Super Meat Boy
So this comes out tomorrow, and I wasn't really stoked at all until I saw Giant Bomb's Quick Look, and read today that they were lowering the price from 1200 MSP to 800 MSP until early November.
I've never been a huge fan of platformers like this, but this one has a ton of personality. Probably going to pick it up, probably just so I can try and spend 2400 MSP this month to get the 800 point rebate MS is doing. <object width="640" height="360" data="http://media.giantbomb.com/media/video/flash/flowplayer-3.2.4_10005.swf" type="application/x-shockwave-flash"><param name="movie" value="http://media.giantbomb.com/media/video/flash/flowplayer-3.2.4_10005.swf" /><param name="allowfullscreen" value="true" /><param name="allowscriptaccess" value="always" /><param name="whiskey-video-id" value="3387" /><param name="flashvars" value='config={"key":"#@b549b3cbe0f4ce68961","clip":{"scaling": "fit"},"canvas":{"background":"#000000","backgroundGradient":"none"},"playlist":["http://media.giantbomb.com/uploads/2/23534/1559035-ms.png", {"autoPlay":false,"url":"http://media.giantbomb.com/video/vf_supermeatboy_ql_101810_1500.mp4"}],"plugins":{"controls":{"url":"http://media.giantbomb.com/media/video/flash/flowplayer.controls-3.2.2_10003.swf","autoHide":"always","timeColor":"#cc0000","bufferGradient":"none","volumeSliderColo r":"#333333","durationColor":"#ffffff","sliderColor":"#333333","tooltipTextColor":"#ffffff","backgro undGradient":"none","timeBgColor":"#000","borderRadius":"0px","tooltipColor":"#000","buttonColor":"# cc0000","sliderGradient":"none","progressColor":"#cc0000","bufferColor":"#666666","volumeSliderGradi ent":"none","buttonOverColor":"#990000","progressGradient":"medium","backgroundColor":"#111111"}}}' /><param name="wmode" value="transparent" /></object> |
I've played Meat Boy on Kongregate many times and I love it - wish I had a 360 to play this. Game looks fucking amazing.

Loved the video, hated the people playing it.

But yeah, I mute them sometimes. Still always prefer their videos over any of the other gaming sites. |
Might pick it up right away if I like the trial. Video looks great, but nothing compares to hands on experience. If it's only ok, I'll deal of the week it up down the line.
This looks awesome.
Also, what was wrong with the guys in the podcast? Seemed a lot more tolerable than most "try too hard" video commentaries. |

Looks great. The controls on the flash game are immensely frustrating so if they've fixed that I will be picking this up.
This game is amazing fun. Highly recommended.

Being more tolerable than other tryhards is still annoying. |
Quote:
lol yeah.
They just seemed like a couple of chill dudes playing a videogame. Dunno what annoyed you about them. |
Damn, third world boss is fucking tough.
That piece of shit. |
I tried the demo. It's ok but not great. It's basically N+ in colour with added nods to games here and there, judging by the demo.
Finally bought it today. Everything about the game is great, from the nods to the music. Its genuinely hilarious too.
lol yeah, cracked up after beating the first two bosses.
Quote:
Really surprised this is even an issue. I'm not sure anywhere but TPWW would people whine about me disliking the voiceover on a gameplay video. Especially when the best argument is that they're "more tolerable." HI PRAZE GUIZE Anyway, loving the demo. I spent a lot of time trying to get one of the bandages, died like 3,000,000 times, gave up and beat the level. It was awesome watching all my little meat boys running around dying, until just the one hit the bottom. It's amazing the variety in difficulty. The two levels after that one, I did in one or two lives. The only thing is, I can't get it just yet because I'm saving my points for ZOMBIE BEARZ. I hope it's still 10 bucks next time a snag a points card, because  |
Yeah, getting some of the bandages is ridiculous. Especially in dark world levels.
Lost a shitload of the levels I had beaten because of the notorious save bug. Not gonna hit the replay level button until they fix that shit.
Beat Dr. Fetus. Eat it, chumps(i.e. mitchables and boomer, the only other people who play this. Seriously, what is wrong with you fucks? buy this game.)
I just gave my old 360 to my brother because I'm waiting on my holiday bundle 360 from Amazon. Cannot wait to get back to it. Its killing me...but I need to be working on Valkyria Chronicles anyway.

