

Emperor Smeat 05-10-2016 12:08 AM

According to Capcom, Street Fighter V sales fell well short of what they were expecting by now.

1.4 million copies sold since launch but they were targeting 2 million to be sold by March. In terms of breakdowns, PC version is struggling a lot more than the PS4 version.

Fignuts 05-10-2016 01:30 AM

What did they expect with a barebones releasethat caters only to hardcore fighting game fans?

Kalyx triaD 05-10-2016 01:03 PM

Yeah I'd say that's still pretty good for something as naked and to the point as SFV.

Emperor Smeat 05-10-2016 06:36 PM

Apparently the lag problem on the PS4 has started to make competitive players begin to complain en masse to Capcom especially with EVO coming up soon.

Been a known or big issue since March but the community only started to get really upset or aware of how bad it is very recently especially with EVO 2016 being close.

Destructoid thinks the issue itself is a double edge sword for Capcom since leaving it unfixed is going to impact competitive play but if they fix it, might cause a situation where some players end up at a competitive disadvantage.

Kalyx triaD 05-10-2016 07:06 PM

Fuck those players, fix it. Wtf

drave 05-10-2016 07:49 PM

Wow.

"We might fix it if we want, but it might take some of the contenders we like out of contention because they are used to playing on a shitty connection."

It is almost like pandering for ratings or something. No excuse NOT to fix it. If they are pros, they will adapt and conquer. If not, then out with the trash.

Fignuts 05-25-2016 08:22 PM

We're not getting a reveal til the 30th aren't we?

Shittiest marketing department ever.

Kalyx triaD 05-25-2016 11:05 PM

Same deal.

Fignuts 05-30-2016 03:22 AM

Ibuki looks cool. Always hated her classic outfit. Paperbag, homeless ninja outfit. Terrible. This one is much better imo.

Kalyx triaD 05-30-2016 10:35 AM

She looks so jumpy. So ninja-y.

Would have sworn Balrog was next.

Fignuts 05-30-2016 02:22 PM

People just assumed he was next because he was playable at an event a while ago, albeit in an unfinished state.

I figure Juri is next, since we've alreadygotten some world warrior and third strike love.

Emperor Smeat 05-31-2016 03:36 PM

According to translations from Capcom's official Japanese website for the game, Ibuki has been quietly delayed till next month.

Company waited until the last day of the month to announce this month's character wouldn't arrive. New plan is to arrive around the same day as the game's Story mode.

Fignuts 06-01-2016 05:15 AM

Fucking awful.

How do you announce a delay the day something is expected? I repeat. Shittiest marketing team in gaming history.

How hard is it to show a screen shot or concept art the first week, game updates tje second, and a trailer the third, and a heads up ahead of time on delays?

Emperor Smeat 06-01-2016 06:15 PM

Current plans is for both Ibuki and Story Mode to arrive by the end of June.

Quote:

We can now expect Ibuki to arrive toward the end of June alongside the game's Story Mode update. "We'll have a blog with more info surrounding the June content and other topics the community has brought up in the next day or so," Capcom tweeted
