epic...I dig this.

RiX1024 01-17-2011 02:08 PM

Sounds like a plan. Anyone can win it this year.

thedamndest 01-17-2011 02:11 PM

The Superbowl has added a fifth quarter this year.

#BROKEN Hasney 01-17-2011 02:13 PM

Got a feeling this is to have Del Rio outlast Rey in terms of record time even if he doesn't win.

Hoping the extra 10 guys are shocks, but probably not.

Evil Vito 01-17-2011 02:15 PM

<font color=goldenrod>Definitely think a good amount of nostalgia participants will be in.</font>

Xero 01-17-2011 02:18 PM

I'm all for this, but I'm wondering how the intervals will be handled.

Evil Vito 01-17-2011 02:21 PM

<font color=goldenrod>Yeah if they bump the intervals down to 60 seconds, the change wasn't worth it. Gotta be at least 90.</font>

Xero 01-17-2011 02:25 PM

At 90 seconds it makes it exactly an hour for everyone to come out (obviously not taking the longer intervals into account, which there always are). Best case scenario, they keep that rapid-fire pace while extending the match itself. And that's awesome.

Joesgonnakillyou 01-17-2011 02:26 PM

The article says there will be entrants every 90 seconds. I'm quite excited by this, despite the fact it won't make too much of a difference overall. I think anyway.

Article: http://www.wwe.com/shows/royalrumble...30520/preview/

"Every 90 seconds, one of 40 elite ring warriors with randomly drawn Rumble entry numbers joins the fray. "

This is officially epic.

Innovator 01-17-2011 02:33 PM

Well, now I have to order the Rumble.

Gass 01-17-2011 02:34 PM

awesome.

Shadrick 01-17-2011 02:35 PM

I love this.

loopydate 01-17-2011 02:57 PM

Well, now I guess my fantasy-booked Rumble from a couple weeks ago is shot to shit, right?

Very excited about this. Especially the prospect of more nostalgia entrants.

Ermaximus 01-17-2011 03:02 PM

What the fuck???

So in this case, nobody should be left off the RR card unless they're hurt. Maybe they're going to let some of the NXT guys into the RR?

I'm all for this, especially if they do a spot where like 25 people are in there at once or something.

Also Kane's record for eliminations will probz be surpassed.

Good shit regardless.

St. Jimmy 01-17-2011 03:05 PM

More guys for Hunter to squash.

Furious Beardsley 01-17-2011 03:06 PM

Awesome, and I was thinking that the Rumble was just going to be alright this year.

40 participants is going to make it pretty great I think. Looking forward to it now.

Ermaximus 01-17-2011 03:06 PM

So this could easily give Cena a chance to pull a Foley and use the 3 faces of Cena during the rumble.

Graveler 01-17-2011 03:09 PM

Awesome. It'd be crazy if the winner this year draws number 1

loopydate 01-17-2011 03:13 PM

I'm guessing we get two Chavo appearances, one as himself, one as the Eagle where he finally gets unmasked and even Swagger is disappointed that it's Chavo.

Supreme Olajuwon 01-17-2011 03:13 PM

Is this really awesome? It's interesting I guess, but putting in 10 extra guys with no chance of winning doesn't really scream awesome to me.

Kapoutman 01-17-2011 03:14 PM

Nice. Now it will be just like the Battle Royals I used to play on WCW/nWo: World Tour.

Lock Jaw 01-17-2011 03:18 PM

I'd have rather it remained 30. Alas, the decision was out of my hands.

Loose Cannon 01-17-2011 03:24 PM

PUT THE TITLE ON THE LINE AND THAT WILL BE EPIC

Nicky Fives 01-17-2011 03:26 PM

I like this..... I'd still like to see the time intervals stay at 2:00, but I guess I can't be picky.....

