MAJOR SMACKDOWN SPOILER

...What. Well, that's surprising. I kind of expected/hoped they'd just have him play the heel that pops in and out with the case while threatening to cash it in.

This? This is surprising.

Innovator 03-30-2010 11:42 PM

ahahahahahaha

Droford 03-30-2010 11:42 PM

Maybe thats why Jericho was the way he was on NXT

HeartBreakMan2k 03-30-2010 11:43 PM

I somewhat expected him to beat Jericho since Y2J retained... although I didn't expect it to be this soon...

dronepool 03-30-2010 11:44 PM

Holy shit.

Wow.

Where do they go with him now? whats his feud?

Droford 03-30-2010 11:44 PM

Edge. He just ripped off Edge!

I have a feeling this is going to be a Sheamus-like push.

Dark One 03-30-2010 11:48 PM

Well, at least Smackdown has its World Champion Champion Champion now.

Evil Vito 03-30-2010 11:48 PM

Holy fucking shit.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-30-2010 11:49 PM

that's the stupidest thing I ever heard

legendkillerRKO 03-30-2010 11:50 PM

dont hate...Smackdown! got Swagger! lol!

Supreme Olajuwon 03-30-2010 11:52 PM

nah jk I care for Swagger

Mr. Pierre 03-30-2010 11:52 PM

I'm a Swagger mark and I usually don't complain, but wtf...

Is the booking team that lazy that they can't build a guy over a period of time and when he proves that he is over enough and talented enough, to THEN give him the Championship? I'm just not a fan of, "We need a star...", and then immediately putting the World Title on the guy..

We'll see how this plays out I guess.

Fox 03-30-2010 11:52 PM

This should be Christian cashing in on Jericho, perfectly setting up an Edge vs. Christian vs. Jericho feud for the next couple of months.

Swagger? I like the guy, but he's not ready. This is going to be Sheamus V2.

Supreme Olajuwon 03-30-2010 11:53 PM

Evil Vito 03-30-2010 11:53 PM

Maybe I'm in the minority, but if they were going to have him cash-in this early I would've just had him beat Jericho at WM after the Spear through the table.

I think this early cash-in might be WWE's way of justifying having another one (or possibly two) at a MITB PPV in July.

Yeah. It was even set up perfectly. He should have just capitalized on the Spear off the table.

I was stunned they didn't do this. I was waiting and waiting for it, especially after they had him talk up cashing it in on the same night on that week's Raw.

Evil Vito 03-30-2010 11:56 PM

In fact, I would wager that maybe Swagger WAS meant to cash-in at Mania but they decided to punish him for taking half an hour to unhook the briefcase or something stupid like that.

:wtf: This is just some fucking shenanigans. :nono:

Jordan 03-31-2010 12:01 AM

Whoa, holy shit. I can't believe it.

Evil Vito 03-31-2010 12:02 AM

Imagine if Jericho was injured by the Spear or something? After the entire storyline being that he doesn't get injured? :o

Just trying to think of reasons why this happened so fast.

Kapoutman 03-31-2010 12:05 AM

YES.

I fucking love Swagger. Of course he's still not over like a main-eventer, but I love the way he's always obnoxious and overbearing. Unlike other rookies, he seems to know his way around the ring, his moves look crisp and effective, and he has the background that would make it believeable for him to be able to hang out with main-eventers immediately. They just need to make him look like he isn't a fluke. A personality like that can generate heat if you give it time.

Evil Vito 03-31-2010 12:06 AM

Actually nah, Jericho was in a dark match last night so that's not it, unless he got injured in that match.

Damn. Shocking.

Xero 03-31-2010 12:08 AM

Gonna keep this as a separate thread from the rest of SD, but here's how it went down. It opened the show.

From PWInsider:

Smackdown starts with Chris Jericho coming down to the ring....mixed reaction when he cuts a great promo about keeping the World Title at WrestleMania 26.

Jericho is awesome on the microphone, getting great heat from the crowd.

Edge comes out to a huge pop. Edge says that he thinks he should get a rematch right now. Jericho is not taking the bait.

Edge starts beating up Jericho and ripping off his clothes to reveal taped ribs. Edge then spears Jericho. Jack Swagger then comes out to cash in MITB. Swagger hit Edge with the briefcase. The bell rings and Swagger WINS THE BELT with a power bomb. He walks out of the ring with the world title. The crowd is stunned.

Commercial time and Jericho is being helped from the ring. He's in shock. He starts throwing a tantrum up the ramp. The crowd is buzzing.

What Would Kevin Do? 03-31-2010 12:08 AM

I love Swagger, but why this after essentially burying him? I mean, even with Punk, Punk was built up pretty good.

Haha, this is what I am thinking too. Would have been fucking sweet if Swagger had gone 2-0 defeating ten guys, two former World Champions at his first WrestleMania, and become World Heavyweight Champion.

I love Swagger. I am not going to complain. I think he's a great talent, and I look forward to seeing what he can do with the World Heavyweight Championship. This will probably turn into Jack Swagger vs. The Undertaker with Edge and Chris Jericho continuing their feud elsewhere; or a multi-man program featuring those sort of guys.

Another thing to consider: The draft. It's very possible that Chris Jericho will be moving to RAW or something, and they feel the need to get the World Heavyweight Title off him. Granted, there is another PPV before the draft, but yeah -- I'm sure there is a reason Swagger is your new World Heavyweight Champion.

