No more "Mr. McMahon"

Vince McMahon's evil "Mr. McMahon" character is said to be finished, according to the latest Wrestling Observer Newsletter.

The character was spawned back in 1997 following the infamous Montreal Screwjob. McMahon's on-air character turned heel for the first time and it became the antagonist to the company's top star "Stone Cold" Steve Austin in arguably the best run in the history of the company.

With Bret Hart's return to WWE after 13 years, McMahon felt WrestleMania would be the perfect chance for Bret Hart to get his ultimate revenge and wipe out Mr. McMahon once and for all. The over-the-top beatdown he sustained at the hands (and feet) of the Hart family signified the end of the character.

McMahon is a firm believer in pushing younger acts and is not blind to the fact that he's in his 60's and the character more than ran its course.

Xero 04-01-2010 10:01 PM

I could see it.

Though they would have to establish a younger head figure to oversee the company in kayfabe. Without an ultimate boss to come into things once every great while things wouldn't seem right to me.

Someone has to be above the GMs, and if the Mr. McMahon character is dead they have no where to go.

They could just bring back the idea of the faceless "board of directors" I guess.

thedamndest 04-01-2010 10:03 PM

Jack Tunney III

Schlomey 04-01-2010 10:04 PM

awesome news. I love Vinny Mac but he needs to stay out of the ring and the spotlight. I do love the occasional Vinny Mac drop in though,.

BRING BACK COMMISSIONER REGAL

Xero 04-01-2010 10:07 PM

Before Vince was Mr. McMahon, and I'm talking before he was first stunned, say back before 96, did Vince ever come into factor in the storylines as the boss in any way whatsoever? Other than maybe a passing reference to the fact that Vince is the boss?

thedamndest 04-01-2010 10:10 PM

I think they always had a kayfabe president prior to 96-97.

Kane Knight 04-01-2010 10:12 PM

"Mr McMahon! Why now? Why not five years ago?"

Not to my recollection. The oldest authority figure I could remember was Jack Tunney, who was "WWF President" from the mid 1980s-1996. Then in '96, Gorilla Monsoon became the "President". After he stepped down or whatever, Sgt Slaughter became Commissioner, with the Mr. McMahon character becoming the head authority figure during this time.

Xero 04-01-2010 10:19 PM

Interesting. Thought they may have used Vince for SOMETHING.

Also, wasn't Piper in there somewhere after Monsoon?

thedamndest 04-01-2010 10:19 PM

Roddy Piper was in there somewhere.

Piper was an interim President during the time Monsoon was injured because Vader attacked him. That lasted from roughly the Royal Rumble to Wrestlemania XII, which was Monsoon's first night back.

For a brief period in between Monsoon and Slaughter. It's what led the whole Piper/Goldust debacle.

Juan 04-01-2010 10:24 PM

Xero 04-01-2010 10:26 PM

Makes sense.

That was all juuust before I got into wrestling so my histroy's slightly cloudy.

He was hinted at being the boss during the original ECW Invasion around February 1997 while he was still a commentator and from Lawler always saying Heyman should be grateful for Vince allowing him air time. Roughly 9 months later is when the "Montreal Screwjob" occurs and the "Mr. McMahon" character is born.

Maybe even earlier around 1995 when he 1st noticed ECW but not sure if it was ever mentioned on camera.

Mr. Nerfect 04-02-2010 02:53 AM

Wow. Doesn't seem right to me that the Mr. McMahon character goes out that way. I hope we see him again to pass the torch, or renounce his ways, or something.

Damian Rey 04-02-2010 02:54 AM

Vince's character has been drawn out for quite some time, and the "official" end to the character is about 5 years late. That being said, I get why they've decided now is the time, seeing as Bret was really the only feud left.

As far as the new authority figure goes, I think they need to bring in someone who's a familiar face but has been away for some time. They could run a storyline where it's made public that Vince has decided to hand over the authority role to someone new, thus stepping down.

Who this person is, I have no idea.

Mr. Nerfect 04-02-2010 02:57 AM

In my perfect world, it'd be William Regal. In a slightly less-than-perfect world, it'd be John "Bradshaw" Layfield, and he'd then fire Jerry Lawler and take over color analyst duties. Actually, fuck it -- that would be pretty perfect, too.

