Russell Okung's contract contains zero guaranteed money. So he basically decided to take a long-term, big money contract over a lesser deal that at least included some guranteed money.

I mean, I guess I have to applaud him for being willing to bet on himself like that but for a guy with his injury history it probably would have been better for him to guarantee himself some sort of income. He could shred his knee in training camp and wind up never making another cent in the NFL. Very risky.

ClockShot 03-18-2016 03:14 PM

He was his own agent in the deal. Right now, he's in on a 1-year $5 mil. deal with a 4-5 year $48 mil. team option after that.

Pretty good deal for both sides, imo. If he proves his worth, he's here for the long term. If not, thanks for the year.

ARTICLE 1. REPORTING CHANGE OF POSITION. An offensive player wearing the number of an ineligible pass receiver (50–79 and 90–99) is permitted to line up in the position of an eligible pass receiver (1–49 and 80–89), and an offensive player wearing the number of an eligible pass receiver is permitted to line up in the position of an ineligible pass receiver, provided that he
wears a jersey vest matching the team uniform, with an appropriate number for his eligible or ineligible status that has not already been assigned to another teammate. The requirement to wear jersey vests that are appropriate for a player’s position does not apply to a scrimmage kick or Try kick, but any player wearing the number of an ineligible player who is lining up in the position of an eligible player must immediately report the change in his eligibility status to the Referee, who will inform the defensive team. Alternate numbers for players must be provided to the Referee and a representative of the opponent at the pregame meeting that is conducted 90 minutes prior to kickoff.

Titans are open to trading the #1 pick the draft. But they want the ol' King's Ransom deal.

Evil Vito 03-19-2016 04:20 PM

Supposedly last year the Eagles offered the Titans their 2015 1st and 2nd rounders, their 2016 1st rounder, and the choice of both any QB on the roster AND any defensive player on the roster in order to trade up for Mariota, and the Titans still said no.

Seems retarded on both sides, the Eagles for even offering it and the Titans for not taking it. They could have taken a stud on defense like Fletcher Cox and used Bradford or Sanchez as a stopgap while drafting a guy like Brett Hundley later and still having high draft picks to spare.

Crimson 03-19-2016 08:27 PM

I hope Cowboys maybe trade their pick to a team like Tampa at 9. Only if that safety is gone though, I'm not in love with Bosa. Ezekiel Elliot at 9 would be fantastic

Evil Vito 03-22-2016 03:25 PM

The Lions would have to release Calvin's contract rights in order for that to happen. If he unretires his contract is still Lions property.

Same thing happened with Barry Sanders. Took a year off, his agent asked the Lions to release him (presumably so he could unretire and sign elsewhere) and they rightly refused.

I hate that. No one should be getting ejected. The college game has got out of hand with all its ejections in my opinion.

#1-norm-fan 03-23-2016 11:39 AM

It should be a judgement call by the officials as opposed to just a straight "two personal fouls and you're out" rule. If a guy is going out of his way to hit people after the play multiple times, he should be ejected. If he happens to get called for a facemask in the first quarter and then sacks the QB a bit low in the 4th quarter, an ejection seems silly.

#1-norm-fan 03-23-2016 11:41 AM

I don't get moving the touchback 5 yards up. What purpose does that serve? Just a small way to encourage more scoring or something? Meh.

Evil Vito 03-23-2016 11:42 AM

Touchbacks going to the 25 is fucking stupid, especially considering it's impossible NOT to have touchbacks in a place like Denver.

#1-norm-fan 03-23-2016 11:59 AM

Oh, I guess it could be another way to encourage taking a touchback instead of running the ball out to lessen the chance of injury.

If that's their goal then just fucking get rid of them altogether. It's like they're only keeping kickoffs in just to appease traditionalists at this point but these rules make it pointless to even do them.

They tweaked the rule in a way ejections are probably still going to be rare. Original plan was for all personal fouls to be counted towards while the new rule is just for unsportsmanlike fouls.

Think the stuff Talib pulled in the Superbowl under the new rules still wouldn't have lead to an ejection for him as an example.

Moving the ball to the 25 will encourage kickers to try to pin it within the 5 so they have to run it.

