I don't know where else to put this but the new She-Ra is alright. Doesn't really push any SJW malarkey other than certain aesthetics and character design. And everybody seems to be gay. Like, confirmed straight people seem to be rare. It's kinda funny how gay this world is. Probably why the population looks so sparse.

Adora's rival Catra is a standout villain. Adora herself hits all the tropes associated with being a chosen one, though still given a shocking amount of balancing traits. Not only is she not a Mary Sue, an episode pokes fun at her starting to think she is. Several episodes humble her, though that might be a case of 'Benching Superman' since given who her traditional brother is - she is still justifiably OP.

On the elephant in the room: A few references are made to Eternia, established as some other planet. And obviously Greyskull is in her morphing time chatch phrase. But no; specifics are not expanded upon on Eternia, Greyskull, or He-Man. In fact Adora is rebooted as
SPOILER: show
an avatar for the She-Ra power,
so she doesn't even need to be Adam's sister anymore.

The fabulous horse with the rainbow wings is back and I shit you not you will not believe in what way he will be used to satire, and who he satires. I legit laughed out loud. I'm not even sure he's actually satire, but I laughed.

As with a lot of content from female Progressive writers all the female characters kinda come off as socialite valley girls, but I'm not the target demo so eh. I'll live.

Decent show.

Kalyx triaD 11-20-2018 06:03 PM

i really wanna go on about Catra but that's longform shit. I really, really like her.

Sepholio 11-22-2018 02:21 PM

I've started watching SSSS.Gridman. Seems v weird so far. Dunno how I feel about it. It's like a bunch of anime clichés of differing types all stuck together. Fortunately it has one really interesting hook, so I'm going to give it a bit more time before I decide whether or not I like it.

Shadow 11-23-2018 08:07 AM

There's a fuck ton of Transformers References in the damn show.

Yes. And Voltron and Power Rangers. Its crazy. But the whole set up and why its all happening and the aftermath of each event...those things are very intriguing. I'm gonna keep watching it as it comes out for now. I needed some more current shows to watch anyways.

Sepholio 11-24-2018 03:12 AM

Starting Psycho-Pass now. I've heard very positive things.

Sepholio 11-25-2018 01:59 PM

Psycho-Pass is the tiddies. Love this show. One of the best anime I have ever seent.

Shadow 11-25-2018 03:20 PM

Gridman SSSS might be in a bit of trouble. Seems another anime animator is accusing TRIGGER of plagiarism and it's pretty blatant too.

Sepholio 11-25-2018 07:18 PM

Yea I just looked at the scene in question. No tracing but it is literally 1:1 the same scene, just redrawn.

I got started with it.

Then Netflix dropped it. :fu:

Never got around to finishing it.

I actually just watched this, and am aligned with most of what Kt's analysis is. Kinda funny about the needle burial on the gaydar given that people lost their shit about where Korra ended up or the supposed "homosexual agenda" of Steven Universe, and this seems like a "fuck you, we'll turn it up to 11!!!" response to all that. Hits every part of the spectrum from Project A-Ko undertones, to Kill La Kill intimation, to yeah totally Sailor Uranus and Sailor Neptune clear cut couples. That sailor dude is like the only serious 100% straight guy around, even with his over-the-top flaws... he feels like he was written to be the straight version of how gay guy characters were written to be in the 80s. Backing off, though, it seems kinda natural, given the fact that the ratio seems to be about 20 to 1. There are barely even guys IN THE BACKGROUND in the entirety of the show. And because of Bo's voice I immediately think of Wallow from Bravest Warriors, and as such, imagine he goes in every conceivable direction.

Outside of that, I did like the callbacks/easter eggs sprinkled around, like the Grizzlor cameo, or Razz making a comment about Loo-Kee "liking to hide". I was also one of those who was initally kind of down on the redesign; not because of the outcry of "where be the tits?" like many others, but she looked unimpressive from the promo pics. There was no scale. Seeing in scale the fact that she essentially She-Hulks and grows about a foot and a half taller, becomes meatier than Adora as opposed to just a palette swap, it looks a lot better in action than out of context. Also, here, EVERYONE knows she's She-Ra. It doesn't remain some "secret"; it is revealed to pretty much everyone at all times. Also, the transformation sequence seems to be a tad more Sailor Moon inspired than the OG source, and thankfully isn't done all the time.

