I downloaded it from one of the wrestling torrent sites I'm signed up with. You might find it on one of the "regular" torrent sites, dunno. It's on Youtube's pay-on-demand thing tho I think http://www.youtube.com/movie/once-i-was-a-champion

"not available in this country" so I can't see any info but I'm guessing it'd cost no more than $2-3 to see which is worth it if you can't find it elsewhere

Vocal front of MMA, Chael Sonnen has been in the headlines for several years for his choice of words for his opponents and also his legal troubles. Now, courtesy of the Jim Rome Show, Sonnen went on the offensive in describing a run-in he had with disgraced former Tour de France champion, Lance Armstrong.

Armstrong recently admitted to taking performance enhancing supplements during his career. Sonnen was suspended from MMA after he tested positive for raised level of testosterone. While Armstrong’s case represents a much bigger scale, Sonnen was still put into the spotlight of eliminating PED’s from the sport of MMA. Either way, the two athletes don’t quite see eye to eye:

“Why are they calling him a bully? That’s what I can’t wrap my mind brain around. Lance is a dweeb, the only thing he’s missing is the tape on the glasses and the high water pants. That guy couldn’t get respect at the local Honky Tonk in my hometown. He threatened to sue me so I threatened to kick his ass and the whole thing went away.”

“Look, I get it and I’m kidding but Lance did do some bad stuff and he was a jerk about it. Yeah, he hit me up with the whole ‘I’m gonna sue you’ routine and I hit him back with the whole ‘I’ll kick your ass’ routine. That’s it, that’s where it ended. I thought he was going to go through with the lawsuit but he did not.”

Whether you like Chael Sonnen or not, his statements will not cease so why not enjoy them and indulge in some of the most creative trash talking around.

Thanks to CagePotato.com for lifting the quote.

Randy Couture has signed a multi-year agreement with Spike TV and will serve as a coach for the first season of Bellator’s forthcoming reality show on the Viacom-owned cable network.

Sherdog.com confirmed the news with sources close to the deal on Tuesday morning following an initial report from SI.com. Spike is expected to formally announced the signing during a Feb. 5 press conference.

The extent of Couture’s participation in Spike programming is not yet known, but he is expected to appear on the network outside his obligations to Bellator’s reality show. This will not be the first MMA reality television show in which Couture has participated, as the decorated two-division UFC champion previously coached opposite Chuck Liddell in the inaugural “Ultimate Fighter” on Spike in 2005.

The debut date for Bellator’s new series has not been announced, but it will likely feature lightweight and welterweight fighters, presumably competing in a tournament-style competition. Promotion officials previously announced that the show will be produced by “Amazing Race” co-creator Bertram Van Munster. Bellator recently moved its weekly live event programming to Spike from sister network MTV2 and averaged 938,000 viewers in its Jan. 17 Spike debut.

A UFC Hall of Famer, Couture, 49, has occasionally served as a broadcaster during Ultimate Fighting Championship cards on the Fox network since his 2011 retirement. The five-time UFC champion saw a three-fight winning streak snapped in his final in-cage appearance, as “The Natural” was knocked out by Lyoto Machida at UFC 129. Couture had previously retired following a 2006 rubber-match defeat to Liddell but returned to the heavyweight division a year later to best reigning champion Tim Sylvia. In addition to his fighting career, Couture has also made several appearances on the silver screen, notably appearing in “The Expendables” and its 2012 sequel.

Dana's probably not too happy about that one. Good move for Bellator though. Really brings some legitimacy to the brand.

This is my new friend Enrico, a 13-year-old who flew to Vegas from Sao Paulo with his dad because Jose Aldo is his favorite fighter. I've seen him a handful of times over the past couple days waiting for hours to meet Aldo in the hotel and get his autograph on that glove he's holding. I finally bumped into Aldo's manager an hour ago and asked if he could help him out. Amazingly, he just called Enrico's dad right then and there and set up a time for them to go to Aldo's room tomorrow before the fight. Incredible.

His love and dedication for his favorite fighter reminded me of when I used to wait for hours to catch a glimpse of my favorite athletes. And I kinda thought, as I seem to do with everything these days, what if that's my son in 13 years just dying for a chance to meet his hero? I sorta wish I could be there when he meets his hero. This is why I love sports, and in particular, this one. If you're in Vegas for 156, there's a good chance you'll see Enrico today or tomorrow. Say hello and quiz him on UFC trivia. He's encyclopedia of knowledge. Pretty amazing.

