Your ps3 is a paperweight tonight...

Just got off the phone with Sony, and was told my ps3 would not be active for around 2 hours (your's won't either). Guess I'll stick with Microsoft.

FearedSanctity 02-28-2010 08:51 PM

Why? Service on the servers? If that's the reason, it happens every once in a while, even for Xbox. Not that big of a deal. Not like they could make it not work completely, probably just can't play online

Fignuts 02-28-2010 08:52 PM

Yeah what? They can't actually brick your console so you can't even play offline.

Xero 02-28-2010 08:54 PM

Yeah, what? Are you complaining that you can't play online or did they brick your system?

For the record, the PS3, Wii and 360 can be bricked remotely by their respective companies I believe.

FearedSanctity 02-28-2010 08:56 PM

True, but the fix for that, I believe, would be to just disconnect it from the internet?

CSL 02-28-2010 08:56 PM

Everything on my PS3 is functioning perfectly normal

Icess 02-28-2010 08:57 PM

Nothing works. Movies, discs, games on the HD, internet, nada...

That hasn't happened on thee 360 as far as I'm aware.

FearedSanctity 02-28-2010 08:59 PM

Mine is fine? What was their reasoning?

Xero 02-28-2010 09:01 PM

From Joystiq:

A wide rash of game-crashing errors is spreading among the PS3-owning community at the moment, most of which can be chalked up to a 8001050F error code. This has led to a variety of unfortunate side-effects for those affected, including corrupted trophy information and an inability to access the PSN. When combined, those two issues prevent players from launching certain games, such as Heavy Rain, without being kicked back to the XMB.

We've contacted Sony to find out what's causing the issue, and when we can expect to get back to chasing down the Origami Killer. He might just be able to make a clean getaway while we suffer through this downtime.

I can't remember WHICH system, might have been the original X Box, but I know I've read that chipped systems can get their drives locked and encrypted, making them unusable.

Big Fat Mike 02-28-2010 09:04 PM

Wow. All 3 of my units work right now. Yeah, I said 3.

That it was an "unscheduled maintenance issue" that would take around "two hours to fix, hopefully". I kept trying to figure out why the disc reading/hard drive games wouldn't work, only to get they "just don't" (Heavy Rain boots up and writes "Registration of the trophy information could not be completed. The game will quit (8001050F)). I asked about movies, and dude said the PS3 is a paperweight tonight. I laughed and hung up.

Really irritated cause I bought FF VIII tonight, and was looking to play it after basketball.

I also have 3. Only one won't even turn on/YLOD even after reflowing and another won't play/read discs :(

Icess 02-28-2010 09:13 PM

I've had all 3 systems since day one (PS3, 360, and Wii), and for whatever reason, today is my first malfunction.

Xero 02-28-2010 09:14 PM

Never should have said anything. Bet you'll RROD in a few weeks.

CSL 02-28-2010 09:21 PM

Thought about that. To be honest, I'd like to upgrade to the Elite. My 360 decided a while ago to close the disc drive by it's self, so it can be an issue timing when I put "it in". Also, it can be like an old car at times, where I have to let it warm up a bit before reading the discs. That said, I'd hardly complain if it shitted itself at this point. Most people haven't had this luck; so after 5 years of amazement, I'd be ok.

I actually really feel his pain. I psyched myself up to play OLD SKOOL tonight, and am really feeling depressed right now. Might have to play Mafia Wars

You reflowed wrong, or you forgot to plug back in/fucked one of the connections. I shouldn't talk, I've done a combined 6 reflows on 2 units in the past week.

CSL 02-28-2010 09:26 PM

Yeah, I'm pretty sure I melted something I wasn't supposed to whilst doing it :o

How fucking weird, glad i didn't buy a ps3 now.

CSL 02-28-2010 09:35 PM

Uh huh, a complete one off means it's totally not worth it

Icess 02-28-2010 09:36 PM

I just don't understand why my system isn't able to do anything. None of my games work, none of my Blu-Ray DVD's work, nothing off my HD works. I haven't even played it in a few days. I'm not really that pissed, but I was looking forward to Final Fantasy tonight. Kinda just confused on how a whole thing crashes. And a bit concerned about my CC info (cause I had to enter all that stuff in again to sign into PSN, which still didn't work).

