Monday Night Combat. Surprise of the Summer.

#BROKEN Hasney 08-14-2010 01:42 AM

Surprise? Game has looked fucking awesome all the way through development.

#BROKEN Hasney 08-14-2010 01:46 AM

Also Kalyx, Sega have told you to stop being excited for Sonic Colors.

Quote:

Wow Sega, way to absolutely kill the good grace your game has earned! Sonic Colors' lead designer, Takashi Iizuka, has said that anybody who liked Sonic back in the Genesis days should stop looking forward to the upcoming Wii game, reiterating the previous message that Colors is for children in no uncertain terms.

"We know there are sometimes opinions about control from core gamers, but we're intending Sonic Colors to be played by children of probably between six and twelve years-old," he explains. "So, with Sonic Colors we have aimed to make a game that everyone can control and have fun in. So, it's not really a game for the core gamers. If you take the rail grind, it's something that's fast, not difficult but is fun to do and looks great. It's about making a game that's right for the core audience of the game."

Weird that he says that "everyone" can have fun with Sonic Colors ... except for Sonic's oldest fans. Apparently the "hardcore" gamer is incapable of enjoying Sonic Colors, which is an amazing PR claim considering the fact that so far, many hardcore gamers are more excited for Colors than they are for Sonic 4.*

I really liked what I played of Sonic Colors, but according to Sega, I should just stop looking forward to it. Fair enough, guys! I'll henceforth write the game off as a load of crap, since apparently that's what you want. Seriously, what a dreadful way to go about promoting your game.

Ok, quick show of hands. Who has Monday Night Combat?

I do.

I plan on getting it. The demo was great with a buddy, i can see the possibility of this being some serious co-opness.

I'll probably get it, considering how much I've played TF2 and DotA. I'm worried I won't play it, like I never play Fat Princess.

That's because Fat Princess is shit.

Took me 40 hours. I wanted to take my time with it, hence having it almost a year and only just finishing it.
Gonna start again in a few days with a new character and choose differently.

I haven't finished ME2 or DAO and got them at launch. They bore me. I know Requiem will want to take me hostage and saw my head off on al jazeera in the name of Bioware, but ME2 took most of the fun out of ME. And Dragon Age...I like the strategy but it just got fucking tedious.

What "fun" was taken out of ME 2? Not trying to flame, just a genuine question.

I liked the changes to the armor and weapons, as it means I no longer have to wade through heaps and heaps of useless inventory.

Between that and the skills changes, I can see why the rpg nuts would be upset, as it does overly simplify things, but the rpg elements were never the main draw for me.

Planet mining is more tedious than exploring with the mako, but you only really have to do enough of it to get your upgrades. And I like the trade off of less N7 missions but with more variety.

Kane Knight 08-15-2010 09:37 PM

Yes, but a lot of what drew me in was that it was a hybrid shooter/RPG. When you streamline the RPG out, it's a fairly standard shooter. Inventory was kind of the least of my concerns, but taking out skills kind of made builds boring. It also reduced variety. I can see why they revised the "ammo" system, but it was dumb. This story was less engaging, which is a shame because it was somewhat more original than the first. If they were going to take out so much, they could have at least given us more kewl powerz. Or something.

Verbose Minch 08-15-2010 09:52 PM

Planet mining is a lot better now, they patched it and it's a lot faster.

Fignuts 08-15-2010 09:56 PM

One thing I will say, is that despite the story being pretty good, it doesn't advance the overall plot at all.

it sounds like you were more into the whole 'loot' thing, which was completely removed from ME2. The skills were still there, and very important if you played on a certain difficulty (NO way could you beat it on insanity with Warp/biotics).

It wasnt a JRPG, thats for sure...but i dont think you should be expecting that from a north american company.

Drakul 08-16-2010 02:57 AM

Just bought Worms 3D (Xbox) for £1.99 online. I had it for the Ps2 when it first came out but, for some reason, my Ps2 hated certains games and the music would just jump and skip and, a lot of the time, the game just died on the loading screen. It wouldn't even read some discs at all.

Anyway, I looked online and it's compatible with the 360 so I can finally play it without random freezing. Although I bought Munch's Oddysee a few weeks ago because it was "compatible" and that was a let down. Yeah, it "worked" but the speech was completely inauidible which makes an Oddworld game unplayable.

D Mac 08-16-2010 06:52 AM

My PS3 just gave me the YLOD and the flashing red lights. :(

D Mac 08-16-2010 07:53 AM

Went to Sony website and requested a service. They offered me a new PS3 slim for the price of the repair ($150) including shipping so I took it. It's not backward compatible like my old one was but oh well I hardly play my ps2 games anyways.

Of course, I never expected it to be a JRPG. Weird how that works. Skills were stripped down, but whatever. The important thing is we've established a Bioware game is not a JRPG.

BigDaddyCool 08-16-2010 10:03 AM

In more important video game news, I just beat Assassin's Creed 2, just going to finish collecting feathers. What used game should I look for next? Mass Effect 2? Just Cause? Bioshock?

