Thoughts on weapons:

UNSC:

Assault Rifle: Was the premier rushdown weapon but now with better accuracy and good damage, you can wipe out somebody merely by making sure they stay in your sight for most of the clip. Shooting in bursts sacrifices lethality for more of a support weapon, which is great for crowded skirmishes in Oddball, KotH, and Regiside.

Battle Rifle: Make no mistake this is the go-to long range rifle. Burst fire increases your kill so long as you aim upper body. Does well shooting from the hip, since burst fire gives you reasonable control while following targets. Up close you have just enough spray to do damage. Burst fire also regulates your recoil and accuracy for you, you just need to follow your target.

DMR: Reach's primary rifle is all about the accuracy bloom. The best shots must be timed and spaced out for maximum usage. Longer range than the BR but if you pull the trigger wildly you will waste your shots, your time, your position, your life. Please respect the sight bloom. A lot of posers going all DMR when they should be using the BR based on how they shoot. If you have a degree of control and have a confident position, go for it.

Pistol: Think of this as a baby DMR with better fire rate, though it also has a bloom you can use to maximize long range shots. You can dot snipers to get them off their groove and also go crazy at mid range hoping to score a head shot on a shieldless enemy. Has a scope for some Combat Evolved type justice, though not as nearly as strong. The accuracy (with paced pulls) and fire rate makes this a sleeper weapon that may catch on later down the line.

Spartan Laser: Significantly weakened since its debut in Halo 3, but still a decent vehicle rapist. Lead your shot while charging up and don't be ashamed to abandon the charge unless you're sure of the shot. Try not to impress yourself by using this against infantry. Yeah it feels good but you will either a) get BR/DMR'd right out of the charge or b) probably miss and let the enemy know you have a prize for them. Charge laser gives you away so make the shot and move on. I like to use this initially to take out vehicles and then get rid of it, as you're better off going anti-infantry after the fact.

Railgun: Spartan Laser's baby brother. Similar premise but for people and with a shorter charge time. It has a deceptively wide kill shot with splash damage that makes this more versatile than it seems. Pick off enemy supporters or fire into a crowd to make a difference in a battle. Use at midrange as an instant I win button, use it far range when you see a group. Looks and sounds really satisfying. Also does decent damage to vehicles.

Sniper Rifle: This, people, is a sleeper agent in the war against vehicles. I use it more on vehicles than people now, it fucking hurts. Otherwise it's your standard sniper rifle, four shots to make a kill and head shots seal the deal. But yeah, use this as an extra tool against vehicles, particularly against the banshee - with most pilots conditioned to dodge Spartan Laser lines.

Rocket Launcher: Yea it locks on to Banshees but let's be honest; you wanna blast a guy's feet with this. I don't blame you. Use this monster to settle scores and clear rooms. Don't waste it on Ghosts and Jeeps, and even Mantis'; the rocket is much to slow to promise a hit on those quick vehicles. Use that splash damage to end conversations with little commitment to accuracy or care. Pair with camouflage for lulz.

Sticky Grenade: A much better run and gun weapon than a trap weapon. Stick an enemy or just their area and pull right after, it's pretty good. It's kinda hardcore with one shot to a slow reload, but it's will net you kills or assists right away. Run with a crew when using this weapon, you may need assisting fire.

Shotgun: I suppose in order to differentiate this from the Scattershot, the damage as increased to hilarious levels. You don't even need the 'shotty-whack' anymore, close range is instakill. However, trying to use the old shot whack is nerfed as melee comes out much slower than before. Range seems to have got a buff, though, so this puppy is rabid.

Covie and Promethean weapons later.

There will be a proper photo shoot when the Waypoint site updates for linking files. I'm close to getting my old helmet. Work on CQC map is going... well. May have some bitchin clips/matches in my File Share later.

Wait, HTF are you posting your armor loadouts on here? How can I haz armor screnshoting?

Tom Guycott 11-16-2012 01:07 AM

Also, the Sticky Grenades are the business when paired with dexterity.

In fact, I'm in love with this and the SAW with said augment. They're murder on reload otherwise, and unless you're in a team game with people you know and trust to cover you while doing so, you're going to get plugged clapping that next bomb in. Haven't seen it in action with the explosives perk yet, but I'm too hooked on dex to even think about trying. It's pretty much in every one of my loadouts unless I'm trying to accomplish something in Spartan Ops where something else would help.