Savio 02-28-2010 09:36 PM

mine is working perfectly

Well i assume its caused more people problems elsewhere. They wouldn't have sent out this message just cause one guy on tpww had problems with it!

It wasn't worth the original price, and there are far more enjoyable games that can be utilized with the 360. Plus, the controller suits many people better (those of us with ginormous hands). PS3 is fine now with solid exclusives; but in the end, 360 still just has more. I want both, but if you're given only one option...

Time to break out Dead Rising folks. I claim the wine bottles/

OssMan 02-28-2010 09:46 PM

Everyone flipping out when they can't use PS3 for a few hours

Londoner 02-28-2010 09:47 PM

I still use the ps2 lol. I want a new console though but not sure which, favouring nintendo wii right now.

ClockShot 02-28-2010 09:49 PM

Wait. So all along this was a world wide problem, and I wasn't the only one having Heavy Rain crash on me when loading. And I didn't have to start a new game and just ride this out?

Got bored with Law and Order rerun's, and your ma isn't calling back.

OssMan 02-28-2010 09:52 PM

Where do you live Icess

Icess 02-28-2010 09:54 PM

We're practically neighbor's at this point.

Icess 02-28-2010 09:57 PM

*UPDATE*

Sony hates Heavy Rain. As far as I can tell, all games work... Except the title "Heavy Rain". Way to do justice to an exclusive. You still can't access the PSN, or any games that you have saved on your HD.

OssMan 02-28-2010 10:00 PM

Some bros are saying that their PS3s were not even connected to the internet and they still got this problem. Now that's funky

Icess 02-28-2010 10:02 PM

Told ya....

I'm worried. Already insulated my house with foil.

What Would Kevin Do? 02-28-2010 10:03 PM

Wonder if it could be a virus.

ClockShot 02-28-2010 10:05 PM

Then again, there was a report going around that the PS3 was finally hacked....

Kane Knight 02-28-2010 10:08 PM

Man, this just proves how terrible the PS3 is. I mean, a couple hours offline? That's never happened to the Xbox, and it's so reliable.

What Would Kevin Do? 02-28-2010 10:09 PM

Icess 02-28-2010 10:09 PM

We apparently chose the wrong path, and the Origami virus has decided to wreck the Sony enterprise. Stupid me had to go and find the killer and stuff.

Good job exclusives.

Londoner 02-28-2010 10:10 PM

I take it my ps2 would still work?

Londoner 02-28-2010 10:11 PM

Holy shit, it appears not.

edit: My mistake, it does lol.

What Would Kevin Do? 02-28-2010 10:14 PM

It has nothing to do with Heavy Rain, it has to do with PSN.

PSN is totally down. Any game that requires PSN to run won't run, which includes anything downloaded, themes, etc.

I haven't tried to play Heavy Rain, my copy of Uncharted 2 works fine though.

You realize that it's not that I cannot play online. It could not be used for over 4 hours in any function. Since then, you can load other games (not Heavy Rain, the biggest PS3 exclusive of the month), you can't watch movies, can't play any downloaded games, and the guy taking calls referred it to a "paper weight for the next couple of hours".

Oh, don't try playing the GOW package either; cause while it loads ok, it will delete your saved game anytime you MOVE FUCKING FORWARD.

This may not be true at all. Multiple people have said that they have never connected to the internet, or at least not recently connected to the internet. Thus, it should have no bearing.

I've restored my original settings, haven't connected to PSN, and still can't do dick.

CSL 02-28-2010 10:30 PM

Not exactly sure what you mean but I am currently playing LittleBigPlanet online.

Icess 02-28-2010 10:35 PM

If my PS3 hadn't erased my GOW saves, I'd try my Little Big Planet. I now fear turning it on.

