Official Smurfs Movie Epic Thread Win

From super-tall blue creatures in Avatar to...
3-apple high blue creatures in SMURFS!

Neil Patrick Harris, who displayed his song and dance chops during the Oscar telecast, has signed on for the key live-action role in the upcoming The Smurfs movie, which will combine CGI with conventional cinematography (see “Here Come the Smurfs”). Live-action/CGI veteran Raja Gosnell (Scooby Doo, Beverly Hills Chihuahua) will direct the film.

The vocal cast that will be providing the voices for the miniature blue creatures will include the 84-year-old comedian Jonathan Winters, who actually did some voice work for the original Smurf cartoons. Winters will voice “Pap” Smurf, while Cummings will provide the vocalization for “Gutsy” Smurf and George Lopez will lend a Latino tinge to “Grouchy” Smurf. Katy Perry will naturally provide the voice of the lone female Smurf, aka Smurfette.

Sofia Vergara will play a cosmetics executive married to the character played by Neil Patrick Harris (see “NPH in Smurfs Movie”) in The Smurfs, according to Hollywood Reporter. Vergara is best known for her role in ABC's Modern Family.

Jayma Mays and Hank Azaria have also been cast in The Smurfs.

Shooting begins in New York in the next week, according to the report.

Lock Jaw 03-31-2010 08:13 PM

Thought you were gonna say Sam Worthington was cast as a Smurf.

thedamndest 03-31-2010 10:02 PM

Hank Azaria is Gargamel. What a terrible article to not make that evident.

"Pap" Smurf WTF

Another childhood memory about to be ruined...

Lock Jaw 05-19-2010 04:47 PM

That's a pretty fantastic makeup job.

Though it is on Hank Azaria, not NPH.

How so, man? I hate that phrase.

Jeritron 05-19-2010 09:32 PM

I wonder if there were people who grew up on Steamboat Mickey bitching and moaning about The Great Mouse Detective raping their childhood

I swear, every time they do a live action/cgi take on an animated series I grew up on, it ends up being shit (I'm looking at you, Scooby Doo. And Transformers. And GI Joe.).

I will say, Hank Azaria looks like a dead-on Gargamel.

The problem is, will they try to "modernize it," thus killing what made the series fun?

If they take a they're all on drugs approach to it, I may like it.

Kalyx triaD 05-21-2010 04:50 AM

All that I understand, but how is it ruining your childhood?

Would a good remake improve your childhood?

Loose Cannon 05-21-2010 01:05 PM

alright, a Latino tinge to Grouchy Smurf

Big Fat Mike 05-21-2010 01:45 PM

All latinos are grumpy. Duh.

Let me re-read what I said:

Maybe I'm confusing myself with semantics, but 'Childhood Memory' is slightly different than 'Childhood.' I had somewhat fond memories of the Smurfs show. I am almost certain that they'll fuck it up, and people will be like "You watched that shit?" Hence 'Childhood Memory.' I think the only way my 'Childhood' would have been ruined is if some dude dressed up in a Papa Smurf suit raped me. I don't see that happening any time soon.

Secondly, I probably should have pointed out that I was being facetious. I figured it was obvious after the clarification.

Thanks for the clarification but my statement stands:

How can this ruin a childhood memory? Hell, that's even worse than what I asked before. And what do you care about people thinking the new Smurfs are what you liked as a kid? If they're that stupid to think they are one in the same their opinion should hold no bearing. That wouldn't affect your childhood memory at all.

And to adjust, the movie ending up good wouldn't improve your childhood memory either. It's a memory. Safe inside your head.

Vastardikai 05-22-2010 07:07 PM

Makes sense.

I should have said "This movie will totally NOT do justice to the original."

Kalyx triaD 05-22-2010 07:20 PM

I hear even the 80's toon was a reimagining of something (far?) older. Didn't look that far into it.

