Nice.
|
Scott Pilgrim seems to allow Michael Cera to be more manly than he normally is!
|
I've heard from several people that the graphic novels are good though. Never read any.
|
Just read the first graphic novel after seeing this trailer, pretty hot stuff.
|
New trailer is out
http://trailers.apple.com/trailers/u...rimvstheworld/ Really can't wait for this. Read all the novels and they are amazing. |
Edgar Wright is the goods. Looking forward to his next movie with Simon Pegg and Nick Frost
|
Wait wait wait wait...
This is fucking awesome. Why didn't anybody tell me about this? |
I've seen that girl before, but where??? Was she in Sky High?

Last volume of the comic series came out last week. Amazing. Definitely read the books if you haven't, one of the best series I've read.
|
|
The only movie we want Michael Cera to do isn't happening fast enough. Come on!
|
Maybe I'll watch it/download it when it's out on DVD, right now I have no interest in this movie.
|
When does this open it looks really good and right up my alley.

this looks terrible but I love the director so I could give this a shot

Michael Cera will be in every scene Ermax, so the movie being great minus Michael Cera = no movie.
I think it looks alright/interesting. I'm a bit sick of Cera but I don't hate him. I will give it a shot. |

I dunno I love the happless bumbling style of comedic actors like Cera and that kid from Zombieland...think his name is Jessie somethingerother....plus I like the kid who played McLovin
I think I'm a fan of the bumbling underdog. |

Michael Cera should sue Jessie Eisenberg for gimmick infringment.
|
Aight, just saw this. Was one of the better movies I've seen this year. Probably would be better seeing it whilst high/drunk though.
|
Probably as good of a translation of the books as you can get. Michael Cera was a much better Scott Pilgrim than I was expecting. Strongest ensemble cast I've seen in a while. Also, fight scenes were much stronger than I expected.
|
Also, lol @ the Thomas Jane cameo. Not expecting that.
|
Holy shit, didn't realise that was Thomas Jane. Epic.

Friends loved this. I'm going today!

Such a great movie. Alot of fun and definitely meant for those who've played video games since back in the NES days. Edgar Wright does it again with this one. I'd so see it a second time!
BTW Mary Elizabeth is such a cutie too. Have the biggest crush on her, and Knives ain't too bad herself! |
This has really kinda bombed at the box office. The grosses are disappointing at best.
It's a shame too because it's a very good movie. I wonder why audiences are staying away? It could look "too hipster" for some people, or maybe people are sick of Michael Cera? Obviously it has it's cult following already, but I suspect a lot of people will discover it on dvd |
I marked out when the title music from A Link to the Past played

I'm not saying they will make it profitable on DVD, I'm saying they will find it and make it into a remembered cult movie
|
Seeing the previews in theaters and on talk shows, it looks fucking horrible, that's why it is bombing.

Just because the comics are broken up into different parts doesn't mean the live action adaptation should be. I also have no problems with a lot of the fat being cut for film adaptations of just about anything in print. As long as the important stuff is all there and the film is good/true to the source material in spirit. |

Someone wanted to know why it's bombing, I told you, it is fact. Why the hell would anyone go to a movie that they think would suck? Dumbass. |

