Thinking about starting to play this. Never played an MMORPG before. It all looks confusing, with the lingo you all use and whatnot. I did play Asheron's Call for like 5 min back in the day.
Few questions, I read the first few pages of this thread but:

So basically, in simplest terms, it's like Fable, in a way. Not that Fable was all that good but just style and stuff?
There are quests and whatnot, but you don't have to do them if you don't want, you can just walk around towns and stuff?
Plus there's a ton of other people playing with you. So you can randomly ask someone if they want to go kill some monsters or whatever? Or are there certain rules to teaming up with people? Or say, if you're alone and end up being outnumbered and one of your friends you know is online playing (of which I have none that play this but anyway), but they are a far distance from you, can you contact them and ask them to come help you out?

The way you all talk about it makes it sound real fun but I dunno. Sounds confusing to me, with all the different species and characters.

I've looked for a free trial version but can't find one anywhere, even the official site. if there is a trial at all. I'm prolly blind. I'd like to test it out first. EDIT: Just read on another site there is a 14 day trial in the Sept PC Gamer. :-\ I guess I'll have to buy that.

If anyone can answer any of this, I'd greatly appreciate it. I need a new game to play when I tire of MVP.

Everything you just mentioned is correct. You can cruise about in the gaming world including towns and interact with other players.
Yes, you can ask some one if they want to join you on a quest.
Yes, you have kind of buddy list thing that will let you know when your guild mates and friends are on and playing.
Yes, you can talk to your friends even if they are in another city or another continent.
Don't let the thing about the races or classes confuse you its pretty easy once you look at it. It's just that each race as its own unique abilities such as Humans are better at using swords and maces and Undead can hold their breath underwater longer since they're undead.
The classes is pretty much the same just on a larger scale. Your class (Warrior, Paladin, Mage, etc.) dictates your abilities. I hope I answered some of your questions and if you have any others just ask.

Yeah, there is a whole world in the game similar to Fable, and you can choose to be on the Alliance ("Good guys" - Humans, Night Elfs, Gnomes, Dwarfs) or on the Horde (Bad guys - Orcs, Trolls, Taurens, Undead) and there are lots of towns designated for either side, or contested areas where you can fight with the opposite side (should you choose to play on a PVP server, anyway.) You can do quests, or just kill random monsters to level up.

Yeah each server (there are like 50 total) has thousands of people playing on it throughout the day, so there are lots of people to talk to and to play with. If you team with people they should be close to your level, or you won't get very good experience. If you want to contact someone, you just have to /whisper them and you can talk no matter where you are in the game, as long as you are on the same server as each other.

Well I'll give a short breakdown of the classes themselves for ya

Warrior: Usually a tank (keeps the enemies attacking him so they don't attack the weaker party members.)

Mage: Does a ton of damage through magic casting, but has very low health and attack power with weapons.

Priest: Complete healer (unless you choose to be a Shadow-specialized Priest,) can revive fallen party members and heal for lots of points.

Hunter: Really good with ranged weapons (Bows, Guns) and can tame a pet from almost anywhere in the world to fight with them and help out in battle.

Paladin (Alliance side only): Lots of armor and good heals. Can give extra armor and revive team mates.

Druid: A balance of some sorts.. can shapeshift into different animal forms. It's essentially three classes in one. It's bear form lets it act like a warrior, it's cat form lets it act like a Rogue, and it's normal form lets it act like a priest/mage sort of.

Rogue: Can go stealth and do lots of damage with weapons, but generally not a lot of health and armor.

Shaman (Horde side only): Awesome balanced class (although most think it's overpowered.) It can heal, revive people, do lots of damage through casting spells, and does a lot of damage with their weapon. Also can drop spirit totems that help your party by doing many things, including hurting the nearby enemies, healing you, making you stronger, etc.

Warlock: Casts curses on enemies to hurt them over time, and can summon demons to help in battle (similar to Hunters, but you can't tame random animals.) Also can use soulstones to revive a team-mate.

Hope this clears some stuff up for you.. It's a really fun game.

Oh yeah.. taking a break from my gnome mage to play some horde. I've got an 11 Troll shaman on Windrunner, so if anyone wants to join me, just make a horde char and whisper me on Arkanis.

OK so since mycheap ass has failed at finding the issue of PC Gamer with the free trial, I'm leaning towards just paying the monthly fee, which is what has turned me off of all MMORPG's mainly. However, I hear this is so time consuming ( I guess that's good since I won't spend money on so many other things aka DVDs, and bad for obvious reasons) that it's worth the fee, and it isn't really paying for the same game since there are always changes and updates etc.

I noticed Amazon has a 60day pre-paid card for $23 or so. Would it be worth getting that before giving out my CC number for the monthly fee? Or is it some rip-off thing?

You can get the pre-paid card if you want. When you register an account, you have to put in a CC number, but you don't get charged at all for the first month, so if you decide you don't want to play, you can cancel it without getting charged any subscription fees.

Check this out, it's pretty cool. I don't know if you guys have already seen it, but it lets you look at basically all the models used the game, in full 3d. You can even deck any race out with every armor set and weapon in the game. It's really cool.

# The debuff limit has been increased to 16 (from 8). In addition, the client will now display all 16 debuffs.

Warsong Gulch and Arathi Basin will now be level-banded as follows: 20-29, 30-39, 40-49, 50-59, 60

Losers of Warsong Gulch are now given a "Ribbon of Sacrifice" which they may turn in to Captain Shatterspear or Sentinel Farsong for a faction reward.

In the Battlegrounds, you will now automatically be resurrected by Spirit Healers unless you choose to decline.

Yeah, Team Rocket was our guild on Windrunner, we all named ourself after Pokemon. :D I was Scyther, and there was also Cubone, Ekans, Voltorb, Raichu, and Muk. It was fun but didn't last long. We even had a guild tabard that looked like the Team Rocket outfit. :(

Man my group ended up wiping very shortly in and then people started leaving so I gave up :(

Guild downed the first 2 boss's the other night when i went with them, wiped twice on the spider boss, 3rd boss, before calling it a night. No epic items, but a rogue in the guild got a nice +Agi cape.

So, I finally got my Reaper, and, since I got it, my fury specced self, has beat 10 31/20 Warriors, which is supposed to be, like, the best spec for pvp, and I haven't lost once... I dunno tho, maybe i'm just good, lol

Tony, Ant and I have downed the first 4 bosses of ZG, repeatedly wiping on the 5th. Nothing amazing has dropped yet, the best item being an 8sta/10int 6 mana regen ring from the first boss. I really want the epic staff that has 14 mana regen on it. That'd be hot. Eventually...