Thanks in advance, Jose. http://twitpic.com/c0761q

MMA referee and judge Rob Hinds has worked fights in the UFC, Bellator and many other organizations. He also owns Combat Consulting, a company that trains and educates referees and judges.
In this article, Hinds comments on the practice of “playing the game”, where a fighter, usually up against the cage, will post a hand to make himself grounded, thereby eliminating his opponent from throwing knees or kicks to the head.
by Rob Hinds
An interesting phenomenon has piqued debate, along with the interest and emotions of the MMA community!
Fighters have been criticized and referees looked at closely in their assessments of what has been called “playing the game”. The term (game) is in reference to a fighter using a rule to their advantage.
In the Unified Rules of Mixed Martial Arts, there are two types of strikes that are allowed when both professional competitors are standing; but not allowed when one or both fighters are “grounded”. Kicks and/or knees to the head of a grounded opponent are not allowed at any time, in any position (within the Unified Rules). Please note that there are many International organizations that allow these techniques to be legal under a different set of rules.
Many have asked and continue to clarify…’What is the definition of a grounded fighter?’
By definition and explanation: A grounded fighter is when anything but the soles of their feet is touching the floor of the fighting area. To clarify further, if a fighter has a foot in the air and one of their hands on the floor, they are still considered grounded.
Do not confuse or compare this current definition with the old one (three points of contact).
This is where “playing the game” comes into strategy. Whether it’s a knee, back side, hand or even finger on the floor, leg striking to the head of the grounded opponent is illegal.
The rule comes into play in several situations. Fighters have become very aware of the rule, and are extremely savvy in using it to their advantage. Much to the dismay of the media and fans!
Whether you’re an avid or casual fan of the sport, it is now commonplace to see a fighter pinned up against the cage and put their hand down on the floor to avoid leg attacks to the head. Taking it a step further, they will also raise and lower their hand on and off the mat, trying to bait their opponent into causing a foul, which may be enforced by point deductions or disqualification.
Many referees are wise to this phenomenon and are being pro-active in their approach to dealing with the situation before it happens. Detailed rules meetings and discussions with the fighters before their bouts help clarify the rule and make a clear case of what is expected of them. Many referees tell the fighters that if they play the game, they are taking a risk (at the mercy of the referee’s call) and gambling on getting what they want out of the strategy. Many people may (and do) look at this gamesmanship in a negative way.
Keep this in mind. The rules were created to set parameters. Coaches and athletes in all sports will ALWAYS push the limits of those parameters to gain any edge or advantage over their rivals. That being said, “playing the game” is allowed. Like it or not…

Vastardikai 02-08-2013 02:49 PM

I think taking a knee to prevent a kick or knee to the head is fine. One could also argue that this position could be used to set up an offensive advantage by way of countering for a takedown of their own. But a hand down with their feet flat on the mat should NOT be considered grounded. I can't see a way this can be used for an offensive advantage.

Kris P Lettus 02-08-2013 03:21 PM

Nothing offensive about it.. The only purpose to dropping yr hand down during the north south clinch is to keep from getting kneed in the dome..

UFC welterweight Matt Riddle exploded with an anti-establishment rant on TRT and marijuana during his appearance on MMAmania's Verbal Submission podcast this past Wednesday night. Find out why he's passionate below.

FACEBOOK

TWITTER
UFC welterweight Matt Riddle has a right to be upset about the current state of drug enforcement used by the athletic commissions these days.

Just one event after Chael Sonnen was allowed to compete against Anderson Silva in the biggest pay-per-view (PPV) of 2012 while using testosterone replacement therapy (TRT) to boost his levels of testosterone in training, Riddle scored his first finish in two years with a "Submission of the Night"-winning performance.

The problem? Riddle had smoked marijuana two weeks before and the metabolites were still in his system. When he tested positive for said metabolites, his victory over Clements was overturned and changed into a "No Contest."

When asked about the current state of testing and punishment by the commissions during his appearance this past Wednesday on The Verbal Submission (listen to the full rant here), "Deep Waters" unloaded on everything related to TRT, especially in light of the fact that Vitor Belfort was given a free pass to take it for his second round knockout over Michael Bisping this past month.

