Saints Row the Third
So, assuming the fuckers don't cock tease us again, it's due out for Q4. We're finally getting some information at this point, though scarce. In an interview with the senior producer, we got a couple of tidbits:
Despite the Saints Row series' rather tongue-in-cheek, cartoonish violence, Donovan said that some of the ideas that people came up with went further than Volition was willing to go. As an example, he described one weapon that won't be appearing in the game: the fart in a jar grenade. The idea was that the jar contained flatulence so terrible that anyone caught in the blast would be too busy vomiting to engage in combat. Apparently, some of the team liked the concept, but others weren't so keen, so Volition decided to scrap it. Donovan said that other suggestions that people had come up with were so bad that he didn't even want to repeat them, which is quite remarkable when you consider how violent and/or over the top some of Saints Row 2 was. While it won't be as bad as it could have been, THQ is boasting that Saints Row: The Third will feature some of the most "outlandish gameplay scenarios" around. Some of the things that the game does include are skydiving with tanks, airstrikes on Mexican gangs, and fighting off military personnel with a sex toy. Air Strikes on Mexicans? Juan's days are numbered. Dildo weapons? Meh. Tank Skydiving? Epic. No "fart in a jar" grenade? Thank GOD. |
i feel "cautiously optimistic" sums up how i feel about this game. really like SR2, i just hope the 3rd has more varied/interesting missions and the humour doesn't get any dumber than it was.
|
Going to play this in Panama.
|
Spent way too much time on Saints Row 2 buying hotels and shit.
Good stuff. |
Hotels or cribs? I don't recall buying anything but "cribs".
|
It has been my dream since I was a child, to sky dive with a tank.
Thank you, Saint's Row 3. |
Darn no fart in a jar grenades? oh well
|
Just in time for Santa:D:shifty:

my only gripe is i hope you don't need to do useless bullshit in order to do the story missions. |
Game Informer has a few more details about the game:
1) No multiplayer so that the team can focus on a stronger co-op and solo gameplay. 2) Weapons can be customized in a lot of ways and some even silly/comical. 3) RC gun lets you shoot at cars and then control them like an RC toy car. 4) Experience system similar to GTA San Andreas that lets you eat, get fat, and change your physical appearance more. |

2. THANK YOU! I was hoping for more customisation. 3. Cool. 4. I hope they don't mean too much like SA. Wasn't that system pretty fucking unpopular? |
4 is seriously a question BTW, before anyone gets on my nuts for "hatin'."
Never played GTASA, this was just the impression I got online and shit. |
I thought it was a bother, tbh.
|
I am hoping for a driving system between GTA IV and SR 2. GTA IV was too sensitive, and in SR 2, the handling was so tight that it just didn't feel right. The cars had no "weight" to them, like in GTA IV.
|
Honestly, like I have said before, I just want a game that takes all the good from GTA IV and Saint's Row 2, and smushes it all together.
I really hope SR 3 is that game. |
Quote:
Then you get into a mission where you need to face off against a rival gang, and you get punted to the moon while driving a fucking BEAR. Even the cops usually aren't that bad. |
I liked how you could customize your character and everything, one thing I didnt enjoy in the sligtest was the driving.
Edit: I see the conversation turned to the above. Honestly mix San Andreas driving with GTA IV braking and you have win. |

Im sorry KK, but go play San Andreas. I loved that game and almost everything about it apart from the Zero mission set.

Aside from actually having less credibility on the subject than Fignuts? |
How many times can Saints Row crumble then rise again?

Nice to see you carry enough of a grudge over it you're willing to make shit up just to continue it, though. :) |
Can certainly see why someone wouldn't like that street cred system for doing story missions, but I liked most of the side missions in the game, so it didn't bug me. Assassinations in particular were always fun.
|
That system as managed a lot better in SR2. Plus there are so many activities and ways to get your cred up that it's really not hard at all. In SR2 I very rarely had no cred to spare. All the side shit was so much fun I had cred stacked up the wazoo.

I hope if they do a turf system, they do like Crackdown did and allow you to turn the rival gangs back on after you've beat the proper game. I know you could replay missions, but once I beat the game, I mostly just wanted tosandbox the shit out of it. |
In regards to your comment about Fignuts. i clearly missed something. what did you mean by it?
|
Quote:
|
Well then don't blame the game because you put yourself on a limited schedule to play it. Lots of games can't be fully enjoyed, in a short amount of time.