From the really stupid news department:

A group of Patriots fans are suing the NFL over the lost draft pick that was part of the punishment of Deflategate. The reasons are just hilarious.

Quote:

From ESPN.com

BOSTON -- A group of New England Patriots fans has sued the NFL in an effort to recover the first-round draft pick that was taken from the team as punishment for the Deflategate scandal.

The seven fans include a season ticket holder from Connecticut who said the scandal has left his 7-year-old daughter disillusioned and a Florida man who said the NFL's sanctions have caused him stress and lost sleep.

The complaint filed Tuesday in U.S. District Court in Boston says the NFL made an "arbitrary and capricious'' decision to revoke the pick in this month's draft even though there is no proof the team deliberately deflated footballs in the Jan. 18, 2015, AFC Championship game against the Indianapolis Colts.

The complaint alleges, among other things, common law fraud, negligence, intentional inflection of emotional distress, and racketeering.
The NFL, Commissioner Roger Goodell and team owner Robert Kraft are named as defendants.

The Patriots and league declined to comment Wednesday.

The complaint says the league and Goodell relied on "false premises and biased `investigations''' in handing down punishment, which also included a $1 million fine and a four-game suspension for quarterback Tom Brady. Brady's suspension remains under appeal.

The suit criticizes Kraft for not fighting the league's punishments harder.
"Defendant Robert Kraft had remedies to attempt to get plaintiffs' draft pick back, but he chose his fellow billionaire owners above the plaintiffs and fellow fans,'' the suit said.

Sports law experts tell the Boston Herald the suit is a Hail Mary because fans don't have standing in the matter.

"Paying for a ticket to watch the Patriots play isn't interfered with by the team losing a draft pick or two,'' said Michael McCann, a sports law professor at the University of New Hampshire Law School.

Crimson 04-06-2016 08:30 PM

Bet STD is part of that group.

Emperor Smeat 04-06-2016 09:31 PM

NFL's report itself was pretty flawed but  at that lawsuit.

NFL probably didn't think the Pats pick was going to be where it usually is when they came up with the punishments but them having two 2nd Round picks can be flipped to a potentially higher 2nd Round pick with a good deal. Belichick loves 2nd Round picks a lot more than 1st Round picks based on his draft history.

According to several reports, the whole thing might not have been a random act of road rage but a premeditated murder.

The shooter might have held a grudge against Smith going back to when he worked as a member of the Saints security and for having a dinner with a cop who later ended up killing the shooter's father in a different incident.

Emperor Smeat 04-10-2016 09:44 PM

Misread when the dinner part happened since the way the article worded it made me think it was before the father's shooting but it was actually before Smith's shooting instead.

Location of Smith's death was very close to the location where the shooter's father died years ago. Also seems the shooter was preoccupied with trying to pursue his own football career until last year in regards to possible motive reasons.

Rams trade up to acquire No. 1 pick from Titans

By Conor Orr NFL.com
Around The NFL Writer
Published: April 14, 2016 at 09:05 a.m.
Updated: April 14, 2016 at 09:40 a.m.

In a stunning move that shakes up the top of the draft and almost ensures that the Rams will be starting a rookie quarterback in 2016, the Titans have traded the No. 1 pick in the 2016 NFL Draft to Los Angeles, both teams announced Thursday morning.

The Rams, previously selecting at No. 15, are the lowest-picking team in NFL history to trade up to the No. 1 spot. The move, however, did not come cheap.

It is essentially the Rams' karmic payback for fleecing the Redskins back in 2012 for a treasure trove of picks that led to the selection of Robert Griffin III. The terms are as follows: Tennessee gets: Rams' first-round pick (2016), two second-round picks (2016) third-round pick (2016), first-round pick (2017), third-round pick (2017).

Rams get: Titans' first-overall pick (2016), fourth-round pick (2016), sixth-round pick (2016).

The acquisition has to be seen as a coup for new Titans general manager Jon Robinson. Already equipped with his quarterback of the future -- Marcus Mariota -- there were needs across the board that can now be addressed immediately. This year's draft has been viewed as one of the deepest for certain positions in half a decade, and the Titans now have the chance to fill several holes instead of one.

