Saints Row the Third

So, assuming the fuckers don't cock tease us again, it's due out for Q4. We're finally getting some information at this point, though scarce. In an interview with the senior producer, we got a couple of tidbits:

Despite the Saints Row series' rather tongue-in-cheek, cartoonish violence, Donovan said that some of the ideas that people came up with went further than Volition was willing to go. As an example, he described one weapon that won't be appearing in the game: the fart in a jar grenade. The idea was that the jar contained flatulence so terrible that anyone caught in the blast would be too busy vomiting to engage in combat. Apparently, some of the team liked the concept, but others weren't so keen, so Volition decided to scrap it.

Donovan said that other suggestions that people had come up with were so bad that he didn't even want to repeat them, which is quite remarkable when you consider how violent and/or over the top some of Saints Row 2 was. While it won't be as bad as it could have been, THQ is boasting that Saints Row: The Third will feature some of the most "outlandish gameplay scenarios" around. Some of the things that the game does include are skydiving with tanks, airstrikes on Mexican gangs, and fighting off military personnel with a sex toy.

Air Strikes on Mexicans? Juan's days are numbered. Dildo weapons? Meh. Tank Skydiving? Epic.

No "fart in a jar" grenade? Thank GOD.

The Mask 03-09-2011 10:53 AM

i feel "cautiously optimistic" sums up how i feel about this game. really like SR2, i just hope the 3rd has more varied/interesting missions and the humour doesn't get any dumber than it was.

Swiss Ultimate 03-09-2011 10:58 AM

Going to play this in Panama.

MoFo 03-09-2011 12:20 PM

Spent way too much time on Saints Row 2 buying hotels and shit.

Good stuff.

Swiss Ultimate 03-09-2011 12:24 PM

Hotels or cribs? I don't recall buying anything but "cribs".

Fignuts 03-09-2011 12:38 PM

It has been my dream since I was a child, to sky dive with a tank.

Thank you, Saint's Row 3.

The Jayman 03-09-2011 12:40 PM

Darn no fart in a jar grenades? oh well

my only gripe is i hope you don't need to do useless bullshit in order to do the story missions.

Emperor Smeat 03-09-2011 08:08 PM

Game Informer has a few more details about the game:

1) No multiplayer so that the team can focus on a stronger co-op and solo gameplay.
2) Weapons can be customized in a lot of ways and some even silly/comical.
3) RC gun lets you shoot at cars and then control them like an RC toy car.
4) Experience system similar to GTA San Andreas that lets you eat, get fat, and change your physical appearance more.

1. Never actually played MP in 1 or 2. Can't say I'll miss something I never played. Though maybe I shuold invite Swiss for a friendly game....:naughty:

2. THANK YOU! I was hoping for more customisation.

3. Cool.

4. I hope they don't mean too much like SA. Wasn't that system pretty fucking unpopular?

Kane Knight 03-09-2011 09:00 PM

4 is seriously a question BTW, before anyone gets on my nuts for "hatin'."

Never played GTASA, this was just the impression I got online and shit.

Fignuts 03-09-2011 09:14 PM

I thought it was a bother, tbh.

Fignuts 03-09-2011 09:17 PM

I am hoping for a driving system between GTA IV and SR 2. GTA IV was too sensitive, and in SR 2, the handling was so tight that it just didn't feel right. The cars had no "weight" to them, like in GTA IV.

Fignuts 03-09-2011 09:18 PM

Honestly, like I have said before, I just want a game that takes all the good from GTA IV and Saint's Row 2, and smushes it all together.

I really hope SR 3 is that game.

Most of the time I liked that. It was like those bad 80s movies where you could fly all over the road and shit.

Then you get into a mission where you need to face off against a rival gang, and you get punted to the moon while driving a fucking BEAR.

Even the cops usually aren't that bad.

El Fangel 03-10-2011 12:39 AM

I liked how you could customize your character and everything, one thing I didnt enjoy in the sligtest was the driving.

Edit: I see the conversation turned to the above. Honestly mix San Andreas driving with GTA IV braking and you have win.