To me, this feels almost on par with the '02 MotU reboot in that it makes the world and lore make a bit more sense. This She-Ra isn't a girls' "me too" for jumping on the He-Man cash cow like in the 80s. On that, as for the previous spoilery thing
SPOILER: show
it is possible in the future there may be that connection made, be it to Adora or one of the previous iterations of She-Ra, that there was some relation to He-Man. Hell, the Lighthope seems very much like Cortana as made by and in the image of The Sorceress.

If I had to make a guess this might be leaving the door open for possible crossover depending on how the next run of Masters of the Universe goes, what with the upcoming movie and all. Might be some wiggle room there to add a connection later, or leave it out 100% and continue doing its own thing, but it seems to be a deliberate hole left there either way.

Also, Hordak is kinda badass in a really understated way. He doesn't really do shit, but everyone is shook. They *show* the type of ability and fear Shadowweaver instills, and she "knows better" than to directly test him. He isn't flashy or speechy, but everyone is aware that he is in charge for a reason. I dig that.

I'm down for more of this, if they clean up some of the writing. Yes, I understand I'm clearly not the target demo, but the only problem I had with the show as a whole is how quickly some of the plot tone changes from "this show is for little kids, cut us some slack" to "kids are smart enough to understand and follow" and back again. On one hand, you have a 22 minute lesson learning bout of melodrama with something that should be easily solvable but, you know, for kids, so we can't make it complex... but then turn around with deep effects of manipulation and abuse that spans for the whole season and makes some of the relationships not as simple as hero vs villain. Seems like they should be able to manage that better, but it wasn't a total deal breaker for the watching... I mean it has some flaws, but it isn't like it was season 1 of Iron Fist.

Just sayin'.

Kalyx triaD 11-26-2018 06:24 AM

Catra is great. Bo seems to be the perfect concoction of 'Gay Best Friend Zone Lvl.Gameshark'. He appears to have all the hall passes a straight guy on the hunt would never get from females (unlimited access to bedrooms at any hour). Even the one counter point gesture with the prom thing was very clearly painted as friendship with no hetero signs. Though the one time later on they could sell him as canon gay, it's played for laughs and he's kinda annoyed/preoccupied.

And again other than aesthetics and undertones none of this is shoved down your throat. No pandering, no lectures outside of the usual cartoon PSA morality. She-Ra is alright.

Out of anime territory completely, but so did Sam from Clarissa. Dude had ladder access to his neighbor's bedroom, and her parents were okay with that.

Kalyx triaD 11-26-2018 07:53 AM

She never explained that one.

Which he'd have a point if all of anime hasn't done this at some point or another. The Akira drift, the Brave Sword Stance, other famous scenes have been 1:1 redrawn and nobody has raised a stink. What's about Gridman that's got this guy all in a tizzy?

I dunno, I think he just wanted them to run it by him first. That seems to be what he is upset about the most from his comments.

Destor 11-26-2018 05:28 PM

I haven't watched s2 yet

Don't make me pistol whip you with my dominator.

Shadow 11-27-2018 03:31 PM

Oh hey guess what's coming to Netflix

Eva.

Random. Oh and Ultraman.

Sepholio 11-27-2018 06:15 PM

Psycho-Pass 2 is also v excellent, although a bit shorter than I would have liked.

On to the Psycho-Pass movie. Heard they are releasing 3 more movies next year too which is awesome.

ClockShot 11-28-2018 06:55 AM

Netflix has announced they will be making a 10-episode live adaptation of Cowboy Bebop.

Shinichiro Watanabe, director of the original anime, is on board as a consultant. Chris Yost, who wrote the scripts for the last 2 Thor movies will write the first episode and will be an Executive Producer.

Sepholio 11-28-2018 08:13 AM

They better not fuck it up. Cowboy Bebop is the greatest thing ever.

Sepholio 11-28-2018 08:14 AM

Psycho-Pass movie is just as good as the series. The set up of the series makes it a really good fit for movies. Stoked for the next one in January.

Moving on I think I'm going to give Tokyo Ghoul:Re a go. My understanding is that the original 2 seasons, while semi popular, pissed a lot of people off because they strayed from the manga too much or something. I thought this was going to be a pure reboot, but it seems like a time skip and using that to change the set up of the show instead. I dunno. Hope it's good. I was actually a fan of the original and hope they didn't damage what I liked about the show in the first place.

Destor 11-28-2018 09:48 AM

they cant fuck it up. The anime exists and is perfect. That will never change space cowboy.

