King of the Ring returning next month
From PWInsider:
The King of the Ring tournament will be resurrected once again by WWE for the 11/29 three hour episode of Raw in Philadelphia, PA. |
Interesting.
|
Ya, read the press release. I don't like these 3 hour KotR tournaments so much, it was so much fun when spread over 2 months or so.
|
Black Cena wins.
Seriously though, it'll more than likely be either Del Rio, Punk, or Morrison that wins it. |
Barrett will win it me thinks.
|
Awesome. Would be pretty cool if they held qualifiers on Raw and Smackdown the week (or weeks) before to hype it and make it look as big as it used to, but they probably wont.
|
This means one of three things.
1. William Regal will be getting a new tron. 2. William Regal is winning, so they don't have to make a new tron. 3. William Regal will be released, so they don't have to make a new tron. |
I hope it's 2.

Imagine if the "win" Santino got over Sheamus was just the start of a King Santino run???

Yaaaaaaaay......now bring back Brawl for All.
|
Dolph Ziggler is winning. You heard it here first!
|
Would be good if they included both Smackdown and Raw wrestlers so then Swagger would have a chance to own two crowns.
If Swagger won, he could give his King of Oklahoma crown to the Swagga Eagle and keep the KotR crown for himself. |
Don't really care if it is only one night... make it over a month and with 32 (or even 64) wrestlers and WWE will have my interest.....
|
Im excited for it, KOTR was a great concept, would be better to be spread over time but one night only is good, never know maybe WWE will see people want this and make it a regular event again, we can live in hope can't we.
|
I wish it was a PPV instead of MITB.
Just hope nobody shit like Regal wins it this time. Wut a letdown. |

16 guys is well enough, take the top 8 midcard guys from each brand and have them face each other in branded qualifiers and you have a PPV quality tournament ready to go.
|
I liked the last King of the Ring quite a bit, and it was a three-hour deal.
|
Yeah, Regal and Punk had an awesome match
|
Here's who I'd have in a 16 man tournament.
RAW Punk Danielson Zeke Husky or McGillicutty Ryder Regal (only because he would be defending) Morrison Truth SmackDown! Christian Ziggler Rhodes Swagger Kofi MVP Kaval McIntyre They have plenty of talent to fill out a 16 man tournament. 32 is pushing it mainly because I don't think I could pull 16 half-decent guys from RAW. SD wouldn't be that big of a challenge. They have the stronger undercard in terms of amount of talent. |
Will they crown the new King of the Ring on RAW that night?
|
This is awesome, I am a HUGE supporter of King of the Ring, it was always my favorite PPV as a kid. I hope this bodes a great push for somebody.
|
I mean Daniel Bryan by the way.

'King Kofi Kingston' and then they can change his gimmick to a white supremist and have him wrestle in a white hooded robe and shit. That would be sik.
|
Would be awesome if it meant anything at all.
Way back when, if a guy won king of the ring, he'd be in line for a decent push at the very least. Now, a guy wins and "Yay _________ won KOTR" and then moving right along... |
Miz or go home.
|
There are plenty of guys on the roster worthy of winning this
|
I'm glad the King of the Ring is back. There are so many guys who could use the win. John Morrison, CM Punk, Jack Swagger, Dolph Ziggler, The Miz, Kofi Kingston, Alberto Del Rio, Sheamus and even Santino Marella could get a boost from it (if it turned into something). My prediction right now is that Morrison wins it. There seems to be renewed interest in pushing him, and I think the time is now. Especially with The Miz holding the Money in the Bank briefcase. Let those guys rise up together.

Lesnar went on to get the biggest push in history and beat the rock at Summer Slam. 4 year downtime. Booker won, started the King booker gimmick, wont the WHC, Started a Stable, won Night of Champions over Big Show and Cena (or whomever was raws champ) and held the title for a long reign then left the WWE. Regal got a monster push and was Raws GM as well. He was in for a huge push that had already started and then he got popped for Wellness. Basically you are a fucking idiot |

In all honesty, the only guys who got nothing from winning KotR were Mabel and Billy Gunn.
|
I liked in 2002 when the winner would receive the Summerslam title shot, it made it more important than it was already.
|
I'm kind of glad they don't do that now. It seems it's too easy to get a title shot these days. Win the RR, get a title shot. Win the MitB, get a title shot. Win NXT, get a title shot.
|
Be John Cena, get a title shot. Be Batista, get a title shot.
|
I love the idea of this being a bi-annual event where the winner adds some King themes into his gimmick.
Imagine the FIRST Straight Edge King. or Im the king, and IM AWESOME. |
I'd say this theme fits the King gimmick pretty well:

I think its a serious possibility.
Remember that 'McMahon bastard son' storyline they fucked up. |
Bring back Haku for the tournament and give it to him.
|
Also, I feel that the King winner works best as a heel.
KING Alberto Del Rio. He would play it up well. |

Awesome.

Also, Regal was a fucking beast en route to becoming KotR for 2008:

Anyone think it would be worth it to to KOTR Raw?
|
It's usually always worth it to go to Raw as long as it's nearby and not too expensive. Live wrestling is a blast
|
Xero, are you going?
|
Not sure yet. I'll let you know if I can.