Years after taking Stilwater for their own, the Third Street Saints have evolved from street gang to household brand name, with Saints sneakers, Saints energy drinks and Johnny Gat bobble head dolls all available at a store near you. The Saints are kings of Stilwater, but their celebrity status has not gone unnoticed. The Syndicate, a legendary criminal fraternity with pawns in play all over the globe, has turned its eye on the Saints and demands tribute.

Refusing to kneel to the Syndicate, you take the fight to a new city, playing out the most outlandish gameplay scenarios ever seen in Saints Row: The Third, the third chapter in the blockbuster open-city action series. Strap it on.

El Fangel 03-10-2011 01:15 AM

Probably because that's a strawman, combined with him not being a whiny cunt about it.

Nice to see you carry enough of a grudge over it you're willing to make shit up just to continue it, though. :)

Fignuts 03-10-2011 01:20 PM

Can certainly see why someone wouldn't like that street cred system for doing story missions, but I liked most of the side missions in the game, so it didn't bug me. Assassinations in particular were always fun.

Funky Fly 03-10-2011 02:13 PM

That system as managed a lot better in SR2. Plus there are so many activities and ways to get your cred up that it's really not hard at all. In SR2 I very rarely had no cred to spare. All the side shit was so much fun I had cred stacked up the wazoo.

Not to mention you could get cred for sandboxing. Doing the shit 95% of us do in the game anyway.

Especially once they took out the "Kill X with Y weapon" from SR1.

I hope if they do a turf system, they do like Crackdown did and allow you to turn the rival gangs back on after you've beat the proper game. I know you could replay missions, but once I beat the game, I mostly just wanted tosandbox the shit out of it.

Obviously, the censorship of this weapon goes against everything Saints Row stands for, and offends the souls of good boys and girls who grew up believing in America. Fortunately, Volition has heard the cries of the jaded, and is offering fans a deal -- kick up enough of a stink, and the jarred farts will make their way to Saints Row: The Third.

All you have to do is reply to the @SaintsRow Twitter account, registering your interest in the gaseous grenade and making sure to use the #fartinajar tag. If we cry out with gusto and conviction, we may well see justice served.

Obviously this is the most important cause ever, so don't delay!

Pretty sure it's gonna make it in now.

Okay, here's my mini-review of San Andreas:

As a pure sandbox game it was great, and at the time was the best to offer for me. You could only play as one character but, due to the eating/exercise system and GTA's costume selection you could change it up quite nicely. That said, I found exercising and constantly eating to be a chore. Spent way too much time swimming and hitting the gym (not saying it was a horrible way to have people invest in the character, just wish they had a better balance) in a game where I wanted to destroy/interact with the world while not being too constrained by the "rules". I did love the gang territory system, however which made up for a lot of it.

Also, the story didn't fit with the cast of characters. Hated all the flying missions. Hated the ending. Also thought they didn't know where they wanted to go with the story (ie. Casino mission). Seems kind of dumb to follow a casino robbery with hunting down a crack-head. Just me?

Even games that appear like they will be goofy keep adhering to a degree of realism.
Volition seems to share my feelings -- from day one of the development of Saints Row: The Third, their goal was to "create the most ridiculous, over-the-top, guilty-pleasure experience ever found in a videogame." I got a small, hands-off taste of what the next Saints Row game is all about, and it's easy to see that Volition is making good on that.
In fact, one of the first things I witnessed in Saints Row: The Thirdwas the main character hitting pedestrians with a giant, floppy, purple baseball bat dildo. Yeah, that happened.

Saints Row: The Third (Xbox 360, PlayStation 3, PC)
Developer: Volition
Publisher: THQ
To be released: November 15, 2011