Splaya 02-28-2010 11:51 PM

Cannot even play anything. Just tried to play Modern Warfare the story mode, and the game made me quit

Icess 03-01-2010 12:02 AM

Apparently, we're on hour number 9. Was able to watch 10,000 BC for 5 minutes. Training Day didn't even load. Bitter

PapaGeorgio 03-01-2010 12:10 AM

Glad I was able to beat Heavy Rain tonight with no issues.

The one that doesn't read discs, you tried re-installing the drivers from the debug menu? It fixed one I bought faulty then flipped for a profit.

My ending was enjoyable. Def an intense final 4 hours or so of gameplay. Didn't feel much closure on a lot of subject though. Still had some unanswered questions too. Read some of the other endings and didn't seem to really answer any of my questions either. Things def pick up at the end though, and made the game more enjoyable.

Savio 03-01-2010 02:13 AM

go to standby. (the red light) plug in your controller. hold down power till the system turns on then back off. release power. hold it again it`ll give two single beeps then a double beep. let go after the double. option 3 is the for your drivers or so i was led to beleive. on screen promtps will walk you through from there.

Held down the PS button from standby for like 3-4 minutes and it just turned the PS3 on, nothing else :( It's an old 40GB model, would that 'make any difference'?

Destor 03-01-2010 03:43 AM

Funny, I don't see an entire wiki page dedicated to PS3 errors like the 360 has. /fanboy

#BROKEN Hasney 03-01-2010 05:05 AM

The 360 was rushed out to get the early market advantage the PS2 enjoyed against the original XBox, so it was fucked.

The PS3 was rushed out not only to compete with the 360, but also to try and get blu-ray in peoples homes like the PS2 did with DVD.

Both have shite faliure rates topped by only the Jaguar CD, but the newer models for both are a lot better (barring this weird software issue).

Other than the NES, Nintendo hardware is crazy reliable. These HD consoles are insane though.

#BROKEN Hasney 03-01-2010 05:51 AM

Been doing some reading around and it doesn't affect slims. Also, it appears to be caused by 2010 being flagged as a leap year. Pretty bizzare bug.

Funky Fly 03-01-2010 05:56 AM

You know what really fucks me up, is that I was about to make the jump and finally get a PS3, but then I get to hear about shit like this and the god damn fucking lack of backward compatibility. There is too much shit hooked up to my TV already. Don't need another device.

El Capitano Gatisto 03-01-2010 01:03 PM

Wonder why it's so tough for people just to calm down and wait until they hear it's been fixed. So you have to do without your PS3 for a day, I'm sure people in Chile and Haiti are stopping for a second and wondering how you'll cope.

Big Fat Mike 03-01-2010 01:06 PM

I hate to admit this, but KK has a point. The emergence of the Slim models combined with the steadily increasing occurence of hardware failures with the older fat models seems less and less like a coincidence and more and more like a built-in obselescence. I doubt anything will come of it, but it's an interesting point to ponder.

In english: Do you think there's a possibility that sony has somehow set a specific lifespan on their older models to ensure sales of the newer models? Considering how much money they lost PER UNIT at launch, it's concievable.

Edit: Also, I agree with ECG. If losing your gamesave information and tropy data is the worst thing that happens to you this year, you should be pretty fucking thankful.

El Capitano Gatisto 03-01-2010 01:12 PM

It would be difficult to keep a thing like that secret, plus to be honest a mass failing of systems would look awful for them. If they needed money I assume they'll just start charging subscription to PSN.

Big Fat Mike 03-01-2010 01:16 PM

You're probably right. While the majority of people would piss and moan about a subscription fee, nothing would stop them from shelling out $50 or $60 a year.

#BROKEN Hasney 03-01-2010 01:31 PM

Trophies are backed up server side right? Like if you logged into your PSN ID on a brand new console, you'd still have your trophies on your profile?

I wouldn't worry too much about them. Losing save games is a pain in the arse though.

Dark-Slicer Diago 03-01-2010 02:30 PM

Especailly if you've lost them before.

Dunno if the threads still there, but some people were caring more about trophies than their last level save games on the official forums.

I care more for the save itself as opposed to the the trophies which I can easilly get back.