Extreme Angle 08-16-2010 10:51 AM

Bioshock 100%

Kane Knight 08-16-2010 10:55 AM

I think Bioshock would bore BDC.

I know people are gonna be all "haters gonna hate," But I talk to him pretty frequently.

Just Cause is fun and really cheap. The sequel is probably also fun, especially based on the demo.

Do you have Saints Row 2 Yet, Becker? I can co-op with you even.

BigDaddyCool 08-16-2010 11:06 AM

Well, I wish you well. Just thought of this now. If you buy Mass Effect, but it new. It comes with the ''Cerberus Network'', which you otherwise have to pay for. You get some free DLC and such with it, it's pretty cool.

Cerberus Network is a joke tho, innit? There's no much DLC that isn't pay.

alvarado52 08-16-2010 09:05 PM

There has only been like 3 paid DLC released so far: a costume pack, a character (Kasumi), and a mission (Overlord).

Cerberus so far has released a mission (Firewalker DLC), a character, and numerous gun packs.

So i'd say Cerberus has released some real quality stuff.

Kane Knight 08-16-2010 09:19 PM

I haven't played the game in ages, btu a buddy of mine booted it up a few days back and said a chunk of what you just called Cereberus DLC was not.

I'm not saying you're wrong, I'm merely indicating what I was going on.

Wikipedia lists 6 paid DLCs and one upcoming, though it does list a couple of free DLCs I was unaware of (Including the Firewalker).

I'd boot up the game, but I'm not sure I can be arsed to really check it out.

Verbose Minch 08-16-2010 11:02 PM

There have been more paid DLC packs: There's Kasumi, the costumes, Overlord, and I believe 3 different gun packs.

Cerberus has Zaeed, a gun pack, Firewalker, and something else, I believe.

In regards to what KK said, I think getting the Cerberus pack is worth it, especially if you buy it new. A new game is like 5 bucks more, plus you get a full character mission. I mean, the Zaeed character would be 1200 points without it, so assuming you're going to download all the DLC, it's already paid itself off.

The game arrived today and I tried it out. In under five minutes, while I was choosing the voices my worms would use, the game freaked out and froze. I'm done trying original Xbox games on my 360. What is with this game though? Every time I try and play it on any platform, it refuses to work.

I tried playing again and the controls don't feel as tight as they did on the Ps2 version.

Playing through it now for the first time. I can see where multiple play throughs would totally change things, as your origin story plays a big part in how you're perceived throughout the rest of the game, and playing good versus evil makes the game world VERY different.

Problem is though, game is 60 hours long...dunno if I wanna do that twice.

It does indeed. Totally fucking worth it tho. Better still that it has an expansion and a ton of DLC. Definitely get "Warden's Keep", "Return to Ostagar" and "The Stone Prisoner". Not only do they give you lots of really helpful shit for the main game (including an extra character), they are just really awesome quests in general. This is my favourite game of ALL FUCKING TIME.

You will want to, once you get through it. Plus, it's 60 hours if you rush through the game. It's more like 90 if you explore and do all of the extra side quests and shit.

It's not a technical issue with the camera; instead, it's apparently an issue with player perception, because the avatar's pudgy little cartoon proportions aren't like those of our more elongated selves. So people's hand-eye coordination in certain games "broke".

Nick Burton, senior programmer at Rare, says the new avatars will be a little more realistic.

Oh hell no. I think I might have to acquire a massive amount of money, use it to acquire the licensing rights for EWJ and the original Star Wars trilogy and then pay Capcom to do EWJ vs Star Wars and then whoop your ass as EWJ.

Funky Fly 08-18-2010 05:41 AM

Orrrrrrr, you could bust out some SSF4 right now and take a huge beating.

Monday Night Combat a fun game and serious contender for best live/rookie game of the year.

#BROKEN Hasney 08-18-2010 03:46 PM

What do you mean "With Blacklight up there?". Blacklight is utter unadulterated shit.

alvarado52 08-18-2010 05:03 PM

i think he means its ridiculous that Blacklight is so far up.

Kalyx triaD 08-18-2010 07:31 PM

Pretty sure I was clear about how terrible Blacklight is. Jesus that game is hyperbad.

Don't even know how you came to that conclusion, Has. You people try to hard.

The philosophy carries through from the top down, including an internal first-party division of Microsoft Games Studio dedicated to mobile games and a minimum hardware spec sheet for phone manufacturers that will ensure all games and applications will run the same.

"We want to give our hardware partners a chance to differentiate themselves, and a lot of people like to have choice in their handset…but we want to make sure when people build apps or games for the phone that it's going to behave the same on every phone," said Brian Seitz, senior marketing manager for Windows Phone 7.

"It helps having a constant hardware platform that is a minimum guaranteed hardware set when you're developing games with XNA," added Kevin Unangst, senior director of PC and mobile gaming at Microsoft.

Those minimum hardware specs include a powerful processor, 256 MB of RAM, 802.11 b/g wireless, a 4 point multi-touch screen and a sensory array (A-GPS, accelerometer, compass, proximity and light). WVGA screens will be used at launch with the option of HVGA coming later.