You are the leader of the Saints gang and you can fully customize your character to be whatever you want him or her to be. The Saints are at the top of their game and are celebrities in the city of Steelport. They are a branded image that people love and adore. Citizens clamor to get a Saints autograph, even when the gang is robbing a bank!
[Update: The article initial stated that Johnny Gat was the leader. This was a mistake and has been corrected above.]
The gang's notoriety gives the player access to powerful weapons right from the start. You'll of course have at your disposal the traditional assortment of firepower, but why shoot a gun when you can wear giant over-sized boxing gloves called "Apoca-fist" that instantly vaporize anyone you punch?
http://bulk.destructoid.com/ul/20173...Flyby-620x.jpg
Everything you do will have some sense of style to it, too. For instance, breaking into a car the regular way is replaced by a window-shattering jumping karate kick. Speaking of which, the core mechanic of the driving experience has been completely overhauled. Car handling is a lot more fast, fluid and fun, and leaves you open to doing some insane stunts in the open-world setting.
There are some outlandish cars, too, such as one that features the giant head of Johnny Gaton the hoodsmoking a cigarette that shoots out flames. Then there's Professor Genki’s Super Ballistic Manapult, which features a giant cannon on the roof that can suck up people (or even yourself) and then shoot them out.
Flying vehicles will be a big part of the game, as well, and we saw many different types of helicopters. The coolest air vehicle was the Vertical Take-Off and Landing (VTOL) Jet, which can seamlessly switch from hover to jet mode in an instant. It also lets you shoot missiles and laser beams. LASER BEAMS! So cool.
http://bulk.destructoid.com/ul/20173...Heads-620x.jpg
One final feature we were shown before getting into the meat of the game was how you can buy businesses. The Saints are out to take over and spread their territory in the gang, and purchasing a business is one way to do it. The particular business that was bought in this instance was the "Let's Pretend" costume store, where you can change your outfit and wear whatever you want.
After showing off some of the new tech, Volition started up the first mission of the game, which also acts as a tutorial for the player. The Saints are attempting to rob a bank, which is usually a pretty easy job for them. In this particular instance, though, the bank puts up heavy resistance and fights back. Unbeknownst to them, the bank is owned by the Syndicate, the main antagonist in Saints Row: The Third.
This little setback doesn't stop the Saints; they start taking out any resistance in their way. Oh, did I mention that all the Saints are wearing disguises, including a giant bobblehead-face-helmet-thing that makes them look like Johnny Gat? Because that totally happened.
http://bulk.destructoid.com/ul/20173...te_02-620x.jpg
The gang reach the bank's vault only, to discover they can't open it. So they go with plan B and blow up the walls surrounding the vault in order to allow easy access for a Saints helicopter to lift the gigantic safe away. That plan turn to shit, though as Josh Birk, a ride-along Method actor set to star in a Saints movie, activates the security alarm by mistake.
A SWAT team quickly arrives on the scene, and the Saints hold off the police until their escape chopper arrives. Once the helicopter shows up, the player hooks up the vault to it and stands on top of the vault as the helicopter attempts to pull it out. They don't get too far from the bank, as multiple waves of police helicopters and attack copters eventually cause the player to get knocked back into the bank, surrounded by SWAT.
You can expect missions to be pretty ridiculous like this throughoutSaints Row: The Third. Volition wanted to create memorable set-pieces for the missions. You can expect lots of side missions, too, both old and new. The one Volition showed off to the press was called "Tank Mayhem" and you have to blow up stuff with a tank until you reach a specific monetary damage goal. Another side mission that was teased is called "Professor Genki's Super Ethical Reality Climax Show." Sounds like fun times right there.
We'll be seeing more of Saints Row: The Third at E3 next week and I can't wait. I'm definitely looking forward to more Saints goodness, and yes, expect co-op madness again.

THQ revealed more details with the main bad guy appearing around the 2nd mission and the main gang being called The Syndicate who want about 66% of everything the Saints own in terms of profits.

Also revealed was something called a "Man-Canon" (Professor Genki's Man-a-pult):
Quote:

This demented looking car features a fiendishly grinning cat on the front grill that actually sucks up random pedestrians and enemies, and immediately inserts them into an up-top cannon that can be used to both attack foes or just send bodies flying for no particularly good reason. Those launched skyward tend to hit with a resounding splat, making this the perfect way to explain to your child why a career in the circus is probably not a great idea.
Video of the actual car is inside the link along with details of how crazy the 2nd mission is.

Sasha Grey (you know what you know her from) will be playing Viola DeWynter who, together with her twin sister Kiki, runs the Syndicate's financial empire as one part of the DeWynter sisters.