Ermaximus 01-17-2011 03:27 PM

Why not just put every title on the line? Depending on how you finish, determines which title you get. 6th and 5th=tag champs, 4th=US champ, 3rd=IC champ, 2nd=WHC, and the last man standing gets the WWE titles, and both the Bella twins.

parkmania 01-17-2011 03:30 PM

Blech. Just means they felt they didn't have enough singles/tag matches to fill the rest of the time adequately.

Shisen Kopf 01-17-2011 03:40 PM

World War Three had 60 participants and those were the greatest PPVs in the history of the universe

Plus three rings.

I remember the very first Royal Rumble had 20, and a year later, it went up to 30. And now, they move it up to 40. That's a pretty good change of pace.

BizarroKing 01-17-2011 04:31 PM

The Rumble just got bigger in more ways than 1!

Dorkchop 01-17-2011 04:35 PM

Pretty awesome, but I wish they still came in every 2 minutes. That might seem too long for most fans though.

Rammsteinmad 01-17-2011 04:43 PM

I agree with Supreme, I don't think this is really a great idea. Usually in a 30-man Royal Rumble there are at least 20 participants that you KNOW are not going to win. Now it's going to be 30 participants.

I'm all for nostalgia and stuff, but if we suddenly get ten guest appearances (when you know damn well they won't win the thing), the nostalgia kind of wears off and ruins the 'unpredictablilty' of the match.

Plus, if it ends up being the usual legends such as Sgt. Slaughter, Roddy Piper etc, then I really couldn't care less.

Heisenberg 01-17-2011 05:03 PM

I am pumped for the Rumble, always nice to see everyone mix it up out of their storylined matches and bullshit and just chuck each other around.

Hanso Amore 01-17-2011 05:13 PM

THey better not roll out the normal

Snuka Piper Slaughter Duggan Tatanka lineup.

I want to see some crazy names. Even if they are old and out of shape.

GodFather
D Lo
Venis
Lance Storm
Heidenreich
Scotty 2 Hotty

Just random guys that havent been around or werent huge, but could be fun.

Grablot 01-17-2011 05:13 PM

Unfortunately these are the extra 10 contestants

1) Gerald Brisco
2) Pat Patterson
3) Mae Young
4) Harvey Wippleman
5) Sgt Slaughter
6) Montel Williams
7) Michael Hayes
8) Brooklyn Brawler
9) Michael Cole
10) Cher

Tazz Dan 01-17-2011 05:15 PM

Actually, Scotty 2 Hotty gave the impression on twitter the other day he could return. I was thinking he was just messing with a fan, didn't even think about the Rumble. I would mark out "LIKE A BITCH" for him.

Supreme Olajuwon 01-17-2011 05:19 PM

Too Cool reunion at the Rumble. Make it happen. I bet Christopher's gotten fat though.

Loose Cannon 01-17-2011 05:22 PM

omg it's the Sarge, we haven't seen him in months. :nono:

Loose Cannon 01-17-2011 05:23 PM

Sarge makes as many appearences as the HBK riding in on a zipline clip does every year

From JR's twitter:

“If having 40 men in the Royal Rumble match helps sell ppvs, then its a really good idea. 40 sounds good to me. Makes the main event bigger. Watch what I say, the 40 man royal rumble match will be over analyzed by many. Gives 10 more paydays & adds ‘biggest ever’ mkt’ing hook”.

ooTin 01-17-2011 05:51 PM

I like the idea but all its really doing is giving 10 more guys a paycheck and adding the title of "Biggest Ever" to the marketing side of things. It will be interesting to see what they do with it.

Tazz Dan 01-17-2011 06:01 PM

ooTin is JR???

Lock Jaw 01-17-2011 06:17 PM

As long as one of the extra ten spots goes to STEVE BLACKMAN I will be happy.

And entering at #40: The Anonymous Raw GM in robot body:

dronepool 01-17-2011 06:19 PM

I wonder what's the catch on this..

Ruien 01-17-2011 06:23 PM

With 10 extra guys, both Cryme Time members will be allowed in. Oh wait........

Tazz Dan 01-17-2011 06:36 PM

Another quality post from Ruien.