Limiting this to 8 guys is going to be hard. They could do matches in the weeks before the event, then do the 8 on that night. They clearly have the roster to do 16.
Make Daniel Bryan vs. Kaval the final, and have Kaval go over. It would be a step forward for him, and King of the Ring is usually good for that. |
2010 King of the Ring:

King Miz!
|
If Miz won a King of the Mountain match, he'd be the King of the Mizin.
|
I still think the intended booking for 2008 was fairly clear. The WWE can fuck up even the simplest things, though, so maybe it wouldn't have turned out like this, but:
Triple H was the WWE Champion at the time of William Regal's corronation. Since he is a big supporter of Regal's, I could have seen Triple H dropping off the WWE Title to Regal in a match where Regal used his powers as GM to essentially eliminate any chance of him losing. Regal would then be pursued by guys like Mr. Kennedy and Triple H, using his GM powers to ensure he always kept the title. Eventually, CM Punk would cash in on William Regal -- under Punk's own terms. There the tyrannical reign of William Regal would end, the new WWE Champion would be the man Regal actually defeated to become King -- CM Punk. |
As for this year, I'd go with 16 guys from each brand:
RAW: CM Punk Daniel Bryan David Hart Smith Ezekiel Jackson Goldust The Great Khali John Morrison Mark Henry The Miz R-Truth Santino Marella Sheamus Ted DiBiase Tyson Kidd Wade Barrett William Regal SmackDown!: Alberto Del Rio Big Show Caylen Croft Chavo Guerrero Chris Masters Cody Rhodes Dolph Ziggler Drew McIntyre Edge Jack Swagger Kaval Kofi Kingston MVP Rey Mysterio Trent Barreta Tyler Reks |
HHH returns and wins...

To ME, the King of the Ring ended in '97, after Triple H won it.
|
who would you like to see win the upcoming king of the ring?
not sure if it's gonna be both brands, my gut says it is, so i'd like to see christian. i think it's the right time for him to shine.
|
Punk
|
Wade Barrett or Goldust

Mr. Jackson
|
I don't think Barrett needs the KOTR title, especially since he might be WWE champion by then.
Here's some quick guesses at the one-night tourney. Raw First Round: -Daniel Bryan beats William Regal (Regal has to get a chance to defend his crown) -John Morrison beats Ted DiBiase SmackDown First Round: -Kofi Kingston beats Dolph Ziggler -Alberto Del Rio beats Kaval Semi-Finals: -Daniel Bryan beats John Morrison -Alberto Del Rio beats Kofi Kingston Finals: -Alberto Del Rio beats Daniel Bryan via Ricardo Rodriguez interference |
I have a feeling the tournament could consist of "Dashing" Cody Rhodes, Drew McIntyre, Jack Swagger, MVP, R-Truth, Daniel Bryan, Goldust, and one of the Nexus members (not Barrett).
|
I'd like Ted DiBiase to win it because he needs some sort of gimmick to get him over. Failing that, Swagger or Del Rio.
|
Quote:
Well since its who we WANT to win, I'm picking Goldust. Would like to see it come down to Cody Rhodes vs. Goldust actually. Can see Alberto Del Rio winning- "Rey Alberto Del Rio" Can continue on the Rey Misterio feud by having Del Rio say "They call you Rey because its your name- they call me Rey because I'm the King" |
I think Daniel Bryan, CM Punk, John Morrison, Kaval, Drew McIntyre, Cody Rhodes, or Ted Dibiase are the best choices for me. In my opinion, I hope it's anybody but the Miz. Even Alberto Del Rio wouldn't be bad. Using this to establish a newer superstar or giving an established superstar a bigger rub eg. CM Punk.
|
The Boogyman
|
I'd either like to see Christian or Evan Bourne, but they are both out on injury.
So I would say I would like it to be either Alberto Del Rio or Goldust actually. |

I'd ;like to see who is in first....I forget which date does it take place?
|
King Punk is my top choice. The promos would be amazing. Punk deserves to be the headliner and main character on RAW, and KOTR could help push him in that direction. He's just too good.
King Kaval could be awesome too, especially if they continue to have him lose all these matches, only to take King of the Ring and continue to pursue success afterward. |
Knowing WWE Kaval would win KOTR and continue his losing streak.
|
I feel it should be someone that needs to be pushed, but someone that doesn't need it i.e. The Miz or Wade Barrett. They don't need the King title.

I think Morrison shoukd win it, if he's gonna feud with Sheamus he needs the credibility boost.
|
König des Ringes?
Dis ees ze most exzellent of ze ideas to date. |
Bring back Alex Wright and make him King of the Ring.
|
A German King. That'll be the day.
|
You bastards should be vishing to push me too much furzer.
Einen Konig from GERMANY would be magnificent, just like ze old days. |
You should team up with Choviko Man.

Alberto Del Rio vs. MVP
Daniel Bryan vs. Jack Swagger Ezekiel Jackson vs. Sheamus Goldust vs. Ted DiBiase Del Rio vs. Bryan Jackson vs. DiBiase Del Rio vs. Jackson Jackson over Del Rio is how I could see it going down. |
I kind of hope that they use the tournament to really push a great in-ring talent. I mean, it works best to call someone "The King of the Ring" when they really are the best inside the squared-circle.
To me, that would mean a Daniel Bryan victory. I'm not saying that the guy needs to be a main eventer tomorrow, or anything, but it would make a lot of sense, add a lot to Bryan, the US Title, and eventually give him that leverage he needs to climb the ranks when necessary. I can pretty much feel an Alberto Del Rio win coming on, though -- not that would explicitly be a bad thing. |
Brock got the title shot at Summerslam 2002 because he won King Of The Ring (2002) right?
I believe that was the only time they gave a KOtR winner an automatic shot at the title? They should do that again (although it just ends up being a MITB type deal) |
I'm pulling for Del Rio.
|
There are so many guys I would like to see win this. Swagger, Rhodes, Bryan, Del Rio, Ziggler, Kofi, Punk, Morrison. Sheamus doesn't need it at all but I wouldn't mind if the fella won it either. The midcard is in great shape right now.