Also, on Haven, everyone enters the orgy for the scattershot right off and neglects this gem most of the time, and writes off the needler completely.

That's from the stat site, it doesn't upload screenshots yet. I can't wait because...

Finally got my helmet! My spartan is back!

Saw is great. Explosives is nice because... spoiler...

they work on all explosives, including sticky grenade

Interesting, the armor's linked here updates. My armor changed since I posted it and so did Khuntry's.

Kalyx loves it.

Kalyx triaD 11-16-2012 02:44 PM

I can't disagree with the color...

Made my eyes red, it works better than red visors on other helmets.

El Fangel 11-16-2012 03:38 PM

I have stark Gray on a white field.

El Fangel 11-16-2012 03:51 PM

I just wrecked shit. How do you upload videos?

El Fangel 11-16-2012 04:01 PM

That sucks I couldn't jump in, Kalyx.

Everytime you sent an invite, it told me I couldn't join. Also, I couldn't just wander in as you were invite only and the lobby was locked.

Kalyx triaD 11-17-2012 02:04 AM

I changed it to friends but we'll see it works. It keeps up I'll just make it Open. Gonna put my CQC matches on my File Share later.

alvarado52 11-17-2012 02:16 AM

All those Spartans look the same to me...

Kalyx triaD 11-17-2012 02:18 AM

Hopefully, I'll try again tomorrow (later today... whatever) if we happen to be on at the same time. I work nights, so I keep strange hours. I need to hit level 36 to unlock the Jolly Rodger so that I can fix my Spartan ID to the same thing I've rocked for Halo 3, ODST, and Reach:

http://www.bungie.net/Stats/emblem.a...&bi=3&fl=1&m=3
Ignore the purple crossbones, it was so they bled into the armor and weren't visible.

Kalyx triaD 11-17-2012 05:12 AM

Cool. I had the same triangle emblem since Halo 2, and the EOD armor since Halo 3 (baring ODST of course). These things you really get attached to.

Kalyx triaD 11-17-2012 09:14 AM

After a few play tests of my gametype/map "CQC", I can share some details.

- Small size symmetrical quadrant map. Tight hallways and corners with four shield door bases in each corner. Two main exits lead from the base to a relatively wide center, lit by a blinking yellow pillar (for both atmosphere and visual acclimation). Two bases are lit by their primary team's light (red and blue) to further give sense of location. A 'dumpster jump' provides an extra route if you dare spend time taking it.

- CQC Solo and Team variants have the same details aside from different spawn points. Up to four teams for each corner is set. Suggested player counts: Four teams (2-3 players each), Two teams (4-6 players each), Solo (4-6 players). This map cannot support full 16plyrs as the spawn points simply won't be there, and the map is too tight to add more.

- CQC offers 5 loadouts geared for, of course, close quarters combat. While each one is themed, they all share the same ability and perks: Thruster Pack (in a split second decision game, a quick dodge may be paramount), Dexterity (quick reload and swapping), and Shielding (quick recovery from battle). All loadouts also have the Pulse Grenade, as controlling space will give you an edge (a classic tenet of this gametype). Radar is adjusted to ten meters as the regular setting was more trouble than helpful.

- The CQC themed loadouts are: UNSC (Shotgun/AR), Promethean (Scattershot/Suppressor), Covenant (Sword/Storm Rifle), Beast Mode (Hammer/Saw), and Expert Mode (Boltshot/Needler). All themes provide a sure shot and a bullet spray of some kind. The layout of the map balances the classes since you more or less have to react in an instant regardless of what you have.

- In each base corner there will be random ordinance drops that appear every 45-80 seconds. The possible prizes offer two items from three categories; weapons (Sticky Grenade and Incineration Canon), buffs (Overshield and Damage Boost), and Abilities (Promethean Vision and Camouflage). The randomness adds an arcadey feel while remaining fair as it wouldn't be wise to camp the drop area. A drop icon disappearing is a dead give away to your position, so be careful.

Later tonight I hope to have a decent sized room to have a few Solo and Team CQC games. My XBL notification is off because it pisses me off during splitscreen games so if I don't message back immediately I apologize. My party setting is on Friends now so you should be able to join anytime.

See ya guys later. Special thanks to Figgy, FAngel, and Khuntry for helping me playtest this thing. Wish I could upload a picture but a small maze-like map (with a ceiling) probably wouldn't be photogenic, you have to play it for yourself.

