Mass Effect 3

Might as well make this, seeing as how we have our first trailer.

As long as BioWare takes the customization back the way it was in the first game, I'm in.

The Destroyer 12-12-2010 07:35 AM

Awesome, a year to wait.

I hated the customization in the first game anyway. Stupid as it sounds, it was too RPG like. Give me an RPG like story with choices and stuff sure, but I could do without fiddly inventory management.

G 12-12-2010 09:35 AM

Yeah, I loved the dumbed down version of it in ME2. Too much shit to deal with in the first.

Fignuts 12-12-2010 01:49 PM

Thirdededed

Less customization in the skills area was a bit of a draw back, but still not that big a deal. Inventory management was a headache in the first(as with most rpgs) so I'm hoping they keep the system from the second.

Also, I'm hoping they bring back the hovercraft from the dlc instead of that stupid scanning.

Kalyx triaD 12-12-2010 02:31 PM

I figure I'd give this a chance.

Fignuts 12-12-2010 02:34 PM

Have you never played Mass Effect?

LoDownM 12-12-2010 02:39 PM

I wish it came out in summer :( Too long of a wait between DA2 and this.

Kalyx triaD 12-12-2010 02:43 PM

Never. I am versed in Bioware's KOTOR series (which mostly laid the groundwork for Mass Effect and that 'Medieval Mass Effect'), but I wasn't interest in nether of their recent series.

Gonna give it a go with ME3. I was a huge RPG nut back in the day, but my interests shifted to multiplayer experiences. I'm much too harsh on single player stories that are expected to be taken seriously, so I avoid a lot of single player games and even modes.

Mass Effect is otherwise right up my alley and more than a few people were surprised I didn't play the hell out of it.

RoXer 12-12-2010 02:45 PM

Shouldn't you start with 1 rather than 3?

This. Would be like watching Return of the Jedi first.

Fignuts 12-12-2010 02:49 PM

Seriously, if story is your big hang up, then you will be fine, as Mass Effect has one of the better storylines in gaming right now, but you really need to play the first two.

Fignuts 12-12-2010 02:50 PM

It's totally worth it, since you can get them both cheap. DLC is awesome as well.

Kalyx triaD 12-12-2010 02:51 PM

Doesn't matter to me.

And I'm not the kind of douche who'll start at 3 and then bitch about not knowing what's going on. I do research. I wiki. No worries.

So you're THAT kind of douche.

RoXer 12-12-2010 02:52 PM

Just start on 1 like any other normal human being would

Kalyx triaD 12-12-2010 03:05 PM

What? No. You know how much Bayonetta I gotta play in the next few weeks? And I have to finish Reach on legendary and I clock in 2hrs a map on that difficulty. I have characters to unlock in KoF2002. I need to bust up the Pac Man DX leaderboards. Gotta get back into Red Dead. I'm out of practice in Super Street Fighter 4. Gotta go achievement hunting in Halo ODST for some damn armor locked in Reach. I have 4 more years worth of X-Files to watch and I still didn't find that Simpsons episode. I'm getting into Samurai Champloo again. I got Jackie Chan Adventures on the side. I started Spectacular Spidey a few weeks ago and I really like watching random movies in between.

Oh and I do school stuff and direct my team's various projects. Yeah.

Mass Effect 3 or bust on the series. lol

The Destroyer 12-12-2010 03:05 PM

You've got a year to play 1 and 2. Much more fun than reading about the storyline on a wiki.

Particularly as stuff you do in the first two will influence what happens in the third.

Requiem 12-12-2010 03:06 PM

The Mass Effect series is better than anything you just mentioned in that post. Seriously.

RoXer 12-12-2010 03:08 PM

Don't forget Fringe

Kalyx triaD 12-12-2010 03:10 PM

I'm fine.

Normally this wouldn't be so bad, but Mass Effect really needs to be experienced. I'm sure you've read about it, and you think you know what you're missing, but don't. At least not fully.

Just seems like crazy talk to those of us who have played it, and no how retardedly good it is.

I mean it's been touted as arguably the best series this generation.

Playing the first two to get to the third may not matter to you, but it couldn't hurt to try, could it? Especially since like I said, you can get them mad cheap now.

God damn you Fignuts. You'll pay for this.

This is gonna require a new approach. I rarely play catch up with games like this.

Kalyx triaD 12-12-2010 03:14 PM

No promises, though. Not unless you guys wanna spend 20hrs in Bayonetta to see why the engine is genius.

RoXer 12-12-2010 03:15 PM

I remember having to forego video games to catch up on my cartoons.