I feel bad for women having to get pap smurfs every year

Kalyx triaD 05-26-2010 10:14 AM

Kane Knight thinks I'm a hypocrite for hating on the concept of revisions 'ruining childhoods', despite my easily searched record of me defending all manner of remakes and adaptions. Just making public his idiocy.

That CGI looks awful. Like the lighting is so bad it just looks like a bad photoshop. I hope the whole movie doesn't look like that, but I'm talking out my ass if I really act like I give two shits about this movie anyways

Supreme Olajuwon 12-27-2010 03:25 AM

The character models don't look awful, but they do look really out of place. The one thing this movie has going for it is that at least the Smurfs are segregated from society so they're supposed to look out of place. With other stuff like Scooby Doo, Garfield, Alvin and the Chipmunks, and Yogi Bear, the characters were just placed in the film like they were normal live action characters and it doesn't work. The audience can't suspend belief. Gotta try and shy away from that.

So basically what might have been a watchable movie taking place in their 'world', we got this fish out of water zaniness.

VSG 05-28-2011 09:46 AM

lol that's horrible.

parkmania 05-28-2011 10:52 AM

At least Azrael looks relatively decent.

Lock Jaw 05-28-2011 02:32 PM

I dunno. Looks like it could be entertaining.

LoDownM 05-28-2011 03:20 PM

Had no idea Neil Patrick Harris was going to be in this.

Emperor Smeat 05-28-2011 06:50 PM

Was there ever an Irish/Scottish Smurf wearing a kilt in the cartoons?

I recognized most of them except for that smurf.

Kalyx triaD 05-28-2011 06:51 PM

I think so. Not interested enough to verify.

http://images3.wikia.nocookie.net/__...09px-Gutsy.png

No, he's new. He was created just for the movie and his name is Gutsy Smurf.

He's Scottish, so by "Movie Law", he has to wear a kilt, have ginger hair and say "Laddie".

I'm also expecting him to play the Bagpipes at some point during the film and possibly eat some Haggis....

VSG 05-28-2011 07:09 PM

I will watch the movie if Gutsy Smurf behaves like Fat Bastard around Smurfette.

Lock Jaw 05-28-2011 07:11 PM

What are you going on about? That isn't "movie law".... that's Nature's Law! Perfect depiction of a Scotsman. I imagine he also has a sword underneath his kilt, and is prone to yelling "FREEEEEEEDOOOOOM" a lot.

Cool King 05-28-2011 07:15 PM

Well us Scots do love our Claymores, och aye.

Lock Jaw 05-28-2011 07:20 PM

How does a Smurf become Scottish anyways? Don't they all grow up in the same village, and thus should all have the same customs, traditions, history, and accent?

VSG 05-28-2011 07:23 PM

Git in his bellay!

parkmania 05-28-2011 10:48 PM

BTW, it's not "Papa" Smurf, it's "Pap" (or Pappy, I forget which) Smurf.

Lock Jaw 05-28-2011 11:08 PM

Pretty sure it is Papa Smurf.

parkmania 05-28-2011 11:14 PM

Hmmm, imdb seems to back you up on that. I was sure I remember hearing early on about the change. They must have gotten feedback that said "Don't fuck with Papa."

EDIT: Found where I got it from, originally posted 8 Mar 2010. http://www.icv2.com/articles/news/17008.html

VSG 05-28-2011 11:26 PM

Can't believe Katy Perry is responsible for the "butch" voice of Smurfette.

Kalyx triaD 05-28-2011 11:34 PM

Can't believe Katy Perry is involved in anything not showing off her "epic" cleavage.

Oh, thought you were talking about the original Smurfs. Dunno if they changed it for the movie.

Kalyx triaD 06-17-2011 03:35 AM

Absolutely no bullshit: Spanish town goes blue specifically for Smurfs premier.

http://fastcache.gawkerassets.com/as...06/spanish.jpg

And they might stay that way.

VSG 06-18-2011 10:08 AM

Uh.. Ok.

Lock Jaw 06-18-2011 02:39 PM

Whole town blue themselves.

Next Big Thing 06-18-2011 02:39 PM