Sepholio 11-28-2018 06:28 PM

I don't mean it like that. I'm referring to the live action itself and that they better not fuck that up. I want it to be greatness like the anime.

Destor 11-28-2018 07:21 PM

Well...it wont be lol

13 hours condensed into...200 min? Yeah.

Fignuts 11-29-2018 05:05 AM

As long as they do the characters justice, I'm good with it.

Sepholio 11-29-2018 02:22 PM

I'm thinking they will completely cut all the stand alone episodes out and maybe the series will focus solely on the core storyline of spikes life.

Destor 11-29-2018 02:28 PM

Wait...series? I misread and thought it was a movie...this has more potential

ClockShot 11-29-2018 05:20 PM

Any Blade Runner fans here? You'll like this.

Cartoon Network's Adult Swim, Crunchyroll, and Alcon Television group are going to join forces and produce and distribute Blade Runner-Black Lotus.

This will be a inspiration series to last year's (underappreciated, in my opinion) film Blade Runner: 2049.

Sola Digital will be putting it together. With Shinji Aramaki, director of Appleseed, and Kenji Kamiyama who oversaw Ghost in the Shell: Stand Alone Complex taking turns as directors.

The Wrap broke the news, so here's a link.
https://www.thewrap.com/crunchyroll-...e-runner-2049/

Sepholio 11-29-2018 06:14 PM

I am totally down for that. Blade Runner is incredible and Ghost in the Shell is another of my all time favorites.

Sepholio 11-29-2018 06:37 PM

Continuing ever onward with my incessant binging of anime, I have caught up on Tokyo Ghoul:Re. It's ok but I like the pre RE stuff better.

Now I'm going to check out a new anime that recently started called That Time I Got Reincarnated As A Slime.

Destor 11-29-2018 06:50 PM

Ghoul had about 20 good eps and went to shit fast

Let me know about slime. Ive almost started it a few times

Sepholio 11-30-2018 02:29 AM

Destor. Watch it.

Only 6 eps dubbed thus far and not many more subbed past that as it is a new and ongoing series....but seriously.....watch it. I sincerely believe you will come back sharing my new found passion for this show.

I want this show turned into a game NOW. It is literally the PERFECT set up for a new take on the classic JRPG. You'll see what I mean.

Sepholio 12-03-2018 02:50 PM

I see the Hunter X Hunter Manga has been moving forward again. Hopefully he finishes it up this time around so the anime can start back up. I need to know what happens to Gon damnit.

ClockShot 12-04-2018 01:51 PM

Sepholio 12-04-2018 04:50 PM

Watching D.Gray-man now. I used to watch it way back in the day on Netflix but they didn't have the whole series so I never finished it. Gonna watch the rest now and the follow-up.

Sepholio 12-04-2018 04:51 PM

Random question I have always had.....why do so many anime/manga have names that make absolutely no sense?

Shadow 12-05-2018 03:45 PM

Japanese language is weird man. Just accept it and move on.

I mean I have no clue why Bleach is an anime/manga about grim reapers fighting monsters from beyond the grave but there it is.

Destor 12-05-2018 07:47 PM

Two theories (neither official)

1. Soul Reapers cleanse souls like bleach cleanses stains

2. Creator is (legit) a huge Nirvana fan

I think 2 is most likely true

Sepholio 12-05-2018 08:34 PM

Time to watch this weeks eps of Slime and Black Clover, then back to D.Gray-man.

And I don't mean ones that are named like Bleach. I mean ones that use made up words and symbols and shit as their title lol. One I have always liked that has a ridiculous title is s-CRY-ed. Like....wtf is that. That is not a translation issue lol.

Fignuts 12-05-2018 11:22 PM

I need Bleach to come back. Need all those badass bankais animated.

Sepholio 12-05-2018 11:39 PM

I concur.

Sepholio 12-08-2018 05:40 AM

Ghost in the Shell: SAC_2045 anime coming in 2020 to Netflix. Finally get a 3rd gig.

Sepholio 12-13-2018 09:30 PM

Finally decided to buy a subscription to Funimation. 6 bucks a month isn't bad for the simuldubs and increased quality over bootleg streams.

You might be vindicated when there is a new show in the future called Drain You or Pennyroyal Tea.

Sepholio 12-17-2018 08:55 PM

Found another show I really dig called Assassination Classroom. Never seen anything quite like it. Sensei may be one of the best anime characters of all time.