When I was 6

Kalyx triaD 12-12-2010 03:16 PM

Actually gonna start with ME2, it's actually in the house somewhere. Been here since it launched apparently.

The Destroyer 12-12-2010 03:16 PM

Come on, do it. Watch yourself get attached to whatever brand of space adventurer you decide to make Shepard and his motley crew.

Fignuts 12-12-2010 03:17 PM

Yes they are RPGs but even with all the side quests it won't take up as much of your time as most games from this genre.

So don't worry about that. Won't interfere with your BUSY BUSY schedule that much.

The Destroyer 12-12-2010 03:17 PM

No, no, NO.

Start with ME1.

Requiem 12-12-2010 03:17 PM

Seriously, I think you're missing the point we're trying to make. Start with 1.

No. Play 1 first. You can probably get it for less than 10 bucks at this point.

The games are good enough to stand on their own, but are really meant to be experienced as a trilogy. That's why your decisions carry over from one game, to the next. Also, Bioware is known for the rich mythology they create for each game, and it's a lot to take in if you are starting on two.

Exactly.

Plus if you managed to have sex with someone in ME1, it'll make running into them in ME2 (or NOT as the case may be) that much more satisfying. :shifty:

Fignuts 12-12-2010 03:23 PM

I feel like I shouldn't even be having this conversation with you kalyx.

I feel like this is the conversation I'd be having if I was reccomending ME to a bro gamer. Because this is the kind of crap they pull.

We're meeting halfway here. Starting at 2. It's here and everything.

None of you are on the Crazy Taxi leaderboards. Don't know why I know you people sometimes.

The Destroyer 12-12-2010 03:26 PM

Meeting halfway is not acceptable.

Fignuts 12-12-2010 03:27 PM

Seriously though, they are big games, but you will still have plenty of time to achieve your S++ flippity floppity style combos in bayonetta, conquer your stupid legendary difficulty in halo, unlock all the characters in that kof that no one else plays, and do whatever other dumb achievements you feel you HAVE to accomplish before Mass Effect 3 comes out.

The Destroyer 12-12-2010 03:29 PM

I did a playthrough of ME1 just before the sequel came out and I don't think it took me long. Maybe 2-3 weeks of fairly casual play.

Fignuts 12-12-2010 03:29 PM

Kalyx Triad must unlock Recon Armor before December 12th 2011, or this bus will explode!

Rated R

For Retarded.

Kalyx triaD 12-12-2010 03:31 PM

I'll have you know I play KoF2002 with my bro. often. It is well made. Dare I say I have more fun in that than SSF4.

Brujesino 12-12-2010 03:31 PM

Fuck i cant wait for ME3. I hope they make this game longer then part2 maybe add another disc to make the storyline long.

Kinda felt sad that the prothean at the end of ME2 died i hope they come out in part 3.

No, it's good that you said something. Otherwise we couldn't tell you how ridiculous you are being.

Kalyx triaD 12-12-2010 03:37 PM

You guys don't play Reach, Bayonetta, KoF, or Pac Man - and I'm the crazy one...

Bunch of weirdos.

RoXer 12-12-2010 03:37 PM

And it's not even "nerdrage" over some game. It's common sense. You don't start a series on the very last chapter/episode/whatever.

I keep recommending you Fringe. But notice that I've linked you to the first season. Even though the 3rd is tremendous, I realize you'll have to watch the 2 seasons before that.

Kalyx triaD 12-12-2010 03:39 PM

I do that with TV shows, not so much with games. You knew I did it like that.

G 12-12-2010 03:39 PM

alvarado is gonna come in here thinking his thread got 50+ replies already discussing me3.

boy is he gonna feel silly

Just do me a favor and trust me on this.

The story in 4 is not dependent on what choices you made in the earlier games.

And yes, I dled ssf2thdr and played alpha for a little bit to get back into the swing of the game.

I wouldn't grill you on it. Come to think of it I don't ever lobby to get people playing certain games. I'm usually on the other end of that, though.

RoXer 12-12-2010 03:44 PM

All this time wasted arguing on the internet could have been time well spent playing video games and watching TV.

Go finish your list.

Kalyx triaD 12-12-2010 03:45 PM

I never played SF1 by the way. I couldn't reach the controls at the time, c'mon.

Fignuts 12-12-2010 03:46 PM

Where is Funky? Everytime I see him he is playing ME 1.

But I'm sure it's on your list of retro shit to "enjoy" (put up with for the sake of nostalgia) while current enjoyable things are being left in the dust for you to enjoy when they are no longer current.

Fringe? Mass Effect? Lost? psh. I'm busy enough with X-Files, KOF2002, and Jackie Chan Adventures. AND I've gotta go play SF1.