Bought it late last week, played a lot over the weekend. Really dig it, enjoy replaying levels too. Even fun playing with friends. Fun to watch and pass off controller after awhile. Good times.
Fucking fuck, you have to beat all the dark world levels to get the real ending.
Also, the world after The End is ridiculous hard. |
Quote:
Except being more fun, more engaging, and more addictive. But those aren't difficulty related. |
Right, unlocked all the dark levels. Now to beat them. Second ending best be worth it.
Quote:
My thumb is killing me right now.
Yeah, after dying about 100 times on one dark world rapture level I had to put it down. Whole left side of my hand was aching.
Yet I will inevitably come back for more. |
I just spent three hours to unlock The Kid. Fuck me I'm exhausted. Probably the hardest levels I've ever played in a platformer. When I finished the first one, I was beyond elated. Then the 2nd part loaded. Repeat when the third part loaded too. At least I have him for bandage collection now.
Yeah, just spent an hour finishing teh internets and playing the dark world boss, and then another hour getting the kid. But I completed all three. Real ending is only like 15 seconds longer than the first, but it's pretty funny.
5,278 deaths later and I'm only at 70% completion. Fuck me, this game might literally kill me before I get 100%. Never wanted to get all achievements or 100% a game before, but I really want to do it for this. Also, good to see Boomer catching up, and things getting close on accomplishments. Was actually going to watch a movie, but then I saw Boomer was playing, and was all "Oh no you don't motherfucker!" Pretty sure whoever holds the top score in this on tpww, is official TPWW King of 2D Platformers. |
I've basically stopped playing Valkyria Chronicles again because I can play this in small bursts. Unfortunately, I don't play Super Meat Boy in small bursts; I can't put the motherfucker down.
Just got this. It's amazing. I'm not normally a 100%/collector, but shit, in this game I am. Spent like ten minutes trying to get a fucking bandage.
Yeah, wait til the later stages. The amount of time you spend trying to get one bandage, sigifigantly increases.
I decided right from the get-go this would be my first game where I would get all the achievements. I'm at 65% completion at the moment, and I've already 100% the first three worlds (and the current Internets levels, which don't really matter I guess). Barely into Rapture...will probably just beat the game twice right near the end. I like being able to switch from easy to hard.
And The Kid was worth it. Got a ton of really easy bandages today thanks to him. |
Yeah, beat a bunch of dark world rapture levels with him.
Just spent like 30 minutes on the last level of The End and still haven't beaten it. Biggest problem I've had in the game.
Haven't touched the dark worlds yet, but have an A+ on every level up to now. The game's hard, but it's a ridiculously fun hard. Never had this much fun in such a frustrating game. Have to say that this is easily the best original IP I've played in years (probably since Shadow of the Colossus), and the best platformer since NSMB/NSMBWii. |
Spent a few hours to get to 70% completion yesterday. Still have barely touched Rapture. My Light/Dark world completion is about to be the same. Just going to start beating the game one level at a time until the very end. This S-Rank is going to be sweet as hell, just don't know how long its going to take me.
I've unlocked all the dark world rapture levels, and let me tell you. It's going to take a while. Even with the kid, those retractor beams or whatever, are a giant stinky whore.
Tried working on getting The Kid, not going to do that anytime soon
You guys and your talk of the Kid and all this stuff. You're gonna end up making me spend my free MSP on this.
Yeah, tried the first part of the Kid stage for like 5 minutes and just gave up lol.

Got the Kid. Showed my one friend the level the other day. Mentioned to a different one today, so we showed it to him. Three of us took like 10 minute turns on first level. Played that for maybe 3 hours or so. They never landed once, I eventually completed it. We did same for 2nd level a bit, then they left as at that point were already together for like 15 hours that day. Beat it like 10 minutes after they left. Then level 3 was probably my least favorite, just annoying but thankfully didn't take as long as 1. Like should want to go to bed right now, but on such an adrenaline high from it all its ridiculous.
I felt the same damn way. I was seriously so amped after that level, I just wanted to keep playing because I knew everything else would feel easier and I needed to cool off.
Also played this game for probably six or seven hours yesterday. I don't do that with games most of the time; I usually play in small sessions. I believe I'm at 90% completion. I've got 100 bandages (out of 101), and just the Dark The End and the majority of the Cotton Alley to play. |
101%. Victory is sweet. Don't even care about the glitch levels at this point...I'm done with SMB for the time being.

And Team Meat's comeback: http://cache.gawkerassets.com/assets...2/petagrab.jpg http://cache.gawker.com/assets/image...c/original.jpg |
Tried playing the game, was not good at all. Wall jumps were rough, gave up on level 2 cause of the controls.
Talking bout Super Tofu Boy. Super Meat Boy plays wonderfully.
Super Meat Boy is one of the current Steam sales for like 3.75. Finally broke down and bought something on Steam. Well, two thingsa, as I now own Plants vs Zombies on PC Kinda sad, as I have it on Ecks Blah as well, but between the deal and the fun of taking it with me on my notebook....)
Yeah I gifted a copy to my brother. Hope he likes it.
Merry Christmas, I spent $4 on you.

SMB has the same initials as Super Mario Brothers heh.

Really?