The Rams, on the other hand, are taking a gigantic risk. Prepping for the first season in Los Angeles, the team wanted to arrive on scene with a new face of the franchise. It is almost a guarantee that the Rams will end up with either Carson Wentz or Jared Goff. NFL Media's Albert Breer reports the Rams already have conducted on-campus workouts with both QBs. They likely made the move fearing that the quarterback-needy Browns would take their preferred choice at No. 2.

"It is not often that you have the number one overall pick and we hope to not be in this position again, but we tried to use that pick as currency to work the draft and maximize player acquisition," Robinson said in a statement. "Being able to acquire six picks in the top 76 this year and additional picks next year, not only helps our depth but gives us ammunition to move in this year's draft and next. I know we now have the number 15 pick, but I would say it doesn't knock us out of any player except one. We now have the ammunition to work the draft and acquire players that are good for this football team. In terms of timing, it made sense for us to do this now as it gives us time to adjust and make sure we target more players."

This is the seventh time since 1990 that the No. 1 pick has been traded. The last? 2004, when the Chargers dealt Eli Manning to the Giants.

Evil Vito 04-14-2016 10:11 AM

Don't think they'd do Pats/Broncos this early with Peyton gone and with the uncertainty of who will be under center in Denver. They could also do a Super Bowl rematch but I'm just not sure they'd start with an inter-conference game right off the bat.

Evil Vito 04-14-2016 11:17 AM

I just want the Giants to start with a fucking day game. They're probably due to open at home (last home opener was 2012) but they've started at night four years in a row now. I know the Giants always end up in at least five night games but my god.

Week 10: vs. Bengals, Nov. 14 (MNF)
Week 11: vs. Bears, Nov. 20
Week 12: at Browns, Nov. 27
Week 13: at Steelers, Dec. 4
Week 14: vs. Cowboys, Dec. 11 (SNF)
Week 15: vs. Lions, Dec. 18
Week 16: at Eagles, Dec. 22 (Thursday Night Football)
Week 17: at Redskins, Jan. 1

Well.....at least week 1 isn't a fucking night game for once. Having to play back to back night games and having a short week heading into Green Bay blows as well. Not terrible though.

Quirks..aforementioned Christmas game..back to back road games vs Giants/Jets at Met Life..really easy schedule before bye week..

Seems like the fairest schedule the Ravens have had in a while..no insane road trips like last year at least

Lot more balanced schedule in regards to where the Bye week is and the home-away splits than last year for the Pats.

Real estate broker Nicholas Goodwin has demanded $32,000 from Manziel for damages inflicted on the $4.5 million house.

“They were supposed to check out at noon. Manziel was passed out,” Goodwin told Page Six. “There was cocaine all over the kitchen table, and mushrooms were still out on the table in front of him. There was booze everywhere, broken glasses over the floor and a champagne glass in a tree. If they don’t respond to our demand for compensation, we will sue.”
I will be shocked if Manziel is still alive by the end of the year at this rate.

Evil Vito 04-15-2016 11:31 PM

The Titans are already trying to trade back into the Top 10, and the Browns want out of the #2 spot.

Somewhere, you can hear writers all over the country ripping up the mock drafts they've just completed to account for the Rams trade.

Browns trade the # 2 pick to the Eagles.

Evil Vito 04-20-2016 03:05 PM

christ...first the Rams and now this. I don't understand it at all.

Feels like the kind of trade you make for a no-doubt, sure-thing guy like Andrew Luck or something. Neither Goff or Wentz seem worth what was given up to get them.

Crimson 04-20-2016 08:56 PM

Rams doing it makes sense, seems they're just a QB away from being a playoff team.

Eagles tho idk, they have more holes to fill

Sick of playing the Giants in week one. Go away, Giants.

#1-norm-fan 04-20-2016 09:09 PM

I know it's cool to start the season with a big rivalry and the game is usually great/down to the wire... but change it up a little. Jeez.

2nd time he's been busted this year with the previous just being a fine worth four games.

Jake Roberts wants to fix Johnny Football. Somehow I think its end with Jake back on drugs.

Seems like the Rams had to give up a he'll of a lot more for 1st than the Eagles did for the 2nd.
