Best Summerslam
I honestly think that Summerslam, without the pressure of Wrestlemania, is the best PPV of the year. But what is your favourite ever? For me it's 91 or 92.... Discuss.
|
Whilst the majority of Summerslams have all be really good, I'd probably have to go with 2002. Not only were the matches great, but overall all the storylines and booking going into it was really solid.
|
90 - hands down
|
2000 was the first one I saw and still my favourite. An amazing PPV from top to bottom, it had a bit of everything. That's how they should be booked.
|
For me , 1996 because I did my English talk in school on the Mankind Undertaker boiler room brawl...THEN WE GOT TO WATCH THE WHOLE MATCH!!!
Note : I was only 16 at the time, so it was win. |
I have a soft spot for 98, mainly for the Ladder match and the entire build to Austin/Taker. Also because I was there.
|
I would hafta say the Warrior beating HTM for the IC strap was memory & of course the one I actually went to where Macho married Liz
|
Angle vs. Mysterio from Summerslam 02 was one of my favorite matches ever, and the rest of the card wasn't too shabby either. I still have to go with Summerslam 2000 for nostalgic purposes though.
|
Inad, a friend and I went to see the 2004 one in theatres, so that is my fav.
|
In theaters? Random...
2004 will be a stain on my memory as the PPV when Benoit's title reign ended. |
Yeah, they played it in theatres here. Was neat to see it.
None of us had jobs to afford to travel to see it. |

I think it was 2000. Had a great card.

91 had Bret Hart vs Mr Perfect. Plus, from a storyline pov, Bossman vs Mountie was amusing. 92 had Bret Hart vs Bulldog in possibly Davey's best WWF match ever.
|
2001 was great too. It had a fantastic card top to bottom, really. It probably doesn't get a lot of recognition because it took place during the Invasion, and the disappointing storylines probably overshadow the PPVs.

99 was good as well

And the matches on the card that were retarded were at least unmemorable. |
Edge vs Lance Storm was awesome
|
and Jericho vs Rhino
|
I guess, it was a long time ago, I just mostly remember hating the Undertaker/DDP feud.
|
Most of the Summerslams are some of my favorite PPVs of the year. My all time favorite is easily 2002, every match was solid and the crowd was on fire all night. After that it would be 2005, 2001, 2004, and 1994 with an honorable mention to 1998 for the awesome ladder match which is my favorite match of all time. 1991 and 1992 are pretty solid, the only one that I cringe sitting through is 1995, but when i think about it Diesel and Mabel could have been a whole lot worse, that wasn't even the worst part of the show in my opinion. Bertha Faye winning the women's title or Skip and Barry Horowitz takes that spot.
|
98 was one of WWF's best ppv's ever. Amazing main event, ladder match, and great angles and undercard. Love that PPV.
|
The ladder match between Rock and HHH was so epic. But i'm not telling you anything you don't know.
1998 Summerslam was my first SS so I have to go with that one. Just loved every match on the card. Even X-pac versus D-lo was HOT |
1992 for me. For my money, it doesn't get any better than Bret/Bulldog.
|
Can I just name some of my favorite SummerSlam matches? In no particular order...
Intercontinental title Bret Hart v. The British Bulldog (92) Ladder match, Intercontinental title Triple H v. The Rock (98) Intercontinental title Bret Hart v. Mr. Perfect (91) Million Dollar Belt Virgil v. Ted DiBiase (91) No Hitting in the Face Shawn Michaels v. Rick Martel (92) WWF title, Cage Match Bret Hart v. Owen Hart (94) Intercontinental title, Ladder match Shawn Michaels v. Razor Ramon (95) Cage match Mankind v. Triple H (97) WWF title Bret Hart v. The Undertaker (Guest referee: Shawn Michaels) (97) Love Her or Leave Her Street Fight Test v. Shane McMahon (99) Tag titles, TLC Edge & Christian v. The Hardy Boyz, v. The Dudley Boyz (00) Hardcore title, ladder match Rob Van Damn v. Jeff Hardy (01) Kurt Angle v. Rey Mysterio (02) Unsanctioned Street Fight Shawn Michaels v. Triple H (02) World Heavyweight title Randy Orton v. Unknown Champion (04) Ladder match for custody of Dominic Rey Mysterio v. Eddie Guerrero (05) Hulk Hogan v. Shawn Micheals (05) :shifty: Intercontinental title Rey Mysterio v. Dolph Ziggler (09) World Heavyweight Championship, TLC CM Punk v. Jeff Hardy (09) *** Tons of gimmick matches at Summerslam, and the Intercontinental title always seems to tear the house down. |