His rant:

"Funny thing about that is steroids aren't on the same level as marijuana. You can do steroids in the UFC now, didn't you hear? [TRT] is steroids and you can do steroids as long as you get a doctor's note now. So Vitor Belfort just pops for testosterone and everybody's like, 'Oh, he failed."'

No he didn't, he has a doctor's note so it's okay.

And honestly, I think it's ridiculous. The reason why they say I can't use marijuana is because it's a performance-enhancing drug. Okay, I understand that. It's a performance-enhancing drug to you. Whatever. But testosterone isn't? Steroids aren't? And if you're saying I can't smoke because you need to keep other fighters safe or myself safe because I'm too high, don't you think you should keep others safe by not letting people using steroids into the cage? That's how I look at it.

And that wasn't the only item with which Riddle took umbrage. Not one to hold his tongue, he went into detail on his use of marijuana, explaining how it has helped him in his every day life while railing against the testing protocol and how "the man" is trying to keep Mary Jane down.

The glory continues:

"And on top of all that, it wouldn't bother me if they tested for THC, because I would never fail for THC because I would literally have to be that high when they tested me or I'd have to be high the day before. Instead they just test you for metabolites which you just mentioned which can stay in your system for up to a month after you're done smoking.

Let's be honest. It's White America, it's the big man, it's the guy with the money, it's the pharmaceutical companies, it's the alcohol companies that don't want want marijuana legalized and they'll do anything. They'll ridicule it, they've already had slanderous campaigns about it.

I've been smoking weed since I was 13 and look at me. I'm in the UFC and I smash people with a smile on my face. It's not a performance enhancing drug. It makes me relax. It makes me happy. Honestly, it probably keeps me from beating my three kids because they're always screaming and crying at me and my wife's crazy and you know what life's like. It's hard sometimes and honestly, I like to go to my game room and rip a tube and just sit back and relax and enjoy a 20 minute show, go out, see my family, take care of everything I have to take care of, and that's what I do. A lot of people think it's okay to drink a fifth of jack and beat their wife. I don't."

Wow.

Riddle will be taking his talents to the Octagon next Saturday night (Feb. 16, 2013) when he battles Che Mills on the main card of UFC on Fuel TV 7, and he'll be doing it without the aid of TRT (or even THC).

"Deep Waters" has professed he'll focus on his strengths instead of simply trying to win a "Fight of the Night" in every one of his bouts, which is probably for the best if he wants a lengthy career in the promotion. That doesn't mean he won't be trying to equal his knockout of Dan Simmler from The Ultimate Fighter (TUF) season seven, which he still believes is the most brutal finish in TUF history.

Fair or foul?

Krimzon7 02-09-2013 10:34 PM

it's the cotton companies Mr Riddle that has Marijauana on the banned substances list in america. Look that shit up. Cotton companies were getting squeezed by hemp producing textile plants. So in order to keep 'the touch, the feel of cotton' a commodity, they managed to pimp the government to make Hemp illegal.

SCIENCE.

Guyborg Santos wants out of its UFC contract. I feel like this does the UFC a bigger favor than it does her. He is an unstoppable beast and if he were able to get down to 135 and beat Rousey, that would put a damper on the women's division since most of the women in 135 dropped from 145 so they wouldn't get tea bagged by him.

Kris P Lettus 02-11-2013 06:27 PM

I'm hearing she wants no part of a fight with Rousey and is refusing to drop down to 135.. It makes no sense for them to start a 145 division right now, which is what she wants.. I think she is ducking Ronda even if that is coming from Dana White..

Kris P Lettus 02-11-2013 06:27 PM

Also, it doesn't help her that Tito is her manager..

I legitimately believe that she can't make 135 and was under the delusion that she would be enough of a draw for them to create a 145 pound division featuring her smashing a bunch of cans.

I don't think it's ducking Ronda either. In fact, I could see Santos beating Rousey via TKO because her stand up is vicious and Rousey's never really been hit. Plus, I believe Santos would have a strength advantage that Miesha Tate never really had.

The truth is that most of the talented female fighters are at 135 and 125. Coker fucked up because he created 145 to appease Carano, who hates cutting weight, and ended up stuck with Guyborg when Carano lost.

