The Mandrian was a cool ass villian.

No real spoiler, just an observation.

Kalyx triaD 05-05-2013 06:44 PM

She was pretty.

Shadow 05-06-2013 12:46 AM

Like her better as a redhead.

Very hot...smoking hot in fact.

Kalyx triaD 05-06-2013 01:00 AM

Clever.

Shaggy 05-06-2013 02:16 AM

I liked it but I really didn't walk away with the awesome feeling I had from the first movie. IMO its better than the 2nd but the first one is still the best.

I am curious to see how the ending of this actually plays into Avengers 2.

Kalyx triaD 05-06-2013 03:52 AM

I think it sets a status quo; about how the world feels after New York. Killian's remarks about why he did what he did was interesting (regarding his Thor reference). Things have changed. The bad guys may not feel a need to pussy foot around anymore.

I think we will see the president again in Cap 2, and Killian seemed like he had a Disney death, kinda ambiguous to me. Maybe the next time we see him, if he lived, he'll just be a mental organism designed only for killing.

I'm drunk now so take all that as silly speculation.

loopydate 05-06-2013 08:02 PM

I see what you did there.

Blitz 05-07-2013 01:07 AM

Solid film. Better than 2, probably not as good as 1. Lot more humour then I expected. Loved when the henchmen was like "I don't even wanna work here. They are so weird". Wasn't much into the increased Pepper Potts presence as I'm not a huge fan of Paltrow in general, and some of the stuff with Tony and that kid threatened to rot my teeth, so saccharine it was. Also would've liked more Rhodey/Stark duo time because they're fantastic together.

Regarding the Mandarin:
SPOILER: show
I dug the twist. Kingsley was hilariously in that reveal scene. I love how comic book movies nowadays have so much more freedom to adapt the source material, and don't see it all as sacred stuff not to be touched. I found myself liking Killian as the villain a lot more than I thought I would. Guy Pearce does great with it.

Now, that said, in no way am I absolutely convinced we actually saw what we saw. It wouldn't surprise me at all to see Kingsley return and reveal that the Master was playing everyone.

Kalyx triaD 05-07-2013 01:18 AM

I have imagined that 'Tyler', who may well go free as he was a hostage technically and did no wrong, probably tries to keep his fame and totally dives into the Mandarin character. For real. He does have followers, like minds don't know any better, or perhaps he can simply gain new ones by running something himself. Hell, perhaps he'll get actual powerful rings to wear - a gift from Thanos perhaps? There's a lot of places he can go, though he can rest as a perpetual comedic character in the MCU if he ever returns.

I personally would love to see him take his act to Asgard.

VSG 05-07-2013 08:38 AM

I would love to see that, or any form of 'Tyler' returning.

DaveBrawl 05-07-2013 09:25 AM

I guess I'll be the dissenting voice as I didn't really care for this. I mean it was alright, but I went in with low expectations after #2 and those were barely met. I saw Pain & Gain later that night and enjoyed that much more to be honest.

I guess it just seemed to me like it didn't know what direction it wanted to go.
SPOILER: show
I get the 'fake' Mandarin deal, didn't really like it as I wanted the real deal, but it makes a lot of sense and I have no problem with that.

My deal is more with the tone changing from dark and brooding to joking and back and forth every few minutes. Dude lost everything at one point and he goes from anxiety attack to smirking and smug. Then he bascally turns into James Bond and infiltrates a compound full of security with relative ease. Of course we also have the ending with Super Pepper basically bodyslamming the whole ending of the Avengers. Tony finally learns how to be a hero and saves everyone from an army of aliens and a God and now he with an army of his armors needs saving from one man.

To me it didn't fit well.

VSG 05-07-2013 09:59 AM

coldhardtruth would have been proud

DaveBrawl 05-07-2013 10:21 AM

I hope so.

Kalyx triaD 05-07-2013 02:56 PM

Let's not forget the deliciously random TV show opening style end credits.

DaveBrawl 05-07-2013 03:05 PM

I did love those.

Corporate CockSnogger 05-07-2013 03:33 PM

Guys, you're all forgetting to mention the appearance of Martin Skrtel celebrating a Liverpool goal.

Nowhere Man 05-07-2013 04:15 PM

I just spent most of my morning and early afternoon putting together a full review for Iron Man 3 on my blog.

The short version? I liked it, but I didn't think they did anywhere near enough with they had available. It could have been really genuinely great, but instead, it was just good. Fun, but that's about it.

The long version is right here.

McLegend 05-07-2013 08:49 PM

Are the chances good that Robert Downey Jr. comes back for The Avengers?

loopydate 05-07-2013 08:50 PM

Yeah, he's under contract for the Avengers sequel.

Also, nice read, Andy. Always like seeing your long-form thoughts on pop stuff.

Kalyx triaD 05-07-2013 08:52 PM

Tony is so coming back, but the Iron Man series in itself is most likely down. After Avengers 2 it'll be cameos at best in Phase Three if that.

I'm reading he has fulfilled his contract with Iron Man 3. Right now he's only in talks about Avengers 2 and 3.

He's not taking a paycut either. He doesn't want to do a solo movie.

Kalyx triaD 05-07-2013 08:59 PM

He's not doing three, he's certainly appearing in 2.

A3 will most likely have an altered roster. Probably won't even be called Avengers.

McLegend 05-07-2013 09:04 PM

I think he will be in both. As I think most of them if not all of them will be in 2 & 3.

dronepool 05-07-2013 09:17 PM

Thing is RDJ is the best part of the MCU. They need him. They can't use other popular characters and without Wolverine or Spider-Man, we don't really have a super well known and liked character or actor.

And is it dumb or with this recent post-retro Power Rangers hype would it be a good move for Jason David Frank to be cast as... Iron Fist?

Team him up with Michael Jai White as Luke Cage, do a 70s-style exploitation movie of Heroes For Hire, and I'm sold.

loopydate 05-07-2013 10:44 PM

I'm still holding out hope that J. August Richards' "top-secret" role on the SHIELD series is Luke.

Kalyx triaD 05-07-2013 11:00 PM

JDF would be an interesting choice for Iron Fist, but I gotta bring up Ray Park who's been lobbying to be Iron Fist for damn near a decade now.

Shadow 05-08-2013 12:56 AM

Ray Park and JDF want to be Iron Fist?

....FUCK!

Rammsteinmad 05-08-2013 02:56 PM

JDF could still be the villain if that were a movie. He has "the laugh" going for him.

Kalyx triaD 05-08-2013 03:25 PM

Don't think a cheesy evil kid's show laugh would translate to a Marvel movie.

The Jayman 05-08-2013 06:23 PM

Sure it can with a little movie magic

DaveBrawl 05-08-2013 07:06 PM

If they can make a dude breathing fire not seem outrageous surely they can work with a cheesy laugh.

Kalyx triaD 05-08-2013 07:11 PM

Degrees, man, there are degrees.

Swiss Ultimate 05-08-2013 08:41 PM

I really liked it. A lot. Felt it was better than 2 (I didn't hate 2). Very fun movie.

Swiss Ultimate 05-08-2013 08:43 PM

They need to bring in JCVD.

DaveBrawl 05-08-2013 09:06 PM

Would love that so much.

Kalyx triaD 05-08-2013 09:27 PM

Who would he play, I wonder....

DaveBrawl 05-08-2013 09:53 PM

Iron Man. Dump Downey.

Swiss Ultimate 05-09-2013 08:06 AM

It would be meta if JCVD played himself in the Marvel Universe and was making an Iron Man movie with John Woo or something.
