At least its better than when KC hosted it. All they got was the DH spot I believe.

Frank Drebin 07-06-2014 10:27 PM

Jays got a steal in Reimold. Always liked him save for being made of glass. At this point he probably puts together 1 solid season where he stays on the field for 125 games. Dunno when that will be though.

Droford 07-06-2014 10:41 PM

He was pretty close to being forced out of baseball due to injuries so I'm fairly confident he won't suddenly not be plagued by injuries.

Frank Drebin 07-06-2014 10:50 PM

Droford already pissed about losing him.

Droford 07-06-2014 11:02 PM

Not really. The O's didn't have a spot for him and even if they did, it would have probably ended with him getting hurt again. Good for him if he can keep healthy, it does suck he ended up in the division though.

They may have just taken the best deal available. That, and with all the middle infield depth they have, they may be able to move Castro for some pitching.

Nicky Fives 07-07-2014 06:08 PM

Jays are hurting big time, which is a shame because they were onto something.....

Damian Rey 07-08-2014 10:09 PM

Padres GM search continues, as Kim Ng has been getting quite the pub here recently. She does seem incredibly qualified, much the way Jed was very much qualified when he interviewed/took the job.

Of the current list of candidates, I like the Marlins' Beinfest, Logan White of the Dodgers, and Ng. My two favorite candidates, Jason McLeod and David Forst have bowed out of contention, so those are the three the Padres are left with that I consider ideal hires, for a number of reasons.

I think Ng is hungry. Regardless that she's a woman and the hire would be shattering the current glass ceiling, she has an amazing track record, is clearly hungry for the job considering she's been interviewed multiple times (including by the Padres), and could be the right mind for the job.

Bad News Gertner 07-08-2014 10:21 PM

Ng Nog.

Droford 07-08-2014 10:47 PM

Former Oriole (kind of) Tsuyoshi Wada pitched well for the Cubs. Surprise.

Frank Drebin 07-08-2014 11:37 PM

Trade him back to you for Machado. Cubs need some infield help in their minor league system.

Droford 07-08-2014 11:39 PM

You can have Ryan Flaherty back (rule 5 pick from the Cubs). Might even throw in some baseball cards.

That Dodgers/Tigers game last night was a lot of fun. JV got torched early for a 5-spot in the first inning, then it was all Detroit. 20 hits last night, no HRs. No VMart either. Fuckin' JD Martinez is on fire right now.

Emperor Smeat 07-09-2014 06:53 PM

Either Red Sox are about to give up on the season or are planning on a bunch of trades soon.

Starting 5 rookies for tonight's game and probably staying that way till the break.

He's out 6 weeks for rehab according to reports.

Frank Drebin 07-11-2014 08:48 AM

The Tanaka injury is another shit thing for baseball. The whole idea of pitching injuries is alarming. Seems like everyone has a ligament injury at some point. So many reasons for it. Max effort every pitch. Throwing sliders at too young an age. Too many pitches thrown in a whole life...reasons are endless.

At the end of the day with all these possibly pre existing conditions that put stress on the arm/elbow, what's an mlb team to do? Tanaka threw an average of 105 pitches this year. Should the yanks have been more cautious? Should the Rays not have David Price throw 110 pitches every game? I dunno.

Tanaka was throwing 150+ (upwards of 220) innings a year since the age of 18 in japan. The thing that saved his arm there was 6 days between starts. Kind of funny hearing everyone come out of the woodwork saying they saw this coming because of that load on his arm but no one was saying much 2 months ago, or even back when they signed him.

As for the injuries, I'm pretty sure it all comes down to the fact the human arm was never intended to repeat the throwing motion of a ball 200+ times (don't forget warmups) every 5 days for 7 months. It probably comes down to who has the best pitching mechanics and can consistently repeat a good pitching motion.

poopfromweiner dude 07-11-2014 01:31 PM

You're pretty sure, probably

I agree. Drotherfordium has the inside scoop

ClockShot 07-11-2014 03:56 PM

Yankees acquire Jeff Francis and a sack of monopoly money from the A's for a PTBNL.

Yeah. Not the "big move" I was talking about.

Droford 07-12-2014 12:58 AM

Reimold left the jays game with a calf injury. Took him longer to get injured than I figured.

Frank Drebin 07-12-2014 01:01 AM

Agreed Droford. Seems like the bottom line is just that with max effort of the throwing motion, ligaments get worn out over time like a tire and need to be replaced.

Two more points concerning the topic:

With this being an issue, why don't we see more of the maddox, glavine, or even buehrle type guys? Are they forgotten about because they don't blow up a radar gun and never get enough coaching to refine their skills? Does a pitcher have to be able to throw 95 mph gas to be effective these days?

It's interesting to see how this is shaping the way rosters are constructed. The cubs are clearly banking on hitting being a market deficiency because they consider it easier to find a guy who throws gas.

Sepholio 07-12-2014 02:06 AM

So the Braves got a player on the anti-allstar team. Guess who it is?

Some All Star Game roster shuffling:

AL out: Edwin Encarnacion (TOR), Masahiro Tanaka (NYY), Alex Gordon (KC), Victor Martinez (DET)
AL in: Kyle Seager (SEA), Koji Uehara (BOS), Eric Aybar (LAA), Ian Kinsler (DET)

NL out: Yadier Molina (STL), Jordan Zimmermann (WAS)
NL in: Miguel Montero (ARI), Henderson Alvarez (MIA)

There could very well be some more shuffling tomorrow. Guys pitching on the Sunday before the game are no longer required to sit out but if they decide to pitch in the game they can only go 1 inning and are on a pitch count. Very possible a few more guys will pull out. If things stay as they are now, the first place Nationals will not have anybody playing as Zimmermann was their lone rep.

According to what I read, a red flag came up on his elbow. And that was the cause why the Astros knocked off some bucks from the deal. The debate if that is probable cause to do that is for MLB/Astros and the Union to fight over.

In case you missed it.

Angels acquire Huston Street and Trevor Gott from the Padres for Taylor Lindsey (Angels top prospect), R.J Alvarez, Jose Rondon, and Elliot Morris.

So they grab Grilli from the Pirates and now Street. Either DiPoto is really on the hot seat and is making moves to keep his job, or there's something bigger in play. Giving 2 of your tops guys is a steep price to get another closer.

Based on their production this year Solarte for Headley seems like a lateral if not a slight decrease. But Headley was really good 2 years ago and Solarte's been a career minor leaguer up until this year so it's not a bad experiment.

Not surprised at Peavy being the one getting traded. This season and last season he's been more miserable than good (although not all his fault).

Everyone else in the rotation either would have been bad deals (ex. Lester, Lackey) or too low in value because of injuries (Doubront, Buchholz).

Wouldn't be surprised if in the future the MLB sets aside a year or two for a special committee who just votes for Roid era guys. That way the Hall can get the big name players and the era itself gets official Hall status like every other era in baseball history.

Damian Rey 07-26-2014 09:30 PM

Think the Sox are going to have to deal Lester at some point. They're not winning, long term contracts have not been good to them, and with the Rays winning and Price not seemingly on the market as of yet, they may be able to fetch a king's ransom for him. He's having a career year in a contract season, and considering his career numbers, I highly doubt how he is pitching this year is the guy you'd be getting beyond this season.
