Hardest Games You've Ever Played

Thread title is self explanatory - but in case - I mean difficult, not broken or cheap. I thought about this as I was playing Mega Man 1 today, which if you remember it, was unnecessarily difficult

1. Super Mario Brothers - The Lost Levels. For those that don't know - this was Japan's Mario 2 and deemed too difficult for American gamers - they were probably right.

2. Contra: Shattered Soldier - Speaks for itself if you've played it. I find this to be tougher than original Contra.

3. Super Ghouls & Ghosts - Imagine playing a brutally difficult game, making it to the end and then being told you have to do it all over again. Yeah...

4. Mega Man 1 - If you've played it, you know how unforgiving it is. Enemies take chucks of your health at will and no real invulnerability period when you got hit

5. Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles (NES) - I don't think I know anyone that has ever completed this game legitimately - I'm sure someone has though...

Please explain Super Ghouls & Ghosts...

Xero 11-14-2010 07:27 PM

It's a fairly hard platformer that you have to beat twice to get the ending.

When you play through Super Ghouls & Ghosts - whose difficulty is a pain in ass to begin with - you are treated to this after busting your ass through 7 brutal levels

After that kick in the scrotum, you can only get the Goddess bracelet after you've gained all the armor and shield upgrades. Even then, its a terrible weapon with no magic upgrade and even worse has no range if you get hit and lose your armor - and you have to make it to the end of the game with the weapon.

CSL 11-14-2010 08:04 PM

Fuck that. I'd have dropkicked that cunt through the window.

OssMan 11-14-2010 08:13 PM

They are all NES games. Mega Man definitely and Ninja Gaiden. Some are just absurdly hard so I don't even count them, like Silver Surfer.

Tell me you didn't have trouble with the first Contra

Razzamajazz 11-14-2010 09:40 PM

if you didn't use the konami code it could be a bit of a challenge

Fignuts 11-14-2010 10:17 PM

Megaman Games, even the first one, can't compare to some of the more difficult games in the NES Library. Also, the first TMNT is definitely more broken andcheap, than difficult.

In no particular order:

Castlevania 1 & 3- 2nd game is a cakewalk on par with the metroidvanias of the series, but these two games are ridiculous. Grim Reaper's hall, and the Reaper himself took me months to beat, and 3 as a whole is just retarded difficult.

Ninja Gaiden Trilogy- I remember getting in trouble as a kid for swearing, when I got all the way to the demon, and then had to start all the way at the beginning of world 6 after dying. Just a brutal series. Moreso than it's xbox counterpart.

Super Meatboy-Buy it and find out. Love this game.

Final Fantasy 3(nes version)- Or more specificly the final dungeon. Have to go through this tower and face like 6 ridiculously hard bosses, and if you die on any of them you go back to the beginning of the tower. Haven't played the DS version but there is no way that they kept it the same. Way too infuriating for the gamers of today.

Requiem 11-15-2010 01:28 AM

God of War 2 on Titan Mode.

:'(

Shaved Monkey 11-15-2010 03:37 AM

Friday the 13th on NES. Kinda like Super Ghouls & Ghosts in the sense that you don't get the ending when you kill Jason you have to kill him twice more after that.

And on top of that, he's pretty hard to kill the first time but he gets faster and stronger each time he dies so when you go to try and kill him the third time you can't even get a hit in on him before you're dead.

Shaved Monkey 11-15-2010 03:38 AM

Also still to this day cannot defeat Mike Tyson in Punch Out.

I never even made it Mike...fucking punch-out
Granted I wasnt even born when Punch-Out was realesed so I was but a small boy trying to challenge The Baddest Man on the planet.

and theres a little game I still own and have yet to get the cheat codes to beat

a very addicting snes game Called Illusion of Gaia

Fignuts 11-15-2010 04:22 AM

I can say with confidence, that I am one of the best 2D platformers on tpww. Maybe the best. I have no desire to be a "hardcore gamer" because I spent a lot of time being one in the NES days, and now I just want to have fun. I still occasionally pop in a nes rom or play a tough game like super meat boy, but it's not all challenge all the time for me anymore, as those games where truly infuriating.

