Fuck sake. Why is this still happening?
I know (because people keep paying to watch it). Why? |
Because people love stupid shit
I do not understand why this is such horrible news. They are fun movies, pretty good for what they are. Far worse popcorn flicks out there.
I appreciate modern cinema classics as much as the next person, but not everything has to be high art for me to enjoy it. Maybe try not to take it so seriously. |
I'm all for fun movies, but I also don't subscribe to the idea that just because something isn't high-end it has to be utter shit.
I think we had the same discussion in the Transformers thread, Figgy. I agree with the general idea. I enjoyed the first Transformers movie, and the first 2 Pirates movies on that very principle. They were competent and fun. But the third Pirates movie was garbage no matter what angle I look at it from. Pretty much the same way I felt about Transformers 2 in that other thread. I'm all for good fun, but there are certain standards to me. I'm not willing to defend anything with good SFX and action up as a popcorn movie, because there are a lot of bad popcorn movies. I just cannot enjoy a movie like Wolverine, no matter how much I love the character and a good time at the theatre. Those same standards make me enjoy something like Iron Man or Star Trek way more, though. Maybe this can be good, though. It probably will be if they keep it simple and take it back to basics. The reason the Pirates movies got progressively worse was because they tried to create this mythology and overall fabric that I just didn't buy. I'd rather see these movies follow individual adventures and back off with trying to be a saga. |
Im torn.
I love Ian McShane. but I dont think I can take this |
They just went and put zombies in it
The third one was nowhere near as bad as TF 2, come on.
It was pretty awful
Gonna love this.
wait, i didn't see the last one. should i be outraged that will turner and elizabeth are not in it?
i mean the characters obviously, since i am not openly lamenting the absence of orlando bloom.
I loved the first Pirates movie.
Somewhat less with the second one, and completely lost it with the third. Basically the more "epic" they tried to make it, the more it failed. I'm with Jeritron. The best parts of the movies were the "smaller scale" stuff. For instance, I enjoyed the swordfight between the three main characters in the second movie way more than I did the "epic" sea battles involving a bajillion ships and mythical creatures in the third. That said, I will probably still watch this one. Just because. Might not do it in theaters unless I hear good things about it. |
yes but why are elizabeth and will and the rum gone?
The rum is always gone.

Small tits and Legolas didn't want to be in it? Whatever at least Captain Jack is back!
Part of why they got progressively worse is because the sequels kept Jack Sparrow rehashing many of his one-liners from the first movie.
It's astonishing how often the things people hate about something are the same things people love about the same thing.
I would have understood one throwback to the first movie. But it seemed like it was every other line.
It was like that. Loved it.

Why not? They has family now.

SPOILER: show |
Actually he's a free man after the first ten years. His father runs the ship now. Word of God says so.
I don't know where they could possibly take the storyline. Although I didn't see the third one and my friend was screaming because his girlfriend was pregnant during most of the second one. It didn't seem like it was going anywhere regardless.
Wiki that bitch.

I went to the movie theater with him and his cell phone rang during the film. He made this purposely huge scene like some adolescent. Maybe he can take the kid to see the new one.
They didn't have a kid though. Not really sure of the details of that situation.

But that's canon.
Not to me. Unless I rewatch it and somehow I missed something. Pretty sure I am correct though.
You're correct and the director is wrong?
I have not had any personal conversations with the director wherein he told me that I was wrong.
Only seen the first two parts out of don't know how many there are, but they were meh. Don't really care about this.
Knowing the Oscars, Johnny Depp will probably win for this, despite having like 7000 better roles. Compensation is where Oscars at. |

The first film is good fun, the second was total shit and the 3rd appears to be complete shit too from what I've caught of it on TV. I don't even get what you are trying to say? Are you suggesting we don't criticise shit films for being shit? Are you saying that fun means there has to be a lack of quality? I've seen plenty of fun, easy to watch films that don't manage to be contrived, bloated and nonsensical like the POTC films are. In fact, I don't find bad films to be very fun, unless they're comically bad. Who said anything about high art? What are you even talking about? I think you've genuinely made me wonder what your game is here. |
The second wasn't TOTAL shit. Had some elements of good stuff in it.

Because their wasn't a trend of ambiguous endings at the time where taking the director's words on the matter was dubious.
The third was close to terrible and it causes me concern this new one will also continue down that path. Hopefully they themselves realize the need to simplify and create a decent story again that's free of over the top and unbelievable scenes.
I have loved everything cousin Johnny has been in, the pirate movies are no exception. Will be weird not having the whole crew back, but it looks like Barbosa is still around so that is good.
This hasn't gotten very good reviews.
I enjoyed it.
I thought the third was a bit over the top. But it did succeed on a couple of levels. This one didn't focus so much on the ridiculous over the top sea battles. There were big sword fights, but it's a fucking pirate movie. I thought the character development was solid, except for the Missionary who could have been given a more central role, but whatever. Also, Barbosa was pure awesome. He as a Privateer was hilarious, but his actions implied that he was pure Pirate. In fact, his motivation behind being a Privateer made him more badass. His ending was definitely fan service for the series. |
This wasn't very good. Penelope Cruz's character was just awful. As was the whole story with the missionary and the mermaid, which could've been lifted straight out of the film with nothing of value lost.
Johnny Depp was entertaining enough, and Ian McShane was good. Otherwise flick would've been a total loss. |
"Reviews"
I am so jaded by the concept of 'professional reviews'. Haven't read a review article in a while. At best I just wanted validation for something I liked, at worst some pretentious cob pisses me off with some overly critical prose about how his tastes haven't been met. I trust friends (like yourselves) for reviews of any kind, for better or worse. |

...I didn't really wanna see this movie, I didn't think I'd really like it, but I watched it last Saturday with some friends, and it was pretty good...
...a little too long, but good. |

Finally saw this recently and loved it. Thought it was the best since black pearl. I didn't mind the lack of focus on the missionary, there were enough characters for the movie to focus on. He served his purpose and we didn't need another will Elizabeth story.
Black beard was great but underused. Barbossas storyline was the star. Surprised by the harsh reviews, maybe people are pirated out. |
