When did you figure out wrestling was not 100% real?
Growing up I use to think wrestling was 100% real, I use to even get upset and always wondered why ESPN never covered them. Then I started to realize that for some reason facial hair (this was in the early 90's) on a wrestler that didn't have any before they left automatically meant they were a "bad guy" now. So it was when Crush returned with the goatee, and I was able to predict a heel turn based solely on his facial hair appearance. And from there I just started realizing more unrealistic things.

It's still real to me DAMMIT!

YFF how old were you when you figured this out? Seems quite elaborate...

That's a pretty complex thing for an 8 year old to figure out... :shifty:
|
When I first started watching wrestling, my father made it a point to tell me it was fake. He paused a tape and showed how Hercules actually started falling before the clothesline ever hit.
|
What a bastard.
When Ric Flair joined WWF. |
I knew it pretty soon after I began watching it. I had heard before that it was 'fake' but I thought it was just something people said just to be jerks....kind of like sixty percent of everything said here. But as I watched it became apparent that it had to be an elaborate plan going on. I'll admit it was easier to pretend it was real back then though.
|
When I went to my first live WWF event in 1996 and saw the Undertaker walking around in street clothes. Man, that was like pulling on Santas beard and realizing it was a fake.

Another incident for me, was when I went to my first live event and when the Undertaker came out, the arena was not cold at all like the announcers always claimed on tv. |

Always knew it was worked, just couldnt figure out it was all done, like how they threw punches without anyone getting hurt and how they got the blood. That was the early 90s, i think vince had outed kayfabe by then himself though.
|
Really early, I must have been like 5-6. I think my older cousins told me but I'm pretty sure I would have figured it out around that time anyway.
|
I figured it out around 7-8 years old when I saw the undertaker. I knew dead people couldn't wrestle, unless they were zombies and he didn't eat anyone's brain.
|
The first time I saw Triple H lose.
|
When Bret went heel / joined WCW. I don't see how they're mutually exclusive.

WRESTLING ISN'T REAL!?

Christmas Day 1991. Brand new Hulkamania Forever VHS which my Nan spent the length of tutting and telling me how fake it all was. Utterly charming woman.

When my friend told me that Fred Blassie or possibly Captain Lou Albano took a lie detector test on 60 Minutes or some shit to prove it wasn't real.
|
I was aware that wrestling was fake before I actually started watching it
|
When I saw John Cena's Five Knuckle Shuffle.

Since wrestling was introduced in my life.

For a good year or so though I was in this odd predicament. I knew it was scripted yet was still a mark and bought into the characters and such. Good times. |
I didn't completely figure it out until I was 12/13. I remember arguing with people at school coz they said wrestlers 'get paid to lose'.
Gotta keep the flame alive. :y: |
Knew it was fake the moment I started wtaching it when I was like maybe 10.
|
when i was 6
|
I can't believe that the media were trying to get wrestling promotions to admit it's fake in the 80s and before as if there was any doubt about it. I don't see how anyone over the age of 8 or so can think it's real. I have heard than adults in many countries around the world think it's real.
|
I feel like I was watching a Ted Dibiase match when I was like five, and somebody was bleeding. My mom said "you know that's not real blood, right? It's just ketchup". Even though I was five, I thought my mom was pretty fucking stupid for thinking that the real blood was ketchup. I remember still thinking it was real for a while after that, but I can't really pinpoint where I realized that it was definitely fake.
|
Can't remember exactly but it occurred with either someone saying the matches were fixed or to notice certain moves and notice either the sound came from the mat or the leg of the wrestler.
Before that I never bothered to look for that stuff in a match and was more preoccupied cheering or booing for wrestlers. |

I remember when that Pro Wrestling Secrets thing aired on TV, and the next day at school everyone was trying to 'explain' pro wrestling as if they'd been pros for 20 years.
And by 'at school', I mean a bunch of 12 year olds. |
As for the blood, the funniest explanation came from a guy when I was 16, he 'knew' how they did everything. Apparently, wrestlers have small, skin-coloured blood packs stuck on their forehead. They're so thin you can't see them. Then they cut them open and out comes the blood.
I just humoured the guy and nodded my head. |

I'd always know from when I was about 6 that it was fake, but was in denial until the royal rumble one year when the undertaker apparently died and rose up through the stadium. Can't remember what year exactly, but that killed all belief for me.

Thread should be named : "When did you figure out wrestling was 100% fake."
Just saying. |
More or less always knew but the worked shoots towards the end of WCW used to confuse the fuck out of me when I was younger.
|
The only thing that really got on my nerves about the Exposed show is that they made it sound as though all of the signs were made by the companies.
"You don't think they actually brought those signs from home, do you?" Fuck off. :o |
knew it was a work since i started watching wrestling but the pro wrestling secrets show had me figured out what actually happened in the wrestling business.
|
Every time I watch that "it's real to me, damnit" video I cringe and hide my face.

When the Road Warriors attacked Dusty Rhodes and gouged his eye with their spike from the shoulder pads, i was bothered as a little kid. My Dad and Aunt had to tell me how it was all like a tv show and it was done just for fun, like everything else in wrestling. At the time i was just happy Dusty was alright.

I remember everyone telling me it was fake growing up, and on some level it registered, but I was probably 12 or so and I realized I knew exactly what was going to happen next in the match and "Why didn't he know that was coming? He does that same move every m-- Oh..." Plus, I always wondered why Bret Hart never turned around and hit the turnbuckles with his back like everybody else.
|
My dad broke the sad news to me pretty much the instant I mentioned that I wanted to watch wrestling. I mean, he humored me and took me to shows and stuff, but I was informed from the very beginning that it was staged.

When did you find out that TV Shows weren't 100% real? LOL As far as wrestling goes, I found out about the same time I got internet so late 1998. And I remember thinking "Theres no way that wrestling can continue being popular if people are able to get on the internet and find out its fake as easily as I did"..boy was I wrong. |

I had to tell her no and that "Pro Wrestling's Greatest Secrets" was all nonsense. She thought the same about blood too, she thought the blood wasn't real until I told her about blading. As for me finding out about it all being predetermined, (I hate using the word "fake") I can't actually pinpoint the moment or anything but I think it was around the time of Owen Hart's death or maybe a few months after it. I remember since he died, always knowing to some degree that wrestling is predetermined. Also, I hated Nick Bakay's narration of the program so much. He just sounded so condescending that I wanted to hit him with a blunt object. |
I just remembered. Here where I live, access to cable was installed around 1997. Now this gave greater access to WWE than what there was previous. This led to some people tuning back into WWE after a five year break. Cue people telling me at 14 that wrestling was now real. This was because of the attitude era being more realistic that the early nineties cartoon era that we had all grew up on.
|
Remember when people used to say that ECW was real?