2nd is great but takes a while to get properly into if yuo're used to GTA type stuff. i've played it through about 6 times now though.

The Mask 08-12-2011 10:40 AM

1st isn't great tbh

#BROKEN Hasney 08-12-2011 10:44 AM

The 1st one is too serious. Trying to live the hip-hop life.

First one's good. Second one is fucking GREAT. Best with a partner, but not required. What made the second one great is it's crazy. Something The Third will be updating.

The first was less insane. Less focused on wild fun. Less batshit crazy. It still had fun in it, but it's more like looking at a prototype than a straight up awesome game.

And Volition knew this. That's why the ads played up the crazy shit you can do. Like side games where you spray sewage and dress up as cops so you can beat people down on TV.

The graphics are inferior to the GTA alternative, but the fun is awesome. Nothing better than unlocking all the cheats, too. Unlock no fall damage and then suicide diving pedestrians from helicopters. Unlimited ammo for various weapons is also mad fun.

None of them completely make you invincible. You don't get infinite health. You get faster health regen if you're not getting shot. You still have to not get shot, which is doable. You still have to reload your weapons; you merely run out of ammo. Suicide dives will stop you for a moment, so they're not necessarily an escape.

But seriously. BLOWING SHIT UP FTW. Especially when you try and see how much airtime your buddy can get off the gas station he's driving into. Which you've just loaded with C4.

Plus....Lots of vehicles, which handle like a sandbox game should, boats planes and helicopters, fun character customisation to an insane degree, and a story that doesn't take itself too seriously. It knows it's part of a sandbox and doesn't try and nag you.

The good thing about this is, even though all three SR games ostensibly follow the same character, they're story light enough that you don't really need to know the prior title's story.

Saints Row 1: You get recruited into the second street saints, wreck shit, and build up the empire until you are betrayed.

Saints Row 2: You wake up in the hospital ward of a prison after a chunk of time in a coma. In your absence, the Saints went defunct, and three new gangs and Ultor (yes, that Ultor) have taken over. Wreck shit, own city, rinse, repeat.

Saints Row 3: apparently, you own the city so hard you have to go elsewhere for a good fight. Stilwater out, Steelport in, 3 new gangs, syndicate, wreck shit, own city.

I really hope they do more successors to Saints Row, but I'm glad this one appears to be the close on this specific set of characters. I like Chaundi, Pierce and Gatt, mind. Just...Short of owning the US, there's not much else to do.

Though that might be the best sandbox ever.

Fryza 08-15-2011 09:23 PM

I was worried at first, the graphic overhaul. Thought it actually might take away what made two so great.

Then saw some footage.

My God. I cannot wait.

We call it the GTA IV effect.

Love me some some Saints Row 3. Gonna have to go get it preordered next month as I opted for Skyrim instead.

Been trying to play SR2 coop with a buddy of mine, but he has the shittiest internet of all time and connecting is hard. Some of my other friends have it, but they never play.

All you have to do is ask.

Sweet. Bear in mind that I have a crippling addiction to Oblivion, so most of the time I'm playing that. Especially with Skyrim around the corner.

Kane Knight 08-18-2011 11:18 AM

Freak.

I'm kinda pissed either way. Though I do plan on buying new, it is still fucking stupid.

Kane Knight 08-18-2011 06:32 PM

Co-Op is an advertised feature, BTW. If they limit it with this, that's really false advertising.

Funky Fly 08-19-2011 02:12 AM

I hear you. It's like THQ really can't go more than 5 minutes without completely fucking something up.

Yeah. This is really shitty of them. I'd say it was a new low, but they've probably done something worse i just don't remember.

Funky Fly 08-19-2011 10:51 AM

Well they were charging $70 for games that were basically buggy and/or terrible budget titles.

Kane Knight 08-19-2011 11:06 AM

Aren't all the majors doing that, though?

I don't mean all their titles, but it seems like the major pubs all break out some really shitty full-priced titles.

Funky Fly 08-20-2011 01:14 PM

True, but their portfolios aren't nearly as cluttered with shit that won't sell because it sucks too much or is way overpriced or both. They need to take a hard look at themselves in the mirror and realize that shit like used game sales isn't the cause of their problems; it's the effect.