Kris P Lettus 02-11-2013 06:43 PM

It's def true about Liz's GnP.. Also, true about Rousey never getting hit as hard as Liz is gonna hit her.. It's all about weather Ronda can catch an arm or not..

Why did Carano "retire" after that Cyborg loss?? I realize she started acting and whatnot, but that didn't really go anywhere.. Having her drop 10 and come in to fight Rousey could be huge, buy wise..

When the champion of the current season of "The Ultimate Fighter" is crowned in Las Vegas on April 13, the bout will not be the main attraction.

Flyweight champion Demetrious Johnson will defend his title against John Moraga on the card, according to sources close to the organization. It will mark the first time a UFC belt is on the line on a "TUF" finale.

No venue has been announced for the event.

In addition, Miesha Tate will make her UFC debut against Cat Zingano. It's only the second female fight the UFC has announced and the first one that doesn't involve champion Ronda Rousey.

Also, heavyweights Gabriel Gonzaga and Travis Browne will meet.

Two featherweight fights are also set to be announced.

Bart Palaszewski will fight Cole Miller and Daniel Pineda will take on Justin Lawrence.

The remainder of the card is likely to be filled by contestants from this season of the reality show, which airs Tuesday nights at 9 p.m. on FX (Cable 24).

http://middleeasy.com/index.php?opti...:organizations

It’s cold out today, there’s still some snow lingering from last week’s snowstorm, but if a day like today doesn’t call for some sort of outdoor celebration in New York State, I’m not sure what does. Invite Kimbo over for a BBQ and rejoice, because the UFC has won their lawsuit against New York State and can now begin holding events there legally as soon as they want to. Let’s be clear, MMA is still 100% illegal in New York, but the UFC is not. From now on, when someone tells you they ‘trane UFC’ – there is actually some validity to their claim. You simply can’t ridicule them like you could yesterday and everyday since Adam met Eve (or whatever origin of species theory you subscribe to).

I’d like to pretend I followed this case closely, but the props go to underground MMA connoisseur, author, and all around swell guy; Jim Genia. In an article on Fightline.com here’s the scoop:

“ Zuffa scored a big win in their lawsuit against New York today, paving the way for the organization to legally hold a UFC event in the state almost immediately and regardless of whether or not the ban on professional mixed martial arts is lifted by the legislature.

In what was supposed to be a day of oral arguments pertaining to the State Attorney General's most recent motion to dismiss, attorney John M. Schwartz – representing the Attorney General's office – acknowledged unequivocally that the law prohibiting pro MMA did not apply to amateur versions of the sport, and that as per the statute, a pre-approved third-party sanctioning body could oversee MMA events in the state. The admission of the latter prompted the counsel representing Zuffa's interests to say that if that were truly the case, then there'd be no further need to pursue the lawsuit – which in turn prompted the presiding Judge Kimba Wood of the U.S District Court of the Southern District of New York to push both sides to immediately settle.

The statute banning professional MMA in New York was enacted in 1997, at a time when fighting in a cage was more spectacle than sport. But MMA has evolved since then, and with the inclusion of a plethora of rules and a variety of weight classes, sanctioning can be attained in nearly every other state in the country. New York remains one of the last holdouts. Efforts to have the ban repealed by lobbying the legislature have stalled each year since 2008; Zuffa's lawsuit against the State of New York, citing Constitutional violations, was filed in November, 2011.

Notwithstanding whether a settlement is reached, the door is now open for Zuffa – or any other MMA promotion – to circumvent the ban by utilizing one of the pre-approved sanctioning bodies enumerated in the statute. Those sanctioning bodies include the World Karate Association (since renamed the World Kickboxing Association, a.k.a. the "WKA"), the Professional Karate Association and the U.S. Judo Association, among others.

Only a few of the organizations listed are currently still active, and while the WKA has been responsible for sanctioning professional kickboxing events in New York for years, a recent letter sent to Governor Andrew Cuomo by the Association of Boxing Commissions blasted the state for placing sanctioning responsibility in the hands of organizations who have "failed to meet the health and safety standards that the Association believes are necessary." Regardless, under the 1997 law and by the Attorney General's own admission, sanctioning by a third-party organization is a viable way around the ban. In addition, as long as the law remains on the books, the New York State Athletic Commission has no regulatory authority over MMA and would therefore have no oversight over such events.

