I feel like this guy right now

FakeLaser 02-14-2011 06:37 PM

Only Radiohead could get me to drop $48.00 on an album when I haven't purchased one in over a decade

FakeLaser 02-14-2011 06:49 PM

Obviously I haven't been this excited for anything in a long time.

Indifferent Clox 02-15-2011 01:28 AM

best week ever

Fignuts 02-15-2011 07:22 AM

This is going to be a very slow week.

Boomer 02-15-2011 10:57 AM

I was at the dentist yesterday twiddling my thumbs during my fillings because I was so happy because of this. I dropped 90 to import the In Rainbows special edition, so 48 bucks seems like a steal to me.

Still need to get a vinyl player of my own :-\

One of the songs Thom played on some solo dates. Like hearing it in a full band version. And of course, they had to get some "Thom dancing" in the video.

Boomer 02-18-2011 11:30 AM

Released a day early, ladies and gentleman. Too bad I'm at work right now. Gonna try and sneak it in somehow.

Requiem 02-18-2011 02:15 PM

Meh, pretty forgettable album. Listened to it all the way through once and honestly nothing really stood out for me. Kinda irritated by a couple of the songs even with the way they used the 'clicks' for helping with the beat or something. Dunno, pretty underwhelming effort.

Boomer 02-18-2011 02:32 PM

I listened to it on my work netbook, so I'm not judging anything I listened to yet. But knowing my history with Radiohead, I doubt I will be disappointed.

Indifferent Clox 02-18-2011 04:54 PM

its like panda bear mixed with radiohead its gooold

Fignuts 02-18-2011 06:02 PM

I'm on Codex right now. It's all really good so far, but like req, nothing has really stood out for me, like some of my fav radiohead tracks have in the past.

GD 02-18-2011 07:04 PM

I know that it is Radiohead but is it worth purchasing?

Fignuts 02-18-2011 07:20 PM

Frankly, no. Cheapest digital version is 9 dollars and there are only 8 songs.

dronepool 02-18-2011 07:29 PM

Just hit up a torrent site.

GD 02-18-2011 07:37 PM

I will do that.

ron the dial 02-18-2011 09:00 PM

just finished my first listen through. i don't hate it, but it certainly doesn't jump out at me like most of what they've done in the past. obviously, it's going to get more and more listens, but i'm just not so sure how many of these songs i'll be wanting to listen to in a year or so.

Buzzkill 02-19-2011 01:43 AM

Listening through now, on track 2. I like what I'm hearing...

Buzzkill 02-19-2011 02:21 AM

Codex

Buzzkill 02-19-2011 02:24 AM

omg

FakeLaser 02-19-2011 11:08 AM

First listen now... so far I am really feelin it. Didn't get to listen yesterday as I never came home.

MVP 02-19-2011 11:56 AM

I'll probably pick this album up. What I've heard so far is pretty good, and vintage Radiohead is one hell of a standard to live up to.

Boomer 02-19-2011 11:57 AM

I woke up this morning and I enjoyed my listen 10x more. Need a little while to rank it with the other stuff though.

Don't really see this at all actually. Radiohead has been using glitchy, trippy effects for the last 11 years. Panda Bear's trademark to me is really more insanely catchy/multilayered melodies, don't really get this here.

Buzzkill 02-19-2011 12:24 PM

Feels like a culmination of everything they've done so far, including The Eraser. Really like Morning Mr Magpie, Codex, and Seperator. Also, not a bad track on the album.

Definitely doesn't disappoint, but didn't blow me out of the water either (still a great album, tho). I really really admire it, especially on a technical level, but I'm not sure if I can say I "love" it.

Buzzkill 02-19-2011 01:06 PM

Codex is soooo goood

Buzzkill 02-19-2011 08:02 PM

Damn just listened to In Rainbows again, definitely is way better than this. Still love this album tho

Triple A 02-19-2011 09:20 PM

Gonna wait until Pitchfork rates it before I give my opinion.

What songs sound like Panda Bear

Triple A 02-19-2011 09:25 PM

I feel like I will probably never listen to this album a second time but I was never really a big Radiohead fan. Shouldn't even be making this post.