MoFo 01-17-2011 06:48 PM

Bound to be a few actually unexpected surprises.

Hopefully Christian, Evan Bourne, and maybe KEVIN NASH!!!1

Tazz Dan 01-17-2011 06:50 PM

If Nash came out I.... I just don't what I'd do. Although it would be worth having a camera on me lol

Xero 01-17-2011 06:54 PM

You should record yourself watching the entire Rumble.

loopydate 01-17-2011 06:56 PM

Christian will be back almost for sure. I think Bourne's out at least until March, right? My hunch is we'll get Rikishi for a moment with the Usos, plus probably an appearance from one or two of the agents/producers/whatever they're calling them now. IRS, Malenko, maybe Kidman?

Tazz Dan 01-17-2011 07:04 PM

I might do that actually. Or stream it live.

BizarroKing 01-17-2011 07:39 PM

-Zack Ryder
-Yoshi Tatsu
-Mark Henry
-Goldust (he'll be healed by then won't he?)
-Alex Riley

-Dusty Rhodes

screech 01-17-2011 07:48 PM

Don't really see this as awesome either, for reasons already said.

they're still advertising juan cena on the radio for an upcoming house show here, maybe he will debut

Emperor Smeat 01-17-2011 08:37 PM

This must have been a last minute decision since commercials for the Rumble still mention 30 guys or "I will eliminate 29 other guys."

WWE probably realizes the undercard is going to be bad to make the change this quickly.

SlickyTrickyDamon 01-17-2011 08:40 PM

We're gonna need a bigger boat (ring)- Jaws.

CSL 01-17-2011 08:41 PM

Was on Facebook for about 27 seconds earlier before I came across "‎40 man royal rumble? Fuck that, keep it to the basics". I hate professional wrestling.

SlickyTrickyDamon 01-17-2011 08:45 PM

WWE is not professional wrestling, it's Sports Entertainment.

loopydate 01-17-2011 08:49 PM

The expanded field is also a good excuse to maybe work Kong into the match.

XCaliber 01-18-2011 12:23 AM

They should have done this sooner but it's obvious the only reason there doing it is to squeeze in the likes of the New and Old Nexus member there's you're +10 right there.

Evil Vito 01-18-2011 01:37 AM

<font color=goldenrod>WWE.com has confirmed the following participants:

Alberto Del Rio
CM Punk
Cody Rhodes
Daniel Bryan
Darren Young
David Hart Smith
David Otunga
Husky Harris
John Cena
John Morrison
Mark Henry
Michael McGillicutty
Primo
R-Truth
Rey Mysterio
Sheamus
Ted DiBiase
Tyson Kidd
William Regal
Yoshi Tatsu
Zack Ryder

That's 21 participants already. On the Raw side I figure Mason Ryan will be added. Jerry Lawler is a safe bet. Triple H will certainly be a mystery guy, The Great Khali could also return. Santino & Kozlov not being announced yet might mean they get assigned to a tag title match, I guess against The Usos yet again so figure neither of those 4 get in.

Now in terms of SmackDown "locks" I'd say: Beth Phoenix, Big Show, Chris Masters, Drew McIntyre, Ezekiel Jackson, Heath Slater, Jack Swagger, Justin Gabriel, Kane, Kofi Kingston, and Wade Barrett

That leaves Chavo Guerrero, Curt Hawkins, JTG, Trent Barreta, and Tyler Reks - I'd guess JTG and Trent are the two most likely to sneak in out of that group, leaving about 3-4 spots total for COMPLETE mystery entrants.</font>

Ermaximus 01-18-2011 11:40 AM

Percy Watson will be in the rumble. OH YEAH!

Graveler 01-19-2011 01:21 AM

Apparently, none of the NXT guys will be in it

Droford 01-19-2011 01:31 AM

I guarantee at some point HHH, Sheamus, Regal and Lawler will be in the ring at the same time.

Sepholio 01-19-2011 09:41 AM

just bring back world war 3.

