up in the air, if you've ever been unemployed for a prolonged amount of time

Are we talking 'sad' or 'harrowing/depressing'?
Because like I dunno, Big Fish is a sad film, so is Eternal Sunshine. Something like Requiem for a Dream though, that is fucking utterly nightmarish, not 'sad'. |
Hurt Locker has some sad stuff in it.
Dr. Strangelove is pretty sad if you think about it. Paths of Glory (another kubrik film) Most comedies would be really sad if there weren't so much humour in them. i.e. Harold and Kumar, drive all the fuck around to get a ffucking burger. how fucking sad, they get almost fucking killed by rednecks and shit |
The War At Home (not the TV show. This was a movie that came out in 96')
Monster's Ball O Brothers |
Breaking the Waves
Dancer in the Dark Make Way for Tomorrow These are more soul crushing than sad though. |
Ladder 49

I never thought as Big Fish as a sad film, I actually felt uplifted at the end.
|
Don't know about great, but The Fall is definitely pretty good at least. Pan's Labyrinth is great and sad.
Shotgun Stories, Lars and The Real Girl, Welcome to Sarajevo, In The Valley of Elah, One Flew Over The Cuckoo's Nest, The Counterfeiters, Junebug, Brokeback Mountain, Shooting Dogs, No Man's Land, The Fountain. All very good to great and quite sad. |
Donnie Darko
My Girl |
Seven Pounds
Eternal Sunshine The Wrestler |
The Notebook :(
I love that fucking movie, but it's just so sad. |
My Life
Reign Over Me If you can watch either without crying at least once, you are a fucking liar. |
Royal Tenebaums and Life Aquatic are both light hearted and sad.
|
A Walk to Remember
|
Not a movie, but the Jurassic Bark episode of Futurama.

'Uplifting sad' as opposed to 'soul destroying sad' I suppose |

"Lilja 4-ever" is the saddest movie I have ever seen.
Little Children Paths of Glory About Schmidt Dancer in the Dark Synecdoche, New York Mean Creek Revolutionary Road House of Sand and Fog 4 Months, 3 Weeks and 2 Days Lonesome Jim (not overall but "inherently") Happy-Go-Lucky (like half really happy and half sad though) |
Terminator 2
I'm not trying to be funny, the ending made me so sad as a kid. Bah, it still does. |
