That is likely the case, but apparently Parise legit was surprised Kovalchuk was getting benched.

Anyways, NJD is pretty terrible this year.

SaskatchewanChamp 10-27-2010 12:37 AM

Hopefully you guys had the opportunity too watch the Edmonton Oilers vs Calgary Flames Tuesday Night, what a game.

Gertner 10-27-2010 02:24 AM

Lol Colton Orr runs over Clemmensen, the puck him in the foot and gets credited with the goal.

El Fangel 10-27-2010 10:13 AM

Wouldn't be surprised if he didn't. There's a reason the Av's got Anderson.

A quick bit of information, Sheldon Souray re-broke his hand down in the AHL in a fight. There went any and all hope my Oilers had too trade this guy :nono:

I know theres like 6 of us that care, but Pens unveiled their Winter Classic jersey, hope they adopt it as the 3rd jersey, looks much better with less powder blue shit on it.

El Fangel 10-28-2010 10:47 PM

I would be happy not to see a Pittsburgh winter classic again, 3 years in a row is a bit much.

LoDownM 10-28-2010 10:51 PM

Yeah, because 2 times in 4 years is 3 years in a row

El Fangel 10-28-2010 11:16 PM

Whatever, still pisses me off. Montreal vs Toronto would be money.

Doesn't matter - the fact they gave the Pens another Winter Classic (2nd in 4 years) is a joke.

Maybe in Canada, casual hockey fans in the US wouldn't give a shit honestly. NBC gets a say in the teams, and they want the money and ratings from Sid/Ovie not 2 Canadians team no one in the US really care about. Not trying to be a dick, but it's the way it is.

And I'm sure you'd be fine with it if it was a Pens/Hawks or the Hawks vs anyone.

El Fangel 10-29-2010 12:46 AM

LoM, the problem with Sid/Ovy is that it isn't that exciting. They both get shutdown by the other team and basically you pay to see that and them being on the ice at the same time.

Not scoring a bunch of goals, as is what they are trying to see.

Toronto vs Montreal wouldn't be money?

Most if not all hockey fans in canada would watch, they would sell a metric fuckton of merchandise PLUS winter classic jerseys would sell astronomically.

Couple that with the fact that most americans bar Minnesota live less then 300 miles of the 49, I.e michigan, new York, boston, etc. And saying that Montreal/Toronto in the winter classic wouldn't make money is one of the dumbest things i have ever heard.

Emperor Smeat 10-29-2010 01:14 AM

Its all about location with these Winter Classics since if the game is held in Canada, then a Montreal vs Toronto would make the most sense in terms of support and hype as was the case with the pre-Classics outdoor games.

Since NHL needs to rebound in popularity in the US especially with the non-hockey hotbeds, it makes more sense to market the Classic between US rivalries or "superstars" to generate the mega-hype.

No need to worry about Canada or hockey hotbeds since they will watch the game but the NHL needs the rest of the US to care about the game as a way to boost NHL's appeal.

El Fangel 10-29-2010 01:21 AM

I agree there. I don't agree that mon/tor won't make money.

Actually, I wouldn't. The Hawks had their Winter Classic (which I was at) and I want to see it spread around. Leafs, Habs, Rangers all deserve to host/play before they start to repeat teams (since the Bruins, Wings, and Hawks already played).

Shit... how about the Wild/Stars @ Target Field?

weather vane 10-29-2010 03:01 AM

that would be brtl... wild and stars... give me a break...

btw Tim Thomas is a beast...

El Fangel 10-29-2010 03:09 AM

You know what would be cool? Throwback winter classic with avs wearing nordiques jerseys and Carolina wearing Hartford.

I would mark out.

SaskatchewanChamp 10-29-2010 03:52 PM

It's all about marketability, with this match up, Caps/Pens, you get a lot of the hype needed too generate a buzz. Not too mention, besides the game itself, ESPN is doing a 24/7 series too go along with the game. This would not be possible if not for the most recognizable faces south of the boarder were not playing in the game.

I would love too see other teams play in the game, however, with the state of the game in the south, I believe this is the best route too take.

El Fangel 10-29-2010 03:57 PM

Besides the original outdoor game, there hasnt been a canadian team in the winter classic yet.

I think a canadian/american game would be quite fun to watch on new years day.

Van/Det
Mon/Chicago
Toronto/Some midget team

parkmania 10-29-2010 03:59 PM

NBC and the NHL want the game to get as high ratings as possible. Like him or not, Sid is the face of the NHL - especially to the unwashed masses and casual fans. It's simply smart business to use him as much as possible.

I thought it was HBO doing the 24/7 show. I know it was mentioned locally on the radio that the producers would be trying to get some of the guys to swear as much as possible.

So lets see, ignore people who know more then 2 players and understand the offside rule to make as much money as possible.

Seems about right.

Dialogue of people watching the game

"Hey who is that to the right of Ovechkin"

"Says here his name is Niklas Backstrom"

"Is he any good?"

"I dunno, never heard of him, so I dont think so"

Malkin Scores

"Hey that guy playing with Our Lord and Savior just scored"

"Says his name is Malkin, probably another shitty player using Sid The Kid to look better"

Joey Slugs 10-29-2010 06:29 PM

You and I are on the same wavelength here, FA. The biggest problem with the NHL right now is that they are trying to appeal to the casual fans that just don't give a shit and losing more and more die hard fans in the process. They are hyping up the Caps & Pens - both of which lost to the same #8 ranked Habs in last year's playoffs - yet the Habs are playing in the Heritage Classic (a game that most fans won't even be able to see outside of Canada).

And the idea for the Avs/Canes Winter Classic would be awesome.

And traditional hockey fans would watch the Wild/Stars play because they would understand the meaning behind a game like that. Will it happen? Of course not. But it would be awesome if they did. Especially if Modano was still in Dallas.

OssMan 10-29-2010 07:21 PM

Some people here think Alex Ovechkin's teammates are Nicholas Baxton and Alex Simmons.

El Fangel 10-29-2010 09:08 PM

Enjoying philly v pittsburgh atm but wishing it was in philly!

Mike the Metal Ed 10-29-2010 09:20 PM

Habs-Isles is a bit dull. Wish I'd stayed up to watch the Senators 5-2 win a few days ago.

El Fangel 10-29-2010 09:58 PM

Hall and Eberle!

Londoner 10-29-2010 10:26 PM

3-1 philly should be game over.

Londoner 10-29-2010 10:39 PM

3-2 44.6 seconds left.

Londoner 10-29-2010 10:41 PM

And they hold on to win 3-2!

El Fangel 10-29-2010 10:54 PM