A big budget HBO 12 part series would have been better, IMO. Scott Pilgrim strikes me as some shit that should be 6 mid to low budget (intentionally shitty FX) films filmed in 1 go and released annually. The biggest aspect of the books' charm was than there were so many stupid little subplots and retarded things going on that the main plot seemed almost secondary to the daily happenings of the characters. Problem is that this approach caters directly to the cult following and will not generate as much moey as a big budget film <s>would</s> should. |
I don't think movie fans were like WTF to Watchmen. The mainstream audiences mostly had that reaction, but I can't say a lot for the tastes of the average movie-going idiot.
Some comic fans may have been in nerd mode, but the movie buffs and critics seemed to love it. I think most comic fans are tremendously dense when it comes to movie adaptations and just understanding the medium of film as compared to comics altogether. I definitely think Watchmen could have worked as a mini-series as well, but I still think a film was a better route. Most of those mainstream fans were confused by a lot of the "what if" concepts and a lot of Moore's ideas were lost on them. It isn't really entirely their fault either, since they probably just don't care or have any knowledge of the book. They also probably had misconceptions going in. It's a bit heavy for a "comic movie" and the majority was probably thinking, "This is too long. Where is the action? There's too much talking and stuff. What year is this set in?" 3 hours seemed about right. 2 hours isn't enough, but 10 hours or anything in that range would just be needless, and too drawn out to really keep a keen focus on the real story. Fans would probably think it was great because they got to see Black Freighter and all the backstory crap, but it would really just distract. Books and films are such different beasts. Making a mini-series out of a Stephen King novel hasn't improved the quality in any way. It just makes it longer and lowers production/acting values. If anything, they should be streamlining and movies force that. I absolutely think Scott Pilgrim was best suited as a movie, not just because of the books but because of how Edgar Wright did it. The Kill Bill meets Say Anything feel was best at 2 hours. |
Just saw this shit. Fucking called it. Far too much of the subplots (and especially some rather major ones) being left out for it to be as good as it could have been. Def should have been a tv show or a series of movies. There's just far too much source material to be one film. Came off as weak overall.
Usual comic to movie adaptation bullshit with things being changed around for the sake of the format happened, but it wasn't a big deal. |
So would the fact that I've never read the comic book enhance the experience for me?
|
You wouldn't know what you were missing, so yeah.
When a niche film, based on a niche comic comes out, you'd expect they'd pander to the people that made it successful in the first place. Maybe this is coming off as nerd rage, I dunno, but all I'm saying is that like 2/3 of what happens in the books isn't included. So many little running jokes and references got left out, entire scenes are missing, 3 pivotal subplots got shortened to a minute or so on screen. It's hard to ignore if you've read the books. |
That's what adaptations do. No book to film adaptation is ever going to include all of the subplots. People have complained about this from Lord of the Rings, to Watchmen, and soon Dark Tower. Also, tons of drama movies that are based off Dennis Lehane or John Grisham novels are always met with "the book was better" criticisms. I don't know why people still expect movies to match the book.
I know you suggested a TV series, but realistically that wasn't going to happen. So basically it comes down to being for or against adaptations in general, I think. I'm good with it. Mainly I don't care because I just want it to be a good movie that matches the same spirit, and if I want more detail I can read the book. |
Harry Potter films might be the closet to doing that since its set up as every book has just 1 film but even then the films can't cover everything in a book which is around 250-350 pages each.

But the 1 film didn't even break even. And that wasn't for a lack of it's comic fans. They account for a very small number. Good luck getting a 3-6 film production greenlit from the get-go. They need to think in terms of one film.
And a story about getting a girl can stretch over 6 installments in comics, but not movies. I just don't think people would bite for that on film. |
That's just it though. He got the girl early on (book 1). Complications came later and they keep fighting and making up. It's what made the whole thing so good. I know fans of the source account for a small number. Fuck, next to no one had ever heard of it prior to the movie and next to no one knows it's a comic now. I'm not a fan of this type of comic, but the charm of the story as a whole is what draws you in.
This didn't really need a big budget at all. Shittier effects would have actually been better, IMO. Sticking by my idea of a bunch of low budget titles filmed together and released annually. |
Well, yea. That was still the case in the movie too. That's the case with every get the girl story. I meant get the girl for good and happily ever after.
It was pretty low budget too. I guess effects have just come a long way. Whatever FUCKY Fly.... |
Loved this

Do you consider 60 million dollars high or low? That's pretty damn low for that movie
|
I actually liked the movie...ALOT

This seems to be one of those 'you get it or you don't' things.
A lot like anime, actually. |

Thought it was awsome, alot better than i thought it was going to be. But so much stuff was missed out and changed, i get why but it was still kind of annoying in parts.
|
I LOVE THIS MOVIE.
|
I saw it and thought it was pretty good, better than I assumed. But it wasn't anything *great*. The ending and the plot was a bit typical but the 'videogame effects' were pretty cool.
|
great movie
tragically canadien lol |
Probably my favorite Michael Cera movie ever.
|
I doubted this movie too. I ended up finally seeing it and I loved it. Gotta love redbox.
|
I haven't had a chance to see this flick but I learned recently that the dude who created the comic is from my city, which I think is neat. We went to the same university... although a lot of people went there. Anyways thats my two cents.