JBL calling the shots from ringside would be great, but I'd rather see him in an either/or role. I think he'd be great for commentary. He knows how to put guys over with the mic. Authority wise, he brings the fact that, unlike most GMs, he can actually defend himself, and is bigger than quite a few superstars.

Mr. Nerfect 04-02-2010 03:08 AM

Oh, I'd most definitely prefer JBL as a commentator to authority figure. When JBL talks about others, I find it entertaining; when he talks about himself I find it boring. I'd mark out for him replacing Jerry Lawler, as his commentary work with Michael Cole was great. You PPV team would then be Michael Cole, JBL & Matt Striker -- which would be awesome.

St. Jimmy 04-02-2010 03:15 AM

I feel like this was posted on 4-1-2010.

jskinnyg 04-02-2010 03:43 AM

If this is true, and it would not surprise me, then RIP Mr. McMahon... But i DO NOT see his character going out like this... 4-1-10

Droford 04-02-2010 05:00 AM

It'll be Mr. Helmsley in a few years.

Xero 04-02-2010 06:50 AM

It can't be just any wrestler as far as I'm concerned. It has to be someone close to the McMahons. Regal would be a complete let down. He wouldn't be able to live up to the Mr. McMahon character no matter how hard he tried. There's just not enough history there and he's just not over enough for it to work. Only real reason he gets heat is that he's a foreigner. That's not good enough for being what is essentially the head of the company in kayfabe.

I could buy JBL, though.

Shane would work if he weren't out of the company.

Could even buy Shawn Michaels, honestly. But that'd be at least a year away from happening.

Hunter will be the new Mr. McMahon character by 2018. All we have to figure out is who he's gonna screw.

Joesgonnakillyou 04-02-2010 07:38 AM

I love this, the character was born from the screwjob and then is put away by Bret Hart. It's good story telling.

He probably does intend to, but if another old legend who can't really wrestle any more wants a return he'll be back.

I thought it was odd that "Mr McMahon" didn't show up at MNR after Wrestlemania. Im a McMahon fan even if he's not in the ring, I think he is needed to be part of the show.

XCaliber 04-02-2010 09:33 AM

Wouldn't get your hopes up guys even on the off chance this is true i'd be willing to bet the reigns will be simply passed on to the next generation that being Stephanie McMahon of course.

Zeeboe 04-02-2010 10:01 AM

exactly what I said about a month or two ago. I am definately all for Mr McMahon being done. It's has been stale the last few years. I would still go with an on screen character and they could do a variety of storylines to which this certain someone has been given this authority

Innovator 04-02-2010 10:23 AM

I hated when he fought against current wrestlers, made them all look weak.

The character should have been done after the Hogan feud

Loose Cannon 04-02-2010 10:25 AM

yea, the whole Spirit Squad thing and then the god thing and Bobby Lashley was stupid. Couldn't stand any of that

Innovator 04-02-2010 10:29 AM

It didn't help that Lashley sucked, and they could have found better use for HBK on Mania

Jeritron 04-02-2010 10:41 AM

I thought the HBK vs Vince match was great

Vince was "dead" until Benoit went nuts and then Vince had to come back to address the situation.

Schlomey 04-02-2010 11:44 AM

Which sucks because the Vince dead angle could have been fucking good.

I shake my head every time I see anything to do with him. He was going to be such a huge star for years to come in my opinion. I still believe he would of been the heel John Cena. Meaning you have Cena as the ultra babyface and I believe he would of been the ultra heel. Like Ausitn and Rock. I still can't believe he was just wiped out the way he was. fucking bullshit

Yeah, I agree. He had potential but it was all squashed by his gimmick. I mean, I guess the WWE was hoping the backlash wouldn't be as crazy because I mean the Iron Sheik and Sgt. Slaughter were over back in the day.

Though wasn't it more UPN (the network that aired Smackdown back in the day) that had biggest problem with him which eventually led to his demise of that character?

Emperor Smeat 04-05-2010 02:25 AM

It wasn't soo much that UPN "hated" the character but more of bad timing since the whole Davari being carried off like he was sacrificed ending up occurring the same week as the terror attacks in England while both UPN and WWE decided to show the scene without editing it.

To be fair though the attacks ending up occurring too close to the show's regular airtime and past the normal editing period WWE does for Smackdown. UPN basically didn't want to be seen being supportive of the character anymore and WWE got rid of him instead of loosing UPN and other advertisers.
