i was guilty of that too..i said that i love how there is people in this that obv wont win, heath slater, gabriel, (actually is aid GAYbriel which doesnt make sense, i like him lol) sin cara and daniel bryan. i ate my words and i loved the genuine emotion he had winning that. good for him. and yes i will admit he is growing on me, i marked a lil for him at smackdown here in tucson. i just wish he would get new entrance music

The guy is a pro. He knew exactly the type of reaction he was going to get, just like he did at One Night Stand. He played it perfectly. He never reacted negatively towards the crowd, which would have taken the attention away from Punk and the story they were trying to build. He did brilliantly to go out there, put on one of the better performance I've seen him have (not a single slip-up unlike Punk) and literally crawl quietly down the ramp at the end. You would be forgiven for forgetting that his kayfabe careeer was on the line last night too.

I winced at that almost as much as Swagger falling on top of Kofi in the ladder match. Punk looked a bit sloppy last night, not that it mattered.

Shadrick 07-18-2011 10:49 AM

I'm watching the HD replay now and I'm almost tearing up watching Daniel Bryans emotion when he grabbed that briefcase. Almost.

JimmyMess 07-18-2011 10:52 AM

so, do we get a new belt yet?

Chavo Classic 07-18-2011 10:53 AM

Bryan is the ultimate underdog. I thought he was just filler for that 8 man match, but then he goes and grabs the contract.

Rammsteinmad 07-18-2011 10:56 AM

WOW!!!

That's two fantastic PPV's in a row WWE, please keep this up. Utterly amazing event! My thoughts:

Smackdown MITB was the better of the two ladder matches. Didn't expect DB to win, so I'm excited to see where this goes, especially because I wouldn't have expected WWE to see him as World Champion material just yet. Very unpredictable match with some nice spots. Sin Cara taking that Powerbomb was vicious, but I guess that's him written off for 30 days.

Divas match I cooked a pizza, so missed most of it.

Mark Henry vs. Big Show was pretty meh, but considering the shape of both guys they definitely put on a better match than I would have expected. I think the rest of the event was so awesome nobody really cared about this match anyway.

Raw MITB was good and had a couple of spots in it which we haven't seen before, but for some reason I found it hard to get into this one and pick a credible winnner that I'd be excited for. I hope the Miz's injury was just part of the match, or that it's legit but not too serious. Don't really care much for Del Rio winning, but good match anyway.

Christian vs. Orton was awesome, as have all of their matches been. I hope this isn't the end of their rivalry, because this is very rare for WWE over the last few years, but we have a feud here which has been running for three months and hasn't yet lost people's interest. Christian finally proven he belongs at the top, and Orton stepping up to show his time at the top has been well-deserved. Great match, and a fantastic end which can easily be used to further this storyline (maybe a Hell in a Cell or a Ladder match?). Also, CHRISTIAN IS CHAMPION AGAIN!!! 8)

And of course, THE main event. In terms of match quality, build, emotion and audience reaction, this could easily go up there was Undertaker/Michaels or the first Iron Man match. Both men worked their asses off, took some really nasty bumps and really pulled out all the stops. That Superplex to the outside was sick. The ending was a huge rollercoaster ride of emotions, I had no idea what was going to happen. Then Del Rio came out and BAM! Punk knocked him out and left. Fucking incredible match and ending.

Easily one of the best PPV's this year, and this is certainly an achievement as WWE has really delivered this year (with the exception of Wrestlemania). It helped that the audience were really into the matches too. I think it's a pretty safe bet that CM Punk has resigned, or is working something out, but it's still interesting to see where this whole story goes.

MIZantine Empire 07-18-2011 10:57 AM

my stream cut out at two very shitty spots, the climax of orton/christian (froze) and right when vince walked out during the cena/punk match (disabled) had to scower the internet to find a replay.. moving on, there seemed to be alot of spots where people actually were getting hurt. i hope they dont think of scrapping this ppv, because honestly, the MITB match is one of my favs. and i totally agree that WWE executed this ppv, the build up, and everything perfectly. hats off to Cena for finally showing that top of the line guy mentallity. its been said, but i totally agree that i have never been this anxious for raw/smackdown. Chicago is also my new favorite crowd. that made the ppv so much more worth it. reminded me of the good ole days when the crowds were always hot

I guess I didn't. Didn't ruin anything for me though. The only obvious botch in the whole match was the FU reversal when Punk flipped and tried to land on his feet. Cole and King had to reiterate that he landed on his feet and Cena wasn't able to execute the move. It was an incredibly difficult thing to pull off so far into the match, so no harm done really.

blake639raw 07-18-2011 11:54 AM

I'm really enjoying the Summer of Punk II. Hopefully he sticks around until at least SummerSlam. With all the meaningless title changes these days, tonight took me back to the mid 90's, when title changes felt important. Kudos to Cena, Punk, and the WWE for the whole angle, and the match. I'd probably say this is MOTY for sure so far. If Vince doesn't see what a goldmine Punk could be by now, then he's an idiot for sure.