DrA 02-19-2011 10:25 PM

I'm saving up my energy for the new Machine Head album.

Indifferent Clox 02-20-2011 04:52 AM

Ivfeel like the sampling on blooM is similiar to some panda bear stuff. But having listened to it 12 more times I'd say it's much more like burial.

It doesn't sound like Panda Bear at all, I don't know what he's talking about.

FakeLaser 02-20-2011 11:39 AM

If I were to compare it to a past Radiohead album I'd say it's most like In Rainbows, but slower paced like Amnesiac.

There's a lot of sampling but Radiohead has relied heavily on sampling since Kid A. It's not like Panda Bear innovated sampling. If Radiohead was influenced by any artist's usage of sampling it's probably DJ Shadow or Aphex Twin. It's way more "glitchy" than anything Panda Bear has ever done.

It's a very beautiful album. In a dark kind of way. Like pretty much all Radiohead. This isn't a dramatic shift of sound like Kid A or anything like that. There's a lot more emphasis on drumming in this album, that's the main difference I see from past Radiohead albums.

Bloom is probably my favorite track. I love Codex and Seperator as well. I'm not sure where this fits in with their other albums yet. I will say that it hasn't "blown my mind" off the bat like In Rainbows, OK Computer or Kid A did right off the bat. I'd say it's somewhere in Hail To The Thief territory, really fucking good but not a straight up CLASSIC. I've only listened through twice thus far though. It may change for better or for worse.

I also don't think this is it. It's wayyyyy too short at 37 minutes. I think there's gonna be some more tracks in the actual release.

FakeLaser 02-20-2011 12:19 PM

God Codex is so good

Buzzkill 02-20-2011 12:56 PM

Definitely seems closest to The Eraser/Amnesiac to me. With In Rainbows, I felt like you could really sense the band coming together as a whole to create the album, where with this it seems like Thom Yorke is really indulging himself throughout. Not that that's a bad thing.

ron the dial 02-20-2011 01:03 PM

the more i listen to it, the more i like it. really feeling the mood it sets.

Buzzkill 02-21-2011 11:13 PM

Damn, I've listened to this a good 5 more times and I'm really starting to dig it. Lyrically it's great, and I'm starting to "get" a few of the more obscure songs.

Codex is so fucking good. Lyrics pair with the sound beautifully.

Buzzkill 02-22-2011 12:44 AM

Also, you definiteily need some good headphones with deep bass to get the full experience. Been using my friend's "Beats by Dr. Dre".

Fignuts 02-22-2011 04:39 AM

I have skullcandy headphones with a built in subwoofer, so we shall see how that goes.

Fignuts 02-22-2011 04:40 AM

Spellcheck says subwoofer is incorrect, but not awesomeness.

Fantastic.

Indifferent Clox 02-22-2011 08:27 AM

Yeah every album deserves a listen with good bass before ya pan it.

I checked them out at a Best Buy outlet. They weren't really that good. I have used a pair of Skull Candy in ear headphones so I assume that there might be something wrong with the model on display :-\

mitch_h 02-22-2011 10:42 PM

I think it's a good album. It's pretty cool that they are still trying different things this late into their career, instead of just coasting like most other bands do. Still need to listen to this more though.

I have a theory on that- that Coldplay is the band Radiohead would have been if they kept releasing songs like Creep instead of experimenting with their sounds. The former's gotten kinda stale, while, as the FakeRazor quote says, people are willing to shell out nearly $50 merely on the fact that it's Radiohead. That should tell you something about the quality.

Kapoutman 02-23-2011 02:29 PM

I like the album. Morning Mr. Magpie and Lotus Flower are my favorites. It's nowhere near being their best album, but it still manages to be the best new music I've heard this year.

Buzzkill 02-28-2011 03:22 PM

Really love this album. Dunno. Just radiohead doing what they do best

Indifferent Clox 02-28-2011 05:17 PM

Do you guys buy into the 'there's more to come rumors?"
http://www.ateaseweb.com/2011/02/21/...racy-theories/

Buzzkill 02-28-2011 05:35 PM

Nah, seems pretty far fetched really.

FakeLaser 02-28-2011 06:53 PM

Gave it an 8/10 on Pimp Radio