"We'll take it," said UFC in-house counsel Timothy Bellamy, who was present at today's proceedings. "We'd rather have the state lift the ban and we go that route first, but we'll know in the next two months if that's going to happen." If it doesn't, said Bellamy, then the UFC would use the third-party-sanctioning option.

In January, UFC president Dana White promised a UFC at Madison Square Garden this coming November. It seems that event may now very well happen.

For those that have never been to Madison Square Garden, have no fear about getting a seat because there are a mind-bending 22,300 seats available when the arena is set up for a boxing or pro-wrestling match, which means you’ll probably be able to get a seat as long as you’re not the 22,301st person to try purchasing a ticket. We know you’re better than that. On a more serious note, there’s still no guarantee that MMA will be legalized this year, although people are still hopeful the state will agree to regulate it, but according to this lawsuit victory, it wouldn’t matter. In fact, the only part of the lawsuit that remains unclear is whether or not elbows will be allowed – they are still universally illegal throughout all combat sports in New York, even in sports like Muay Thai. Time will tell if the rules will be modified, or if a third party will choose to ignore those regulations. Either way, we’re happy the UFC has found a legal loophole to bring MMA to some loyal fans who have waited far too long for their first local event.

UFC on FX 8 in Brazil to feature Rockhold vs. Belfort and Jacare vs. Philippou. I like those match ups a lot.

Guyborg got his release and has signed with Invicta, the all female promotion. They put on some good shows too. If they continue to have success, I think the UFC will buy them or have some deal where they use them like a farm system.

Cerrone is gonna face KJ Noons

Edgar wants to fight Cub Swanson or Denis Siver

Since Woodley got passed over as a replacement at 158, he is now calling out Jake Shields

Volkmann released? Kinda weird.

Kris P Lettus 02-20-2013 09:22 AM

He was 6-4 and ran his mouth about politics too much.. If he was winning, he could say whatever he wants, but he talked shit about Obama and then lost.. Only winners can alienate the UFC fans..

Next Big Thing 02-20-2013 02:03 PM

Holy shit. Fitch was released today. He wasn't the most exciting fighter, but you can't say he wasn't one of the most dominant Welterweights in UFC history based on his record. He'll probably go to Bellator and decision Ben Askren for the title.

Quote:

Former welterweight contender Jon Fitch was among the 16 UFC fighters who were released from the promotion on Tuesday.

UFC president Dana White also confirmed with MMAFighting.com that the following fighters were also let go: Wagner Prado, Mike Russow, Jacob Volkmann, Vladimir Matyushenko, Che Mills, Jay Hieron, Terry Etim, Paul Sass, Jorge Santiago, Mike Stumpf, Simeon Thoresen, C.J. Keith, Motonobu Tezuka, Josh Grispi and Ulysses Gomez.

Each fighter was coming off at least one loss in his most recent fight.

was hugely surprised at Fitch getting cut when I saw that but thinking about it, it's not too surprising really. Little bit surprised at Paul Sass also but he has all the time in the world to get back. Meh to the rest

Damn I bet the Brit fans are pissed about Mills, Sass, and Etim..

CSL 02-21-2013 12:54 PM

couldn't really care less about Mills and Etim, neither are gonna do much really. Sass is very good tho and a bit unlucky, think he'll be back. Mills just isn't very good and Etim's career highlight is forever going to be getting knocked the fuck out by Edson Barboza

Kris P Lettus 02-21-2013 01:21 PM

Yeah but before his injury (before the Barbosa KO) Etim was being touted as the next big thing at 155..

Next Big Thing 02-21-2013 05:44 PM

Dana White says 100 more guys still need to be cut. Damn.

if he did anything but become a dominant lightweight champion, that KO would still be the thing everybody remembered about him

Dana was on Rogan's podcast last night, good listen, some fun stories

Kris P Lettus 02-22-2013 08:07 PM

CSL 02-22-2013 08:08 PM

just Joe, Redban and Dana. Dana shows up about 20 minutes in and stays for the rest of the show (well there's like 20 minutes left but he's still there) Pretty much bang on 3 hours

Hendo v Glover would be brilliant, still think Shad would kinda squash Shogun at this point tho.

Shad needs to move to 185 dammit.