Hanso Amore 07-18-2011 12:58 PM

So who does Punk lose the title to tonight?

loopydate 07-18-2011 01:03 PM

Nobody. I think we get the build to Cena/ADR for the "vacant" title at Summerslam.

Hanso Amore 07-18-2011 01:08 PM

CMPunk CM Punk
On my couch. About to put the title on the line against Piston Honda.

I've probably watched the moment from Johnny Ace getting blasted to the end about 7 times now. The actual match was phenomenal and it would have been even without the story, but that crowd noise ridiculously loud actually had my heart racing.

Now to find out why my water isn't working. priorities and all that.

Rock Bottom 07-18-2011 01:56 PM

I wonder if Punk is going to show up on Raw and give Cena any credit for preventing another "screwjob," if it's going to be a full circle face turn, whether he tries to become heel again (good luck with that), whether he remains an anti-hero face that disregards Cena entirely (or even gloats about getting him fired), or doesn't show up at all.

I have to say, everyone was looking forward to MITB, it delivered hard, and now I'm sitting here waiting for Raw like a yokel.

Not. Bad.

We can finally also say that CM Punk outpopped DX. Any DX pop ever.

Just another reason for me not to like him.

Rock Bottom 07-18-2011 02:22 PM

If you haven't watched MITB and want to, click my name and check the visitor message at the top.

LK 07-18-2011 02:42 PM

Just watched the whole show and what can I say?

CM Punk vs John Cena had everything - an electric crowd, an amazing build up and two guys who told the perfect story. Punk was phenomenal and Cena wasn't far behind. So many times, I thought the match was over like when Cena countered the GTS into the STF only for Punk to counter into the Anaconda Vice or after the second Attitude Adjustement.

To me this was a display of the difference between the workers in TNA and WWE. These guys had the crowd in the palm of their hand without having to hit high spot after high spot. It was an incredible match with great psychology and hopefully not the beginning of the end but simply the end of the beginning cause right now, no one in the wrestling business can touch CM Punk.

Razzamajazz 07-18-2011 03:28 PM

kinda wonder what the atmosphere would have been like it this was anywhere but chiacgo

MIZantine Empire 07-18-2011 04:46 PM

watching the replay again (TY Rock Bottom) i was surprised that i didnt notice how big of a pop A-Ry got..with that crowd popping for him like that, guess he really is over. plus the gabriel 450 off the ladder was pretty sick

Rock Bottom 07-18-2011 05:04 PM

I think Riley will flop after his thing with The Miz comes to a final halt. I think The Miz will flop too. Unless you put The Miz in a noticable feud and let him get a little goofy (coming out dressed as The Rock, etc) or let him have a little more fun, it's gonna be a decent-sized waste.

Guy's talented. Not extremely, but talented. His "I, am the WWE, CHEHMPIAN" thing only had so much mileage though, and without any real goal in mind I think he'll simmer down.

They need to make feuds matter more somehow.

Mooияakeя™ 07-18-2011 05:09 PM

Awesome that it still says John Cena. Really really plays up to the fact of him not being with the company. TNA would of had the name plate changed like pricks.

weather vane 07-18-2011 05:13 PM

#BROKEN Hasney 07-18-2011 05:18 PM

I've not seen Cena that good since his feud with Lesnar, I have to say. If he is taking some time off after being "fired", let him go when he comes back. The only thing we usually see home do is get beaten down, then overcome the odds with the 5 moves of doom. He can even keep those 5 moves, just let him wrestle before that.

I loved that sequence where Punk countered every one of those moves, but Cena made him take them all in the end. Kick to the head for the U can't See Me before the 5-knuckle shuffle was gold.

Mooияakeя™ 07-18-2011 05:36 PM

Should write to WWE and state "THIS IS HOW YOU DO IT". Fucking every forum I go on there seems to be a post about this PPV. It's clearly got some people talking. I'm shit scared there gonna fuck it up.