Wonder what other critiques you might have..... "God, I hate Fallout 3. I can't beat it in a weekend!" |
Cool KK you didn't make a valid point.
Wonder what other critiques you might have on other peoples opinions..... "What you hate the coin shooter in Smash Bros Brawl!? You're stupid, its a lot more fun you should like to play it!" Quote:

It's only not valid because it's inconvenient to you. But again, when you're already cool with flat-out lying, what's a little dishonesty in the face of inconvenience? |

Okay, here's my mini-review of San Andreas: As a pure sandbox game it was great, and at the time was the best to offer for me. You could only play as one character but, due to the eating/exercise system and GTA's costume selection you could change it up quite nicely. That said, I found exercising and constantly eating to be a chore. Spent way too much time swimming and hitting the gym (not saying it was a horrible way to have people invest in the character, just wish they had a better balance) in a game where I wanted to destroy/interact with the world while not being too constrained by the "rules". I did love the gang territory system, however which made up for a lot of it. Also, the story didn't fit with the cast of characters. Hated all the flying missions. Hated the ending. Also thought they didn't know where they wanted to go with the story (ie. Casino mission). Seems kind of dumb to follow a casino robbery with hunting down a crack-head. Just me? |

Just seen a TV ad for this. Not even out until November, looks like they'll be aggressive as fuck in marketing this thing.

THQ revealed more details with the main bad guy appearing around the 2nd mission and the main gang being called The Syndicate who want about 66% of everything the Saints own in terms of profits.
Also revealed was something called a "Man-Canon" (Professor Genki's Man-a-pult): Quote:

I'll play with you tho. ;)

Getting that.
|
I so wish they had added four player Co-Op. Since there are four slots (Two "homies" in a 2P game), it'd be sweet if you could get a real "gang" of people together and wreck shit.

Second mission of the game. Loving it. I know I know, "embed noob!" I would love to but the player destructoid uses blows and never works right. |
Shaundi: "ASSHOOOOOLLLEEEEE!"
BUYING IT. |

I don't want to watch whole videos dedicated to levels in a game I plan on playing. It's kinda....Dumb. But that sounds like a fucking incredible deal. |
Are the first 2 games worth picking up? Quite tempted to play them before this one comes out.
|
2nd is great but takes a while to get properly into if yuo're used to GTA type stuff. i've played it through about 6 times now though.
|
1st isn't great tbh
|
The 1st one is too serious. Trying to live the hip-hop life.

The first was less insane. Less focused on wild fun. Less batshit crazy. It still had fun in it, but it's more like looking at a prototype than a straight up awesome game. And Volition knew this. That's why the ads played up the crazy shit you can do. Like side games where you spray sewage and dress up as cops so you can beat people down on TV. The graphics are inferior to the GTA alternative, but the fun is awesome. Nothing better than unlocking all the cheats, too. Unlock no fall damage and then suicide diving pedestrians from helicopters. Unlimited ammo for various weapons is also mad fun. None of them completely make you invincible. You don't get infinite health. You get faster health regen if you're not getting shot. You still have to not get shot, which is doable. You still have to reload your weapons; you merely run out of ammo. Suicide dives will stop you for a moment, so they're not necessarily an escape. But seriously. BLOWING SHIT UP FTW. Especially when you try and see how much airtime your buddy can get off the gas station he's driving into. Which you've just loaded with C4. Plus....Lots of vehicles, which handle like a sandbox game should, boats planes and helicopters, fun character customisation to an insane degree, and a story that doesn't take itself too seriously. It knows it's part of a sandbox and doesn't try and nag you. The good thing about this is, even though all three SR games ostensibly follow the same character, they're story light enough that you don't really need to know the prior title's story. Saints Row 1: You get recruited into the second street saints, wreck shit, and build up the empire until you are betrayed. Saints Row 2: You wake up in the hospital ward of a prison after a chunk of time in a coma. In your absence, the Saints went defunct, and three new gangs and Ultor (yes, that Ultor) have taken over. Wreck shit, own city, rinse, repeat. Saints Row 3: apparently, you own the city so hard you have to go elsewhere for a good fight. Stilwater out, Steelport in, 3 new gangs, syndicate, wreck shit, own city. I really hope they do more successors to Saints Row, but I'm glad this one appears to be the close on this specific set of characters. I like Chaundi, Pierce and Gatt, mind. Just...Short of owning the US, there's not much else to do. Though that might be the best sandbox ever. |
I was worried at first, the graphic overhaul. Thought it actually might take away what made two so great.
Then saw some footage. My God. I cannot wait. |

Love me some some Saints Row 3. Gonna have to go get it preordered next month as I opted for Skyrim instead.
Been trying to play SR2 coop with a buddy of mine, but he has the shittiest internet of all time and connecting is hard. Some of my other friends have it, but they never play. |

Sweet. Bear in mind that I have a crippling addiction to Oblivion, so most of the time I'm playing that. Especially with Skyrim around the corner.

