New XBox 360

E3 2010: Xbox 360 Slims Down Today

The new Xbox 360 redesign is slimmer, quieter, and here now.

by Levi Buchanan

At its E3 press conference today, Microsoft announced the brand-new Xbox 360 redesign. Smaller and quieter, the new Xbox 360 comes with built-in WiFi and a 250 GB hard drive. The wait for the new Xbox 360 is short, too. Very short. The new Xbox 360 ships today in North America and will be in retail later this week. The machine costs $299 USD, the same price as the existing 250 GB model. In Australia, it will release on 1st July for $449 AUD and for $499 NZD on 9th July in New Zealand.

The new Xbox 360 is primarily glossy black. There appears to be more vents on it for heat dispersion. The front of the machine has a sharper indent than the current hourglass design.

<!-- start image div -->
<!--- end image div -->
As if that was not enough of a surprise, Microsoft also announced that anybody at the theater for the press conference would get their mittens on a new Xbox 360 even sooner: Microsoft is shipping them a new machine immediately. (As you can imagine, the IGN War Room was suddenly full of many frowny-faces.)

Kalyx triaD 06-15-2010 01:05 AM

It's actually amazing how consistent you are with this sort of thing.

DAMN iNATOR 06-15-2010 01:09 AM

Look, I know you covered it already in the VG news thread, but I felt as though this was a big enough announcement today by Microsoft that it deserved it's own thread.

That being said, that's all I have to say on the matter.

alvarado52 06-15-2010 01:19 AM

NO WAY, REALLY!? Dude that's CRASY!

DAMN iNATOR 06-15-2010 01:21 AM

I will say it does look pretty f'n sweet though. Wonder if they'll actually offer them in that "sleek" black color or if that was just a display model or whatever.

alvarado52 06-15-2010 01:25 AM

no yeah totally, the thing is pretty...i want one, but i mean...i would literally just be buying it for the look because i already have the network adapter and a 120gb hard drive.

DAMN iNATOR 06-15-2010 01:26 AM

Yeah, but for the "late adopters" or whatever, it could potentially be the perfect time for them to invest in a 360 if they were looking to.

El Fangel 06-15-2010 01:28 AM

They needed to do this with the original xbox.

Ogen 06-15-2010 04:06 AM

I'll be buying one, been wanting a quiet XBox forever.

Kane Knight 06-15-2010 08:28 AM

OMG! YOU DIDN'T USE THE VIDEO GAME NEWS THREAD!

*has tantrum*

Bad Company 06-15-2010 08:32 AM

I'm still wondering if this has the CPU and GPU in a single package.

Disturbed316 06-15-2010 10:07 AM

That looks sexy. Will probably get one providing the RROD issue has been resolved.

Kane Knight 06-15-2010 10:10 AM

I'd definitely wait to make sure the new archetecture doesn't suck. Though I don't plan on buying a new one for a while.

G 06-15-2010 10:11 AM

looks good

Dale writes:

So, BWAHAHAHAHAHAHA.

Nick and I were at an unboxing event for the newly announced Xbox 360 today, and it was there that he committed a sin that will never be forgiven. Well, it wasn't a sin as much as it was a total waste of a perfectly fine copy of Alan Wake.

You see, despite the warning on the front of the new Xbox 360, Nick picked up the system to move it from horizontal to vertical position while the game was booting. The resulting sound was close to that of starting a garbage disposal with a fork in it. After hearing the horrendous noise, Microsoft people immediately ran to our area with concerned faces. "Yeah, you can't do that," we were told. As you'll see in the video, to Nick's embarrassment, Microsoft's Bill Beldan pointed out the prominent warning sticker right there on the system's face, which clearly explained that you can't move the system when a game is in use.

Fail.

----------------

Sure, there was a sticker on the damn thing saying not to move it, but it isn't like he was tossing it around the room. They're planning on having gesticulating children play Kinect anywhere near this thing? Some games are going to be getting destroyed, people. Looks like everyone needs to be really, really careful around their new 360s while they are on or their games are going to get wrecked.

It's got a spinning disc in it. Unless it's got a spindle in it like a disc man I wouldn't move anything that had a disc spinning at the time for that very reason.

Remember, there's a class action lawsuit by people who got scratched discs from moving their consoles.

El Fangel 06-15-2010 06:35 PM

PSX and PS2 for the win!

Bad Company 06-15-2010 06:55 PM

what an idiot, don't know why you'd ever have your 360 vertical anyway

Ogen 06-15-2010 07:08 PM

Always have mine vertical, fits better amongst my stuff.

You never struck me as the type to buy into magical thinking.

Verbose Minch 06-15-2010 07:32 PM

I'm just gonna buy one, and get the 60 dollar or so year warranty on it from EB.

Anybody know the specifics for release yet?

Vietnamese Crippler 06-15-2010 07:34 PM

It's out within the week? What other specifics do you need?

Verbose Minch 06-15-2010 07:35 PM

Holy shit, really? Must have missed that.

Thank you. :)

Funky Fly 06-16-2010 02:32 AM

Not surprised. Since when does Microsoft pass up an opportunity to make money?

Vietnamese Crippler 06-16-2010 02:34 AM

I guess when I read "internal hard drive" I immediately associated it with the PS3 :o

At least it's still possible to transfer data over to the new models from the old ones.

Of course it's going to be quiet, there wasn't a disc spinning.