Granted, it wasn't on this scale, but I remember being so fucking pumped around the Nexus thing and look at what happened there. I really don't think they'll drop it on this. Too many "risks"... with Punk ranting about "the back", pissing WWE/Disney films, the contract thing and on top of that more swearing and non-PG stuff lately.... it seems there's a lot going on here and would be stupid to just let it go.

I go with what some people said in the biz. It was Punks 3:16 moment a few weeks ago on RAW, and now it's got the potential for a Pro-Wrasslin' boom period about to kick off. If Trips has anything to do with this and his new office at WWEHQ, then awesome stuff. If not, I do believe when he gets a hand in it, it will go like this and a lot more less PG.

#BROKEN Hasney 07-18-2011 05:50 PM

The DVD and Blu-Ray are out 16th August in the US. I don't buy WWE discs unless they're cheap, but I may make an exception just to own this one.

Rammsteinmad 07-18-2011 06:39 PM

I also liked that the moves are doom were varied this time!

It's about time someone fliped over Cena's shoulder for that weird slam he does (even though Punk botched it), and the kick in the face during the 5 Knuckle Shuffle.

I was saying about this in the Chavo thread how the sequence of moves has become unbelievable that nobody ever counters it. 8)

LK 07-18-2011 06:45 PM

*MITB Spoiler* It Would Appear This Has Been Forgotten

But Christian is a 2 time World Heavyweight Champion!!!

:D:D:D:D:D

I really hope the story goes that there was some kind of stipulation in the contract what said that if Orton was disqualified, he doesn't get an automatic re-match, resulting in Christian doing everything he can to not face Orton for months.

XL 07-18-2011 06:55 PM

Yeah, they could do with cooling off Orton/Christian. Their matches have been great as has the fued but they risk running it into the ground.

On the flipside, who challenges Christian? Too early for a Daniel Bryan push to the Main Event? Turn Sheamus?

:y: That's what I'd do. If done right, he can get over as a face. He's been a heel ever since debuting on WWECW- Hell, Christian got a heel turn and has been back about as long as the "fella" has been in the company.

Again, I say he's well overdue.

Also, LK, your sig pic is a slight crop away from making punk look nude.

Finally, about that tweet v/Piston Honda... what if Punk loses?!?!? It'll be a real life version of the "hardcore title" thread. Also, a perfect opportunity to shoop the belt on him in his victory pose... AND TWEET IT BACK TO HIM!

P.S. Kane was first

P.S.S. I'm not counting Big Show because the World Heavyweight title does not have the lineage of the WCW Title.

Punk's not just a triple crown champion though. He joins the elite ranks of those who accomplished a Grand Slam championship:

  • World Tag Team Champion (with Kofi) 10/27/08
  • IC Champion 1/19/09
  • World Heavyweight Champion 6/30/08 (first reign)
  • WWE Champion 7/17/11
He joins 11 others in that group: Michaels, Triple H, Kane, Jericho, Kurt, Eddie, RVD, Booker, Jeff Hardy, JBL and Christian.

Also, Punk is the 23rd Triple Crown "champion", not the 2nd.

XL 07-19-2011 02:13 PM

"Grand Slam"/"Triple Crown" is all very messed up now with all of the changes in belts available, lineage changes, etc.

For example, nobody is saying Punk is the 2nd "Triple Crowner", he's the 2nd to win WWE, World and WWE's ECW Championship.

Innovator 07-19-2011 03:01 PM

Couldn't help but think "if the ref had any loyalty to the company, he'd have fast counted Punk whenever he was in a pin".

Someone should fire ref #8's ass!

VSG 07-19-2011 03:23 PM

It was Scott Armstrong, it's a CONSPIRACY!

#BROKEN Hasney 07-19-2011 03:27 PM

Would have been awesome if Little Guido was the ref and fast counted every Cena pin, but Punk still kicked out and won the match with a slow count after the GTS. Or stopped after 2 with an earlier GTS with Vince watching and did the old Shane McMahon two middle fingers. Been a while since we had a heel ref.

Lock Jaw 07-19-2011 03:51 PM

PPV was great.

I seriously can't remember the last time I was into a match so much as Punk/Cena. Jaw dropped on numerous occasions when I thought it was over. Fans were all over it too.

Also loved that Christian won, even if it was via spitting.

Honestly the only semi-letdown was Daniel Bryan winning the MitB. Hopefully he can turn it into a good thing.
