Review embargo lifted and it's getting rave reviews so far

That spoiler free GD?

And not surprised about its reception. Reeves is coming off the heels of two very well reviewed, very financially successful ape films, with his let me in remake right behind those. I want a fan but cloverfield was also successful with critics and at the box office.

Now that reviews are in and my bias desire for a critically acclaimed movie have been met, I can go full on excitement mode as I’m already booked to see this Friday morning.

GD 02-28-2022 01:37 PM

Yes. He'll make another video with spoilers later in the week.

GD 03-04-2022 11:10 AM

I saw it earlier today and had a good time. Dano was excellent.

Damian Rey 2.0 03-04-2022 12:35 PM

About to start in 10 minutes. Very excited. Primed myself by watching Chinatown again and Seven the last few nights.

Damian Rey 2.0 03-04-2022 05:58 PM

Already reviewed it in the movie review thread but damn did I love this movie.

Destor 03-04-2022 09:44 PM

one thing i find particularly interesting is the film has nothing to offer children. it plays out well for me a an individual but its an odd thought to have a batman film that isnt remotely marketable to a younger audience. from the pacing to the general plot structure and the light horror elements besides this film has nearly no chance in appealing, let alone holding the attention of, a young boy audience.

im not saying that as a positive or a negative. just a general observation.

Damian Rey 2.0 03-05-2022 12:58 AM

It very much felt like an adults only movie and targeted at the 18-34 crowd. Which I don’t think is bad. It’s refreshing given how many marvel movies we’ve been given over the years.

AguileraSZN 03-05-2022 05:16 PM

The last good Batman had Jack Nicholson in it.

Destor 03-05-2022 05:24 PM

bad take or troll i cant tell

Hahahaha

Destor 03-06-2022 01:37 AM

the batman is cruising to a 120mil opening weekend. many are comparing it to spideys recent 260mil open but since this is an R feature i feel like that's unfair. very strong open for an R film

Destor 03-06-2022 01:38 AM

would land it right behind deadpool 2 (125mil)

Destor 03-06-2022 01:40 AM

one thing i think might make this film struggle is becaus it so plot driven repeat views might be low so it could potentially have less legs than other films in the franchise/genre

Destor 03-06-2022 01:45 AM

probably worth noting the deadpool 2 had half the production budget of the batman but still. i think 120 is a good open for a reboot that lacked consumer convidence going in. word of mouth will give it a good 3 weeks id wager.

Seanny One Ball 03-06-2022 02:07 AM

Post COVID numbers are different.

Give me that at least.

Destor 03-06-2022 08:50 AM

the new spidey is post covid and had the 2nd biggest open of all time behind avengers endgame. a film with a 19 picture lead up. in a lot of ways its not reasonable to compare spidey 3 with avengers 4.

there was a covid period that absolutely impacted tickets but we are post covid. the news and the government might tell you youre in pandemic but every day people have completely moved on.

Damian Rey 2.0 03-06-2022 01:46 PM

The next big studio movie i believe is Morbius and that’s another month out. So far the Batman is tracking to be really popular with general audiences, which is what counts, and it’s got that audience all to itself for a few more weekends.

My wife, who isn’t into superhero movies and refused to watch the Nolan trilogy, loved this movie. Namely because it’s a police procedural style story being worked by a guy in a bat suit. But the unraveling narrative and Batman detecting is what sucked her in. I’ve heard the same from other non fanatic moviegoers that I’m close with.

Destor 03-06-2022 03:10 PM

i think once the people who were skeptical catch this on hbo max next month praise is going to get even louder. nolans run level? i dont see that due to the rating. but its going to get more popular over time i think.

Damian Rey 2.0 03-06-2022 03:30 PM

The movie is pg13 in the states, so it won’t have trouble getting those younger audiences in. Not sure where you’re at country wise but in the US the rating won’t hinder it. Only constant complaint I see is it’s not humorous at all and it’s a very serious, time heavy film, which is a huge left turn for audiences thinking they’re getting a fun marvel style movie.

Then again, Joker was really bleak and it made a killing. No pun intended.

Destor 03-06-2022 03:56 PM

joker did make big money

Destor 03-06-2022 03:57 PM

and if the film is pg13 then the returns are pretty bad tbh...still i think streaming will help

Lock Jaw 03-06-2022 05:03 PM

Spoilers of the movie:

SPOILER: show
Wow, Riddler what a hero... he succeeds with his plans, roots out more corruption than Batman ever did, AND solves the homelessness problem!

Damian Rey 2.0 03-06-2022 09:25 PM

Second viewing got an ovation at the end. Theater was packed.

While I agree work you Destor about the opening not being as big as it could, we have to remember that this movie is a reboot and the last two films with Batman were turds, Pattinson doesn’t have the mainstream following he likely will after this movie and is still shaking off twilight dust from the average moviegoer.

