I'm looking forward to Leeds ending Luton's 100% record on Saturday.

:'(

Londoner 08-10-2005 09:51 PM

I'm hoping Luton get promoted. My dad supports them, would be really strange seeing them in the premiership.

Chavo Classic 08-11-2005 08:19 AM

Morientes has been recalled into the Spanish squad along with Alonso, Garcia and Reina. Good news for Liverpool as his can only do wonders for his confidence as he hasn't been in the squad for over a year and his brace on wednesday proved he's still got it.

also, although they are bigger underachievers than ourselves, Spain for the 2006 World Cup anyone?

Doink 08-11-2005 09:06 AM

the words hell and no come to mind. the world cup has brazil written all over it!

People say that everytime, 'spain for the world cup 'spain for the euro championships' they may have good individual players, but as a team they're aload of shit.

Indeed.

Chavo Classic 08-11-2005 11:36 AM

Then again our squad isn't looking too bad. With the exception of Mr Crouch, the players who are potentially going over the Germany are about as good as any England team since Italia 90.

Lets hope for a semi at least

Apart from that friendly against England, when the Spanish lads passed rings around them.

Any team who can boast Xavi Hernandez and Xabi Alonso in central midfield has a chance. They can just go 1-0 up then keep the ball for the rest of the game.

Nah, no point even talking about Spain winning it, they'll only blow it again. Though to be fair, they were screwed against South Korea in 2002.

England have a great chance of winning it next year, or would do if they had a manager with some tactical and motivational know-how.

Was that friendly between england/spain the one with all the racist chants stuff?

They definately got screwed against korea though, but they've had plenty of other chances to win tournaments and they always blow it.

England always have a chance, it would help though if the manager wasn't only in it for the money.

WHY THE FUCK IS HE THERE?!?!

Oh, probably cos we don't have anyone better. :o

Seriously though, should be interesting seeing how Ahmed Elrich goes for Fulham this year. I rate the lad, hopefully he can replace Emerton at right-mid in the national team.

yianni 08-13-2005 12:24 PM

Also, lol @ abusing Elrich to his face whilst he was taking a corner in front of me about a year ago when he was playing for Parramatta against South Melbourne, and now seeing him playing in the Premiership. :o

Cactus Sid 08-13-2005 02:19 PM

Fuck sake, we should've won that game, they were shit

We made so many simple little errors that if we'd not made, we would've buried them 5-0. We had so many good things about the performance, but no killer touch. We shoved Cisse out on the wing, when he should've been in the middle, and we took off Morientes when we need his presence.

Lord only knows why we are selling Baros, we better be getting Owen, because there is no excuse for selling him.

We need a right winger signed and sealed by next saturday, and we certainly need a centre back, because as great as Hyypia is in the air and at tackling, his lack of pace is gonna be a liability by the end of the season.

Benitez, Moores and Parry need to sort themselves out and conjur some money out of thin air ASAP.

I dropped a load of the players on my subs bench, for players who would probably be better, and a couple in my first 11, and then they took 16 points off.....which will be deducted next week.....

Ref was an absolute joke today. I'm not saying we were going to win at all or even that the result was going to be different but he made some shocking simple errors and the sending off of Jenas was a fucking joke.

Did Jenas get the ball - Yes. Did he take him from behind - No. Was it two footed - No. Could the Ref even see - No.

Absolutely baffling. Lets hope it gets over turned.

Bixente 08-14-2005 01:54 PM

Arsenal totally dominated the possession, but rarely looked threatening - like the Chelsea game. Arsenal have problems when the opposition parks the bus in front of the goal, and I couldn't see a goal coming.

Aliaksandr Hleb was outstanding, and has already settled into the team - he could've scored too. Surely, he has to start against Chelski.

Wengerland 08-14-2005 02:14 PM

Darren Bent has replaced Andrew Johnson in the England squad too, which isn't a bad choice.

Londoner 08-14-2005 06:07 PM

Whats up with all the hate for wigan in this thread? They were unlucky and played well, so what if they're supported well financially?I don't see why that should be held against them, they have a good manager i think. The only thing i hold against them is that most of the fans aren't real football fans, but that is nothing to do with the team, i hope they do well.

As for newcastle, i didn't see much of the game today(just some of the highlights) but from what ive heard the ref once again showed us that the refs do infact give decisions in favour of the big three in the premiership, it's so obvious these days it not even funny anymore. I'm glad it wasn't a 5-0 thrashing or anything though.