Although you did list Dolph and Rey Rey, which I haven't seen so maybe I am wrong.
|
Yeah, you fucker. That was the best match last year.
|
Actually, the TLC was really good too, but Dolph v. Rey was great. Watch it right now.
|
02 stands out for me strictly bc of HBK's return which I thought would never happen. Plus the match against HHH was a very very good match for someone who had not wrestled in 4 years.
|
tough question... most of them have been really good, but I'll have to say 1998 followed closely by 2002 & 1996

Yes Mysterio vs Ziggler was fantastic, classic Summerslam IC title match. I forgot all about it.
|
2000 is one of my favourites.
TLC II, Angle v Rock v HHH, Jericho v Benoit, even the Taker v Kane non-match was good. |
1. 2002
2. 2000 3. 2001 Three best SummerSlam's, three years in a row. |
1988
1989 1990 1991 1992 1994 1996 1997 1998 2000 2001 2002 2004 2005 |
it's always hard for me to do these Best Ever PPV things because the eras were just so diffferent. it's tough to compare 2002 to 1989. And I am always biased to the late 80's-early 90's.
I'll put it like this, if I only had one Summerslam to choose to watch for the rest of my life, I'd take Summerslam 1991. |
mine has to be 92, 98 and 99.
|
2000, TLC 1 was amazing.
|
Summerslam 2002 was my favourite. In the summer of 2002, it seemed like WWE got their act together after a year or so of week-to-week booking. Most of the Summerslam 2002 programs seemed to have been booked for a while. Most of the matches were awesome, and every match was at least good. Rock-Brock, HBK-HHH, Guerrero-Edge, Benoit-RVD, Flair-Jericho were all really good, while Angle-Rey must be on of the best PPV opening matches ever (although it was kind of short). Taker-Test and the Booker T-Goldust vs. Storm and Christian matches were good too.
|
2002 really got me into WWE
and 2004 was the only live event i've ever been to i pick those two. |

God, I love Triple H so much. |
An underrated match I think is Cena vs Orton at SummerSlam 2007. Pretty good match with a nice atmosphere.
|
summerslam 1994 - Bret Hart vs Owen Hart - steel cage match
I watched this on my 1993 - 1997 summerslam dvd set that was a great match |
Yikes... too many to pick just one fave. I haven't read all the other posts yet but I'm sure these have already been mentioned....
1991. Great crowd, classic IC bout between Bret and Perfect, good brawl between LOD and the Nasty Boys, entertaining Jailhouse match between Bossman and Mountie... heated six-man opener... DiBiase vs Virgil was better than it should have been, and heated... and the Savage wedding and wedding party snake attack angle were good too... barring a stinker or two (Hogan and Warrior vs The Triangle of Terror, IRS vs Greg Valentine) it was an amazing show by early 90s standards, and holds up today. 1992 was a spectacle on a par with a WrestleMania type environment. Lots of nothing on the undercard but the World title match was one of Warrior's better matches, the IC title match stole the show for the second year running (in fact I consider it better than the Perfect/Bret match) as Bulldog took the strap from his brother-in-law. The LOD vs Money Inc. match was okay for the era and heated too. 2000. You can see that my memories are much more clear of the less cluttered 80s and 90s than the 2000s as I would have to research to remember more than a couple of matches on this show, but I always remember loving it as the angle going into the main event (HHH vs Angle vs Rock) was one of the best WWE angles of all time (the love triangle), and the TLC match was fabulous. I seem to think Undertaker vs Kane took place here too, with it being their first interaction with Taker under the biker gimmick. Don't remember that match being worth much though. But the two matches I previously mentioned are good enough on their own to carry the rest of the show. 2002: Another one match card, but luckily it's a blinder. HBK vs HHH was awesome. Rock vs Brock was above average too. So they are my choices. |
I'd have to say 2000 was overall the best card but the following years weren't too shabby either.
|
91 and 92 are my two favorites. 98 would be 3rd I guess
|
summerslam 1999 had an awesome hardcore match
and Steve Blackman vs Ken Shamrock in a lion's den weapons match |
I would say...1998 as number 1 for me, because the storylines were hyped and built the entire summer, and it payed off. Not to mention, the hostile MSG crowd cheering for heel Rock. and lets face it, it was following the Mania where Austin finally won the title, and we all knew it was a matter of time before we'd get him and 'taker in a feud.
Second would be 2000, again, very good storylines leading in. I also liked 2001, just wish Angle would have won the strap, instead of by DQ...and we can all speculate, that if HHH hadnt gotten injured, he might have been in Angle's spot as defender of the company.... http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedi...erslam1998.jpg |
Summerslam 1990 will always be a favorite since it was one of the first tapes I rented as a kid
Summerslam 1998 is probably my all time favorite just because of the Stone Cold versus 'Taker and HHH versus The Rock ladder match loaded card top to bottom |
I vote for Summerslam 98 as well, it was the one I remember most