I literally just got done watching Record of the Lodoss War again yesterday. Was my first anime way back in the day and I love it dearly.

Blonde Moment 12-18-2018 06:22 PM

Heard about it on an old Adnd podcast and am rather curious how it translates

Sepholio 12-24-2018 11:15 AM

Uhg, found another one of those anime that is bad ass but gets cut short -_-

It was called Seraph of the End: Vampire Reign and was made by the same people as Attack on Titan. I personally find it to be about a million times better than the hype machine that is AoT.

Especially dug the art style. Kind of gritty, not as well drawn backgrounds, similar to Cowboy Bebop, but with super clean and well animated characters. Sounds like a weird mix but it looked really really good imo.

Sepholio 12-24-2018 11:18 AM

Originally Posted by Broken Wheel:

There is a short series of OVAs and then a longer series of episodic anime. Both are good but I found the anime series to be better. It has one of the most heart breaking moments in anime for me.

A.J.K 12-28-2018 02:29 PM

Episode 90 of One Piece right now.

Helmsphere 12-28-2018 04:16 PM

Still watching Goblin Slayer.

I mean Animation is sorta meh but I love the fact he only wants to kill Goblins and doesn't even have the slighest clue what any of the other races are outside of Humans and Goblins.

Fignuts 12-31-2018 07:21 AM

So my town isn't going to get the Broly movie, and I prefer subtitles anyway, so I just downloaded a cam version and watched it.

First impressions are this is the best Dragon Ball movie ever. It's a little over half the movie before any real fighting starts, but I was very entertained for all the set up. Lots of really cool flashbacks and insight into the saiyan empire and their relationship with Freiza. Some new characters introduced that I genuinely liked and enjoyed.

Broly is given a bit more of a personality. Not much, but the important thing is you're given more reason to care about him than the previous version.

Then the fight starts. And holy shit is it good. Forget about this being the best that Dragon Ball has ever looked, this is one of the best looking anime I've ever seen.

Fucking tremendous stuff.

Helmsphere 01-09-2019 01:49 PM

They added more showing in my town, so instead of a 7 and 9 pm showing, which cuts into sexy time, There is a 1:15 showing, so planning to go see that next thursday.

Kalyx triaD 01-09-2019 01:57 PM

Godzilla Anime 3 is out.

Fignuts 01-14-2019 09:31 PM

Started watching My Hero Acadamia. It's good. Very good even. But holy shit are there some serious parallels to Naruto. To the point where it feels like a straight reskin at times.

Incredible dub though. One of the few shows where I prefer it to the subtitled version.

To be fair, there is a lot of parallel with a lot of shounen anime.

MHA seems to have better supporting cast of classmates, though, and an emphasis on the reminder that they are just school age kids and will think and act like school age kids.

Emperor Smeat 03-17-2019 07:25 PM

Next season of Dragon Ball Super currently rumored to be starting this July with an official announcement rumored to be made by late next month.

Gray 03-19-2019 07:04 AM

Yeah cannot wait for that.

It seems to be going one of two ways, they could do similar to the previous Super-movie releases (Battle of Gods and Frieza) and make them into story arcs with Broly.

But I think this whole shit with Vic Mignogna may have stopped that dead in its' tracks.

The manga/comic book version though seems to be about some wizard who grows more powerful by eating planets' energy. I did hope the Broly stuff would have come first, but last I read Vic seems to have been thrown under the bus.

Kalyx triaD 03-19-2019 10:23 AM

Why would a Japanese studio care about an American actor getting railroaded?

Shadow 03-19-2019 03:22 PM

Cause he's the voice of at least one of their characters? Honestly, I don't think Toriyama gives two shits who's voicing who as long as they emote right.

Kalyx triaD 03-19-2019 03:42 PM

He's just who Funimation hired. They have their voice actors to worry about. Vic will likely be replaced in the new saga if all the drama holds. Luckily it's not like this Broly was very talkative.

Gray 03-19-2019 04:27 PM

Indeed he was not. But I don't think he was that talkative in the first series of movies barring the whole "KAKAAAROTTTT!" stuff.

https://twitter.com/funimation/statu...87396209770501

Funimation employed him for quite a few things, whether that Twitter is run by US or Japanese I am not sure. But without even being guilty of anything he was shafted by Funimation (US?) even though a lot of the information seems fabricated.

It is similar to how Sean Schemmel is Goku and Chris Sabat is Vegeta, they made the roles their own and became the characters. I am sure if they ended up having this levied on them there would have been a huge shitstorm.