What Would Kevin Do? 03-31-2010 12:09 AM

You know, with a draft coming up, I wonder if this is just a quick way to get the belt off of Jericho, so they can move him to Raw, while still preserving the Jericho/Edge feud for down the line.

Xero 03-31-2010 12:09 AM

I'm almost thinking, from those spoilers and it opening the show, that they may have Edge actually take it off him at the end of SD.

legendkillerRKO 03-31-2010 12:10 AM

swagger has been there about a year and half...he definately deserves a run with the title more than sheamus...

Mr. Nerfect 03-31-2010 12:11 AM

I hope Swagger gets a fairly strong reign with the belt. If they do Edge challenging Swagger, I hope Jericho takes them both out with a steel chair, or something. Triple Threat at Extreme Rules.

I think that would definitely bury the guy for good. Less than 24 hours reigns are never good.

Kane did that in 1998 and was never taken seriously as a threat for a couple of years, at least until he unmasked.

Yeah, it just seems like it woulda worked out so perfectly. This might have been their last chance to have a guy win MITB and then cash it on on Mania the same night (something that is speculated by the announcers every year)

I agree.

I also wouldn't put it past WWE to do it.

This could be an early April Fools’ joke. It would be cool if it happened, but until I see a detailed report, I’m skeptical.

Absolutely. Well, from an outsider's perspective, anyway. Sheamus obviously has the right attitude backstage and that sort of stuff. But it would have been so much better if Jack Swagger had been the one to beat Cena at TLC and become WWE Champion. It would have been an even smoother ride if Cena had retained the title up until Elimination Chamber, though, and they then did the Batista stuff.

But Swagger is someone I am intensely interested in seeing in the main event. The idea of Swagger facing anyone is really quite fresh to me right now: Swagger vs. Jericho, Swagger vs. Edge, Swagger vs. Mysterio, Swagger vs. Undertaker, Swagger vs. Hardy, Swagger vs. Kane, Swagger vs. Finlay -- it's all good. The way he has been booked recently also lends a vulnerability to his character. That so many are surprised he is World Heavyweight Champion is a huge indicator of that. The casual fan would buy into pretty much all those guys beating Swagger, and that can generate interest for his title matches.

What, exactly, were you expecting?

Mr. Nerfect 03-31-2010 12:18 AM

If the WWE re-signs Kurt Angle down the line, I definitely want to see Swagger vs. Angle.

Evil Vito 03-31-2010 12:19 AM

I do hope Swagger gets a somewhat lengthy reign with the belt. These short title reigns lately have been annoying me, so I'd love to see Jack hold onto it for at least 3 months if not longer.

I'm also assuming one of the champs will be drafted to SmackDown (Swagger most likely, unless they REALLY are trying to "shake things up" and move Cena as was rumored a couple years ago...don't see that happening though). From a "randomness" perspective that would be like 3 years in a row that a World champ has been drafted, but whatever. Jack on SD would be awesome

Although the WWE can be a bit unruly with who they move sometimes, I think Swagger moving over to SmackDown! in the draft was a very easy prediction to make. I very much expect him to be with the blue brand very soon -- if not now.

I'd mark out if Theodore Long tried to make Swagger defend the World Heavyweight Title on SmackDown!, and Jackpot $wagger was all "I don't work for you," and then got in a car and sped off. This would all lead up to a point where Swagger got drafted to SmackDown! and was all "Shit..."

Nevermind

Mr. Nerfect 03-31-2010 12:24 AM

Jericho will be fine. He is selling an injury sustained by Edge (his first, even if it is in a kayfabe sense), which is only going to intensify their feud. They might move away from the World Heavyweight Title, which is actually fine with me, because their feud has legs on personal issues alone. Seriously, just let Edge and Jericho go at it in a Last Man Standing Match or something at Extreme Rules, and just show Swagger during the show kicking back in his own lockerroom, tossing back some grapes as he watches two men he screwed over destroy themselves. Swagger could even get involved in the end, and knock down both guys for the ten count, and just dance around like a retarded gorilla in the ring. I guarantee the heat for that would be off the charts.

At least he's a happy product of incest. And a successful one.

I didn't check up on this when I asked it in the WrestleMania thread; but did anyone else notice just how happy Swagger was when he was making his entrance. It's like he got told he was winning just before he walked out. I actually got the feeling that he would win after that; but I ignored it and stuck to my guns of Drew McIntyre (even though his entrance was butchered short and he looked so depressed).

Splaya 03-31-2010 12:36 AM

There are numerous reasons as to why this could have happened.

Recently, as per Sheamus, the WWE loves to see what superstars can do with a 3 month title run. They want to see whether or not they could be a possibility for future title runs.

Secondly, maybe this is the WWE finally punishing Jericho for the Bar incident in Feb. Remember, after the incident happened, he went on to Win the World title. They never punished him for it. You couldn't not have him win it at the Elim Chamber, because that would have screwed up all of the Mania plans.

Third, I could see the WWE writers making Jericho claim that he is entitled to a rematch, Edge claiming the same thing. Long then says Triple Threat where Swagger wins.

My initial thought was that they were finally giving Jericho the just due and some credibility as champion....
