"This entire concept seems retarded to me. The people doing it don't realize how dumb this is, so I can't really blame them for it. Just pretend it's an alternate reality! Or not Dragonball at all! I'll be glad when this whole thing blows over!" - Akira Toriyama, paraphrased

Fignuts 02-09-2009 12:38 AM

Did you just make that up, or is that real?

.44 Magdalene 02-09-2009 12:42 AM

If you're asking me, I was just taking the grin-and-bear-it-with-shifty-eyes tone out of the quote Crippler posted.

V 02-09-2009 12:55 AM

"i'm not ready for this"

just destroys the whole basis of dragonball

goku has never pussied out of anything, and is the one all their friends depend on to be strong and happy through it all

if goku had said that line during the anime... everyone would have just given up, they would have all died, and the anime would have ended.

Fignuts 02-09-2009 12:59 AM

I guess the only good part is that this is so far from what dragonball is, that I can't even get offended as a fan.

And I think a live action movie is extremely far from dbz even if they tried to be faithful, as Toriyama's art style is what makes dragonball, dragonball. Anything else just feels like something else entirely.

.44 Magdalene 02-09-2009 01:01 AM

He's a generic young American highschool student forced into a situation he's unfamiliar with, a bit of a weirdo that the presumably nerdy audience of equally white young American highschool students can identify with by placing themselves in the shoes of, maybe even living out fantasies of escapism and acceptance by outside sources through him.

They decided to name him Goku for some reason

Fignuts 02-09-2009 01:04 AM

Honestly, they could have kept goku's personality intact.

.44 Magdalene 02-09-2009 01:04 AM

They could have done alot of things, up to and including not making this movie.

Kalyx triaD 02-09-2009 11:07 AM

True and true. Rather not voice my thoughts on the matter, arguement's getting old.

Savio 02-10-2009 11:02 AM

This movie will suck hands down

Well at least her hair has a little blue in it.

I have a feeling this one is going to go right next to the Van Damme Street Fighter and Batman & Robin in my collection of wonderfully awful movies.

Kalyx triaD 02-11-2009 12:54 PM

I really dig her design, she could head her own feature if it wasn't Dragonball related. I'm thinking cyber-punk heroine with a taste for guns and gadgetry who leads a resistance faction against a fascist government. I'd call it, "Digital".

Fox 02-19-2009 01:35 AM

I cannot see that faggot yelling "Kamehameha!" and me buying it.

Kalyx triaD 02-19-2009 08:14 AM

You can hear him saying it in the trailer and I think he sells it. In the Jap track it's a squeeky voice doing it so there's one improvement right there. I got used to Goku sounding like a school girl at times but let's just say I didn't mind the FUNimation tracks.

Already a screenplay for "Z". If it means Super Sayijins and Vegeta, bring it on.

Yamcha's perfect.

Fignuts 03-10-2009 08:52 PM

Sweet merciful christ that looks awful.

Kalyx triaD 03-10-2009 08:56 PM

LOL

Kalyx triaD 03-15-2009 05:53 AM

Amateur reviews are in. The general consensus is the movie is 'surprisingly watchable'. And these are fans, pretty sure 'professional critics' will tear it apart. Everybody says it's too short.

Savio 03-15-2009 08:13 AM

and I cant see them

Kalyx triaD 03-18-2009 05:04 AM

Won't give a proper review until everybody seen it but I will say Goku is definitely a Sayijin.

Destor 03-18-2009 06:04 AM

How was James Marsters?

Destor 03-18-2009 06:04 AM

Cause thats all I care about.

Kalyx triaD 03-18-2009 07:27 AM

Review Soon

Dark-Slicer Diago 04-10-2009 09:24 PM

I haven't got the chance to see this yet but I here Marsters and Chow were the only ones that made you feel they were the characters. I also remember Marsters saying he actually watchs the original Dragon Ball when he can.

Kalyx triaD 04-11-2009 10:11 AM

Which is too bad because he doesn't get the screen time to really nail down his Piccolo. The last 10min should have been the whole movie's tone. It was the only time the movie got... grand. I'm not talking about the fight scenes either. The first hour and the last ten minutes are two different movies.

UmbrellaCorporation 04-12-2009 11:33 AM

I admit it, I loved this movie.

Mainly because as a fan of the show since my late elementary school days, I was expecting a horrible, horrible abomination somewhere on the level of the Super Mario Brothers movie.

I did not get that. I got a Dragonball film that is indeed surprisingly watchable, and while it won't win any major awards (nor should it), it wasn't the train wreck I imagined it would be.

I only found a few things to nitpick that I remember, one of the big ones being that Piccolo can do a Kamehameha for some reason. That, and the fact that Yamcha never fought at all, to my recollection.

Maybe a few things here or there bugged me, but not enough for me to personally send this movie to hell.

Kalyx triaD 04-12-2009 11:38 AM

Piccolo did one? When?

And yeah, no Wolf Fang Fist action.

Sepholio 04-14-2009 04:11 AM

I may consider going to see this

Gone Mad 04-22-2009 12:53 AM

I just saw this today and it's watchable. I came in with a "so bad, it's good" mentality and I left alright with the finished product. I still feel like Fox did this like they did with the original Fantastic Four movie when they first bought them. Just make a shitty movie with a quality franchise name and it will sell regardless.

Anyways, the movie. What worked: It moves nonstop, hardly a boring moment. You can follow the characters and care for them abit. The actors do their job, particularly Roshi and Goku, as they were the closest to the characters. It has its funny moments and if you forget it's a variation on the Dragonball story and watch it as just a wacky action movie, you'll be fine.

What doesn't work: Where to begin? The writing, the timing and pacing (too short and way too fast). Yamcha... yeaaa, Piccolo not enough build-up. Sometimes it looked cheap and had some awkward moments and I just didn't get the whole epic feel the series gives. Hopefully, if there is a sequel, it will all be fixed up and we get a true DB movie. 5/10

Kalyx triaD 04-22-2009 01:30 PM

They already wrote the sequel.