Nightwing 01-19-2011 12:07 PM

Yeah, its just going to be alot of newer green guys. Not too excited about it.

ThePhantom 01-19-2011 01:27 PM

I am not a fan of this expansion to 40 superstars, and here is why;

1) I am a traditionalist, and IMO if it isn't broken, don't fix it.

2) In reality, there are only about 5 guys that could realistically win this thing. Adding more guys to it, or women (Awesome Kong :shifty:) only results in faster eliminations and the feeling "Wait, is this guy still in the WWE! I haven't seen him in a very long time!)

3) All the numbers they said during the Royal Rumble promo this past week on Raw will virtually mean nothing. Mysterio's record for the longest time in the ring will undoubtedly be broken, however, imo, it should still stand as there was only 30 guys participating. Also, this gives an individual the opportunity to eliminate more than Kane (I forget the number, something tells me 11.)

The only way this is going to please me is if they bring in some surprise entrants and not just filler guys such as Tatsui, David Hart-Smith, ect. Because if that is the case, why even do the upgrade to 40? I think that less is more, and Vince should have went with that.

Emperor Smeat 01-19-2011 06:24 PM

I have a feeling they will break at least 2 records being the most eliminations and most eliminations by a woman assuming Kong enters and takes out 2 people. Only other ones possible would be longest time, #40 wins, and most career eliminations.

Most eliminations would create the quick push needed for a "monster" style wrestler like Big Zeke or the new guy CM Punk has for Nexus.

Xero 01-19-2011 06:54 PM

If they do have someone break the most eliminations record, have them enter really early, break the record and immediately have Kane's number hit (in the 30s) and have them hype it to shit. Then either have Kane eliminate them or have them eliminate Kane.

Fox 01-19-2011 09:04 PM

They should make it a 60-Man Royal Rumble with two entry ways and two rings, have two guys come out at a time and then when it gets down to the final four they fight it out in one ring.

Seriously though, I think this is a cool idea. Change can be a good thing. But really it probably just means more people for Cena and Triple H to throw out, plus the ability to let all Nexus members into the match.

Xero 01-19-2011 09:07 PM

I want to see someone, if not WWE some indy production with a good budget for rigging, do a Battle Royal with two rings, but the second ring is above the first. Each number would randomly have either "top" or "bottom" associated with it.

Fox 01-19-2011 09:08 PM

Here's what I'd like to see happen:

It gets down to the end and you have Wade Barrett's Nexus, CM Punk's Nexus, Triple H and John Cena.

The Nexus factions team up again and work together to beat down HHH and Cena to bloody pulps. They throw them over the top rope, then all the Nexus members eliminate themselves except for Barrett and Punk. Barrett and Punk step over the top rope and jump to the floor together at the same time.

Barrett gets #1 contendership for the World Title on Smackdown and CM Punk gets #1 contendership for the WWE Title on RAW. This would lead to CM Punk vs. John Cena (who wins the title at EC) and Wade Barrett losing his #1 contendership at EC to maybe Alberto Del Rio after Undertaker comes in and whips Barrett's ass, costing him his match, setting up Taker versus Barrett and Del Rio vs. Edge vs. Rey Mysterio for the World Title at WrestleMania.

Fox 01-19-2011 09:09 PM

Bah gawd two story ring! That's actually kind of a cool idea, though I'm not sure how well people in the higher seats would be able to see the lower ring. Also, getting thrown over the top rope from the top ring would probably lead to some pretty serious injuries... unless they surrounded the ring with big bouncy mats or tables or something.

While this would be a cool idea, I really doubt Vince would give up the $$$ from the seats that would have to be removed to make room for the second ring.

You know what? They never sell out Mania, so they wouldn't be losing anything. They should do a Mania with a proper War Games match with two rings.

thedamndest 01-19-2011 10:51 PM

If they do War Games or World War 3 I would think it would be its own PPV, probably having a Raw v. Smackdown theme rather than just a match that happens to take place at Mania. Bragging Rights would be a proper venue for this as they already have the feud built in.