El Fangel 11-17-2012 12:53 PM

Gents, This map of us is something even I can't complain about. Wonderfully thought out.

I never really kept consistent armor. Just go with whatever I dig at the time with a skew towards trying to be somewhat different. Only "mandatory" thing I try to do is to be asymetrical on the arms. I like a larger, clunky shoulder pad on the left and a smaller one on the right. I also try not to pick the same helmet most other people have. That's why I went with the Scout helm: 90% of what I've seen is either default, Warrior, or one of the two EVAs. Now I obviously like Emiele's style (see: facepaint on my avatar to the left), but so do too many other people. Also, a lot of folks are racking up the assassinations and grabbing the Venator. Nobody's rocking the scouter.

As far as the emblems go: on one hand, I kind of wish they were a bit more visable and customizable, but then again, I've played the first Black Ops to see how bad that could turn out. Way too many mocked up Klansmen and Swastikas for my liking.

Boondock Saint 11-17-2012 07:30 PM

Haven't had much time to play this since I got it, unfortunately. But played last night and finally felt as though I was getting my groove back and working off the rust (haven't played since Halo 3).

Gamertag - OKTUR

Kalyx triaD 11-19-2012 02:06 PM

I started the Operator Specialization. The perk that the Specializations offer must a take a slot from your usual set, so getting these things will eventually have you redo a class or two, and you should be well and happy with your classes by then. That kinda blows as I thought the perks would be latched on to your existing classes.

I don't see anything about the armor and logo I need but the visor color is pretty cool.

Kalyx triaD 11-20-2012 03:11 AM

Tom you don't 'suck'. there's just some habits you need to iron out. We need to squad up more often.

Tom Guycott 11-20-2012 04:38 PM

That's the thing though: I'm not really a" squad" person. I don't slice pies and all that jazz. I don't play Rainbow 6. I'm not a fan of Team Fortress (which is why I was personally upset about Brink). I like to run and gun and talk a little trash and have some smack talk sent back (within reason), and with a off-top lack of FFA, I've dropped into teams more often in Halo 4 than I would venture to guess any other Halo previous.

I know I suck because it isn't SFB to me. That, and as much as I love sniping in pretty much any game ever, I'm absolutely horrible at it in Halo for some reason.

Kalyx triaD 11-20-2012 05:29 PM

Well there's your role, less run and gun and more long range support for your team. Put camo together with infinite sprint for a spec ops type class apply your lone wolf style to a team.

I snipe in pretty much every shooter I play. I am good at other styles but sniping is where I find my groove easily.

For you, use

DMR - Long range precision and medium range hipfire (low recoil)
Magnum - Short sniper rifle
Plasma - Learn how to hit peep with these
Active Camouflage
Armor Ability
Ammo

This allow you to sneak around and get a nice vantage point and hide as needs as well as having very accurate firearms with lots of ammo.

I didn't check the stats page (should have before posting), but I think I only have like 2 actual UNSC Sniper kills... both of which were hipfires because I was out of ammo for anything else and the rifle was the closest gun that didn't dissappear; a complaint because I don't dig the rapidly disappearing weaponry, especially when I have my "killstreak stick" aka the Shotgun. Even if I just died, I barely have time to run back to my corpse to get it again before it falls off the face of the planet, and I've gotten more of them from kill scavenging than from actual ordinance drops, which still isn't many.

I actually have a ghost class. Instead of the magnum, however, I picked the firepower perk and paired the DMR with the Covie Carbine. The extra ammo is packed in another longer ranged rifle with a faster fire rate. The DMR is boss, and short of the default/preorder weaponry, it was the first thing I unlocked.

What I was getting at with the sniping thing is that as proficient as I may be with popping headshots with the pistol and the DMR, I suck ass with the actual sniping tool. I'm better with the Beam rifle, and the Binary rules all, but they're both so rare to come by for me (ordanance on teams/random spawns on Regicide) that I barely ever get a chance to use them outside of campaign/spartan ops.

Kalyx triaD 11-22-2012 02:20 AM

I snipe when I need to. Way too boring for my taste. In fact I switch classes according to the situation often.

Kalyx triaD 11-22-2012 02:21 AM

Just finished the campaign by the way.

El Fangel 11-22-2012 02:28 AM

Sniping is horrendously boring in Halo I agree.