Kane Knight 06-16-2010 02:07 PM

Your disc drive doesn't run constantly, with or without a disc in it?

Purgatory 06-16-2010 03:55 PM

Mine doesn't. But, the fans are still kinda noisy.

Kane Knight 06-16-2010 05:37 PM

I was being facetious.

Vietnamese Crippler 06-16-2010 10:35 PM

The new Xbox 360 will NEVER show the three red lights EVER AGAIN.

Xero 06-16-2010 10:37 PM

So we'll just have a new thing to call failing X Boxes.

Vietnamese Crippler 06-16-2010 10:39 PM

What the hell is more effective than three red lights, though?

The disk drive opening and closing 15 times? The console self-destructing?

That's one way to do it, take out the red lights.

i hate the fact they're taking out MU support. After charging through the nose for what was the only way to store files you wanted to move (saves and the like, I know there was already USB support for music and shit) for most of the life of the console so far, it's kind of irritating that they're now making them completely obsolete.

On the other hand, I no longer use my MU anyway, so it's more annoying than in any way disruptive.

but hey, no RRoD. :D

Disturbed316 06-17-2010 12:51 PM

MU ports? :?:

Don't understand taking away the red lights, as they had a legit purpose.

PS3 has yellow.
Wii has red (I think)

Now the 360 has nothing to differentiate between "fucked up" and "just fine"? Only real reason is so people can't call it the RRoD anymore because it's bad for PR or whatever.

Unless of course they just put the light somewhere else so we could have a new name :D

#BROKEN Hasney 06-17-2010 01:44 PM

That ring of light was apparently expensive initially, dunno if they saved cost getting rid of the red light.

You'll be able to tell it's fucked up, it won't turn on ;)

Ohh pfft, it was more complicated than that :p

For certain errors certain quadrants would light up red or whatever. Not sure exactly how it works, only problems I had with my 360 were the time I accidentally knocked the AV cables out and the lights came on and when it died. And even then, no lights or anything. Turned on, but everything was fucked up and games would play for like a minute before turning green and freezing

On the other hand, I once left my PS3 on for 3 days on accident, and not only did I not even notice, it wasn't even warm when I found out ;)

How the Hell was it not even warm? You can fry an egg on my PS3, even when it's idle. I mean, it handles heat better than the 360, no doubt, considering the YLOD happens less than half as often, but Jesus, it only does everything...Including serving as a hot plate.

yeah i call bullshit as a 360 and PS3 owner. The PS3 runs hot after about 6-8 hours, let along 70+.

FearedSanctity 06-17-2010 09:30 PM

You can call bullshit all you want but it was perfectly fine. Not saying it was ice cold, but it wasn't what I'd call warm either.

Only about twice ever since I've gotten the thing has it gotten hot. Dunno if it has to do with the model or what, but I'm not being some lying ass fanboy here

This is why I have mine set to shut off with inactivity. Well, that and for some reason, my remote turns it on reliably but not off. It's not hard to get up off my fat arse and turn it off manually, but remembering to is another story.

alvarado52 06-17-2010 10:23 PM

yeah the PS3 turns on waaay too easy. I have it set (and the 360) to shut off after a few hours of idle, especially the PS3 because i dont even pay attention to the color of the little light.

That's how mine ended up on for a few days, I remember the cats running over it and hearing it beep on and then thinking "I'll turn it off in a minute", but then I forgot. And due to the way I had everything set up (everything on this big coffee table in the living room, TV on the front half, PS3/360/Wii behind the TV) I just didn't notice it until I tried to turn it on a few days later

El Fangel 06-18-2010 12:12 AM

I have left my PS2 on for a couple days and the thing was scorching hot.

I cant imagine a PS3 would be any different.

Kane Knight 06-18-2010 12:14 AM

So the Xbox 360 slim uses the X-Clamp setup deal.

FearedSanctity 06-18-2010 12:14 AM

I had a fan going the whole time as well, the system was still hot as fuck.

Sidenote, I went to a friends house unexpectedly for the weekend and didnt shut it off. It was the middle of summer as well.

lol, come on guy, you can't be serious.

I never said this was typical of all PS3s, I simply said on this occasion, freak occurrence or not, it wasn't hot. But still, of all the times I've had it on for 6-8 hours, only a couple times has it gotten warm.

But I really dunno, may have just got the freak of the bunch. It's one of the original 60GB models and I've never had any kind of problem. Had it for about 3 1/2 years

Don't worry about all the repair crap, just know that it has the meanings of 1-3 lights.

Again don't worry about the repair crap, just read up on the meaning.

FS was pretty much just affirming that the four lights served as error codes.

They're kind of a simplistic diagnostic.

FearedSanctity 06-18-2010 08:22 PM

Pretty much, though it is nice to know what they actually mean now :y:

Interesting read. Am seriously tempted to get this, found out I can get it half price if I trade in my older version.

Pre-ordered mine the other day, seems like a good move really, especially when I can get it for half price.

Extreme Angle 06-28-2010 02:10 PM

Right, shops near me are doing a deal where you get it half price if you trade in your 360 elite.
Is there any way I can put the save data onto a USB device and then transfer it to the new one? Without using a data transfer kit, as the 360 and hard drive will be gone before I have the new one.

Disturbed316 07-01-2010 04:35 PM

You can stick the saves etc on a USB stick and move it that way, or Game are going to be hiring out transfer kits for people to use if they need them, thats what they are doing round my way anyway.