Unangst continued, "We're looking at this like: Call it like a console launch. It's really like our portable console launch in that there's a constant hardware set, we're specifically choosing the content we want, and it's about bringing all of those service features over."

There was a lot of skepticism floating around the Internet regarding the Windows Phone 7 Series and how much resources Microsoft would dedicate to making it a viable game platform. This week, Microsoft took great strides towards answering the critics. First, it announced a launch lineup that includes 60 games -- with more likely to be added. Then it gave members of the press a tour of how Xbox Live carries over to the phone, what features are being included, and how the gaming actually works. I sat in on one of these demos and came away thoroughly impressed.

The games you'll see on the Windows Phone 7 are comparable, and many times identical, to what you see on the Xbox Live Arcade. And in some ways, they exceed XBLA in terms of features. There will be plenty of standard games as well, such as Uno, but unfortunately only turn-based multiplayer gaming will be available at launch.

Games like iloMilo, a puzzler where you must direct ilo and Milo to meet each other, and Rocket Riot are titles that look and play about the same on both XBLA and the phone, save for the change to touch controls. Others are being brought on specifically to showcase the touch features. I got to try Max and the Magic Marker, a WiiWare game that will come to the mobile device at launch. If you haven't played it, think of Crayon Physics Deluxe on the PC, a game where you draw on the screen to solve puzzles.

Most impressive, however, was Crackdown: Project Sunburst. This is a tower defense game that imports Bing maps into the game to dynamically build levels. Freaks come pouring down the streets and it's up to you to build defenses against them, all in real places around the world.

The games I played all looked gorgeous and handled comparably to any decent iPhone game. For any hardcore gamer, it's the Xbox Live features that will likely make them want one of these phones.

Microsoft-sanctioned Xbox Live games on the phone will carry achievement points (200 per game), as well as leaderboards and other standards of the service. You won't have to pay extra to play these games online. Unlike the Xbox 360 with Xbox Live Gold and Silver accounts, there is no concept of a tiered service or any fees.

Every game will have its own free demo, much the same way as it works on Xbox 360 with Xbox Live Arcade or Indie games. Simply download the free trial and if you want to play more all you have to do is hit a button to unlock the license. "You shouldn't have to go download a bunch of free demos that you download and then have to delete," explained Kevin Unangst, senior director of PC and mobile gaming at Microsoft.

The company won't hold an iron grip over the Marketplace, however. Indies that don't utilize the Xbox Live tools and aren't officially promoted by Microsoft can still be made. "It's an open marketplace," said Unangst. "They can give them away, or sell them for whatever they want." Games that carry achievements and other Xbox Live features will have specific, tiered price tags similar to the Xbox Live Arcade. What those prices are has not yet been announced.

Though Windows Phone 7 games have the advantage of iPhone games in terms of demos, selling downloadable add-ons won't be possible at launch Unangst explained, "For the initial release of the phone, you're going to see that sort of thing through updates to the games themselves rather than standalone title content, but that is the sort of thing I would expect to see moving ahead."

Microsoft is hoping to leverage its Xbox Live heritage in ways other than gaming as well. Halo Waypoint, a portal for all things Halo currently available on Xbox Live, will be coming to the Windows Phone 7 as well.

Avatar applications will also be a big marketing point for Microsoft. Called gadgets, these are common apps you can find on any phone with an Avatar twist. All of them feature your Xbox Live Avatar in some neat way. The flashlight app puts your Avatar on the screen holding a light. The level uses the accelerometer to tell you if something is flat, but also puts the Avatar up on the screen swaying back and forth as you tilt the phone.

The coolest gadget I saw was the coin toss. Here the coin has a 2D outline of your Avatars face on it for "heads". And if you look close enough, you can see your Gamerscore etched into the coin as well. (OMG!!)

I'd be pretty excited about picking up a Windows Phone 7 capable device later this year if I wasn't already locked into a contract with my iPhone. One thing is certain here: Apple will soon have some serious competition in the gaming space.

Emperor Smeat 08-18-2010 08:43 PM

So basically Microsoft wants to make their version of the "iPod Touch/iPhone" similar to Apple and recently Sony (based on their rumored plans).

At the same time, everyone is doubting Microsoft Game Studios ability to make games seeing as they dropped support from PC to focus on Xbox while dropping studios during middle Xbox 360 years and lagging support of Games for Windows brand.

Kalyx triaD 08-18-2010 08:47 PM

Don't get how smart phones got to this point but whatever.

LoDownM 08-19-2010 06:14 PM

NHL 11 demo is out. Love the changes made between this year and last, presentation is much better imo.

Emperor Smeat 08-19-2010 07:17 PM

PSP2 rumored to have multi-touch controls but instead of being located on the front like the Nintendo DS, it would be located on the back. Most likely won't have a 2nd analog stick/numb regardless if there is touch pad or not but it could rise in price to an Apple product range.

Beyond Good & Evil 2 might pull a Duke Nukem Forever for development time since Ubisoft won't just toss money around to fund the game like the 1st one while also making sure the game is good enough to not be another flop. They want the game to have something unique similar to how Splinter Cell and Assassin's Creed had new things unlike other games.