Don't overstate this place's influence. There's reasons I don't cheer you guys toward games I play, and I'm fine with 'crossing paths' online.

Have you ever wondered how many times you seen me persistently suggest anything on here? It's not because I don't think what I'm into is quality. It's sort've tied with why I didn't join Alva when Reach dropped, and why you had to twist my arm to play Transformers coop with ya guys.

My list has embarrassing things anyway.

Fignuts 12-12-2010 04:18 PM

1. Unlock all costumes in Rumble Roses XX

Fignuts 12-12-2010 04:18 PM

I never wondered why I had to twist your arm to play Transformers (something you enjoy). But now that I think about, it's probably because you had to finish the last 2 seasons of Shoalin Showdown.

I'm suggesting Fringe not because I like it but because I know for a fact that you will like it. It is the best sci-fi show on TV. And to see you put it off for another sci-fi show that aired 20 years ago is very annoying.

Mass Effect (as a series) is being recommended not only because it is one of the best series but because we know you will enjoy it. And to see you put it off for other games that either old or tedious is very annoying.

RoXer 12-12-2010 04:30 PM

I want you to join us in the 21st century and enjoy relevant things with us.

Aforementioned diversions. And I sleep a lot more now, because I need to.

Gonzo 12-12-2010 05:11 PM

I have absolutely no reservation about calling the Mass Effect series one of the best stories every told in video game history. There is absolutely nothing that comes to my mind that can hold a candle to the way the story is told in Mass Effect. I can't recall any other game where the choices you made in the first iteration, would have an effect on the third. The game has RPG elements, shooter elements, and is perhaps one of the most fun, immersing experiences I've ever had with any form of entertainment, period.

I will say this, Kalyx, if you can't find the time to play Mass Effect 1 & 2, in that order, you're missing out on gaming history. And to be frank, you can probably bang out each game in a week or so.

Kalyx triaD 12-12-2010 05:17 PM

Would anybody play Bayonetta because I said it is the greatest action game ever crafted? Cause you should. Just putting it out because I put a lot of time into it and even now I'm thinking of new combos.

Fignuts 12-12-2010 05:22 PM

I DID

So do what I say and play ME from the start.

Kalyx triaD 12-12-2010 05:28 PM

Heard you the first time, Figs.

Fignuts 12-12-2010 05:30 PM

Well, as long as you keep going on about how you told people to play bayonetta, I'll keep telling you I did.

Kalyx triaD 12-12-2010 05:32 PM

Damn you. To hell.

alvarado52 12-12-2010 06:01 PM

In all honesty, Bayonetta is a game not eveyone would be able to enjoy. A killer story though, anyone can appreciate.

You keep bringing this up, but the argument is totally different.

You love the engine of Bayonetta. Not eveyone is gonna give a rats ass about an engine in a game enough to see through it.

A story though? That shit will grip you and drag your ass to the very end.

Mass Effect as a GAME is fucking awesome. As a story? Epic.

Now play Mass Effect 1 for fucks sake.

Fignuts 12-12-2010 06:21 PM

Bayonetta gripped you?

Really?

I mean I will freely admit that from a gameplay standpoint, it is the very best of it's kind. But the story seems pretty crappy to me. Standard Japan anime type stuff, really.

Kalyx triaD 12-12-2010 08:03 PM

If You guys think I play Bayo for the story you're mistaken.

Far as I'm concerned, I'm a bigger proponent for gameplay than story.

Kalyx triaD 12-12-2010 08:12 PM

From the "Best Game Evar" thread:

Quote:

Games I put days worth of life into:

Rock Band 1/2
Capcom vs SNK 2
Halo 2/3/Reach
GoldenEye
Soulcalibur 1/2/3/4
WWE No Mercy
WWE Day of Reckoning 2
Splinter Cell Pandora Tomorrow/Chaos Theory (Multiplayer)
Legend of Zelda OoT
Mario Party
X-Men Legends 1/2/Ultimate Alliance
Battlefield Bad Company 2
Star Wars Battlefront 1/2
Star Wars KoTOR 1/2
WWE Smackdown! HCTP/2009
Tony Hawk 3/THUG
Devil May Cry 3
Bayonetta
Rescue (NES)
TMNT Turtles in Time
Super Contra
Guitar Hero 2/80s/3/WT
Banjo Kazooie

And more I guess.
How many of those have gripping narratives? Now how many of those have great multiplayer? My favorite genres often make no attempts at a significant story.

Johnny McNasty 12-12-2010 08:17 PM

The fact that you have KOTOR on your list of favorite games, should make the decision to get Mass Effect a no brainer