Alright then. By the way, anyone know the current tpww league standings?I'm 13th in the overall fantasy football league, so i imagine i'm near the top of this one.I can't login at the moment though because it says 'there are too many members logged in' which is ridiculous.

Ogen 08-14-2005 07:08 PM

If your who I think you are your joint top on 30 points.

Wengerland 08-14-2005 07:10 PM

I've got nothing against Wigan as a team either, they did well and were unlucky in the end, but it's the fact that they gained so many "fans" just because they're in the premiership. They probably more than doubled their average attendance from last year, and i'd have thought watching your side rape teams on the way to promotion for lower prices wouldn't be so much worse than that.

But yeah, they're not as terrible a side as people make out, certainly won't go down as easily as most have said.

Newcastle looked pretty well organised for the mostpart, didn't offer much going forward mind.

That's weird, because in the proper league i have about 43 pts, though ive made 5 transfers now, and thats now cost me 16 pts, but they're for the long term. My team name is 'Chapman_FC'.

For those curious the transfers ive made are:

O'shea in for heinze

I love Crespo, what a fucking goal, sure did brighten up the journey home afterwards. Gotta feel sorry for Wigan, their fan were pretty good for part of the second half, they starts singing "Whats it like to be outclassed' and 'Who needs Mourinho, we've got Paul Jewellio". Then they started singing "here to see Wigan" to us so we replied with "here for one season" to them .

In the pre-match entertainment they had these four people walk round the ground singing pop songs, and they sung Made in the USSR when they got in front of the Chelsea fans.

Hernan

I wish they would stop changing the rules, the amount of red cards in the first week is not surprising considering they changed it, especially when they only changed it about a week ago i heard.

But yes there are only 4 teams that can realistically win the league, but that's the way its always been. And it makes the teams more competitive when it comes to the European cups. When people say there were times when anyone could win the league, they're talking rubbish. I hope someone who thinks that can tell me exactly when that time was because i sure as hell can't think of when it was.

Btw i just noticed how totally off-topic we are. Maybe we should continue this in pm or the sports forum?<!-- / message -->

I guess you are right but I don't see how it is working. There are tons of teams, yet only 4 can win.

Well what I don't get, is if only 4 teams have a chance, then what hapens to the other 34982947 teams? No doubt nobodys going to want to see a team who has no chance of "winning it all". Wouldn't they lose fan support, lose money, and if you're losing money what is the point of even having the team? It makes no sense.

Well what i didn't mention before was that, the top four teams get a place in the Champions League, the 4th spot is usually the one that mid/lower-table teams are after, everton finished 17th(one place above the relegation zone)the season before last and finished 4th last season, so if they qualify into the CL they will get about £30m or something i think, depending on how far they get that will determine how much of that money they will get.

Just incase i didn't make that bit clear btw the 3rd and 4th place teams have to play one match to qualify for the CL.

Then the 5th and 6th place teams qualify for the UEFA cup which is another european cup, only lower in status/money but it's good enough for the mid/lower table teams.

Obviously teams will lose money, but they do get a certain amount, but if you don't finish high enough you don't deserve the same amount of money as the champions do you?As for support, usually if teams go down they lose SOME support naturally, but most premiership teams sell out week in/week out. There are some well supported teams in the lower leagues, even non league football gets appreciation.I support Hendon who play in the Ryman Premier league for example. I also support newcastle in the premiership even though we havent won anything for about 50 years, and i still would even if we got relegated.

Rob 08-15-2005 08:35 PM

With all due respect to NF, do you think you are seriously going to convince any American sports fan our league system is better (even though it totally is)?

Also, its about building your squad up, the depressing thing at the moment is that Chelsea have a Russian billionaire who brought thme a couple of seasons ago, and they can spend as much money as they want and surprise surprise they won the prmeiership last year aswell as the league cup, it wont last though because everything falls eventually.

There are also other competitions for lower league clubs which i didn't mention, and they can get money from fa cup/league runs to, there's always a few shocks in the cups when lower league teams somehow beat the premiership teams, but i ain't hiding from the fact that there are deginately some teams struggling for survival, some have even collapsed. Most are insecure though.Ther eisn't really anything you can do about it, it's mainly due to ITV fucking up football finances in this country. They stupidly splashed out loads of money on the leagues below the prmeiership and though everyone would buy there new digital thing like sky have to see it, the clubs spent the money before they even ahd it and that's mainly why they're insecure financially.

No of course not, nothing you say can make me think soccer is better than football, nothing I say can make you think football is better than soccer ect.

I was just confused to how it all worked and it kinda went on from there
