When did you figure out wrestling was not 100% real?

Growing up I use to think wrestling was 100% real, I use to even get upset and always wondered why ESPN never covered them. Then I started to realize that for some reason facial hair (this was in the early 90's) on a wrestler that didn't have any before they left automatically meant they were a "bad guy" now. So it was when Crush returned with the goatee, and I was able to predict a heel turn based solely on his facial hair appearance. And from there I just started realizing more unrealistic things.

Kapoutman 07-27-2010 11:18 AM

When I first started watching wrestling, my father made it a point to tell me it was fake. He paused a tape and showed how Hercules actually started falling before the clothesline ever hit.

The Mackem 07-27-2010 11:21 AM

What a bastard.

When Ric Flair joined WWF.

Steveviscious89 07-27-2010 11:23 AM

I knew it pretty soon after I began watching it. I had heard before that it was 'fake' but I thought it was just something people said just to be jerks....kind of like sixty percent of everything said here. But as I watched it became apparent that it had to be an elaborate plan going on. I'll admit it was easier to pretend it was real back then though.

dhellova guy 07-27-2010 11:45 AM

When I went to my first live WWF event in 1996 and saw the Undertaker walking around in street clothes. Man, that was like pulling on Santas beard and realizing it was a fake.

Man, that stings...seriously. Crushed.

Another incident for me, was when I went to my first live event and when the Undertaker came out, the arena was not cold at all like the announcers always claimed on tv.

I feel your pain. I went to a WCW houseshow in Jacksonville when I was around 8 and afterwards went to dinner with my dad and uncle only to see a group of wrestlers eating together, both faces and heels. Fuckin Flyin Brian ruined my belief....how dare he eat with that evil Barry Windham! That was the day my eyes were opened.

whiteyford 07-27-2010 12:15 PM

Always knew it was worked, just couldnt figure out it was all done, like how they threw punches without anyone getting hurt and how they got the blood. That was the early 90s, i think vince had outed kayfabe by then himself though.

BollywoodSingh 07-27-2010 12:23 PM

Really early, I must have been like 5-6. I think my older cousins told me but I'm pretty sure I would have figured it out around that time anyway.

Mike Honcho 07-27-2010 12:32 PM

I figured it out around 7-8 years old when I saw the undertaker. I knew dead people couldn't wrestle, unless they were zombies and he didn't eat anyone's brain.

BollywoodSingh 07-27-2010 08:46 PM

I can't believe that the media were trying to get wrestling promotions to admit it's fake in the 80s and before as if there was any doubt about it. I don't see how anyone over the age of 8 or so can think it's real. I have heard than adults in many countries around the world think it's real.

Anybody Thrilla 07-27-2010 08:46 PM

I feel like I was watching a Ted Dibiase match when I was like five, and somebody was bleeding. My mom said "you know that's not real blood, right? It's just ketchup". Even though I was five, I thought my mom was pretty fucking stupid for thinking that the real blood was ketchup. I remember still thinking it was real for a while after that, but I can't really pinpoint where I realized that it was definitely fake.

Emperor Smeat 07-27-2010 08:48 PM

Can't remember exactly but it occurred with either someone saying the matches were fixed or to notice certain moves and notice either the sound came from the mat or the leg of the wrestler.

Before that I never bothered to look for that stuff in a match and was more preoccupied cheering or booing for wrestlers.

I remember when that Pro Wrestling Secrets thing aired on TV, and the next day at school everyone was trying to 'explain' pro wrestling as if they'd been pros for 20 years.

And by 'at school', I mean a bunch of 12 year olds.

Rammsteinmad 07-27-2010 10:26 PM

As for the blood, the funniest explanation came from a guy when I was 16, he 'knew' how they did everything. Apparently, wrestlers have small, skin-coloured blood packs stuck on their forehead. They're so thin you can't see them. Then they cut them open and out comes the blood.

I just humoured the guy and nodded my head.

Man I remember that! That was VERY graphic for back been, crazy as I think about it now, because you would never think that would be allowed back then.

I remember everyone telling me it was fake growing up, and on some level it registered, but I was probably 12 or so and I realized I knew exactly what was going to happen next in the match and "Why didn't he know that was coming? When did you find out that TV Shows weren't 100% real?

LOL

As far as wrestling goes, I found out about the same time I got internet so late 1998.
And I remember thinking "Theres no way that wrestling can continue being popular if people are able to get on the internet and find out its fake as easily as I did"..boy was I wrong.

That part got on my nerves too when I watched it. I remember watching it when it was first shown and my mum came into the room when that part was on and she believed it. It wasn't until a few years later though that she actually said to me while I was watching SmackDown "They're all given those signs, right?".

I had to tell her no and that "Pro Wrestling's Greatest Secrets" was all nonsense. She thought the same about blood too, she thought the blood wasn't real until I told her about blading.

As for me finding out about it all being predetermined, (I hate using the word "fake") I can't actually pinpoint the moment or anything but I think it was around the time of Owen Hart's death or maybe a few months after it. I remember since he died, always knowing to some degree that wrestling is predetermined.

Also, I hated Nick Bakay's narration of the program so much. He just sounded so condescending that I wanted to hit him with a blunt object.

The Mackem 07-29-2010 08:14 AM

I just remembered. Here where I live, access to cable was installed around 1997. Now this gave greater access to WWE than what there was previous. This led to some people tuning back into WWE after a five year break. Cue people telling me at 14 that wrestling was now real. This was because of the attitude era being more realistic that the early nineties cartoon era that we had all grew up on.

RR '94 - Providence Civic Center (now the Dunkin' Donuts Center) in Providence, RI. I was there that night, it was my first ppv in person, and I was like  I was 17 at the time. That was also the same show where Owen kicked Bret's leg right out of his leg [sic].