That said, I've beaten the castlevania trilogy, the Ninja Gaiden Trilogy, Every classic megaman game(including 9 and 10) Megaman X 1-5, All the Metroids, Blaster Master, Punch-Out, etc etc. Could keep going, but what's the point really?

POINT IS, I'M AWESOME

I beat him twice but then couldn't do it ever again.

Dark-Slicer Diago 11-15-2010 12:02 PM

That's twice more than I, he's a real tough S.O.B.

LuigiD 11-15-2010 01:39 PM

Besides for some of the ones already mentioned like Megaman and Ninja Gaiden..
haven't played it in some years but I remember this game being insanely difficult.

Dark-Slicer Diago 11-15-2010 01:59 PM

Yeah, I was only able to beat the first lvl of Spider-Man and The X-Men: Arcades Revenge, I came close to beating Storms but that's it.

Razzamajazz 11-15-2010 02:05 PM

You fail at video games if you thought this game was 'hard' in any way.

Go right.

stultiloquy 11-17-2010 10:04 AM

Ghosts n' Goblins
Zelda II: The Adventure of Link
Resident Evil 2 on the 3rd playthrough
Ninja Gaiden 3
Maximum Carnage
Rush'n Attack

Ultra Mantis 11-17-2010 12:05 PM

Megaman & Bass. Hardest Megaman game ever, seven out of eight robot masters are nigh on impossible to beat without their weakness. One of them can even recharge his health to full as much as he wants.

Shin Megami Tensei: Nocturne. Pretty easy RPG until the Matador boss, at which point you get totally raped unless you have the right set up. Of course you won't have the right setup unless you're using a guide. This applies to every boss following the Matador until you give up / finish the game.

I don't know how I feel about Maximum Carnage. The game starts out okay but then it gets to a certain point that the difficulty just gets insaaaaaanee. About the time you begin to have fights with 4 bosses at a time.

Yeah, pretty much by the time you get to the Prospect Park stages that game is unrelenting - you pretty much have to do everything 'just so' in order to survive, and you'll need all of the superhero assist items you've collected over the course of the game thus far in order to live through the final battles.

WoW was hard before any expansion packs came out. Naxx and AQ40 were hard as hell before nerfs.

Jeritron 11-17-2010 07:04 PM

Games that are broken and awful don't count. They're just challenging because they're unfair pieces of shit.

Buzzkill 11-17-2010 07:33 PM

Megaman for SEGA and Sonic 2 for Game Gear

LOL

Nah that game isn't even that hard, unless you count the optional dungeon thing at the end but I didn't even try that, I was so fucking infuriated at how stupid the actual game was. I don't think I've ever pushed myself so hard to beat a game before.

You just got to time it right. I could beat him in the first round. Memorized when he threw his flash punches. First one was at 6 seconds.

Loose Cannon 11-17-2010 08:31 PM

That fucking Mickey Mouse game for NES. piece of fk'ing shit

Ninja Gaiden series on the NES since each one of the games has something brutal that makes the game hard.

First one had the wind changing directions on a jumping level, 2nd one had unlimited continues but enemies always reappeared, 3rd one had limited lives/continues.

Super Monkey Ball 2 on the later worlds.
Super Mario 2 (both US version and the Lost Levels versions).
UN Squadron.
Contra III.

Fignuts 11-18-2010 09:36 PM

Enemies reappear in all the ninja gaidens. It is a whore of a trilogy.

Had this for about ten years and never got past the first level. :(

Y2Ant 11-22-2010 11:33 AM

I beat Bart vs. the Space Mutants when I was like 8

also word on NES TMNT, I beat it when I was a kid but now i'm really shit at it.

NES games are way harder than any other console, yet it is still my favorite.

Xero 11-22-2010 12:27 PM

Once rented a Barbie game and couldn't jump over the first obstacle. I literally couldn't make it past the first screen, let alone stage.

Razzamajazz 11-22-2010 12:40 PM

Life is pretty hard. although the graphics kick ass and the AI is extremely realistic

The second Ninja Gaiden was the one where the wind changes directions. I never got too far in the second or third ones, but the first one had so many enemies and obstacles that you couldn't predict and when you hit them you flew back like 20 feet and fell into a pit. Fucking hate that game.

The Jayman 11-22-2010 02:37 PM

The Karate Kid for NES. The typhoon stage was a bitch