Emperor Smeat 08-20-2011 03:45 PM

Been considering picking up Saints Row 2 but just have a quick question. How strict or lenient is the wanted system in the game in terms of free roaming or goofing off and not playing missions?

Is it like GTA where if you accidentally crash into a police car, that automatically gets 1 star or wanted level or hit a few people and it goes up regardless if there were police around?

I know in older GTA games 2 stars and above would have aggressive cops chasing but they reduced the cops going all out on a 2 star level in GTA IV.

Used gaming isn't even a problem, except from the point of view of MINE! They've pretty much maximised profit and demand more. So now they're trying to milk desperately any other source.

It's pretty similar to GTA. Been so long since I played I'm not sure about hitting a cop car, but you do have some leniency before you get one star. The first star goes down pretty quick, too. Funky might know specifics.

Captain of Fun 08-21-2011 02:04 AM

It's much more lenient than GTA. The only things I'd say GTA IV has over SR2, is graphics, and it's cover systems. Then again, some people don't even like cover systems, so that doesn't even count. Personal preference really.

Funky Fly 08-21-2011 03:31 AM

Nah, you got it KK. Plus they have those drive thru forgiveness thingies.

THQ reveals their DLC plans for the game include having roughly 40 weeks of DLC pack releases and make the game's content be interesting enough to keep people interested in playing the game and reduce the overall amount of used copies.

That sort of sounds like BS to me. Honestly, this isn't, "Hey, let's add some extra stuff in as DLC." This is more like "Oh, hey, good idea... Nah, don't put it in the game, wait and sell it to them a week after it comes out." Seriously, 40 weeks worth? I'm curious to see what that DLC includes, and how much could have/should have been included initially.

Emperor Smeat 09-10-2011 06:23 PM

Probably going to be very similar to what Capcom or Bethesda does with DLC content in being mostly new costumes, colors, and weapons/cars.

It is briefly referenced in the article but THQ already did something similar with MX vs ATV although they charged that game at a discount price and then had the DLC cover everything else. It ended up being a huge mistake and might have killed off the series due to all the stuff lacking in comparison to other racing games.

Honestly, we don't know how much content is on the disc already. I'm gonna hold off and wait until the DLC drops before crucifying them. And then probably crucify them, because it'll probably be shit, but....

I'm wondering if there will be a code for new purchases that allows the later stuff. They did say combating the overall volume of used games. I mean, they could be retarded enough to think making us spend 80 more bucks or adding just clothing packs and small items will keep us paying, but MAYBE they have a clue.

The DLC pricing for the last game was kind of weird, with the first one being overly expensive for its content, the second being much beefier for a lower price point, and the last one being a free clothing pack (With a bunch of stuff).

One of the things I've had my fingers crossed for on this game is that they would have finally figured it out.

I like the vow of "continued support through DLC." This sounds a little too much like a marketing ploy rather than real support tho.

Captain of Fun 09-10-2011 10:23 PM

As long as there is a lot of content on the disc, then I don't see the problem with this.

Kane Knight 10-27-2011 01:52 PM

Saints Row Initiation Station demo is available. You can download it to XBox 360 and I think PS3 with instructions on Saintsrow.com . You can create your character, upload it to your SR account, and make ' em public. You can then download any character made public.

There's less customisation in this one, it's obvious from the creator. I'm assuming more clothing options will open up in-game, but you can't do layers anymore, you're you're limited to a single top, bottom, etc.

Within that, there ARE a lot of choices, and most of them look good. And holy shit, I'm making a Steampunk character next time I boot it up.

It's a bit of a shame, but I'm still psyched.

D Mac 11-05-2011 01:07 PM

I love the "zombie" voice for your character.

Kane Knight 11-05-2011 01:17 PM

It's all the rage.

#BROKEN Hasney 11-05-2011 01:36 PM

It's also on Steam, but not in the UK as you can't buy it on Steam in the UK as Game threw their toys out the pram and told THQ they wouldn't stock the PC version if it was on Steam.

It uses Steamworks though, so even on disc it needs Steam...