Rumored list of DLC with co-op and cheats both rumored to be paying modes. It is also possible the rumored DLC sets would be free for new owners using an Online Pass while used owners would only be the ones to pay for them.
SPOILER: show http://www.giantbomb.com/saints-row-...ngs/35-510911/ |
Paid stuff that was free in the first 2 games? This better be online pass or it damn well might be pass in general.

Quote:

Co-Op is an advertised feature, BTW. If they limit it with this, that's really false advertising.
|
I hear you. It's like THQ really can't go more than 5 minutes without completely fucking something up.

Well they were charging $70 for games that were basically buggy and/or terrible budget titles.
|
Aren't all the majors doing that, though?
I don't mean all their titles, but it seems like the major pubs all break out some really shitty full-priced titles. |
True, but their portfolios aren't nearly as cluttered with shit that won't sell because it sucks too much or is way overpriced or both. They need to take a hard look at themselves in the mirror and realize that shit like used game sales isn't the cause of their problems; it's the effect.
|
Been considering picking up Saints Row 2 but just have a quick question. How strict or lenient is the wanted system in the game in terms of free roaming or goofing off and not playing missions?
Is it like GTA where if you accidentally crash into a police car, that automatically gets 1 star or wanted level or hit a few people and it goes up regardless if there were police around? I know in older GTA games 2 stars and above would have aggressive cops chasing but they reduced the cops going all out on a 2 star level in GTA IV. |
Quote:
Quote:
|
It's much more lenient than GTA. The only things I'd say GTA IV has over SR2, is graphics, and it's cover systems. Then again, some people don't even like cover systems, so that doesn't even count. Personal preference really.
|
Nah, you got it KK. Plus they have those drive thru forgiveness thingies.

THQ reveals their DLC plans for the game include having roughly 40 weeks of DLC pack releases and make the game's content be interesting enough to keep people interested in playing the game and reduce the overall amount of used copies.

Probably going to be very similar to what Capcom or Bethesda does with DLC content in being mostly new costumes, colors, and weapons/cars.
It is briefly referenced in the article but THQ already did something similar with MX vs ATV although they charged that game at a discount price and then had the DLC cover everything else. It ended up being a huge mistake and might have killed off the series due to all the stuff lacking in comparison to other racing games. |
Quote:
I'm wondering if there will be a code for new purchases that allows the later stuff. They did say combating the overall volume of used games. I mean, they could be retarded enough to think making us spend 80 more bucks or adding just clothing packs and small items will keep us paying, but MAYBE they have a clue. The DLC pricing for the last game was kind of weird, with the first one being overly expensive for its content, the second being much beefier for a lower price point, and the last one being a free clothing pack (With a bunch of stuff). One of the things I've had my fingers crossed for on this game is that they would have finally figured it out. I like the vow of "continued support through DLC." This sounds a little too much like a marketing ploy rather than real support tho. |
As long as there is a lot of content on the disc, then I don't see the problem with this.
|
Saints Row Initiation Station demo is available. You can download it to XBox 360 and I think PS3 with instructions on Saintsrow.com . You can create your character, upload it to your SR account, and make ' em public. You can then download any character made public.
There's less customisation in this one, it's obvious from the creator. I'm assuming more clothing options will open up in-game, but you can't do layers anymore, you're you're limited to a single top, bottom, etc. Within that, there ARE a lot of choices, and most of them look good. And holy shit, I'm making a Steampunk character next time I boot it up. It's a bit of a shame, but I'm still psyched. |
I love the "zombie" voice for your character.
|
It's all the rage.
|
It's also on Steam, but not in the UK as you can't buy it on Steam in the UK as Game threw their toys out the pram and told THQ they wouldn't stock the PC version if it was on Steam.
It uses Steamworks though, so even on disc it needs Steam... |