I think it’ll have a strong second weekend and hold its own through the middle of next month when it goes to HBO max, where it’ll likely get numbers.

Destor 03-06-2022 09:43 PM

i dont blame the film. the dc brand is weak and the lead is trying to win over a demo that actively hates him. im certain though this will be like pirates of the Caribbean. the 1st film didnt sell tickets. it was a hit at home. when the 2nd film dropped everyone who passed on the original turned out in droves. i think this incarnation has a future. but...opening weekend...still under on recouping production costs never mind marketing...yeah its not great. in 2 year though public perception will have shifted on this. bump this thread and quote me.

Destor 03-06-2022 09:45 PM

as long as warner backs the reeves incarnation i think itll do fine long term

slik 03-06-2022 11:57 PM

I think they are 'all in' since Penguin is getting an HBO series or something like that

Depp as The Riddler
I would like to see Depp as The Riddler based solely on the fact that he is a damn fine actor and I like to watch damn fine actors at work. Perhaps he could be somebody drafted in by the police to help them find Batman, during the investigation "Ed Nigma" (I wouldn't use that name) discovers that Batman is in fact Bruce Wayne but rather than telling the police he keeps this information to himself and he becomes The Riddler and begins to torment Wayne/Batman (insert personal reason as to why he would do that into the plot).

The Joker Returns
With the rise of The Riddler in effect and his targeting of Wayne/Batman starting to effect the city at large the police turn to someone they believe can understand The Riddler's mind. Through Harley Quinn (Britany Murphy is a good fit for the role and could also provide the 'love interest' for Bruce) we have a 'Silence of the Lambs' setup between her and The Joker, played by....

Johnny Depp (hear me out).

I'd have him filmed from behind/shoot from his perspective so that you would never see his face (Depp would do his best to nail Ledger's take on the voice). I think there'd be an excellent duality in having both characters played by the same guy - as long as it was someone like Depp.

**An alternative is to use the 'Silence of the Lambs' scenario to twist "Ed Nigma" from police helper to the character he would become. "Ed Nigma" would use The Joker to try and 'get inside the mind of Batman' as Joker seems to understand what drives and motivates Batman. During these meetings Joker can subtley turn "Ed" into The Riddler.**

Penguin
An idea for Penguin would be to have him reform the Mob before becoming Mayor of Gotham. The people of Gotham are willing to vote anybody into power that they feel can stop the vigilante known as Batman. This comes as a knee jerk reaction tothe events of The Dark Knight (i.e. Batman "killing" Dent).

This however is a little too close to Batman Returns for my liking so an alternative would be to mix the two scenarios above and have The Riddler become Mayor - seeking Batman as the powerful Mayor "Nigma" as well as tormenting Bruce Wayne as The Riddler. Just for kicks of course.

Other Villains
I'm not too keen on Catwoman, Bane or a returning Ras BUT I can see how they could be done. Clayface should be steered completely away from - unless he's just a guy suffering from a disfigurative facial disease (akin to the Elephant Man) that somehow has some power in the Mob or something. I dunno, not really interested tbh.

This is where I lose you all...

Robin
At first I thought the idea of "The Boy Wonder" appearing in the Nolan created Batman Universe was a big no-no but now I've come to like the idea. However, there would need to be some major changes...

- I would at no point use the name Robin (unless it just so happened to be the characters middle name that could be referenced as a little injoke towards the end of the film).

- I'd also drop the circus background that we've seen before. Far too campy.

- He wouldn't be Batman's sidekick and wouldn't get a costume.

Batman would use "Robin" as a go between so that he could still communicate with Commissioner Gordon without risking Gordan's position. I'd have the character be some kinda streetwise teenager who at some point sees Batman save someone from a mugger (or something similar) thus learning that Batman is not the bad guy he's being made out to be.

Now comes the single reason I'd have "Robin" in the film: his method of getting around the city...parkour (freerunning). I think a chase secene with him running across rooftops, flipping, rolling, diving from ledge to ledge, etc would be kinda cool. Even have the chase be against Batman.

Anyways, there's my take on a few things. Feel free to rip it apart. Or better yet try to tie together the loose strands that I've left.

This was a post I made in 2008 about where the Nolan movies could go after TDK. Think there’s a few common threads there. Also completely missed on how close I was with the Robin as another name with an “in joke towards the end of the movie”.

That was stellar. I love that he looks like he was dropped in acid. More please.

Big Vic 04-20-2022 08:44 AM

Really think we need to put the Joker on ice for a decade.

drave 04-20-2022 09:02 AM

They could do MORE, for sure.

Court of Owls seems like it'd be PERFECT for the current atmosphere.

Red Hood and/or Arkham Knight (but Red Hood really).

Court of Owls would be a great choice for a movie IMO.

Damian Rey 2.0 04-20-2022 02:49 PM

I would love court if owls. No man’s land also seems like an easy set up given the ending of this one.