Albeit Chris and Sean both nailed Vic as well showing him zero support, which I thought was pretty disgusting and my opinion of them did certainly change!

Fignuts 03-19-2019 05:06 PM

Rehashing the movies was one of the worst parts of super. Hope they don’t do it for Brody.

Kalyx triaD 03-19-2019 05:09 PM

Yeah I wasn't too crazy about how they just threw him under a bus based on dubious shit.

They'll understand when it comes for them but until then I hope Vic gets his job back.

I don't know this Vic thing goes back all the way till at least 2011 there's a whole Tumblr for it with an archive

I actually won't mind them rehashing the movie into the series. You have to consider that in the first run of the anime that the show got well ahead of the manga. The manga has finally caught up and pressed on a little bit further than the series has, but it isn't really far enough yet. If they work the Broly stuff into the series it would give them probably another 3 months or so of leeway in terms of the manga getting further ahead, giving them more content to work with before they have to worry about catching up again.

They'll understand when it comes for them but until then I hope Vic gets his job back.

You're ok with a sexual predator getting his job back? Or are you just ignorant about why he lost his job?

Kalyx triaD 03-20-2019 09:06 PM

I read the accounts (from sources most likely to believe victim accounts so no 'anti-feminist dismissals' or anything like that).

Sexual Predator is a tad hysterical given these accounts, and that's if they're true/accurate being that a few set off my spidey-sense. The hotel room meeting in particular set off all sorts of red flags as the story went on.

It seems in the past day or two Vic has been reinvited (After being removed a few weeks ago due to this whole saga) to the Kami-Con.

This has stoked up a few and some of the other voice actors pulled out "for safety".

Kalyx triaD 03-24-2019 10:29 AM

Oh yeah the guy's a loose cannon.

Fignuts 03-26-2019 04:07 AM

Finished reading Ibitsu. They really need to animate it. Hell, it would even translate wellinto a western style horror movie.

Netflix has announced the cast for it's live-action Cowboy Bebop series.

John Cho - Spike Spiegel

Mustafa Shakir - Jet Black

Daniella Pineda - Faye Valentine

Alex Hassell - Vicious

Fignuts 04-04-2019 05:56 PM

All those characters could potentially be translated well to a live action series.

The real trouble is gonna be casting and portraying Ed. That character is much more “anime” than the rest of them.

Emperor Smeat 04-04-2019 06:26 PM

Wonder if the live action series will settle the question of what happened to Spike in the end. The original anime series kept his fate vague.

Kalyx triaD 04-04-2019 10:15 PM

I doubt it will even get thru the center of the original series run. And frankly I felt his fate was kinda clear.

He's kinda...dead.

Emperor Smeat 04-06-2019 02:51 AM

Thought its only implied that likely happened but also one of those endings where its left to the viewer to decide like with Inception.

When I first saw the series, I thought he died but then read years later about the creator never set that ending in stone and isn't even sure of Spike's fate after that scene.

Watching One Punch Man.

Glorious.

One PUUUUUAAAAAAANCH

Seanny One Ball 04-21-2019 10:00 AM

I really love this show. I will be sad when I finish the series and have no access to further monster mashing.

Sepholio 04-21-2019 10:53 AM

Well at least season 2 has finally started. And if you like One Punch Man then you should give Mob Psycho 100 a chance next. Kinda similar type of set up.

Seanny One Ball 04-21-2019 03:51 PM

This is the only anime I have ever seen besides Pokemon when I was about 12. Bill Burr put me onto it.

Seanny One Ball 04-21-2019 04:06 PM

I like the bureaucracy of the superhero system and the moments where Saitama sacrifices his public image for the good of the cause. Mostly I just love how easy the fighting is and how hard his life seems to be. Great stuff.

Sepholio 04-21-2019 09:21 PM

Yeah the whole easy fighting, hard life thing is where it is similar to Mob. There's a bit of bureaucracy in the school leadership hierarchy but not to the extent of the super hero organization from One Punch Man.

Seanny One Ball 04-22-2019 03:55 PM

Well the only version on Netflix is live action and I can't be bothered with that so I might try Baki or something else.

Seanny One Ball 04-22-2019 04:23 PM

Baki was tough going. Too sincere.

Space Dandy now. May be too far in the other direction...

Fignuts 04-22-2019 11:43 PM

Baki was kind of ridiculous. The main character doesn't even do anything throughout the whole season.