And I applaud your decision in purchasing this game. Probably my favorite game to ever hit arcade. I am incredibly biased toward 2-d platformers though. Just hope you like dying. A lot. I am up to 5000- deaths, and I'm pretty damn good at these types of games. |
I grabbed this:
http://www.dealextreme.com/details.dx/sku.31880 For just over 10 bucks, you can't argue. |
Never really got into the wired controller thing. Still have the one that came with my system, but all the rest are wired.
I do not sit 10 feet from the tv, nor do I leap around the room like spider monkey. And I keep the area pretty neat, so the wires never get tangled. That said, hasney's link looks like the way to go, if you already own a wireless controller, which you likely do. |
Quote:
So I spent ten dollars on a wired PC controller. Probably get a wired 360 controller like Fignuts suggested, but I just spent a ton of cash on presents for people and didn't want to spend another 40 bucks if I could get something cheaper. |
Ah right, I've got a pad linked to my PC and one for my 360 so only have to re-sync when people are over.
I have friends over frequently. I wouldn't even give a crap if I could sync it up without powering on my 360 as a result.
It's a shame the 360 pads can't be plugged in like PS3 pads. Wait...Will a Sexaccess/DS3 work with games like this? |
I meant specifically this game. Several of the games I picked up in Steam have specific mentions of the 360 controller, and since this one uses a diagram of one...
I guess I'll go dig out my controller and find out the easy way. I've hadf my PS3 controllers hooked to my PC, but never had any games to use them on.... |
I probably wouldn't have even asked if I knew where my controllers were, but I don't play PS3 games often.
Yeah, Update 4 allowed more customisable controls apparently.
I noticed. Holy Crap, I can emulate a 360 controller.
This may be out of your pay grade, but do you know if there's an XP version? Only my laptop runs Vista. |
Nevermind, I should read. :p
I love that you get an achievement for unlocking Tofu Boy.
I changed the world! also, the fact that the unlock code is petaphile. They did a good job of digging at PETA after the STB "parody." |
This is on sale again for 800 msp in the holiday deal on xbla if anyone's interested. Probably gonna jump in.
I'd totally do it if I didn't have it on Steam already.
Though the whole "you have to be connected to the internet" thing is kinda dumb. My notebook won't run Steam in offline mode. |
Really? If there's an Internet connection present it won't always work offline, but if you disconnect the net and then run Steam, it's usually fine.
Quote:
I'm not the only one to have this problem, looking at both the Steam forums and the web in general. |
Yeah, that's about right.
Super Meat Boy is the only game I've ever played that caused me to throw my controller across the room in disgust. It can be so infuriating, but I do love it.
I don't mind the difficulty on this game, but the glitches piss me off. IT's one thing to lose due to timing, and another entirely to lose because you jump through a wall or fall through the floor. Or to have the jump button not work at all. I thought that one was my PC, but I'm maxing out at like 20% system resources used, so I doubt it. And what's got me right now is I went back to snag Ogmo, and his wall jumps keep jumping straight up regardless of controller direction (or neutrality). Not all the time, but when you have to make five tiered wall-to-double jumps in a row, and it's happening once in most of those five, that's pretty goddamned big.
Oddly enough, before this I spent like 20 minutes in a Dark World without even giving a shit about all my deaths. I play as Ogmo and get wall-jump fucked, and now I feel rather burned. Though I've discovered I can sometimes tripel jump.... Though there are several well-documented glitches, I do sort of expect some tard to pop in and be all "WTF are you talking about. This game is perfect!" |
I've not encountered any glitches, really, except the jump button not working one in a thousand times. Also, just today, I paused the game and the timer wasn't moving. Not sure if it would have registered as 0, though.
Though I've found levels that I can beat in ways I shouldn't be able to (I assume). I beat a level with a 30 second time limit in like 2 seconds once. |
Yeah, can't remember seeing a single glitch on the LIVE version.
Got A+ on all light levels. Haven't put much effort into the dark levels.
I have an A+ on all light and the first two dark worlds. Recently got back into the game.
Darkworld is disgusting. But nothing is more frustrating than the extra world.
Quote:
I don't think anyone would deny that, it's just that we haven't really encountered any. Or at least notice them.
I know that if I think I'm fucked I just restart, there's a chance that I just don't notice them because I do it so fast and don't question it. |
I mostly just can't comment on the frequency of them in the Ecks Blah version. I mean, you both could be lucky, or it could simply be a more stable release. The one glitch I know that seems to be both prevalent in the XBLA release and common enough it gets mentioned a lot, is an issue with boss stages not doing the right things...Doctor Fetus not chasing you, for example, making the stage unwinnable.
You'd think with the 60 PC updates so far, it'd be pretty well fixed by now. Only downside to the PC version is I want some of the 360 bonus characters. It's amazing how I can play one of these levels like 500 times in 20 minutes and keep telling myself "almost there...One more try..." |
I only met one glitch on my way to 100%: the dreaded save glitch. Hit me two or three times. Read up on it and avoided causing it after I had to redo a couple of hellish levels.
omfgggg just beat the kid
Quote:
Took me about 35 minutes for the first level, a good 30 for the second, and about 15-20 for the third. Took a lot of breaks.. lol
So I played this today for the first time in months, and saw that there are a whole bunch of new worlds in Teh Internets section.
So I figured I'd bump this to pass the word. They are all mad difficult though so be ready. |
