I just watched the War Games match, holy shit... probably match of the year, for me. Wow... just so many amazing spots, great storytelling with the Strong and Cole blood feud, Strong fit in so well with AOP I was pleasantly surprised. I was also really impressed with The Undisputed Era and the match made those guys for me, kind of like how the inital TLC made The Shield. Five stars from me.
|
I don't ever watch NXT so first time I've seen alot of these guys in action. Really dug Velveteen Dream. Guy knows his character and he can really go in the ring.
War Games was fun. Didn't really care for anyone in the match but enjoyed watching it. |

If original War Games was so great then why is WCW dead?

Just finished watching the show, WarGes match was lots of fun to watch , sometimes the camera work got in the way though . Ladies match should of been given more time , Peyton Royce is a star.
Patrick Clark was brilliant , genuinely looked a threat and can tell a story , hugely impressed. Liked Almas winning the title, Will be interesting to see who comes after the title. |

Too lazy or incompetent to get rid of the one in charge of production or those coming up with the ideas for the terrible cuts and cam shots.
|
From what I've read it is KevinDunn who is the main person to blame for those cuts.
|
The Velveteen Dream vs CM Punk, I mean Alistar Black match was fucking incredible. Can't believe you have have two guys just wrestle and tell a story and it be just as entertaining as a 9 man mayhem main event War Games match.
|
Almas' sell of the flying knee was fucking great.
Happy for him. From a pure talent standpoint, he absolutely deserves it imo, and his journey to the title was actually a really cool story in hindsight. Was just hard to see the endgame at the time, when he was jobbing left and right. |
Loved the Velveteen Dream/Black match.
|
I genuinely hope they run with Almas for a bit. I like the dude. I think it's falling into place for him. War Games was fun, but I'm not sure if the audience that has fond memories of War Games wants it to be "fun." Match of the night, the more I think about it, was definitely Black/Dream. That was fucking tremendous.
|
Yeah, I had no interest in Dream going into this. Granted, I hadn't been following the weekly programming but that was my attitude going into this. He firmly has my attention now.

I see him facing Black at the rumble and retaining through shenanigans, and then black being victorious at the mania takeover. |
It's likely, but I just don't want this Black/Dream stuff to not go anywhere.

Hope they don't send Black up to feud with Corbin anytime soon

However, because there's the risk of one of them being called up... We haven't had a Dusty Classic this year to make room for War Games so I could see them tagging up now and be ridiculously over. Get to the semis or the final and tease another fight, but don't do it and then hopefully come back to it when one of them is champion. |

Finally watched this..... really fun show....
Lars Sullivan really good.... badass entrance and theme..... Never thought much of Velveteen Dream and thought it was an incredibly stupid gimmick...... but the video package before the match seems like it was a good build up, and the match was very good...... I still think the name "Velveteen Dream" sucks, though..... so even though I now don't think his gimmick is all bad, he will still "not go anywhere" on the main roster due to goofy name...... Womens match was good... Not a fan of Nikki Cross' new theme or Kairi Sane's new theme... (new from the last time I saw them)...... I don't mind Ember Moon winning. I think now that Asuka is gone the women will really get the chance to shine and trade the title back a couple times. Almas/McIntyre was ok. Not a fan of McIntyre.... like Almas as a heel, and this new braud he has with him seems to have breathed even more life into him.... glad he won because Drew is boring..... but not glad Drew got hurt.... don't wish that on anyone..... War Games match was a lot of fun..... |
Drew actually won me over in that match. He was keeping up with almas despite his size, and had some really impressive spots.
|
Drew looked like Nomar Garciaparra after he bulked up and then broke his wrist. Something was bound to happen being built that big.
Was Andrade winning an audible? |
Don't think so. He got injured on the finish, which was a super version of Almas' finisher. Doubt he was meant to kick out of it.
|
War Games was a hell of a lot of fun, a crazy stunt show and the effort was unreal, but there were a few little foibles I didn't like. The lack of babyface anybody loved or heel anybody hated meant that the reactions were based on spots alone, and didn't give too much of a shit about the guys or the feud.
|
It was fun but it WASN'T War Games. No roof on the cage.

My main gripe is Adam Cole in general lol. |
"Fun" is the best adjective for the War Games. I'm not sure if War Games matches are supposed to be "fun" though. The match obviously needs to change for the modern era, but I can understand why people would find it hard to emotionally connect with it. It's a bit like the Power Rangers remake.

It does go against what War Games was supposed to be. I think it's been a long time since there has been any real positivity towards the NWA and WCW by the WWE or modern wrestling fans for a long time. When WCW died, a lot of the fans of that style of wrestling just up and left, and either went to WCW or didn't return. Not many actually jumped to the WWF/E. I suppose it's hard for people to enter that state of mind as a wrestling fan, because they don't really understand how holy it is (myself included).
War Games wasn't an indy-style match. It wasn't choreographed spots and synchronized swimming inside a wrestling ring. It was a gimmick that couldn't end in a pin, despite pins being the stuff that lands you the pop, because by the time you get into that cage the heat is supposed to be there. It's the cathartic closure to months of tension. It's supposed to be more "real" than most other wrestling and the tricks it uses. Obviously we're in a different era, in a different promotion, with different talent, different styles, different philosophies (right or wrong), different audiences (for right or wrong) and different abilities. That being said, I can understand the argument, whether some are being facetious or not, that War Games should always be something different. |
Just to drop this here, SCG Radio returns this week to talk all things NXT WarGames and the 2017 Survivor Series. Spitballing about both shows, we discuss everything from the flawed presentation of the main event to the greatness of Styles Vs. Lesnar, issues with Raw Vs. Smackdown, the birth of a star in the Velveteen Dream, the strengths and weaknesses of the revived War Games concept, as well as cover the current lay of the land as WWE looks to embark on their biggest period of the year. A lot of fun, check it out and let me know what you think!
